One day closer to getting my sewing room finished…

We have GOT to be the slowest home renovators in town! You surely must think when I show these pictures, that we took lots of breaks and went out for lunch (drive thru) :o) and maybe even caught a nap this afternoon, but we didn’t. We have been working all day, and I just quit a few minutes ago… at a few minutes after midnight. All this prep stuff sure does take the longest amount of time. But it had to be done. So this is what we did today…

I’m not sure if all my pictures are in order or if you understand what I mean, but I’m so tired I really don’t care… just look at what we did, and smile… please smile! :o)

Remember it looked like this yesterday…so it was pretty exciting when we finally got our first piece of trim put on the siding part of the wall…

We got our boards cut for the corner… and my hubby did LOTS of caulking behind them. We used PVC boards so any moisture that might happen to get in, won’t hurt them or transfer the dampness inside.

…insulated the wall where a new strip of paneling was going to be fitted in. (fortunately we saved a long piece that we were able to reuse.) We had to cut a board to use as a bracer board to nail the paneling to.
We put the corner boards in place…and I filled the holes with spackle.

The second piece of trim went in…

The very corner ceiling tile in the corner was so brittle and soft, it broke off so we had to think of a way to cover up that hole up there. I decided we could use a piece of our trim and lay it down flat against the ceiling, and sort of think of it as our crown molding, if you will. :o) We had a 12′ piece so it went all the way across the ceiling without having to splice any seamed pieces in.

Because the new siding we uncovered isn’t flat like drywall, or even the paneling, and has sections where it’s close to the wall and sections where it juts out, we had to figure out how to get the corner to meet up with the trim we had there. I decided we needed to cut out a section of that window frame so the trim could rest against the ceiling and the wall at the same time. It’s probably too complicated to understand, but it was a several hours project.

So now it is all primed and ready to be painted, I think… unless I get up in the morning and see more areas that need another coat of primer. That trim along the ceiling is just incredible… I had no idea it would make it look so much better. The edge of the ceiling tiles were tired looking and a bit worn… now they are hidden and the new trim looks so wonderful up there. Even my hubby kept going back in there and standing back and looking at it! He did a LOT LOT LOT of caulking to fill in all the cracks and places that weren’t sealed up.

I’ll just say one more thing. It’s so pretty I just can’t believe it’s the same wall! :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

It looks just beautiful, Jeanne! Can’t wait to see it all finished!!

I’ve had a lot of pain today, so haven’t done much other than eat and sleep. I’m now going to take my muscle relaxant and half a pain pill, and go to bed. Hopefully tomorrow will be more comfortable for me, and I can do a few little things around here.

      1. Dear Charlotte, I do hope you feel better soon. I don’t know if this would help you, but my Papa (grandfather) who was the manager of a garden store and did all the tree grafting, propagating of seeds and other landscape work would come home bone tired and sit in a very hot bath with a couple of cups of Epsom Salts. He always said he “felt like a new man” afterwards. When I was there for weeks in the summer Nanny (my grandmother) and I would work hard in the garden and she thought Epsom salts helped ease soreness as well.

    1. Charlotte, I certainly hope that you turn the corner today, so to speak, in being not so sore. Maybe you need to get a hot tub! Wouldn’t that be fun?

    2. Dear Charlotte, I am so sorry you’ve had a bad day. Lots of rest is probably a good idea. After I had my car accident a few years ago, all I wanted to do was sleep. That went on for weeks. Probably because every time one injury healed another was begging for attention. Whatever you have to do will keep. I had to remind myself of that often. A big hug for a speedy recovery.

    3. So sorry the aches and pains are surfacing now. My hubby took a fall last week and his shoulder/ arm has been painful…he had a scan and he tore a tendon and hurt a muscle..the ortho can’t see him till next week but this is what they told him and it has really helped.
Alternate heat and cold for 20 Mins each. Tylenol arthritis every 4-6 hours…)or Advil but he can’t take Advil). Then Aspercreme with Lidocaine . This has helped a lot! It comes as a cream or a patch. The patch is more expensive for some reason. The cream is great…not greasy Take care!

    4. I’m so sorry you are so sore today, Charlotte… Nothing is as awful as feeling bad. I pray you recover quickly and are back in your sewing room in no time.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. What a difference between the first and last pictures, Jeanne! I love the crisp white of the wall paint, it almost looks like a new house there in the corner!

Now this is funny, but you have used George in quite a few of your daily blogs now, and we are getting to see a lot of his wardrobe of plaid shirts! How many does he have?? 🙂

Let’s hope the weather makes up it’s mind of what season this is. It’ has been too rainy and cool to do much outside, and I need to STILL plant annuals!!

    1. Hi Linda, Yes, I hope there’s still time and opportunity to get some annuals. Here in Ohio, lawn and garden store were non-essential and were closed, but our garden store is technically named a nursery and they were allowed to be open earlier because they always sell vegetables and fruit trees, so they fall under the food title that is essential.
I agree that we have had some rain, but until very recently it was oddly cold. Even had a frost/ freeze just the other night.

    2. HI Linda,
I’ve given the wall a first coat of the paint… Snowbound, which is the same as my kitchen cabinets will be and also the same color paint as the trim in Rebecca’s bedroom.
It REALLY looks crisp and clean now! I love it!

He’d kill me if he knew I was telling this, but one time I counted his shirts… and he had all kinds of shirts, short sleeve, long sleeve, work shirts, flannel shirts, etc. and I counted 104 shirts! We call him the Man from Plaid! :o)

  3. It’s absolutely beautiful! Just shows that perseverance and patience pay off. I hate the prep stage but you show how important and worthwhile it is.

    1. Gloria, Gloria, Gloria,
Thank you for your sweet card today and more! I sure didn’t expect to be still working on this room… I thought it was just going to be a new sewing table… guess I was wrong big time on this one! :o)
You are just the sweetest “sister” ever! I love you,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. You and George are the bomb!! Remodeling old homes is like opening a can of worms for every project. The results are beautiful! When we began remodeling a 50-year old house, it turned into one thing after the other… always more time consuming and expensive than originally thought.
    What’s next? Lol

    1. HI Shara,
It certainly is a new experience every time we do another project. This one was certainly unexpected, but I’m thrilled that it’s getting done. We call our house The Money Pit! Did you ever see that movie? It’s the best thing ever!
The first coat of paint is on the walls and even though it doesn’t look much different than the primer, it sure does in person. It’s just a little bit warm and so clean looking. I can hardly stand it… :o)
      What’s next? Who knows…
      Thanks Shara,
I hope you are all “unboxed” in your new house…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, it’s amazing! It does not look like the same wall. You have done an awesome job. I can’t wait to see it all come together.

Can you believe we are almost halfway through May? It’s kind of a different May this year, isn’t it? It’s colder than I remember May to be. I am declaring this the month of Yam (chuckle). I am waiting in wonderment for May 2021 when, I hope, we will have a May closer to the ones in the past.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
You are so right… it doesn’t look like the same wall at all! It’s much prettier in person too! Wish everyone could stand in my sewing room and just stare at it, like I have been doing! :o)

I was writing out some bills today and didn’t realize it was the 14th of May already. I’ve kind of had my head in the clouds I think… where IS May going? Slow down!
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. What a great cut/paste/patch job. It’s wonderful! Know it has been a lot of work, but so worth it. Can’t wait to see if you go for white or a different color. Hope you two aren’t too exhausted today.
My two new kids arrived yesterday three days early due to our great USPS. So glad we have their service. Now little Molly Meadow with her sometimes grumpy expression and a sweet Boneka both with pigtails are getting to know the others. If it dries out a bit, I’ll see if I can get a photo.
Looking forward to the next adventure of Jeanne and George at it again! 🙂

    1. HI Joy,
Thanks for the sideline cheering! I can hear you all the way from CA!
I decided to go for all white… well, it’s a soft white… a bit warm… it’s the same color as the trim in Rebecca’s room and the same color the trim in my kitchen is and my cabinets will be! (One of these days!) They were supposed to be next and I was going to use the “drawers” in the desk to “practice” my painting! But things turned out a little differently than I had planned.
2 new girls in your house! I bet you are in heaven a little bit! I haven’t seen a Molly doll very many times… I hope you can get her to smile! Pictures are always welcome, you know! :o)
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Oh so glad you went with the white. My favorite wall color. 🙂 I think that will brighten up your sewing space a lot. 🙂

  7. Step by step you and George are really making your sewing room smile and with a truly substantial fix in the mix. It must be such a good feeling to know that that leak is unearthed, dealt with (until the new roof can be installed) and the wall looks better than ever! The house is happy, the owners are happy and we’re all happy for you too!

    Blessings.

    1. Great job, but with the storms you have there, I hope a circuit breaker is the first thing that gets plugged in. It’s an amazing transformation. You’ll sure be inspired by your “new” sewing room. It’ll feel good to reclaim the rest of your house 🏡.

      1. Thanks Susette,
It’s turning out wonderfully so far and I’m just thrilled that this unexpected turn of events actually happened. I could have been sewing with that leaky roof for years to come… Hopefully we’ll get a new roof one of these days…
I can’t wait to get my house back in order. I was working in my sewing room a little tonight, sorting through things and seeing how I can combine things…
        Thanks Susette,
        Blessings, Jeanne

    2. HI Becky,
It does feel great to have my sewing room getting an update… an unplanned one, but much overdue I guess. We did my room right after we moved in here 16 years ago, because I wanted to get started sewing right away. Rebecca was helping me figure out how to streamline things a little more tonight… and make it a little more spacious. I hope I can do it!
      Thank you Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Looking good, Jeanne! George and you have certainly been hard at work. The white walls and trim make everything look so fresh and sparkly.
I like your sewing cabinet drawers from yesterday. The missing handle really doesn’t seem to matter. I’ll bet that drawer is nice and deep for patterns.

    1. HI Laura,
The new wall certainly brightens up the room very much and I’m loving it. The sun comes in and reflects off that wall, making the room very bright. I think I’m going to really like it white!
I haven’t figured out what I’ll put in that deep drawer, but it will be handy for “something!”
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Wow- it’s looking great!! It’s amazing how you are able to pull it together- Piecing it together with quality work. I really admire how both of you work your ideas out.

I love seeing your sewing projects but I also love seeing your lovely home creativity. Thank you for always having an interesting blog. Have a great day. Hope you can rest at some point!!

    1. HI Paula,
I think the Lord gives us at least half of the creative ideas we’ve had to use on this house… we were talking about that corner last night and both said, we didn’t think anyone would have done as thorough of a job as we did. It’s a good feeling knowing that! :o)

I’m glad even when I show home projects or recipes, that everyone seems to be okay with it. Thanks for your loyalty, Paula.
I found the email you sent me with the measurements on it and have all the information on a card…and I spotted the red fabric in my sewing cabinet. I might try to get to them tomorrow…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. It’s totally amazing what knowledge, experience and a whole lot of ingenuity can do to turn a sows ear into a silk purse. You and George have done a wonderful job on the wall. Once you get everything set up to your satisfaction, you probably won’t want to leave your sewing room. That would be fun for all of us. Looking forward to it.

    1. HI Barbara,
I’m hoping you are right about not wanting to leave my sewing room because I am SO far behind on my sewing, I could really use some time to catch up on things! :o)
Thank you so much for your very kind words!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. I am totally amazed at how great that corner looks! You would think it is a new house. The trim is such a clean finish! Way to go! You may think it has taken too long but when you see the finished corner you will be glad you made it perfect. Think how often you will see that spot and smile to yourself!
Have fun doing the last parts☺️

    1. HI Kathie,
It seems like this project has been going on forever, but I guess it hasn’t been that long! And a lot has happened…for the good! I’m loving it so far… can’t wait to get it all organized!
I WILL be smiling a lot when it’s all done and I sit at my machine and think back on this last week.
I’m glad I’ve had so many cheering me on too! Thanks Kathie!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. That ceiling fix looks amazing! Poor George–if he “belonged” here, I would have a list longer than my arm for him! LOL! It’s looking so fresh and pretty, Jeanne! You will enjoy working in there, knowing how well the “fix” was done. Lucky us!

    1. Hi Beth,
There was no drywall involved in this project, so my hubby was actually pretty good about the whole thing. Other than being tired, and a little frustrated at not being able to figure out the roof leak sooner, he’s been a great sport about all the stuff he’s had to take on. He has a garage space he likes to work in and he knows this sewing room is MY space.
Thanks so much for joining in Beth,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  13. Congratulations to you both for a fantastic job. The project was huge but worthwhile from both visual and practical standpoints. Surely you will soon run out of rooms to rebuild and refinish. Once you get the dining room table cleared off, it’s time for a rest and a movie, and then maybe a lovely but simple to prepare and easy to clean up dinner. Does such a thing exist?
