Ruby Red Fashion Friends doll, Violette, wants a purse and headband like in the 1920’s

My plan today was to make that purse and headband, mimicking some of the ideas I had looked at last night, but… my plan was short lived. We had lunch with someone, then went to look at a house with them, and not one minute after we left to do what was on our to do lists, Kristoffer called and sounded terrible. He said he didn’t know what was wrong, but something was… he was wondering if it was appendicitis, his gall bladder, or maybe kidney stones, which he had had before. He said he’d wait a little while and call us in about 45 minutes to let us know if the pain had eased up.

We decided to “start” our day and I was going to be dropped off at Hobby Lobby to look at a few things to finish a purse and headband, while my hubby went to Lowe’s to exchange something. We got to the front doors of Hobby Lobby and I was unbuckling my seat belt, ready to hop out when Kristoffer called again and asked if we could we please come and get him and take him to the ER… he was hurting too much. So we made a loop in the parking lot, drove to the next town where he lives and picked him up and took him to the ER. They did a CT and it turns out he did have kidney stones… they were tracking where the stones were, by where he was feeling the pain… We stayed with him, all afternoon and evening and after taking him back to his house, we got home at 8:45. I wasn’t able to get any “supplies”, so no purse or headband were started. I’ll try again tomorrow I guess.

So I thought I would at least show you some wonderful pictures I saw and then something I remembered I had from the 20’s.

Purses from the 1920’s

Aren’t there some real gems in that group of purses? They are ALL so pretty and Violette was eyeing them too. :o)

I was THRILLED when EVERYONE was on the same page about that pink and tan crocheted, or tatted trim!! I do mean thrilled because IT was My favorite too! Oh and I must explain the ribbons on the head…

I guess sometimes when I’m thinking of something, I’m guessing you can read my mind when I show something… My thoughts about those ribbons… “I’ll just drape these 2 different ribbons on her head, which I’ll use on the side of the headband to dangle something from, or tie in a bow, or make a flower from… I’m sure everyone will know I have it draped on her head so they see what the color of the ribbon looks like next to the dress or how it looks.” (Guess you didn’t get that part!) Sorry… But it did seem everyone liked the satin ribbon too, which was, again, my favorite!

Here are some BEAUTIFUL pictures of 1920’s headbands… they are as beautiful as the purses!

Headbands of the 1920’s

So IF I can make it to Hobby Lobby tomorrow, I hope to get that purse and headband finished… but no promises.

NOW… for something I forgot I had from the 1920’s. It’s a sweet little metal/mesh purse, given to me by my hubby’s dad. It feels so neat when you touch it. It feels cool to the touch but it’s the way it is put together, woven metal or wired together metal dots. Maybe you’ve seen one or touched on. It actually almost feels like silk, it’s slick and smooth and almost like a slinky in your hand.

It’s probably about 3″ long…

It’s got a few “sections” in the purse… I think this part was the lipstick area… that piece of mesh is some that came off the bottom. The bottom of the purse has a hole in it… and I think this came loose, but at least it’s all still there…

When I lifted up this section, I could still smell women’s powder… it was a wonderful smell…

It’s just a little wrist purse and for some reason I think my father-in-law said it was a Cotillion purse. I might be wrong…

Here is another look at it…

This note came with it…

Well, that’s all from me today… maybe tomorrow I just might get those supplies and see what I come up with.

Thanks for reading!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I’m so sorry about Kristoffer’s medical emergency; Ron had kidney stones some years back–twice! A week apart!!–and they were no fun at all. Very very painful, he said. Praying that Kristoffer is soon on the mend. (Remind him to drink plenty of water–sometimes this happens when a person gets dehydrated.)

You have quite a variety of purses to choose from, Jeanne! Has Violette decided on a favorite yet?

And headbands!! Who knew there was such a variety of styles?!! Everything from pretty basic to very elaborate. I’m sure you’ll come up with something lovely for her.

I have seen a couple of those little mesh bags before, and you described how they feel perfectly. What you have is quite a treasure, too, and unusual in color/style, I think. I have two vintage bags but not quite that vintage! One is a hand-painted navy satin purse that my dad gave my mom in the early 1940s, when they were going together; another is one I found in the thrift store, and the label inside says “Paris”!! As I recall it’s black silk. I’ll have to get it out and look at it again–it’s been a long time.

I always thought “Thoroughly Modern Millie” was funny where one of the girls was looking for a husband and the other’s mother was trying to make sure she didn’t marry someone who only wanted her for her money. It made for a lot of hilarious happenings. And adding in the white slavery thing was freaky with the sound of that creaking cart. I’d actually forgotten that part of the movie. And Carol Channing was absolutely wonderful.

Yes! And one of the “Chinamen” (as they were referred to back then) was Jack Soo, who was later on Barney Miller, and also in the movie, Flower Drum Song. I always liked him.

I so agree!! We saw Carol Channing live one time, when she was in Jerry’s Girls, a musical review featuring the songs of Jerry Herman, and starring Carol, Leslie Uggams, and Andrea McCardle. We mainly went to see Andrea McCardle; Ron wasn’t too keen on Carol Channing….until he saw her perform live!! Such fun!!

Oh Jeanne, I’m so sorry to hear about Kristoffer’s bout with kidney stones, but all must be well now, if he is back home. It certainly is nice to know that he had the two of you available to help! No matter how old our “kids” are, they are always our kids, ,and there is nothing we wouldn’t do to help them!

Well, I’m so glad you picked the third headband for this outfit! Really, it was no competition! Can’t wait to see what is next and how you finish it off!

Ok, now I understand what you were doing with the clump of ribbons on Violette’s head! That gave me a sigh of relief!😊

As for that wonderful purse, I have something similar! My aunt gave me one of her pretty purses she had sometime in the late 30’s-early 40’s, when I was about 9 years old. It was a mesh beggars purse, which is what they called it, and was made by the same company as yours, Whiting and Davis! So glad you included that note about it at the end, because I couldn’t remember who had made it. I had that purse in my drawer for about 70 years(!) and finally decided it should go to my granddaughter when she turned 18 last year. I’ll send a picture of the one I had separately, although this is not my actual purse. There are many on EBay and this was one.

I think this purse will be fun to make, since there are so many pretty ones on the link you showed us. That seemed like a wonderful time to be a young lady and to dress up, and here we are now, wearing ripped jeans! (not me though!)

Yay, number 3 wins. 🙂 Glad that the headband is figured out, except for that side feather. I’m still for a small peacock feather, or something in that teal color. I’m not so sure about making a flower from that pink ribbon though or even having things dangling from the headband. Might be overkill with the nice headband.
Sorry about Kristoffer’s stones. I’ve heard that they can be very painful. I also heard that they can analyze the stones to see what is causing them. Usually from diet. Sure hope he is feeling better today. Not fun.
Thanks for sharing that great purse. Maybe another shadowbox item? It would be lovely in a bedroom. I was going to look for that necklace that is around here somewhere, but ended up back in the yard pulling out ivy yesterday. More to go, but getting there. Moved the fallen over trellis as well. Looking much better. 🙂

So sorry to hear about Kristoffer. We have a friend who has a serious problem with kidney stones. They definitely affect his life. Hopefully Kristoffer is feeling better now and maybe can find out what’s causing them.

Wow what an array of purses. You should have a lot of fun deciding what to make after viewing all those. And the headbands are marvelous. So many really lovely ones.

Dear Jeanne, I hope your son is better now. He was smart to call for help.

The little purse and its provenance are interesting.

I have heard that passing a kidney stone is about as much fun as having a baby. My dad was able to photograph one with an electron microscope. They are crystalline — made up of tiny pyramids . That’s why they hurt so much. Very sensible of Kristoffer to call for help. And he called the people that fix things — another sensible choice. I hope this misery gets over quickly.

And on to Violette — I do like the self-headband, but the pink and tan was a close runner up. You could do both — maybe. The pink and tan might work better than the fabric one on some hair styles and is a better contrast. It also goes nicely with the shoes — but you aren’t including the shoes — unless you can replace them easily. I’ll bet adding shoes would add a nice chunk to the bids the outfit gets.

You didn’t get to sew, but helping someone who needs it is way more important. Even your dolls would agree.
