Stepping back to Colonial times, it’s Felicity’s turn for a new dress…

DON’T FORGET: The dress set for the Little Darlings, “Promise of Blue Skies” ends this evening on Ebay… I hope you’ll take a peek and see if one of your girls wants/needs this! *wink* *wink*
You can see the listing by clicking on Emmie’s picture at the right side bar or you can click HERE.

I bought this fabric on a day trip we took a few weeks ago. I am SO sad that my favorite fabric shop is going out of business. The owner has been there for 40 years and is looking to retire. The business is for sale but she can’t find any buyers…I will miss going there when we go to Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It’s one of the first places we come to when we get to Cape and my hubby usually asks, “I guess you’ll want to stop at The Golden Needle?” And ten times out of ten, I say, “Yes, please!”

This fabric has Felicity’s name written all over it… it’s like a faded minty green…very pretty with sort of faded red flowers. Because the fabric looked old fashioned, I decided to use two different vintage laces…

If you click on the pictures, they will enlarge.

The lace that goes down the front does have some age spots but the print behind it makes the variations less noticeable. I stitched the lace by the neckline on by hand and like how it looks…

A few weeks ago Rebecca was cleaning out her jewelry stash and gave me two of these sweet little cameos. They go perfectly with the print and I couldn’t have found anything better if I had tried.

I don’t have very much done on the dress, but it’s a start and I’ll try to move quickly on it…it’s imagination time for you all! :o)

Well, that was short and sweet… and hopefully I’ll have more done on it the next time we meet… which will probably be tomorrow!

See you then,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. This will turn out so lovely love the lace and colors in the fabric. It’s probably just me but I’m not with cameo with the design just looks disconnected from everything else. Maybe something less in one color or metal brooch might look better

The fabric and colors in it are just perfect for Felicity! I like the laces you chose, also, particularly that narrow one around the neck. It is SOOOO pretty!!

But…I have to say, I’m with Lynn, the cameo just isn’t ringing any bells for me, either. My first thought would be to weave some narrow ribbon thru the neckline lace and add a bow at center front, but that might take away from the perfect placement of the flowers there. So….maybe, as Lynn suggested, a smaller and/or plainer brooch? The colors in the cameo are a good match, but….no. You might save the cameo and use it on an accessory piece to go with the outfit, maybe? Something like a wrap of some kind, or perhaps a little purse/reticule? Or maybe save it for a different fabric/outfit entirely.

It will be interesting to see what others think! And, of course, what you end up doing!

  3. Your Felicity is so pretty. When I would read about people not bonding with a doll, I would wonder what on earth they were talking about. Well, I found out with my Felicity. I made her 2 beautiful outfits using the Pleasant Company pattern. I sold the first because I thought the dress was the problem. So I made a second. When that didn’t help, I tried modern clothes. Nope. She had to move on to someone who could appreciate her. I feel like every Felicity I see is so much prettier than mine. I’m still tempted to find another and see if it works out better.

    1. Hi Julia,
Felicity is one of those rare dolls that the “version” of her you choose tends to make a tremendous difference in how you view and love the doll IMO. Samantha is another one, at least for me. I don’t care for the white body German version, but love my first tan body 1991 German version. There are many versions of Felicity- PC West German 1991, PC German 1993, then the PC China made version of the mid 1990’s which is the transitional, then the Mattel version after 1998 when Pleasant sold her company, and finally the BeForever version when Felicity returned in 2017.
My favorite, and the one I own and shared is the first, the PC West German from 1991. That doll has coppery red hair, periodot GLASS eyes, and peaches and cream complexion. She also has a few other traits that distinguish her even fro the German version. My daughter’s has that one from 1993.
Want to see one? That’s the version Jeanne has which I happened to be involved in the finding. I helped another “sofa sister” find one recently as well. I know how to spot that version. LOL I can tell you what to type into ebay and what questions to ask if that’s the version you like as well.

Hi Jeanne Love the fabric and the lace goes perfectly with the fabric. I agree with Julia your Felicity is very pretty. Can’t wait to see how this turns out

  5. The fabric looks lovely so far. Although the cameo is perfect color I don’t care for it as a brooch. How about on a neck ribbon?

  6. Colonial time! I had to look up a few dresses to see what might emerge. The lace is quite lovely and the fabric as well. The rust color brings out Felicity’s beautiful hair. For some reason, I am drawn to her gathered neck seam and not the fabric and lace, so if the cameo is going on a choker, it would cover the distraction and change the perspective entirely. And of course, should she have a bonnet with a ribbon, that too would camouflage. Can’t wait to see the sleeves. The dresses I happened upon all had long sleeves and maybe this will have them too. And the skirt? Will it also have matching lace or? Looking forward to the next episode. 🙂

  7. When we lived in Missouri there was a nice book store that the lady was trying to sell, but was having trouble finding someone interested, too.

I think the red flower behind the brooch hides the brooch somewhat. The material matches her hair and eyes well. Happy feast of St. Joseph! (That’s my husband’s name) 🙂

  8. It always makes me sad when one of my favorite places to shop goes out of business. What’s worse is when it’s been there for years and just when I start shopping there it goes out of business. I never shopped at Stein Mart and then I found some skirts online that were really nice and fit well so I started looking at some of their other things. They are in the same shopping center as Hobby Lobby but I never shopped there. Next thing I know they are having a going out of business sale. I found a place where clothes actually fit me and then they go out of business after being in business for 100 years. I went in and bought several things before they closed for good.

Looks like the dress is coming along very nicely. I love vintage lace and those pieces are lovely. I’m not for the cameo either. It seems to get lost in the flower and it is such a lovely cameo it should have pride of place. I always have a problem with the neck seam on AG dolls which is one reason my 18″ dolls are MA. My rescue dolls both have cloth bodies and I’m always trying to make them things that hide this. I’m usually not terribly successful at that, especially if I really want to use a certain pattern for them. I can’t wait to see the final sleeve treatment.

Hope you are successful in your attempt to replace your roof. Our roof was brand new when we bought our house and I truthfully didn’t expect to be in this house until its warranty expired. It was 30 years. But I am and so the time has come to seriously replace it. On top of that we put a “sun pipe” in my sewing room years ago to get more light in there and it is deteriorating so it needs to come out. The joys of home ownership.

Barbara, according to Wikipedia, Stein Mart still has an online presence; it’s just the stores have been closed. We never had one, so I don’t know much about it, other than what I’ve read.

  9. I just got a message from AG that it’s Josefina’s birthday today. Happy birthday to Josefina.

  10. The material is lovely, It must feel as though you are making a “people” dress after all those teeny tiny dresses!
I agree that the cameo is the right colours but think it would be better on a white blouse, I don’t think it works with the flowers, sorry.

  11. I was hoping and I was right!! It’s FINALLY the fair Felicity’s turn. She never, ever made it off of the dolly shelf last year.
The fabric is a lovely choice and the vintage lace looks very pretty with it. I guess i’ll have to add my comments about the cameo as well. Your Felicity has quite a bit of puckering on her neck fabric. I’ve done a small amount of adjusting on a couple of my dolls to eliminate that by moving the puckers to the back for a smoother front.
My eye does drift from flower to cameo to puckers. It might work as a choker necklace on a ribbon better or perhaps just a narrow ribbon with a drop coral bead. I know cameos were worn as the wear earlier in the Georgian period, but I associate them more with the Victorian era
I do think the fabric sets off her coppery hair beautifully. So glad to see Felicity in the spotlight.

  12. Marilyn, I just read your post from yesterday and I had the same problem with trying to post the other day. It is the only time it has happened and I was a bit frustrated but after trying two or three times I gave up
