Happy Saturday and Happy Winner!

Hi everyone,
If ever there was a weekend to NOT go on the 100-mile yard sale, it was this weekend. We have discovered Friday’s are the best day to go as Thursday is kind of sparse; not everyone has their stuff out. Friday is close to the weekend and people are getting ready for the Saturday crowds. Saturday is TOO crowded and the traffic and watching for cars zooming by is not my favorite… Sunday is out because of Church… but I’d think most things would be too picked over by then anyway. They have another 100 mile yard sale going the opposite direction on Labor Day weekend, so maybe we can make that one…

Anyway, we do have a winner and my hubby picked this one, without knowing IT IS HER BIRTHDAY! It’s Laura who is our Winner! Congratulations and I’ll get it out to you Monday… Happiest of Birthday’s to you and many more!!!

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and enjoy whatever it is you will be doing!
See you all Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

A belated happy birthday to you, Laura, and congratulations on winning the tote! That is wonderful.

I’m with a number of you here in that I cook (and I’m actually a pretty good cook and, when younger, a somewhat adventurous one–I once fixed beef heart!!) but I’d really rather sew! I always say, I only have a kitchen because it came with the house! πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜‚ Now that I’m alone, I still do cook, but if I’m going to make something “big”, like a casserole, it has to one that freezes well, so I don’t have to eat it for several days in a row! For example, right now in the freezer I have taco soup, some ground beef/noodle/tomato sauce hotdish, some sausage/peppers/onion/pasta hotdish, several slices of ham, three slices of pork roast (which I might shred and put into BBQ sauce for sandwiches), and some cooked bacon! I also make my own chicken strips, as they freeze quite well, too, and just need to be nuked once they’re thawed.

Anne, I’m so glad to hear that that needle didn’t damage Sam’s finger any more than it did. To have it go thru the bone and yet not break it, is pretty miraculous!

    1. Yes, I like your freezer idea. I use my freezer a lot. I transfer things in zip lock bags, sometimes freeze portions on a large plate, set it on top of the pizza boxes πŸ™‚ then when frozen, put together in a gallon zip bag. I try to keep my freezer organized and use clear zip bags for almost everything. I also used to be far more adventurous.
We do not eat dinner late because both of us get a bit of “heart burn” if we eat too late in the evening.
I like cooking and baking. I love sewing much more.

I rarely use ziplock bags, except for a few certain things. I use Tupperware almost exclusively in my freezer, and my fridge, too! I have LOTS of it–I used to be a TW lady, back in 1976! And before we were married, a friend had a TW shower for me, so we even started married life with quite a few pieces. I’m still using some of those, 52 years later, as well as newer pieces. I always head to the TW booth at the fair, and usually at least one or two items come home with me!

Oh gosh, I did write a congrats and another Happy Birthday to Laura earlier, but it doesn’t seem to have gone through.

It looks like another gloomy cloudy day here, and even chilly too! No backyard barbecuing for us today!

Anne, so happy to hear that Sam is getting better and looks like she will have a good recovery.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone!

  3. Hooray, Good morning everyone, another Jeanne post of news!
congratulations Laura on this win and Happy Birthday !! πŸ’
Now you have a cutie little tote bag!
Thank you all of you for your comments on kitchen duty.
I do not enjoy making meals anymore. I think I mentioned some days ago? I make 4 sandwiches for hubbs, every 4 days, and set them in a bin in the fridge for him so he does not have to make sandwiches. I do this because it is easier for him. with his glaucoma, half the time he can’t find things in the fridge to begin with. I do not mind doing this.
Dinner things, I just throw together meals for him, something moderately substantial so he does not snack too much. Every now and then I like cooking something but it is rare and it is not fancy. I have not cooked fancy stuff in ages. I could, but most of that fare was higher calorie and kind of not so healthy.
thank you all of you who shared your meal prep adventures.
My hubbs has never enjoyed cooking, but he has enjoyed my simple cooking in the past.
We have had steady rain for two days now! incredible. we really need rain in Northern Virginia. The sky has been very deep gray and we have the lights on and this morning, the heat is on!
I was busy all day yesterday putting closet maid shelves in one closet and putting all of the tools etc light bulbs and now it looks sort of neat and tidy.
Jeanne, again, so sorry you can not go to the mile long yard sale. Just think of all of the $$$$ you will save and can splurge on something else that might be superb quality!
Anne, I am happy that Sam is improving and very fortunate with this injury. Things happen. Yes, the feeling will return eventually, sometimes it takes up to a year.
Love to all of you. Thank you for your loved ones that eagerly offered their time and lives serving our country. We are blessed.

What a great pick George did for Laura, again, Happy Birthday!

I missed all the cooking yesterday but I can say today, yes I cook and Peyton does some too. We take turns cooking breakfast on the days we aren’t going to the Y. Today I will make his favorite, Eggs Benedict. He always makes fried eggs and Toad in the Hole on Sunday and some days, biscuits for us to put on cane syrup, other days he makes my favorite, cheese grits. I some times make “Garden Eggs” for breakfast which is full of veggies, eggs and cheese. Dinner I love to make spaghetti sauce and put it in small containers in the freezer, nice to have when we don’t have anything else. When we have meat he cooks it in the air fryer and I cook the rest, always fresh veggies and fruit or salad. When we go to the grocery store we each have our own lists and carts, then meet up when done. He takes the food, I take the car keys and have the car warm or cold depending on the weather. We do this after our time at our water aerobics. I am so blessed that we are still able to do all this together at our age. Thank God and the Y.

A big congrats to Laura, on her happy birthday win! Jeanne, tell George, that he picked the perfect winner and thank you for the giveaway.
So many great cooks here on Jeanne’s blog. All the ideas and things everyone makes sound delicious. I too can cook and have specialty requested items, but I have found that the only way that I can lose weight is to only make things rarely now. Not eating dinner really helps too, but I usually limit myself to a small salad with no dressing and some apple slices. I still have a simple breakfast and lunch. I’ve lost about 35 pounds over two years and am now at 126 or there abouts. So much better for me. No drugs, just no dinner. And, I’m not perfect. I slide up and down a few pounds depending on if I’ve had a lot of food, but then, eat less to get back to my desired number. Works for me. Still need to ditch about five more pounds though.
As to the rainy three day weekend some are experiencing, here we woke up to unpredicted moisture on the deck. Enough sprinkles to wet down everything so that I won’t need to water today. Glad we’re not out camping some place like we did in our youth. Have a fun weekend everyone.

  6. Thank you so much, Jeanne, and to George for drawing my name. That was quite a surprise. I’m sure my Rubies will be very good and take turns.

I didn’t get to weigh in on the cooking yesterday, but I enjoy cooking very much as well as trying out new recipes. I also like to make things “fancy” by cutting veggies in fun shapes or extra touches. I’m a very efficient cook so can make a main dish, sides, salad, and dessert in basically an hour. My grandmother and mother taught me how to make many things at the same time to get it all on the table together. What I like even more though is baking. Trying new baking recipes is super fun.

Happy birthday Laura and congratulations on your win.

Last night Kai was supposed to be cooking but she piked out again! Since there was nothing defrosted, I made cheese omelets and salad for Sam and I. I don’t think there is a single meal that everyone will eat so on my turn I cook what Sam and I want and Sam and Kai cook for the fussiest two. They get tired of the same thing all the time but dislike so many things it is really hard to give them a variety.

Rosemary, we could do with some of your rain! Would you like to send some our way.

We have a long weekend next weekend for King’s Birthday. It always amuses me that here in NZ (and I think in Australia too) we celebrate it with a holiday and in UK they don’t. It is celebrated of course with the Trooping of the Colour but not with a holiday. (I checked and in OZ most of the states celebrate it the next weekend [June 8th] except for Queensland who have their holiday in October.) Just an excuse for another long weekend but who’s complaining!

    Have a blessed Sunday
