A Purse, a Pup and a Pair of tights…

Now that’s a random title for you, isn’t it? I hope it made you curious enough to open up and see what I’m talking about today. “My” day didn’t get started until around 6:30 this evening, so there was no way to get Lian’s dress listed on Ebay. I’ll try again tomorrow.

I did, however, get her “accessory” made. We tried a royal blue bear…too dark blue. We tried an old fashioned Mohair bear…too “worn” looking. We tried a Memory Card game, too plain for her fancy dress. We tried a book on Counting… it was too little of a book… it’s better for Navi or Ten Ping’s size. Then I asked her if she’d like a purse? You should have seen her eyes light up. So then it was trying to decide what color… I didn’t have any navy wool felt, but that would probably have been to dark anyway. I had several shades of pink and we finally decided on this one. The color is just like it is in the full length picture of her. I edge stitched it in white and then decorated it with some blue, pink and white buttons and some felt flowers. I used a pink and white checked ribbon for the strap. There’s a nickel sewn inside it to make it hang better…

My close up pictures of it look kind of rosy, but it’s PINK!

Okay, that was the Purse… now onto the Pup.

Joy sent me the cutest picture of 16″ Stella May in an outfit she made that is SO SO adorable. A HUGE Doll Convention is going on in Texas and Stella asked it they could go… Joy said she was quite disappointed… Look at her sweet romper… and her puppy is the perfect “accessory” for this set! I’m sure you’ll agree!

Now on to the PAIR of tights… Actually it’s a lot more than one pair…

A few of you asked about Lian’s thigh highs… and wondered what I made them out of. I buy little girls tights whenever I find them on sale… pink, white, black, lace, ribbed, etc. They work very well and I have quite a stash of them. If you find some you like, buy the largest size to get the most thigh highs for your money. Some have one leg cut off and others are just pieces where I’ve used most of the tights. I’ve always got my eyes open looking for stretchy fabrics that will work for socks and thigh highs. Some knee socks work well and some stretchy trouser socks work well too.

I hope you can see some of the different textures of mine.

My hubby is working in my sewing room adding another outlet for me… YAY! When I moved that glass front cabinet it covered up the outlet I used the most.

Not only can he pick “accent” colors for bows… he’s an excellent electrician! I think I’ll keep him! :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. That pink purse is just darling, and absolutely the best accessory for Lian’s outfit! I can see that she’s just thrilled with it! After all, little girls need purses, too!!

Joy, your Stella May is adorable, and her romper is just perfect for her! I’m sorry that Stella May had to be disappointed about that doll convention; maybe she can go next year?!

Thanks, Jeanne, for all the info about tights. I will need to go take a look in the kids’ dept. and see what’s available now. I do think I have patterns for tights for several sized dolls on hand now, it’s jut a matter of getting the tights, and making them now!

    1. HI Charlotte,
I’m late tonight… but I’m gonna try to get everyone answered. I’m glad Lian picked the purse… I was hoping she would.
I can spot a pair of little girls tights a mile away… :o) Hope you find some and make them for your girls! They’ll love you for it!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. The little purse is the perfect accessory for Lian! I just hope she isn’t like my daughter, who was always taking a purse with her everywhere, and then leaving it wherever we went! Oh the times looking for a little purse everywhere, before it was time to go! I also remember my mother making me put the strap of my purses over my head, like a cross-body bag they have now, but back then, only little girls did that,— but no, not me! I wanted to look like an adult! To this day, I don’t wear those cross-body purses, since they make me feel like a silly little girl who might lose her purse!!

Joy’s Stella Mae is so cute, and how sad she didn’t get to go after getting ready and even taking her doggie along! Like Charlotte said, maybe next year!

I believe you made a pair of tiny underpants for Betsy for me, Jeanne, and I see it was from the same material that Lian’s tights were made from! I just made the discovery when changing her outfit yesterday! So, more than tights come from that material!!!

    1. Hi Linda,
I think Lian’s purse will stay on her arm… she told me she’d be careful. I told her about your daughter losing hers all the time! :o)

Yes, Betsy’s undies were made from the tights.. dual purpose, those tights are!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, Lian looks adorable in her outfit. I love how you made the purse. It is the perfect color for the dress.

I am so sorry that Joy’s girl Stella May cannot go to the Modern Doll Convention next week in Texas. She looks so sweet in her outfit. Maybe she can save her allowance so she can go next year.

I look forward to seeing more photos of your sewing room. It is all falling into place.

    1. HI Dorothy,
I’m glad you and Lian BOTH like her purse. It’s always fun to come up with a purse. I probably spent more “figuring” out how to embellish it and picking the color than I did making it… well, maybe not, but it seemed like it. :o)

“I” need to save “MY” allowance so “I” can go sometime… I’d love to check out a doll convention… ANY doll convention… I’m not picky!

My hubby worked on other jobs today in town, so he didn’t get the outlet finished… but it’s getting close. :o) I’m a little anxious too. Right now I can only use my iron OR my light above it, but not both… :o(
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Lian’s purse is so sweet. I wonder if she might lose it like Linda’s daughter used to. Mainly because she wants to keep it and will hide it away someplace. 🙂
What a great undies fabric stash. I think I like the thigh highs best because they are so much easier to put on than full tights. Stella May and Sophie Mae have no tights or thigh highs at this point. Poor little things.
I would love to be going to the San Antonio Modern Doll Convention, but it’s not going to happen. Maybe we’ll be able to go to one in the future.
Good for George and your new plug. Other person here also played electrician at the cabin yesterday and was able to install two new lights replacing the 1950’s models from my childhood bedroom. Cabin always received the hand me downs. 🙂 Of course, that feat also involved a six plus hour round trip drive too. Exhausting.
Hope you get Lian’s dress listed today. It’s very cute.

    1. Guess I spoke too soon about getting the cabin lights installed. Because today, we have a toilet leak here at home. So now we’re playing plumber. Have tried several things, but ended up going to Home Depot and found a flow valve seal we think will work. If that doesn’t work, we’re heading back to pick up a new toilet. Ours is we think 27 years old and works perfectly. Except that now it’s leaking. Keep your fingers crossed. 🙂

    2. HI Joy,
I TOLD Lian about Linda’s daughter and she said she’d be extra careful and not lose her purse!
A few ladies have told me they prefer tights because they are easier than keeping the 2 pieces of the thigh highs together. I always thought about adding a connecting piece of ribbon or trim from one leg to the other so that wouldn’t happen. But I’ve never done it yet…
I still can’t get over how cute Stella May is in that outfit, that pose, those boots and her expression! She is ONE cutie!
I DID get Lian’s dress listed…that’s why I’m so behind on getting my comments answered!

Oh, I wish my hubby lived closer to you… he’d love to come over and trouble shoot with your hubby! Even about toilets! :o)
      Thanks Joy!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Joy’s little Stella is the sweetest thing. Those boots are a hoot. Stella has so much personality!
Your accessories are making that blue dress stand out!
Go George! There can never be too many outlets! Your sewing room gets better and better!

    1. HI Kathie,
My hubby was busy working on some job in town today, so my outlet is still just a hole in the wall with a blue box showing… soon… I think it’ll be soon and it will be finished…
Don’t you just love that picture of Stella May… I absolutely love her looks in that picture!
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Really adorable little purse. I think I forgot to mention I love the fabric. The whole ensemble is really pretty and will sell fast I think.

I have one more back-to-school outfit to complete before I can take pictures. I will have that done this week. No sewing next week because I will be getting ready to leave for cooler climes.

Joy’s Stella May looks so cute in her new outfit. Joy makes such really cute things for her little ones.

Believe me Stella May, no one is more disappointed than I am to not be able to go to that convention. It’s 150 miles from me and a mere 2 hrs. plus a little. So near yet so far away. We’re leaving 9/20 for Colorado. Since we have to be in western Colorado the night of 9/21, and we have commitments up until we leave, there was no way I could back up our leave time and do both by going through San Antonio and then on to Colorado. Yes, Stella May, I feel your pain but maybe we will both have our chance in the future.

I have a serious plug deficiency in my sewing room. When hubby remodels, he puts in tons of outlets. Problem is he didn’t remodel my sewing room only added several large cabinets, one of which nearly covers up one of the few plugs I have. Solution, a power strip that plugs into the one side of the outlet. Dilemma: what to do with the power strip since it serves both my worktable on one side of my room and my two sewing machines in the middle of he floor. There is no good place for it, so I taped it down so I wouldn’t trip over it. Our house was built in 1945, so you can guess how deficient in outlets it is. We’ve remodeled the bathroom and kitchen, so they are good to go, but we definitely could use more elsewhere.

A question for all here. I’m missing out on doll conventions because I need a better option than the site I’m using. I missed a convention in March that was held at Hobby Airport on the east side of Houston. I wonder how many others I’m missing. Are there any good comprehensive sites out there? The one I’m using has tons of things but neither the San Antonio nor the Hobby area conventions are mentioned. As a matter of fact there isn’t much in Texas at all so I just thought we were devoid of dolly stuff. That seems to not be the case.

    1. Hi Barbara,
I did a quick Google search for you by typing in 2019 USA doll convention list. I noticed if you type in 2019 doll convention list it will show you events in your state just a little down the page. I’m in Ohio and it brought up events in Cincinnati (my birthplace) as well as a number of others. My grandmother was born in Texas and her four sisters and brother lived there always. She was the rebel who left for Ohio to marry my grandfather. She was born in Welcome (have you heard of that?) and grew up on a cotton farm in Beasley that had Snake Creek on the one end. We ended up selling the farm , although I still hold the mineral rights (in case oil is ever struck as Jett Rink did in GIANT. My one great aunt lived in Pasadena, the other in Kerrville, and my great uncle in Rosenburg and we went to Galveston when we visited. I have always considered myself an honorary Texan. I have no idea whether or not the two you mentioned were listed on these following links as the sites just have upcoming events. They seem pretty comprehensive though.

      Have a lovely day,
      Laura

      1. Laura, I lived in Pasadena when I first moved to Texas in 1969. Right now I live just up the road from Rosenberg. I’ve heard of Welcome but not sure where exactly it is. If you ever get back to Texas, feel free to stop by. Thanks for the links.

    2. HI Barbara,
I’m glad you like Lian’s dress…that builds my confidence that I did the right thing with it!

Oh, I bet you were just sick when you found out the Doll Convention was so close, but SO FAR AWAY from happening for you! I would have been sick! I wish some of them would come closer to me… but doubt if that will ever happen.

You are SO right about not having enough plugs in a sewing room. I bet I could use 10 more easily! But I’ll have to do with what I have… and I have a power strip too with most of my machines plugged into it!

I was going to say, I didn’t have a clue how you find out about the Doll Conventions, but I see Laura has answered you… I’m going to see what she has to say!
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. What a cute purse Lian has, Jeanne. That whole outfit is just darling. The bottom ruffle is the best touch, so feminine. I love those tiny micro buttons, have to look for some sometime. Thigh highs are a really nice options. I picked up a couple of pairs years ago when I first began my own collection. I though they would look better with Samantha’s birthday dress than the knee highs.
Joy’s Stella May is just too cute in her doggie shortalls and cowboy boots with her faithful friend at her side. Your girls, like Linda’s, always seem to be up to something fun.

    1. HI Laura,
Thanks for letting us know how to search for Doll Conventions.. I never thought of googling them. Duh! I’ll have to do that here in Illinois… maybe even Kentucky and Missouri as we are close to both of those states if we travel about an hour or so…
I thought everyone would love seeing Stella May… she just cracks me up in that picture. I just love looking at it.
I’m glad you like Lian’s dress… I got it on Ebay… finally…that’s why I’m late getting to my comments!
      Thanks so much Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I like those little short-alls Joy made for her Stella. Very cute! Jeanne, I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me you were using girls tights to make your thigh-high stockings. I have used ladies trouser socks to make tights for my AG dolls, and it works very well. Also, I think it’s more economical than buying fabric. Good job on the dress and purse. It’s very pretty.

    1. Thanks for your sweet compliments on Lian’s dress…and so glad you too, enjoyed seeing Stella May… Isn’t she just the cutest thing… simple and sweet!
      Thank you Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne
