A new doll coat is born…

We’re going to see the “tax guy” Thursday, so my day was spent on bookwork instead of sewing… UGH! I’d much rather be in my sewing room!

However my hubby got tired of doing all the paperwork, so when he called it quits this evening, I scrambled into my sewing room and got my doll coat finished…

Well, some of you guessed it and some of you were “almost” right…

It’s for Sara again… sorry… she wanted another “something” so bad and this purple looked pretty cute next to her blonde hair, so I said she could get it. I know most people are thinking of Spring, but I was determined to get at least ONE coat made this winter…and it’s technically still winter… Lots of places still have snow!

It’s just a lightweight coat without a lining, so it “could” be called a Spring coat… you know, like for Easter! :o)

I showed you the pattern I wanted to use, but it was for a chubby/baby kind of doll…

…and I wanted it for a slimmer kind of doll, so with some taking in and letting out in certain places, I did a quick mock up coat in these “wonderful” colors…

I did it in those colors so I could see where the princess lines fell on her body…

I could tell the neckline needed to come in some… it was WAY too wide for her slim neck…

Then with a little more work, this came out… “Ta-da!”

Sara was pretty pleased… the stand up collar is made from a pinwale black corduroy and the buttons are some little purple ones I already had…

I sewed the buttons on in two groupings of three..

There are 3 black snaps under the buttons…

It’s really a pretty color of corduroy and makes a wonderful coat…

I thought the back needed to be taken in just a bit to make it more form fitting…

So I made a belt like piece and stitched it on with buttons over a piece of gathered elastic sewn on the inside of the coat…

It pulled in the sides just enough to make it a little more flattering…

Here’s a close up..

I will keep working on the dress and other pieces and hopefully show you the rest tomorrow… I hope you’ll come back to see what else got made…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, my, I just LOVE this coat! I’d better keep the laptop locked up once it goes on ebay, as I know two little girls who will be trying to sneak in bids when I’m not looking!!

Our big Sewing Expo is this weekend. Usually, it’s at the fairgrounds in Puyallup, and is the largest sewing show in the USA. One year recently, they said 22,000 attendees over the course of four days, and over 400 vendors. I thoroughly enjoyed it last year (well, the last 25 years), but then….Covid.

They are doing it virtually this year, and I just don’t “do” virtual, so I will not be “attending.” So, I have a couple of special outings, etc., planned. Today, for instance, I went to Barnes & Noble and got a sewing book (smaller doll clothes–it’s called Tiny Wardrobe–that I am hoping will work for dolls like Gigi and the Bonekas), a sewing magazine (Piecework), and a pencil puzzle magazine! I took a picture and shared it on FB tonight. Tomorrow I have another outing planned, a bit further from home. Stay tuned!

  2. Beautiful coloring with Sara! I just knew it would be for either her or Rozen, when i saw the pattern pieces you changed a bit! That fits her perfectly and I love the stand up collar in black! Am I seeing things, or do you have two black slits on each side where a pocket would be? If not, I think two black flaps there would be cute, that would just be false pockets. I love the back too, with what you did! Just wonderful, Jeanne!

Have fun with the tax man today! Michael was an accountant, so he does our taxes online, and we already got our refund! Of course we are both retired and not working anymore, so a lot easier than your situation.

  3. Beautiful! I love corduroy and this print is amazing. Makes me want to find some to purchase. The color looks fantastic on her and I can’t to see the finished project. I’m with Linda D on the faux pockets. Nice touch and it ties in with the collar.

I have a fun filled day. No! Occupational therapy as I have a torn Rotator Cuff then off to the eye doctor for yearly exam.

  4. That is adorable, and the fit looks great. I like the little belt in the back. It solved the “perfect fit” challenge, and it is a cute little detail. I will check back tomorrow to see if the dress is done. I really, really need to work on my tax paperwork. Maybe this weekend. If I don’t get it to the CPA by the first week in March, he won’t get it filed in April and will have to get an extension.

  5. I’m with Linda and Sandra on the slit pocket detail whether they are there now or could be added. Very difficult for me to see the black collar detail in the photos even when enlarged. I saw on the original pattern that it called for a button on the collar part. I wonder if a button on the black might make it more defined? Black is so hard to photo. It would be great to see some outdoor shots if weather permits. Can’t wait for the dress. Maybe Sara needs a little box hat and a slim clutch black bag to tuck under her arm to complete the outfit. I think it will be a very versatile outfit.
I finally opened the box in which my Lowe girls arrived. I was so worried that having been in the extremely cold weather for days in an unheated warehouse that their resin may have been damaged. But, they were just fine and are out of the confined space and ready to play in CA. Hoping to get a picture today of them and my latest Meadow girl if the wind cooperates.

    1. I answered your question late yesterday about the pattern I used for my 16″ doll’s overalls. In case you didn’t catch it last night and to save you the trouble of going back, here it is again. I’m not a pattern maker either. I used the AGAT overall pattern from Pixie Faire (QTπ pattern) . My 16″ rescue doll fits the AGAT patterns nearly perfectly. If it’s something that is more fitted, I add a little to the back because she is a little broader in the torso than my AGAT doll. I will send a picture as soon as I finish the t-shirt.

      1. Thanks Barbara. I haven’t tried making anything for the AGAT girls that live here. Poor things. I’m going to take a look at the pattern. 🙂

  6. I’m with everyone regarding the faux pocket flaps along the line of the seam to tie in the black collar. The belt in back might want to be black as well so the paisley buttons would show up better. Have fun.

I have a business finance degree so no excuse not to do the taxes myself. Only had a problem once in decades when I neglected to include a piece of necessary documentation. Already in the mail. There’s a new form for those over 65. The print is larger, ha, ha.

  7. The style and color on Sara looks really pretty. Perfect for her. Hopefully we can see the dress tomorrow.

Joy, hope you send us pictures of your new girls?
Charlotte, hopefully next year will be different for everyone and you can attend the Seeing Expo.
A lot has been cancel this year.

Have a nice day – hope the sun is shining for everyone.

  8. Super cute coat! I agree on the pocket flaps. There needs to be a touch more black to make the collar and coat cohesive. Yesterday I thought it might be black cuffs.

  9. Very pretty and I definitely like the back detail. looking forward to seeing the dress with it.
I think black cuffs would be very nice. The dressy little girl coats I bought for my daughter had velvet collars and cuffs either matching the wool coat – I bought a wine and dark green or black cuffs on the purple one. That one had frog closures.

  10. I love this coat and I like the idea of the pocket flaps. I love the look of pocket flaps. Remember the coats that used to be so popular for children with the velvet collar, cuffs and pocket flaps? Can’t wait to see the dress that will accompany the coat.

I do our taxes and they are a nightmare. I do not have an accountant mind but I’m good at organizing. I use a tax program to do them. Once the initial year is done, the following years are there for editing. Much easier than starting over every year. We have a little income from a lot of places so there is a lot of record keeping involved. I don’t worry about it until about mid-March then I purge the files of last years paperwork and have all that at my fingertips. I dedicate the time to the taxes and everything else has to wait. I usually can get it done in a couple days then. Since our income is so erratic and most of it comes in the last quarter of the year (farm income), we always end up owing something. I’d probably get it done sooner if I was expecting a refund.

  11. The coat is lovely, I love the ‘belt’ on the back and the touch of black on the collar just finishes the look. Sara looks very swish.
No tax worries for me. only form I have to submit is my charitable donations which is one A4 form and I attach the receipts. Apart from selling a few things at the market I don’t have any other income than my pension which is already taxed correctly. They do have people watching the sites like Trade Me and Facebook market place and such like but as long as any extra income from hobbies does not exceed $1000 profit you don’t have to declare it. I have no worries there since I am always spending money on craft stuff even if I never use it lol! And we don’t have to submit a tax return if your income comes from wages or other income they can track. If they owe you money they send it to you, if you owe them money they only ask for it if it exceeds $200. If, for some reason, you think they might owe you money they haven’t sent you can ask for a form and submit it. Their slogan is “It’s our job to be fair”. I think they live up to that by and large if you are a wage earner. If you are a business you probably don’t have the same opinion lol

  12. She loves that coat…you can tell it in her smile! The rest of us love it too :0)
The rasperry colored dress will be cute too.
Off to dress a doll in an antique ivory dress with the prettiest lace the owner brought to use on it! Not enough hours in the day…

  13. 8″ of new snow seems to be melting quite quickly, but there’s still plenty to make coats highly desirable. We usually have snow through April and often into May, so even another coat would work to go with our weather. You were right yesterday when you said that there would still be coat weather this year.

  14. Hi Jeanne,
Your outfit for Sarah is so lovely! Those colours…yum! I had that doll clothes pattern many years ago and made outfits for my little sister’s dolls. I made each of the pieces and esp. remember making the pleated dress on the right with red and white fabric. Look at the price–50cents! My sister was born in 1964, so I think the pattern is from the late 60’s, maybe 1970-71. I look forward to seeing your creations.

    1. Thank you Julie-Anne,
The pattern looks vaguely familiar to me too… I may have made doll clothes from it too and just don’t quite remember it… I love the pleated dress and might have to try my hand at resizing and customizing it too.
Thanks for your kind words about Sara’s outfit…
      Blessings, Jeanne
