Molly’s new dress set, “Cherries ‘n Checks” is almost finished!

Before I forget again… no, I didn’t clip my collar before I trimmed it close. Sometimes those little clips makes your collar seem a bit jagged every 1/4″ or however far apart your clips are. When you try to press it, it gets little points around the edge. Take your finger and on the inside of the collar, pull your fingernail along the curved seam line to sort of separate the front of the collar from the lining. Since the collar is curved, it tends to have some give from being on the bias…

Second thing to show you is a sweet tea set that Paula sent me pictures of… and her comments about it. Remember, we were talking about tea sets the other day?

This is the picture of the teapot set that was once used on the Queen Mary during its active time as a Trans-Atlantic passenger ship. I think it would be considered an Art Deco design. The set most likely was for one or two people and delivered to their cabin or suite on trays.

I was able to get each piece separately and over a period of two years from a little corner shop on the main floor of the ship but I forget the name of the shop. I’ve kept the receipts but don’t have them with me to recall the name. This was about in 2009.
Years later, our family stayed on the Queen Mary for Thanksgiving. We had two different cabins and it was very exciting that the cabins were used by England’s royalty at one time. Again, all that information is stored away and not with me. It was thrilling to stay in these rooms with the original furniture, (and there was a maid’s room), and it was exciting to me to know we actually slept in the same bed as royalty.

We have been to visit the Queen Mary ship many times and we have wonderful stories of our experiences, but we think the ship may not be kept too much longer. Whether it’s the expense of fixing her up or lack of interest, it’s hard to say. The last time we were there, the tours were not what they once were and the ship really needs repairs.

So, for a piece of history on a once beautiful luxury ship, with royalty and celebrity guests, and then in the war, a rescue ship, I feel blessed to have a few items from her glory days.

Thank you, Paula! What a treasure you have there… and I bet when you look at your tea set, you remember those wonderful times you had on the Queen Mary. Thank you for sharing…

Okay, now from me… I finished Molly’s dress…

got it hemmed…

the snaps sewn on the back and added a belt to tie in the back…

sewed some buttons on the back and tacked down the collar…

then made her a slip to go under it…

and then found a ribbon the right color to tie around her braids…

Isn’t she sweet?

I didn’t change the cluny trim I used to rick rack because I didn’t have the right color. I DO have EVERY OTHER COLOR THOUGH and it’s all vintage too! It would have been perfect, but nothing in my stash… :o)

I am wanting to make Molly a new pair of white socks to go with the shoes she picked out tonight… :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Thank you for the info on the collar, Jeanne. I sometimes trim with a pinking shears, which has kind of the same effect as clipping, but doesn’t go all the way to the seam. It’s always nice to learn other sewers’ tips and tricks!!

Paula, thank you for sharing the pictures of your tea set! I love the little square pot and sugar/creamer. I’m glad they didn’t try to make the cup square, though–it would have been too hard to drink from! How nice that you’ve had the opportunity to not just visit but actually Stay on the ship!!

Jeanne, Molly’s outfit is lovely, and the ribbon in her braid is just the right color! I’m thinking the lace color is showing up better in today’s pictures. Molly looks quite pleased with it all!

Today we were able to worship in our sanctuary again–the new furnace was installed on Thursday! It was wonderful to hear the organ again, too, in addition to the piano. (Downstairs we just have the piano.) I also appreciated not having to prepare prelude music, as Laurie, our organist, takes care of that when she’s there.

    1. HI Charlotte,
You are so welcome on the collar info… I hope it works for you… there is another way to do collars… I might have to share it too! I have done it with pinking shears too…
I’m glad you enjoyed Paula’s tea set. Wasn’t it adorable? What a treasure she has!
That cluny lace goes very well with the cherries… my phone is just not picking up the colors right.
Congratulations on being able to get back to a bit of normalcy by being in your church sanctuary again… I know you missed being there!
Molly’s dress is going on Ebay in just a bit…
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Paula, what a treasure you have with your tea set! The story around it makes it twice as valuable as the actual set! I never saw a square tea set, but I guess that was the norm on a ship. You will always have those wonderful memories when you look at that set! Thank you for sending that to Jeanne!

Jeanne, I don’t know what is going on, but some days I get your blog in my email and some days I don’t. Today is a “don’t” day!

Molly looks adorable and ready to give her report in school, by wearing this charming cherry and checks dress! It is like a “dressy” school dress, something “special” for a special day! Oh yes, some nice white socks and maybe Mary Janes to finish the look? She gets A+ from me!

Almost forgot to thank you for the tip to clip or not around the curves of the collar…makes sense!

I guess your snow is all gone now, and it looks like spring is coming this week!! Yay!!

    1. HI LInda,
I’m sorry about the blog not making it on some days… I have no idea what makes it do that! UGH!
Now that I see your words together, I’m tempted to change my title to Charming Cherries… instead of Cherries N Checks! It’s going on Ebay in about 10 minutes…
I got her new socks made and she looks so sweet just standing on my cutting table… I do love her! …Oh and yes, Mary Janes! Thanks for the A+ on this one!

Yes, our snow is all gone, and I’m looking forward to Spring… the Bradford Pears are already covered with buds… it won’t be long!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Looks like Molly is all checked in with her cherries. It is a very sweet outfit. 🙂
Thanks to Paula and Jeanne for sharing the lovely Queen Mary china. Wonderful that Paula has a setting and shared her stay onboard as well. I immediately had to take a look on Ebay to see what else might be available. Lots of pieces. Some at very expensive prices but fun to see what else was used on the ship. Love china.
I actually tried Jeanne’s collar method without clipping on my most recent collar. Seems to work. I’ll see if I can get a pic when I’m finished, but have a way to go to the finish line. 🙂
Onward to groggy Monday with the time change.

    1. Thanks Joy,
I got it listed and will go on Ebay in a few minutes… YAY! Of course we didn’t eat dinner until 8:15… my poor hubby! But he was busy, so it was really okay!

Congrats on giving the collar a try. I hope you do like it in the end… As I told Charlotte, I have another way of doing collars that I might have to share…

I was a bit groggy this morning too… I guess we’ll get used to it eventually! :o)
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

I looked up the Queen Mary and found that it’s closed for repairs
    https://abcnews.go.com/Travel/wireStory/queen-mary-ship-closed-tourists-critical-repairs-82535711
a relief, since Paula said they were needed. When visitors can’t miss that repairs are needed, you know it’s not just that a couple things need replacing and the brass needs polishing. . It looks like a big project. I’m glad it’s being done.

Molly’s dress is so cute and looks so right. I’m not a rick-rack fan and am more than happy with the pretty lace trim, which puts the dress in the “for special days” category, as Linda says.

Also as Linda says, the blog did not come through on my email today, and I don’t think that’s happened before.

    1. HI Marilyn,
Whoa… $5 million in repairs… I guess that IS considered “critical repairs!” Thanks for researching and the info on the ship…

Thanks for your compliments on Molly’s dress. I like it very much too… and you KNOW Molly loves it! She’s so excited to be modeling again…it’s been a while!
It’s just been listed on Ebay…

I’m sorry that your blog post didn’t come through today either… I wish I knew why that happens every once in a while…

…and from the other day… I hope one day you are able to sew again TOO!!!!!

      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I really like Molly’s sweet outfit. She looks adorable in it. Glad you added the slip and are thinking of socks. It’s the perfect 40’s-50’s dress. I prefer Molly to be in the 50’s in my mind.

Jeanne, thank you for sharing my pictures of the Queen Mary teapot set. Even though I’m happy to have gotten the pieces I did get, and the Art Deco design is styled throughout the whole ship, I would have created a different design. But Art Deco ruled back then.
My niece gave me three little porcelain shell dishes, also from the Queen Mary, White Star Cunard Co. I use the smaller ones on my vanities and the large one for mints on a hallway console.
Joy is right, there is a lot of Queen Mary items on EBay. For one: a beautiful chair I’d love to have. Equivalent to maybe 20 RRFF dolls!

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Paula, thanks so much for sharing your treasures with us here on the sofa. I love all things tea!

    2. HI Paula,
Thanks for your kind compliments on Molly’s dress set. I did make her some new white socks, added some black Mary Janes and now she’s ready to show the whole world her new dress… it’s listed on Ebay now…

It was my pleasure to show your tea set to everyone. You have such a neat story to go with it… they aren’t just some random pieces you picked up… you were there!

      Well, let’s see… a new chair or 20 dolls… hmmm… I know what I’d pick… but I might be partial to dolls! :o)
      Thanks Paula!
      Blessings, Jeanne

Truly an adorable outfit and perfect for Molly. I like the Cluny. I have several pieces of that but am waiting to use it on that special something I’ve yet to make. You should do a tutorial on bow tying someday. Your bows always look so lovely. Also, could you give us the dimensions on the “yoke slips”. I’ve kind of figured out what they are but would love to see what you use. I did your slip tutorial awhile back but that was not for a slip with a yoke.

I made a pretty dress for Evianna the other day using a Meadow Dumpling pattern, but when I put it on her I wasn’t over the moon with the look so I tried the dress on my MA Lissy and she carries it off wonderfully. She needed a new Easter dress. She’s been wearing the same one for about the past four years. So back to the drawing board. I tried some of the clothes I made for my Ann Estelle Sophie on Evianna and voila they fit to perfection. Sophie is an inch shorter, but the dress patterns are always long and I have to shorten them for Sophie so they are a perfect length for Evianna. I searched for the perfect fabric and finally found a pretty peach with flowers and tiny white dots in the background. Can’t wait to get started on it, but today is an “office” day so maybe tomorrow.

Paula’s tea set is lovely with such a wonderful history behind it. What fun it must have been to stay aboard such a special ship even if it was docked. We have the Battleship Texas here. I was thinking the other day that we really need to take the grandkids to visit her once she is reopened to the public. That is supposed to occur in the last quarter of 2022. They have formed a foundation to keep her going and will be moving her from the current location to a new dry dock in Galveston. We also have the tall ship “Elissa”, a three- masted barque based in Galveston. She is one of the oldest ships sailing today. She was launched in 1877, and is now a museum ship at the Texas Seaport Museum. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. We toured her several years ago and it was amazing. She still sails occasionally. She is not very large but when she’s in full sail she is marvelous to see.

I’m with Joy on the post time change groggy Monday. To make it worse I came home from church and lunch yesterday and took a three-hour nap. I told myself not to do that but I wasn’t listening. So, I could not sleep worth a darn last night. I feel like I’m going on nervous energy and I have so much to do today. Ugh!

    1. HI Barbara,
I could maybe give you some directions on the slips… I don’t really have a set pattern… I just cut and sew… but I can try…

It’s nice when you have other dolls that can benefit from the problems we have when something doesn’t look quite right on a certain doll. Been there, done that! :o)

I hope you are able to take your grandkids on the Battleship Texas ship one of these days… They will love it and never forget it! Ships are SO SO big… you don’t realize it until you are on one!

Maybe we’ll all be caught up to the time change soon… I’ve been a little foggy too…
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. What a wonderful treasure your tea set is, Paula. The fact that it has a story behind it makes it doubly special. How exciting to have stayed on the ship. You must have felt like Princess Paula.

Molly’s dress is very sweet, Jeanne. I love that cherries on checks fabric and the cluny lace really dresses it up. How wonderful that you had ribbons for her hair in the correct color. The only thing i would point out is that is looks like the ribbons could use some Fray-Check or heat sealing on the ends.
I received the blog as usual, both in my inbox and promotions as I always do.

    1. I’m late – thank you for the Princess Paula. You know me, anything historical is so exciting to me. To think of the people who stood there or lived there or spoke there is fascinating to me.

    2. HI Laura,
I liked that… Princess Paula… and I bet she did too!
Thanks for your compliments on Molly’s dress. I did seal the ends of the ribbons with fray check and pressed them too…before I posted the picture of the items laid out… good eye!
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, Molly’s dress is so cute. She looks she is off to a social event. Maybe it’s a tea, hosted by Paula with her beautiful tea set.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
Well, I was trying to get it listed so I didn’t set up a tea party, but I think it will be okay… I even had my hubby racking his brain for a story line…He said just make it a special dress for a special occasion… so I did…

I need to get my sewing room cleaned up again… It’s a mess where I was working on those doll wigs and then the water came in so I had to take my thread holder off the wall and move a few other things… I need to get it put back on the wall, but my hubby said the roof guy said he might come by and do a test where they spray water up there and watch to see what happens… hmmm…
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne
