My sitting room is now comfy in “Comfort Gray”

Don’t write this Sherwin Williams paint color off just yet… it’s far from gray. It’s in the green family and is called a chameleon of paint colors… it can be blue, green or gray depending on the light in your room.

My hubby wanted Oyster Bay, one color below Comfort Gray, but I talked him into going with the lighter color right above it and I’m so glad I did!

It was pretty bright in here when I was trying to take some pictures, so I’m not sure you can see the real color of it. (It’s kind of reminding me of Isabelle’s aqua dress color… remember that fiasco? I could NOT get the color to come out right… and ended up pretty much saying it’s mint green even though it looked blue.)

I’ll show you a few pictures I took and then I’ll show you what it looks like from some professional pictures. My pictures are just of one coat so it will look better when there is another coat of paint added…

Can you see how soothing and calming of a color it is… it’s very soft and while it’s “sort of” like the Verde Antique we had, it’s not the same kind of feel now. In some of my pictures you can see the difference in the shade of green both colors are…

Behind this door is a cedar closet and I’m going to use my best fluttery eyelashes and see if I can talk my hubby into changing the trim to the flat 1 x 4’s we used in the kitchen, our bedroom and Rebecca’s bedroom… Originally we were going to do the more victorian look, but now I want it to all be the same… You can see how white the Snowbound color is on the trim up by the ceiling compared to the Colonial White on the door and facings below… I’m really hoping to change that…

You can see how it appears as you look into Rebecca’s room…

Another shot so you can see the color…

I took a panoramic shot of the walls I managed to get painted today… it’s a bit wavy but you’ll get the idea…

Some of the grooves in the paneling needed LOTS of tender loving care in the form of “spackle!” I spent quite a while trying to smooth out holes and cracks and pieces that had just fallen out.. here’s a sample of what I was up against…

Here are some “PRETTY” shots of rooms done in Comfort Gray that I got off Pinterest and Google.

I do get a lot of light through this big picture window on the opposite side of the room. My hubby and I put in. It is actually 3 windows that we stacked side by side to fill in the area. There was a window there, but it was pretty awful and had a crack in one of the windows, so we bought 3 and put them together to make a big picture window. Because I didn’t have too much to show you besides a few painted walls, I thought I’d show you the process we went through to put in this big window in the sitting room. It was back in December, 2010 and we were racing against the clock to get this window finished by midnight because there was some kind of energy credit you could get if you got your windows installed by December 31st. I remember it was freezing cold the day we finished AND it was well into the night that we worked.

The original window was bigger so we raised the bottom up to fit the windows we had bought.

It was a big job ripping it out and making sure we knew what we were doing… (we didn’t!) but we sure learned quickly! :o)

I got a few of my pictures out of order, but I’m too tired to change them… so just ignore the ones out of order…

Well, that was my day…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I see what you mean about that “Comfort Gray” being a sort of “chameleon” color–even in the professional pictures, it looks different from one to another, depending on the things placed in the room and, of course, the light there.

I am really liking the “Snowbound” trim, and hope the door gets the same treatment! Your house will really be gorgeous inside once this project is done!!

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your front window installation. What a job That was!! But it sure does look nice!

No sewing for me today, but I did chat with my friend Tonya (in Utah), and we discussed our “twinsie challenge” projects. Every year we go to the big sewing expo, and every year we make something special. It started when I wore a blouse I had made, and Tonya said, “Oh, I have that fabric, and I made a blouse, too!” so the next year we both brought our blouses and wore them on the same day. We even had a class together, and had a lot of fun trying to get people to “notice” what we had in common! That year we bought the exact same fabric for a top, and the following year, we wore our matching tops, again, on the same day. One year it was a bag….(We use the same fabric, but different patterns.)

Well, at Expo 2020 we bought black boiled wool blend for jackets, but of course this year Expo was virtual, and neither of us had gotten our jackets done! BUT we still shopped, and each bought French terry for another jacket or top!! Same color. Bought online, after phone conversations! So now we need to make TWO “twinsie” things! Expo is the 9th weekend of the year, which means we have about 4+ months to get them done!!

    1. Hi Charlotte, what did you end up ordering from The Queen’s Treasures? Did your girls get their own baking set?

      1. Charlotte Trayer

I’m still thinking about that, Laura. I saw several things that intrigued me, but I really Had to get to bed, too!! I will go back and look again! I’m sure my girls would love some of the baking/cooking sets, and some other things, as well! I’m sure their lists will be long! 😉

    2. HI Charlotte,
Yes, this paint is quite different shades all throughout the day…It’s kind of fun… watching it change from color to color. I really do like it.

I’m hoping that closet door gets some Snowbound soon too with the new trim…
      Please, pretty please honey!

That big window WAS a huge project… and one of many windows we put in… we got better and faster with each one we did! :o)

It’s fun that you have such a good friend and can do all that fun stuff together! I hope it never stops! :o)

      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Linda in St. Louis

It’s nice to see your house go from an “ugly duckling” to a beautiful swan, Jeanne! Boy, you sure did take on quite a renovation when you bought that house, but it is turning out so nice!

I love the color you picked! It certainly brightens up the room, and makes it look more inviting. Tell me though, what do you do in this “sitting room”? I’m curious, because if I know the two of you, there probably isn’t much sitting done anywhere, except at your sewing machine! Is it actually meant to be a bedroom? A guest room? What do people do in sitting rooms nowadays?

I think the three separate windows look a lot better than that one big picture window did, which was totally out of character for the house. Good job!

I have some Halloween pictures for you that I will send. Due to my knee surgery, I didn’t go “all out” this year, but I do have some to send. Hang on!

    1. HI Linda,
Our house certainly has had it’s Ugly Duckling moments… if we ever were to sell this house, it would take us days to show the new owners what all we have replaced and put in new…

The new paint really does brighten up the room and I’m glad it’s what was decided upon… The sitting room is just a room that is off both of the bedrooms, the computer is at the end of it and that closet is beside the computer area. My hubby’s office/laundry/files/bookshelf/Reuben’s hangout is off this room too. There is that big picture window on one side and a smaller window that we put in at the end of the house by the computer. We have a loveseat back there and we sit and talk and Reuben likes it there… He used to always run to the loveseat when Rebecca got home from work. He would wait for her to rub his belly… :o)

      I got your pictures today… thanks! I’ll use them…

      Tonight we are going out for Kristoffer’s birthday… he’s 34 today… how can that be… I just delivered him 2 weeks ago! :o) :o)

      It’s Mexican night I think…

      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

I think the Comfort Gray will definitely go with your new flooring. So much lighter than the previous green and with Snowbound for the trim, it will be delightful. Looks like the room is more of a study/reading area with the computer alcove? We are book lovers around here too. I’ve weeded out my old teaching stuff and now we can add more history/reference volumes to the book wall that have been languishing in piles or boxes. Always something more to do. So glad the room will be finalized soon with the painting, and then floor can begin. 🙂
More rain around here. The ground appears to be soaking it up and the trees are so happy. 🙂

    1. HI Joy,
I think ANY new flooring would look nice with this, but especially what we picked out.. it’s called Moonlight… So we’ll have Comforting gray moonlight! :o)

The sitting room is just that… George sits on the loveseat and talks to me, or he reads or I do… Or Reuben sometimes beats us there and he likes to nap on it. Sometimes it’s nice to sit there and look out the picture window and answer comments.. :o) We do have a huge bookshelf that is loaded with books… as you’ve already seen in the new guest room…

The mattress was delivered today, but my day was filled with visiting, going out to lunch with my hubby’s sister and niece and their hubby’s. Then I had to leave and go to the Food Pantry and when I got home Kristoffer was here working on his truck. I think we are going out for Mexican tonight… today is his birthday! My baby’s 34!

It’s nice to hear you are getting some rain… I know you needed it!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Happy 34 to Kris! Our baby will turn 40 in early November. Can’t believe that at all. 🙂

  4. Jeanne, the Comfort Gray is exactly what it says. It’s a beautiful color and is soothing and comforting. I see in your pictures that it’s a light minty greenish-leaning towards gray. How they capture that in paint, who knows. I for one, love it. That was a good color choice to use.
It is amazing renovation work you and George have done on your home all these years. Your home is really lovely and so is the property.

It was nice to see pictures of Rebecca and Karn too. Thank you for the updates.

I love the RRFF dresses. Like so many, it’s hard to chose a favorite. They are beautiful Christmas dresses.

    1. Thanks Paula,
I’m glad you like my new paint color. I’m really liking it too and can’t wait to get it all one color so I can see what it REALLY looks like in here… I still have several walls that are the old color…

Thank you for your kind compliments on the RRFF dresses. They are just laying on my cutting table, smiling away at who knows what… I think I just might miss these dresses… it was fun and just what I needed to get me back to sewing!
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Marilyn in Colorado

I think you probably ended up with the look George was after. The paint chip color looks more intense on the wall than on the chip.
Paint also looks different when you stand back than it does while you are up close painting.

I think your choice was good — the room will look new and fresh, but still familiar because it’s still somewhat green.

It’s a pretty day here. I’ll go for a walk. I have to get stronger or I’ll never be able to stand on a ladder again.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I breathed a huge sigh of relief when my hubby walked in the room while I was in the middle of painting and said, “I like it… I like the color now!” I was so hoping he would say that and he did! YAY!

It’s been a pretty day here, but slightly on the cool side… the high was only 63 I think… and a little bit breezy…

Yes, you can walk but no ladders for you… my hubby will come and be your stunt double or your understudy if you have to be on a ladder. He’s had LOTS of experience! :o)

      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Thank so much much Dorothy and Susette for your kind comments on my photos yesterday.

The Comfort Gray is a soft relaxing color and I can see the blue/gray/green depending on what else is in the room.
It reminds me of the line from Sarah, Plain and Tall (book or movie) where Caleb says, “Blue, and gray, and green, Look, Sarah’s brought the sea”.

    1. HI Laura,
Thanks for liking my new color too… I don’t know how I would have felt if all the Sofa Sisters had said, “Uh… I’m not sure I like it..” Some people commented that the color was spa-like… “yes, that’s me… I have a spa in my home!” :o)

      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Joy in northern CA

Loved the “book” Sarah, Plain and Tall, and the sea quote, as well as her beloved kitty. 🙂

      1. Charlotte Trayer

Same here! I’ve seen the movie (actually, there are three different ones, all with the same four main characters) several times, and read the book. One of my favorites!

  7. Susette from Southern California

I’m glad you were able to nix battleship gray. Why don’t we ever see pictures of you up on the ladder or stool, painting away? I’m thinking you’ve done all of the painting except for maybe a ceiling or two. Hope you’ll be back to sewing soon. The Christmas dresses are lovely 🥰! The time goes by so fast the older one gets! ❤️

    1. HI Susette,
It’s funny, but my hubby said, “please don’t pick gray…” yet he picked the color that was the grayest… Oyster Bay which was darker than a lot of samples I got at Sherwin Williams and Lowes. I think it would have really been dark in here if I had given in and went with OB…

Yes, my painting days are getting fewer and fewer…
Thanks Susette…. I’m glad you like the girls dresses…
      Blessings, Jeanne

Laura, I knew the photos yesterday were yours so why I said Linda I have no idea but I am very sorry for muddling the names.

Jeanne I can’t believe how much you and George do without help. I love the colour and I love what you did with the windows. Putting three in instead of one was inspired.

Looking forward to you getting back to your sewing machine.

    1. HI Anne,
We learned a long time ago, we were our own best partners and we each bring something different to the table… we each have our own strengths and talents… and we work very well together… It was a nice compliment to me one time when we were working on some dorms and he asked for me to be his partner, because I understood him and knew his tools! :o)

I’m ready for some sewing too!
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Kathie from Omaha

The pictures of the three windows instead of one big one gives me hope if anything happens to our big windows. They are HUGE and would be an arm and a leg to replace but the three together are beautiful and I would love that too.
The grey looks so up to date and will be awesome with the floor. Grey with white trim couldn’t be prettier and you can choose anything for a pop of color. The end is really in sight now🤗
Have a fun weekend…my daughter, granddaughter and I are going to a craft fair tomorrow. Been years since we have done it. I suppose we will do masks…but it will be fun.

    1. HI Kathie,
I know what you mean about those big windows being expensive… when we priced 3 separate windows as compared to one big one, it was a no brainer!

Thanks for the compliments on my room…I’m really liking the room now…it was SO overdue for an update and it was hard to decorate with that color of green that it was…

We are going out to celebrate Kristoffer’s birthday tonight… I wish a craft fair was in my weekend… I like going to them to see what is the “happening” craft right now… I hope you have fun!
      Blessings, Jeanne

Your sitting room is going to be delightful even if all you ever do is walk through it on the way to somewhere else. The color of both the woodwork and the walls is very nice. Can’t wait to see it all with the new flooring. Your renovation of the windows was genius. They look so much better than the original.

Paula wondered how they get the effects they want in paints. I once worked for a paint manufacturing company. It’s pretty amazing what all goes into paint development. It’s kind of like what you might find where people are developing recipes only with paint they are called formulas. And there is a lot of chemistry involved. Some of the formulas are several pages long and you might find variations of colors using the basic formula listed as A, B, C, etc.

This has certainly turned out to be a weird day, especially for my son’s family. Sean dropped Dionne and Skyy off at the hospital around 11:45 a.m. for Skyy’s surgery and he and Azure came out here to collect the money for this weeks job. After he was finished here he planned to meet Dionne at the hospital and have lunch in the cafeteria while Skyy was in surgery. Dionne was told that Skyy was to have nothing to eat after midnight except for a light snack in the morning. She gave him what she thought was a light snack – a granola bar. Everything was ready to go at the hospital and suddenly it was decided they could not proceed because the snack had not been light enough. Specific snack items were not specified and Dionne didn’t ask. So Sean got a call to come pick them up at the hospital and they rescheduled for Monday. I ended up not having Jaiden today since Sean was only coming out to pick up his pay and then would be returning rather than being here the whole day. My time with her would have been short and I would have had to take her back, so she just spent the afternoon with a friend. I have spent the last two days working on logistics with Dionne because the parameters of who, what and where kept changing. I think things are set for Monday, but who knows.

I’m still trying to finish Stella’s blouse. It seems every time I head that way something intervenes.

    1. Joy in northern CA

So sad for the snack misinterpretation. Wouldn’t you think a hospital/doctor would have specified exactly what was allowed? Toast? Fruit? Come on those in charge, let’s get on the ball. And I guess Skyy, will have to miss today as well as Monday and maybe Tuesday from school. Hope all goes well Monday.

      1. Barbara in SE Texas

My sentiments exactly. Dionne is a young mother and doesn’t know what to ask. When they didn’t give her specifics she thought it was her discretion. Since she wouldn’t call a granola bar anything but a snack it made sense to her. Skyy was actually off from school today and would have had the weekend to recover. Now as you said he will miss Monday and most likely Tuesday.

    2. HI Barbara,
I think the color is so nice, it will become more of a useable room. We do use it for reading, the computer is at the end of this room, the bedrooms and my hubby’s office are all off this room. We’ve always had “building supplies” and stuff back here… right now we have our flooring back here… but it will be nice when it’s finished and just another pretty room in our house… I can’t wait! :o)

I did a little researching on the colors used in the formulas for the paints I liked… I’m not a big fan of colors that have too much yellow in them…and I’m not too hot on lavender tones on the walls either… (how did I ever stand my bedroom all these years???)

Well, so sorry for the delay on the surgery, but better safe than sorry when it comes to getting choked on something… I hope Skyy has an okay weekend while waiting for Monday to arrive…

Maybe even YOU can find some time in your sewing room… I only stepped foot in my room today to show my company the girls new Christmas dresses. My SIL just ooohhhed and ahhhed over them… she was quite enamored with them… I felt like a proud momma! :o)
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. Susette from Southern California

Having done medical transcription when it was still a job, nothing by mouth is a matter of life and death. Thank heavens she was honest enough to admit what he had eaten. Aspiration of stomach contents is an anesthesiologist’s nightmare. I did a report once on a lady who actually was an anesthesiologist who had broken her leg while picking peaches in her backyard. She had forgotten to tell the attending anesthesiologist and almost died of aspiration! Nothing can be as clear as the word “nothing.” Transcription has been automated for some time now. Sorry to get so serious but it may save a life. My daughter-in-law actually took a huge wad of gum out of a patient’s mouth on the operating table one time before surgery!

    1. HI Susette,
I take it seriously when told nothing after midnight or only something light… I have heard some horror stories about aspiration… nothing to mess around with…
Yikes… gum? On the operating table? I can’t imagine that!!!

Thanks Susette, I think we’ll dub you the Sofa Sisters nurse! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Susette from Southern California

Sorry, not even something “light.” It’s not worth it. Your esophagus and lungs don’t know the difference.

        1. Barbara in SE Texas

Usually they just say nothing after midnight and that probably would have been the end of it. My mother was a nurse so I learned many things from her but Dionne doesn’t have the same point of reference so she wouldn’t even consider why they say nothing. Before David’s heart surgery he could only take his medication with a sip of water.

          1. Susette from Southern California

Thank goodness she told them. Good Mom. Best to the adventurous little one. ❤️

  12. Anne Coldron in New Zealand

Barbara, I think saying he could have a light snack was a major mistake. Here it always says nothing after midnight. ‘Light snack’ could mean different things to different people! I would have thought a granola bar could be considered a light snack so would have been safer for them to stick to nothing or specify what constitutes light!
Sam had to take Jonathan for grommets when he was quite young. He wasn’t allowed anything after his evening meal so being a really good Mum she said she wouldn’t either. They both went to the hospital the next morning, both starving, surgery was running late (often happens because an emergency or two come in so non-urgent surgery has to wait). It was afternoon before they got to theatre (still both starving) to find the doctor who had put him down for surgery was away and the person doing it looked in Jono’s ears and said he didn’t need grommets, goodbye. Sam was fuming, so was the original doctor when he saw Jono for his post op check up and found he hadn’t had it done!

I have been very busy with planting my small vege boxes and pots and hanging baskets on the deck. Sam and the girls came around to help for which I was grateful. I still need to get a few more flower plants but it is obviously a bit early for some so will get them in a couple of weeks when there is no danger of a sudden late frost. A few years ago I had bought all my plants and got half of them in and we had a -5 on 5th November which is incredibly late here, not to mention that these days with global warming -5 is unusual as well, the grapevine lost all its new leaves and flower buds and I lost about half of the bedding plants. I keep a sharp eye on the weather forecast now until halfway through November so I can cover the grapevine with sheets and put the pots under the veranda.

I will send the photos of Sara when I take her out of her box and let her meet her new friends.
