From the 1940’s to the present… you’ll LOVE these sweet dolly pictures!

Hi everyone,

REMINDER: The 10 piece outfit, (Autumn’s Arrival) for the Ruby Red Fashion Friends ends tonight. If you haven’t seen it or forgot about it, please check it out on Ebay and see if your girls need a few extra pieces added to their wardrobe. You can click the picture at the right-side bar or you can click HERE.

I have had to switch the ladies pictures from what I told you they would be today… It was going to be Elizabeth’s turn today but she was having trouble with her pictures, so I’m going to show Linda’s pictures today and then show Elizabeth’s when we get things worked out with them. I want you to be able to see the detail on them and you just can’t right now…

This is what Linda said about her pictures: (Her pictures can be clicked on and enlarged.)

The first one is of the 40’s girls on the first day of school. I tried to pick out dresses that were like the ones that I wore to school in the 40’s.

And here are how the girls dress today for the first day of school. Ivy and Scarlett have backpacks, which you can’t see here, and everybody has a lunch too, just like the 40’s girls. I made sure they all have books, papers, crayons and pencils in their backpacks and food in their lunchboxes!

Here are the modern girls doing their after-school activities, karate, cheerleading, tennis and soccer. I found a lady who made local cheerleader teams outfits, and had one made for Mizzou. Sara is quite the cheerleader!

Love to you, Linda💕

Thank you Linda! As always, your pictures are great! Perfect to inspire everyone to change their dolls into something new! :o)

Thanks everyone, see you tomorrow!
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. FIRST!!!
I am up early to go to the dentist. I have to be there at 8. …

Linda, your dolls are beautiful. I love the clothes and the excellent poses! They put in a lot of effort for these gorgeous shots! I adore the clothes, especially the cheer leader outfit. The dresses, I can not pick a favorite

Have a happy day today everyone

Thank you Rosemary! So you have an 8:00 dentist appointment! That’s how I do it, go early and get it out of the way for the rest of the day!

After looking at the pictures I sent, I wonder why I kept the yellow ribbon in Emmy’s hair, not something like white or even red. Oh well. Sometimes you just don’t see what you have done until too late!

While the modern girls look cute, I much prefer dressing up in dresses for back to school! Guess I am “old school”!😊

Thank you Jeanne, for showing my pictures!

    1. I forgot to ask, in the first picture, what number is the doll with the blond puppy tails? I’ve always liked her?

      1. Linda in St. Louis

Paula, that is JLY #21. I always liked her too, and I named her Susan, one of Molly’s friends in her books. She is retired now, but you can find her on the secondary market sometimes.

        1. Thanks Linda! No. 21 is so cute.
I think I’ve saved a lot of your pictures. Your accessories are great and fun to see how you piece the scenes together.
Thank you for answering my questions.
Jeanne’s blog is always so much fun for all us doll collectors and those who like to sew.

Linda, I always love your pictures. I love back-to-school pictures and these are the best. Yes, I remember the days we actually wore dresses to school, and often dressy dresses we were about to outgrow. The modern girls are dressed more like my girls. Anything goes, except short shorts. And it’s always fun to see what extracurricular activities the girls are engaged in. Sara’s cheerleader outfit is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

I forgot to mention I have the outfit on your Wellie. As a matter of fact my Wellies have a lot of outfits from Handmade Y’all. Her clothes are so cute and good prices too. This outfit is one of my favorites.

  3. I love your back-to-school pictures, Linda! I have Molly’s school bag and lunch box, too. Other than color, they look very much like what I had when I was in elementary school. If I remember correctly, my school bag was red plaid, and my lunch box was gray and navy (and my brother’s was gray and green), with matching Thermos! In those days, the Thermoses had corks in them, rather than a screw-on lid, and then there was a “cap” big enough to use as a cup over that. I remember mom folding a napkin to put inside the cap, just in case the cork leaked!

The modern girls look wonderful, too, with their cute outfits and various after-school activities. That cheerleading outfit is wonderful!

  4. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Charlotte! I too, had school accessories like Molly’s! I remember getting pencil boxes and arranging and rearranging all the little things inside before the big “first” day of school! I didn’t have much of a lunchbox, because I usually bought my lunch (ugh, the canned spinach!), but I do remember those canteens with the cork that always seemed to leak! I used a brown bag for lunch whenever I took it. Actually, AG gave Molly a brown bag for her lunch before changing to the red metal lunchbox.

I’m really happy with the cheerleading outfit, because it fits Betsy, Emmy, and Sara so well! Unfortunately, they all can’t be cheering at the same time though!😌

Dear Linda, thanks for allowing us to see photos of your girls. They are all wearing lovely outfits. I especially like the 1940s dresses.

My mother loved Kate Greenaway dresses so I had a few of those.

      1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Dorothy! I do remember Kate Greenaway dresses too! Too bad we don’t see dresses like that anymore!

      2. Barbara in SE Texas

Oh, Dorothy, I loved Kate Greenaway dresses with the hidden pocket. I have several over the years.

  5. I always enjoy your pictures, Linda. Do your girls have a school name? Each era probably goes to the same?

I love the school pictures the most and someday I’ll do some pictures myself. I have several of Molly’s jumper sets that I’ve collected over the years as well as maybe 4 desks and Maryellen’s school map. It’d be great to do a girl’s school.

    Thanks for sharing your pictures!

  6. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Paula! I just go with Molly’s books and have her school be the one in the school, which I believe is Jefferson School.

As far as Molly’s school jumper, I actually have three, but we did that last year, so I wanted to change it up a bit this year. So it’s public school this year, the. Catholic school year others, along with “Sister Mary” In a nun outfit for the teacher!

Since I leave all my doll furniture out, I only have room for one desk, and that stays in Molly’s room when we aren’t doing school pictures. I have most of her furniture, plus a few other pieces in her room. I’ll have to send Jeanne ab picture of her bedroom someday. I also have a kitchen for her with the tin Wolverine appliances that are replica’s of what I had as a child to go with her table and chairs. I had a lot of fun recreating my childhood with Molly!

  7. Linda in St. Louis

Sorry, I made a mistake on the name of her school! It is Willow Street School, and I got it mixed up with her town, which is Jefferson, Illinois.

  8. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

They are all darling, Linda, as your photos are. I do love the “Molly” style dolls from the 40’s because they are from my years of early school. The others are so cute too, though. I really appreciate seeing your lovely work and look forward to you photos.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Sissy! I love going back, as we might say, to the days of our childhood! Such a happy, carefree, time!

  9. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, thanks for sharing Linda’s photos. I always like to see little girls dressed nicely.

I can hardly believe that we are sliding out of September. Christmas will be here in 3 months!

The Hallmark Channel will begin its Christmas marathon of movies starting next month. Watching those makes me happy.

    1. Barbara in SE Texas

As I turned another page over on my desk calendar I realized we were nearly at the end of September and Christmas was just around the corner. But first I have to get through Halloween because the grandkids come out here for our annual Boo Bash and I love seeing their costumes and watching them have great fun. Being of Celtic heritage it’s a big holiday for me too. Then there is Thanksgiving to think about and then maybe I can turn my attention to Christmas. Things do pick up at this time of year.

Well, running late today! How wonderful to see Linda’s crew. A surprise for sure. The 40’s girls rule! I so like the styles and all of the fun accessories. That’s what I remember from the 50’s too, but the dresses I had seemed simpler to me. Brings back fond memories of the lunch boxes. 🙂 The today girls look as excited as we did back in the 40’s and 50’s. So fun to see. Love Sara’s new cheerleading outfit. How great that you were able to have one made for her. Trying to remember the outfits we made for our songleading group in high school in 1966/67. We thought they were pretty cute. Black pea coat and inverted pleat matching skirt for our black outfit and then a similar skirt in orange lighter weight fabric with a white top with trim for the hot weather in fall. I do remember rolling up those skirts for games and back down for school rally days. We had dyed orange tennis shoes and black leather shoes too. Lots of outfits that mix and matched. Fun memories from HS and for another squad in junior college. Different colors though as the Bear Cubs were blue and red. 🙂
Thanks for the memories, Linda, and thank you Jeanne, for sharing the fun photos.

Here the last hot day hopefully. Too hot to paint for me yesterday, but other person got on it after 5:00 and managed to roll on a coat. Not looking forward to painting those railings though. 🙁

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you Joy for the compliments! Yes, I too like to show things in my doll scenes that remind me of how things used to be! Seems like things were better back then, but of course we were children with no cares or worries like we have now. Life seemed simpler too, less stressful, and who doesn’t need more of that?
So fun that you remembered your costumes from 66/67! I was a young g bride then, so not in high school, but I did have a black/navy pea coat in third grade that I remember well. One Friday at the end of the day in third grade, when I went back to the cloak room to get my pea coat, it was not there! It turns out some boy wore it home instead, thinking it was his! Not a good memory at all, as it was the only coat I had and it was winter!

      1. Joy in northern CA

Oh, so sorry about the coat. Sure hope that it was returned minus boy cooties! 🙂 Someone took my plaid lunch box at lunchtime and I was left with someone else’s lunch. So, no lunch for me that day. That night, my father scratched my name on the end of the box so the person that took it could clearly see that it was not their lunch. 🙂

        1. Limda in St. Louis

After my mother called around to various parents, we did find it! Some boy, who was on the chunky side took it, not realizing it didn’t fit! I mean, he was two sizes bigger than I was!

        2. Linda in St. Louis

Yes, Joy, I did get the coat back after my mother called some of the mother’s of the kids in my class. Funny, but the boy who wore my coat home was about 2 sizes bigger than I was!

          1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Linda, I wonder if he had a crush on you and wanted something of yours to keep. It’s kind of romantic in a third grade kind of way (laugh).

Hopefully the teacher gave you something you could wear home. Clearly the young man didn’t think about the fact that you would be cold.

I remember in 6th grade, Terry sat in front of me and Kathy sat behind me. I used to pass their notes back and forth. Ah young love. Luckily the teacher never found out (smile).

        3. Susette from Southern California

Wonderful pictures, Linda! As Jeanne says, “Perfect!” The Mizzou cheerleader 📣 is darling. So special to have your school cheerleader in an authentic costume. Molly was my first American Girl doll because she and I share the same era. Linda has such a wonderful collection of furniture as well as the collection of clothes for several different dolls. Thanks for sharing them with us! 🥰

  11. Barbara in SE Texas

Thanks Jeanne for sharing Linda’s wonderful pictures.

I replied to some comments that came later yesterday on my pictures so anyone I hadn’t responded to can go back and see what I wrote.

  12. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

I love your photos Linda. I really can’t remember much about primary school, especially what I wore. I do remember my mum knitting me a lovey twin set in lemon. I came home for lunch and begged to wear it back to school that afternoon. On the way I sat on a wall (no idea why or what I did). It was a bit warm so I took the cardigan off, then walked away and forgot it. My mum was pretty angry because, of course it was long gone! I was really upset and wanted her to knit me another! She didn’t.
Another great day here. I get fed up with the weather presenters sometimes who live in Auckland usually, (the only place wetter than Auckland is the West Coast which is temperate rain forest). They lament about the rain and the bad weather for the school holidays forgetting that not everyone WANTS to live there so they don’t and we are happy with the weather thank you.
    Have a good day everyone

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Anne! Oh my gosh, you left your beautiful new sweater on that wall? At least you know how to knit now, so maybe make yourself a new sweater! Have you ever made a sweater for yourself?

We have the same thing going on with our weather casters here. Well, not completely the same, but they never seem to get it right most of the time! We do get all four seasons here, and sometimes you never know which one we will get! We are having a lovely rainy fall day here at the moment, and leaves are falling. Hopefully, fall will continue and summer has seen its last days.
