Addy’s “Second” crinoline is much better…

I wasn’t crazy about Addy’s crinoline. I thought it was pretty…at first…but then as I looked at it, I realized the yoke part of the crinoline was too skimpy. The yoke wasn’t long enough, so there weren’t enough gathers to make it fuller. You might not understand my what Im trying to say, but I bet you’ll understand when you see the pictures…

I needed it to be fuller right at the hipline to hold the dress out instead of being snug to her hips. I wanted her dress to flare out slightly, just below the waist and then get really full at the hem.

This picture is from “before.”

…and this is the new crinoline…

You can see how much longer I made my boning on the second crinoline.

I put the smaller, skimpier one inside the larger one.

I think it’s MUCH prettier than crinoline number one!

I was searching for some new pajamas for my mom today, so this is all I managed to get done.

Hopefully I’ll have more to show you tomorrow!!

Blessings Jeanne

  1. OH, yes, I do see what you mean, Jeanne! Crinoline #2 is much better, both in fullness and in general silhouette.

Hope you found some jammies for your mom! I find that most of what *I* like in jammies (Land’s End, Vermont Country Store) are pretty expensive, sometimes. I used to find nice flannel pjs at Sears, and they worked pretty well for me (although I always have to shorten the sleeves and legs), but we lost our Sears store a few years ago, and I haven’t checked the one up in Everett lately. Hm, might be time for another jaunt up there.

Or, I could just Make some….but sewing doll clothes is more fun!!

    1. Hi Charlotte,
I’m glad you agree with me that the second crinoline is better!!
I found my mom some fleecy ones and some stretchy velour like pj’s. I’d like a pair of them myself.
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. The seance with the crinoline is why I so like your blog: You share your experiences with having to alter things once you think they are finished. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not alone and even such an experienced and professional seamstress has the same challenges sometimes. I guess we could call ourselves perfectionists, but that might be a stretch in my case. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. Hi Susette, I just had to comment on what auto-correct obviously did with the word scene. We are having a seance with Jeanne’s crinoline? LOL I recall when someone on AGPT commented they hadn’t gotten Samantha’s gazebo together yet and it was auto-corrected to garbanzo.

    2. Hi Susette,
Sometimes it seems like I’m my own worst enemy. I’ll get something finished and then I’ll see some little thing about it that needs to be tweaked and it takes hours to fix my mistake, but I just can’t live with it the way that it was.

Oh Susette, don’t sell yourself short… you ARE a perfectionist!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I agree with Susette. I am surprised at how much thought, effort and work it takes to get something “just right” sometimes.
Good job diagnosing and correcting the problem in Addy’s crinoline. What a big improvement in the silhouette.

    1. Hi Mary,
Yes, sometimes doing the right thing….even if you have to do it a second time, is worth it!
      Thanks for your compliment!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Definitely like the second slip better. The first one seemed more Barbie like. Know Addy will appreciate how it looks with her dress. 🙂
I’d forgotten about Vermont Country Store. Thanks Charlotte. I bought a heavy fleece robe from them a number of years ago and it is still in service.

    1. Hi Joy,
Well good…it looks like making a new crinoline was the right thing to do.

Yes, Addy is twirling on my cutting table! I’m
pretty sure she likes it better!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I agree that the second one is better too. Your dresses always look so perfect because you take such care in the way the slips supports the skirts. Also makes me so glad in this day and age we can wear slacks! Just keeping all the dresses pressed and clean would take lots of time in Addy’s day.

    1. Hi Kathie,
Thank you for your kind compli!

I can’t imagine how much time it took to do laundry and cook…that must have been a full days work!
      Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, I agree the second slip will fill out the dress better.

I echo Charlotte, it is difficult for me to find pajamas that fit. They are usually too long in the leg and the sleeve. It’s funny though, after I have washed them a few times, they shrink.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
The new crinoline DOES fill out the dress better!
I hope my mom likes her new pj’s….I have to sew her name in them first…
      Thanks so much
      Blessings ,Jeanne

    2. Dorothy, I’m too short for PJs to shrink enough to fit me!! LOL However, esp. with cotton flannel, I do wash and dry them at least twice before I ever try them on and measure for shortening–saves on unpleasant surprises later one!

  7. Oh yes, that second slip is quite an improvement over the first slip, although if I had been the one doing the slip, I probably would have stayed wih the first one! You are quite the perfectionist, and I can see why you can command a good amount for the clothes you sell. It has to do with the knowledge and expertise of the seamstress! So what now happens to the first crinoline, Jeanne?

I love the way you always share your successes and failings, if you can call them failings! You are so genuine and such a sweetheart to know, and you don’t have a fake bone in your body!

    1. Hi Linda,
I’m glad everyone likes the new crinoline… as far as the first ones goes, I will probably redo the top of this one, making it shorter and for a tea length dress.
Oh my goodness, Linda, you are way too kind in your comments! Thank you for being such a nice friend!!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I like the new crinoline too. Very much. Can’t wait to see it under the dress. I too like the fact that you share your do-overs. It’s good to feel we are not alone in the rip stitches/do-over department.

My internet seems to be working better these days. I think it’s because there are fewer people in the motel at the moment. It’s a small mom and pop we’ve stayed in for years. They have a kitchenette that’s perfect for us. We stay several days so the extra room is nice, even though I don’t plan on doing any cooking. I’m on vacation!

    1. Hi Barbara,
I’ve been sewing and ripping my whole life…no need to pretend everything I do goes smoothly…it doesn’t!!
I hope you are enjoying your time in Colorado!
      Enjoy just relaxing!!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Yes, I like it better. You have a good eye, Jeanne, for being able to diagnose things and make corrections. On the pajama note, I have a hard time finding them long enough. I’m tall, and it is mostly in the legs. So most are too short for me. I usually try to find men’s pajama pants that fit and just find a tee shirt that coordinates. I can find pajamas online that are sized for talls, but they are a little pricey.

    1. Hi Carolyn,
Rebecca is tall and has long legs too so she just buys men’s pants too and a tee. Whenever she happens to find something in a tall, she’s always thrilled.
I guess everyone was in agreement with the making of a new crinoline!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. I missed the beginning of Addy’s lovely dress. That plaid is gorgeous and so perfect for fall as well as striking with Addy’s coloring. The second crinoline is beautiful. I alway love the picture of the doll lying down with that boned crinoline.
Hope you found some jammies for your mom. I’m a nightgown person myself. I just bought a couple of the ones Land’s End had on sale. The colors don’t matter as much then, because you’re sleeping. My favorite nightgown was a lovely old-fashioned one L.L. Bean had at least a decade ago. It was blue and white and made of flannel with eyelet trim. I wore it until the sleeve ripped one night.

    1. Hi Laura,
Thanks for your compliments on Addy’s newest dress. I just finished the dress and tried it on over the crinoline…it’s perfect! That’s what she said… :o)
I’m a night shirt gal…the pants always get twisted on me…
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne
