Let me introduce you to my new SEWING TABLE…

It’s been a long time coming, hasn’t it? My first post dreaming about a new and better sewing table was back on May 7th. If you want, click on this link and read that post again, or just scroll down through the pictures in it to refresh your memory of what actually happened…and WHY I wanted a new sewing table in the first place.

I’ve Created a MONSTER in my sewing room…

…then continue with today’s post.

Today, we’re starting with the table top being flipped on its backside and we are attaching the “old” legs and support boards to the underside. Since I added about 5-6″ to the length of my new table, my hubby thought it was too long of a span without any support. But… my new table is actually cut “crooked” so it matches my walls… if you saw the pictures in the link above, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I wanted this new table to hug my walls even though they WERE crooked.

We first set the stained tabletop on the 2 end drawers… with a stool in the corner to hold it up… just to see what it was going to look like.

Then my hubby got on his back underneath the table and put the framed support pieced (with the legs screwed in temporarily) and held it up in place. I straightened up the end drawers and made sure the overhang was the same on both ends. He took a pencil and outlined all the 2 x 4’s on the underneath side. It took quite a while…

Next we took the sewing table top and laid it stained side down on the dining room table. The support boards were laid in between the lines on the bottom side of my table. I should have taken a picture of the lines all on the underside of my table top… but I think you can see some of the markings…

My OLD green sewing table was cut at 90 degree angles, but this table is custom fit to my walls, so it looks a bit strange when they are laid on my new top piece.

They look crooked and that’s because THEY ARE! But you’ll see it when it’s done… you’ll never know it is…

I took the support boards and the legs to the back of our house and painted them to match the drawers on the ends.

Then when I had sanded and filled holes and had it the way I wanted, we brought it back to the dining room table to be attached to the table top.

I could hardly wait to see what it was going to look like in my new sewing room. I was PRETTY sure I was going to like it.

AND I DO!!!!!!!!!!

Look how it hugs my wall now!!!

I couldn’t get far enough back to take very nice pictures, but I think you get the idea! Isn’t she a beauty! Isn’t my hubby wonderful?

We worked on it until the evening, and I wanted you to see the top without anything on it. Tomorrow I’ll get it all “dressed” up with my sewing machines! I think… I’d almost like to enjoy it for a few days like this! It’s slick as glass and really nice. It’s hard to believe all that has transpired in the last 3 months. I’ll get some new pictures taken soon, when I get EVERYTHING where it’s supposed to go now!

Thanks everyone,
Blessings, Jeanne

CONGRATULATIONS on your beautiful new sewing table! My goodness, what a lot of detail work went into getting it to fit your space Just Right!! I know that you will get a whole new level of joy out of your sewing now!!

  2. Just beautiful, Jeanne! I could hardly see anything crooked like you were mentioning, and it looks perfectly marvelous in it’s finished state! Give George a nice pat on the back for doing all the hard things to make this look so professional! And now we will see what beautiful things you will be making on this great piece of art!

LOVE your new sewing table. Kudos to you and your husband for all the labor and hard work. It is hard to have a vision and sometimes even more difficult to make it become a reality. You learn as you go and it has definitely paid off. I am so happy for you Jeanne. So with the kitchen remodel and the new floor and decor in your living area and your daughters room, it all has come together so beautifully.

  4. Don’t forget the kitchen when we are reviewing projects. Maybe you should go through the house (or house pictures) and give us a tour of completed projects. Instead of a pat on the back, maybe you could make George a big batch of his favorite cookies and share the recipe with us.

  5. What a wonderful way to start a new season, Jeanne! You three have done so much work in your house this year already. You’ll have creations flying off your table and out of your dream room in short order now. Enjoy….

    Blessings.

  6. I forgot to congratulate you on last night’s auction. During the last maybe 2 minutes the bids increased by $56, making it really exciting to watch — or participate. Some lucky buyer now has a lovely reminder of 100 years of women voting, though in states like Wyoming it was longer.
That’s two exciting auctions in a row. Now to see what’s up for the next one and who gets to wear it.

  7. That looks beautiful. It will be an awesome work space, so big and spacious. I would say all the work was worth it!

  8. Now I get it. For some reason, I thought the drawer sets were going to be left knee width apart on one side. I didn’t realize they would be end anchoring which is perfect. Then I saw those support legs and thought oh my! But, when the paint was applied they practically disappeared. I suppose it could have been hung from the wall, but with the siding would have been difficult. When your newly recovered chair is added and the machines, they won’t be noticed at all. I can’t tell you how nice it looks. Quite an amazing engineering feat to add that space. Love it. 🙂
Congrats on your latest sale. Perfect outfit and timing.
Around here, things are looking up. The lightning storm kept to the coast so no additional fires this morning. Some of the evacuees have been allowed to return home. Firefighters working around the clock. Now attention has gone to another big fire burning just over the hills in the south SF bay area. They had new evacuations yesterday. Hope this ends soon for CA.
Haven’t seen the hurricane updates today. Hope no one is in the way.

Dear Jeanne, the table looks perfect. You and your husband have worked so hard to create a wonderful sewing room so you can continue to make your magic happen.

I can’t wait to see it all set up. I bet the dollies are going to have a celebration for you!

  10. Congratulations on another successful auction. I wish now I had followed it. Sounds like it really got exciting. Considering all the lovely things you have made over the past few days when your sewing room renovation was not complete, I can’t even imagine what’s going to come out of your room when all the things are in place. What a beautiful sewing table. You and George are quite the team.

So glad to hear that Joy dodged the recent fire danger. Hopefully that will continue and it will all be over soon. We are still on hurricane watch here. Both hurricanes are due to hit the Louisiana coast, but Marco is still scheduled to head west from there. Yesterday it looked like it would pass to the north of us and our rain predictions weren’t much. David saw the weather this morning and now we are expecting 80% rain on Wednesday and 60% each day for a few days after that. We sure do need the rain. As long as it’s not windy we will be fine. We have a lot of trees, one a huge pecan right outside our front window. We’d prefer that one stay upright. It’s too soon to tell what kind of an event Marco will be, but they are still saying it would be no more than a Cat 1 when it hits landfall. Laura’s path seems to be northerly so thankfully we won’t get both, but we do have friends in Baton Rouge so we worry about them. After a brief stint tomorrow while David and Sean go look at an A/C job, it looks like I won’t be called into action to proctor the grandkids for a few days. Any scheduled A/C jobs are being put off until the hurricane passes.

  11. Wow! Your sewing table is a custom built piece of furniture. Is George a cabinet maker by trade? He does great work. Is there anything YOU can’t do? As a team, the 2 of you are unstoppable!

  12. It looks wonderful!!!!! Bravo, Bravo!!!! I’m so excited for you. Jeanne, you and your husband have done a wonderful job respecting the sewing room’s little glitches and still making it a wonderful room to work in. It’s so bright and cheery! Can’t wait to see all the pictures once you are completely done putting things away.

  13. That Table looks so nice! Amazingly it does not look crooked at all. It is generous enough for all your machines and tools too. The finishing you did to the wood looks so professional. The layers make such a difference. Have fun moving everything where you want it.
Nice sale on your “Get out the vote” ⭐️⭐️💫

  14. The table is lovely and so very useful, well done both of you. I need you to clone George and send him over here. I had to get someone in to fix my mixer tap in the kitchen yesterday. I asked him to look at my dishwasher to see if he could do that. Sadly it was beyond him and I will still have to get someone in to repair it (with a $90 call out fee, probably to tell me it is unrepairable!) or buy a new one. I think I will keep doing it by hand till I have paid for the TV and the laptop! My washing machine is over twenty years old and I live in dread of that giving up the ghost as well.
Our PM has extended the level 3 lockdown until Sunday so Auckland will have to wait a bit longer to have a bit more freedom, but we are all then staying in level 2 for another week after that. All this is on proviso we don’t have a massive spike in cases or a spread to other regions. Two of the cases caught it from travelling on the same bus as someone who had it so now masks are mandatory on all public transport from Monday No mask no travel.
Barbara, I will send the pictures to Jeanne and get her to forward them to you. By the way, ‘bikkies’ are ‘Kiwispeak’ for biscuits (or cookies). I had to learn a whole new language when I moved here even though they were supposedly speaking English lol. A story about a phrase that trips up most immigrants, usually only once! Parents were invited to something at school and the notice said ‘Ladies, a plate’. I couldn’t understand what they wanted a plate for but I duly took one along. When I got there I realised that the plate was supposed to have something on it! Fortunately there was a dairy next door (something like your little Mom and Pop stores) so I grabbed something to put on the plate thereby avoiding total embarrassment.
Jeanne, congratulations on your auction success, I look forward to seeing your next creation.

  15. It looks beautiful, Jeanne! It will be such a joy to work in. Even without it completely finished you have made three, well, four if you count Nora’s, incredible outfits. Hums “a spoonful of sugar” A new sewing room makes for auction winning outfits. 🙂 I missed the end of the auction last night. It’s always exciting to watch when it jumps by a lot.

  16. I’m so late commenting that I’ll second everything that’s been said. Congratulations on finishing up the sewing room in such style. You two sure are up to any tasks. Thanks for sharing all the details with us. Glad the auction went so well.
