Hi everyone,
The big storm they were saying was going to hit Southern Illinois did just that! It started snowing Saturday morning and continued all through the night until Sunday afternoon. We were very fortunate to only get snow, with a layer of sleet that pelted us last night for about an hour and a half. Then more snow came this afternoon and covered up the slippery sleet layer. My hubby said we got 11-12″. He had to go outside and work on making a pathway to the chickens and also for Reuben to go _____. Well, you know… The snow was too deep for Reuben to walk in… it was up over his belly…and his back legs weren’t strong enough for him to plod through.
I am still wearing the pajamas Kristoffer got me for Christmas and didn’t really see any need to take them off since nobody would be able to make it up our driveway. (oh, I better tell you, my hubby washed my jammies, so they’ve been refreshed a couple of times) I’ve been too puny for anyone to stop by so I’ve just gone for “comfy on the couch couture!” I am still just laying around, but today I did manage to take a few pictures of my hubby outside with Reuben and a few videos of the red birds. Charlotte, the Cardinals are for YOU… since you said you don’t get them in the area of Washington where you live.
My hubby’s younger brother and some of his family live in Tennessee, and they were REALLY hit with that ice storm. David said when he opened his door, he could hear trees snapping and cracking! YIKES! He lives just outside Nashville, and they were estimating 300,000 people were without power!
So, here are a few things I captured outside my windows… (from the “inside!”)
Well, that’s what’s outside my windows… what’s outside yours?
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Your snow looks so beautiful, Jeanne! I really do miss the “real” winters we got in Michigan, but considering all the very long and very steep hills we have out here in the greater Seattle area, it’s probably just as well we don’t get much snow, nor do we get it very often. Fortunately, where I live, I can get to the library, post office, and grocery store with only very gentle slopes, not those long steep hills, so I do okay driving in whatever snow we get. However, as I get older, I’m not quite so appreciative of walking in the snow, due to the possibility of a fall.
I enjoyed seeing your pictures. I see Reuben has a nice red coat to keep him warm! And he looks like he’s standing more normally now–he really has come a long way!
Oh, thank you for the cardinal video! Yes, we don’t have cardinals out here at all. We do get Stellar’s Jays, which are a very showy deep blue (and loud and raucous to go with the showy feathers!), and I’ve seen both red-banded and yellow-banded flickers, as well as the usual robins, sparrows, juncos, etc., depending on the season. We’ve even seen a few eagles not too far from where we live–we think there might be a pair nesting in the area.
I got my grandchildren fix today! Went to my great-grandson’s 3rd birthday party. Since I had church when it first started, I was only there for the last hour, but got to spend quite a bit of time with the two youngest grandsons, Alex and Jacob, and their mom and stepdad plus his daughter (who also calls me grandma–when I first met her about 3 years ago, I gave her a choice, and that’s what she chose. 💖 very sweet girl, in 8th grade now. I got to visit briefly with Eric (A and J’s brother) and Sarah, parents of little Skyler, but of course they were busy with the party and the other guests. We’ll be getting together, just the four of us, later on this month, I think. Hope everyone else had a good Sunday, too!
Lucky YOU Charlotte to have a grand children fix. wonderful isn’t it?
Lucky grand children too. what a perfect day, that just makes me happy to think about
Looking outside ojr window, it looks the same as it does at your place, Jeanne. We too got around 11 inches, but it’s hard to tell because of the drifts of snow. It really was beautiful coming down, but everything was pretty much closed here. Nobody made it to the 9:00 mass, and only 8 people at the 11:00 mass. We watched through livestream, and stayed in! It is SO cold out! No schools are open today, and I see on the tv news that it is only -4 and steadily getting colder. No wonder that no schools here are open today!
I loved the pictures you showed us, and Reuben looks so spiffy in his red coat! The three Pomeranians who live next door had quite a time navigating the snow, since it was almost as much as they were tall! The cardinals were beautiful to see, and they show up so well in the snow.
So good to hear that you got your grandchildren fix in, Charlotte! And by the way, congratulations on the Seahawks winning the game yesterday! On to the Super Bowl!
Hi Linda – I knew what we were in for here in northeast Indiana, so I went to Mass Saturday evening at 5:00. It was over by 6:00, I visited with a few people after Mass, and when I got home at around 6:30, it was just starting to spit snow. I’ll bet not too many people made it to 9:00 Mass Sunday morning – maybe some that live in town, close to the church. We only have those two Masses, 5:00 on Saturday evening and 9:00 on Sunday morning.
Theresa, we also have a 4:30 mass on Saturday’s, but it was already snowing pretty good here, and our church is on a hill. Father said they would not clear the snow until it stopped, so we were kind of wary of what we would find after mass at 4:30. Better safe than sorry! We are not young either, both in our 80’s. Falling is not on our agenda!! Good for you that you made it to church!
I’m in Connecticut, and we ended up with a couple feet of snow, but it began sometime Sunday morning while we were attending the 7:30 AM mass. Here was the homily, in its entirety. “Thank you for coming out this morning, but it has begun to snow, and I want you all home safely, so let’s wrap this up”. Mass was about 25 minutes long, beginning to end!
Good morning dear ones.
Jeanne, isn’t that virus just unrelentingly annoying? I know you just “paddled around” the whole week-end. I did that too when I had that virus. Just awful. Do you get headaches? I did for a few days waking up with one, probably from laying flat in bed. I do not sleep well propped up.
Anyway, I love your snow pictures. You have a beautiful property. I miss my old property…. moving on. Thank you for the videos. I see Reuben, he looks so adorable and happy.
I woke up last night with a bit of a coughing fit, sinus drainage, so I am going to focus on that today, hoping I am not going to relapse.
A big pot of tea and some oranges!
Linda, you have -4º brrrrr
We are a balmy 18º,… and this morning Sunshine!!
We had snow all day yesterday, that had started Saturday evening… really nothing
overwhelming… except it was kind of “sleety” at times. I think we have 9 inches here in Northern Virginia 35 west of the Wash DC.
I saw a few neighbors out shoveling but we stayed in, I kept busy, even played a little bit of piano… stared out the window, sewed a few blocks… snuggled my kitty Princess. She is Cornish Rex and looks like a space alien, big ears and skimpy on the fur. Her great great grampa must have been a Sphynx kitty (just kiddy-ing)
Anyway, here we are, the last week of January, can you believe it?
I hope everyone has a very nice day.
Take it slow Jeanne. You are a brave sick person. As an olden nurse, I am the worst sick person, I whine and whimper all day sometimes I cry because I feel sorry for myself. Sometimes I come out with statements like “I am going to be sick forever!” My hubby is very sweet.
Yesterday afternoon, I posted a “notice” on our community resident
communication page/website.
“FREE SNOW SHOVELING CLASS
Monday only, I will be holding a FREE snow shoveling class in my driveway. Come and join the class and learn about the proper ways to shovel. Reviewed techniques will include the scoop and throw method, the down and push method (AKA the plow technique), as well as the upside down scraping technique. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to enhance your snow lifting techniques without throwing your back out! I will provide the driveway to ensure your proper training. Please bring your own shovel 😂”
I got a lot of laughs from that. haha
Although we don’t get snow here, I loved your Snow Shoveling Class post! Wouldn’t it be funny if someone actually showed up? 🙂 Better have some hot chocolate handy.
Dear Joy, you said the magic words “we don’t get snow.” I think there is going to be a caravan of us Sofa Sisters heading to your house. You may have to air out the guest room (laugh).
Oh, and just think, we can distract Other Person when it’s time for one of your capers (smile).
What a genius way to get the driveway shoveled! You sjre do have the ideas!🤣
That is great, Rosemary! Everybody was out in force this morning trying to shovel/ plow the driveways so the big plow will plow us out when they come probably tomorrow. Decades ago we all helped each other and us old time neighbors still do.
Yes, I did see a few people helping each other, and further down the street, someone had a snow blower. Hubbs and I have not lived here long enough to know how this works/connections whateverrr
All of that said…. NOT ONE SINGLE Person showed up for class at my house today! 😱😱
I was a little bit “crushed” but hubbs and I shoveled together, the top four inches were hard sleet/snow and I picked those huge chunks up and tossed them into our front yard. It was fun, there was a lot of ☀️SUN☀️ and the 🌬️wind🌬️ had not arrived yet.
Not sure how much snow we got her in northeast Indiana, probably 8″-10″. It started around 6:30 Saturday evening, and snowed all night. My husband was out all day Sunday plowing snow for people. And of course, there is the cold. Right now it is 2 degrees, but feels like -18… Husband out plowing again today.
My dog is coming home today! She is a mama dog for Journeycreek Labradoodles, a breeder about 15 minutes northeast of me, and she had her first litter of puppies (Australian Labradoodles) on December 10th. She stays with Journeycreek until pups are weaned, usually six to seven weeks. I went to visit twice, to see her and the pups, and they are just adorable! Six boys and six girls. One male almost solid black with a touch of white on the chest, nose, and tips of toes. One female that is white and chocolate that is so cute, one white and cream/tan, and the other three are light tan. Really looking forward to having Lucy home, I have really missed her!
Jeanne, I had the plugged up head and cough earlier this month. It lingered a couple of weeks, but I’m pretty much over it now. No fever, headache, or sore throat, just miserable when you can’t breathe, and can’t stop coughing. But I think you are almost over it!
Oh how wonderful to have your sweet mama doggie home sweet home. Gosh, that is great she was well loved and taken care of too.
I am happy for you.
Thank you for the lovely pictures, Jeanne, they looked great even through the window….and I am glad you DID take them from inside! Loved seeing little Reuben in his red coat, and poor George trying to make roads in the snow.
I do hope your cough is getting better and you are feeling better every day.
Oh, Charlotte, what a lovely day with grands. I miss those days when mine were little. We went to Seattle twice a year to play with them. I still have movies I took in those days.
Rosemary, I pray you are not getting sick again. I know you are going to take care.
Anne, the sweater is so pretty, the photo didn’t do it justice. Here is what Mae wanted to tell you. “Dear Miss Anne, I LOVE my sweater, you are such a good
knitter, I wish you could teach me how. Tomorrow my mom and I will go to Hobby Lobby to find some stuff to make something to go with it. I am so happy that I won it! You are such a nice lady to give it to me. Thank you so much.”
Absolutely loved seeing Jeanne’s snow. It’s beautiful! The photo out the window of Reuben and George is such a keeper. Reuben looks so spiffy in his warm jacket. And I’m sure that the cardinals at the feeder are sending their thanks to you. George will have to keep that feeder filled for the poor things.
I’m so sorry that Jeanne is still feeling the effects of whatever flu bug she has contracted. Taking way too long to get better I think. And George hasn’t gotten it? Now, that is a good thing. Hope he stays very healthy. We’ve had our flu and Covid shots so we’re hoping no bad bugs head this way. It was 34 this morning here, so I’m hoping that the plants on the porch didn’t frost as it may have gotten down lower. There was no frost warning from the weather people either. They must be napping or no longer working at the national weather service. I don’t know.
I did have to laugh about snow measured in inches. We don’t get snow here, except for a very rare occasion maybe every ten years, and it disappears quickly. But, up in the Sierras, the snow is measured in feet, not inches. We would often get a couple of feet of snow overnight and the base for skiing is also measured in feet. We would have to dig out a parking place off the road and then snowshoe into our cabin. And then, dig down about five feet to clear the way to the front door. Old times though. This year, there isn’t much snow at all. The climate is definitely changing there which is not good for the spring water run off which fills reservoirs.
We had a nice weekend and got the apple tree pruned. Yard is still awfully wet from the earlier rains, but the weeds are flourishing. Looks like we’ll have a nice day today, but we may be getting some sprinkles this week. Hope so, as we need rain.
Get well soon, Jeanne.
Dear Joy, I put a comment to you under Rosemary’s comment because I didn’t see your comment. (I know that’s a ton of “comments” – laugh).
Dear Jeanne, we got snow here in PA. I am not sure how much, probably 10 inches. I didn’t want to check because that would make me too sad just thinking about when we could be dug out. I always want it to turn 50 degrees and rain right after a big snow storm so the snow will just melt away. The sun is shining now but it’s definitely not 50 degrees. Okay, that is enough of me complaining.
Yesterday was my Dad’s birthday. He has been gone for quite some time so I hold on to the precious memories. He used to give me my allowance each week and then take me shopping for doll clothes. I don’t remember where, though, maybe it was Woolworth’s Five and Dime.
I still have 8 of my childhood dolls.
Oh, Dorothy, how wonderful you still have some of your childhood dolls! I was born in 1957, so my childhood dolls would be from the sixties, maybe considered vintage by now. 🙂 Unfortunately, because they were so well loved, they didn’t last. I remember some of them, and wish I still had them. I do have my early seventies twist-and-turn Barbie – she’s tucked away in a suitcase in the closet with some Liddle Kiddles I had. They are still in good shape since I was older when I got them. 🙂
Dear Theresa, I have a Barbie #3. As you probably know, the first four iterations of Barbie have been ranked according to value. I just checked and Barbie #1 is available on ebay for between $19,000 and $24,000. I will continue to admire her from afar and cherish my #3 (smile).
There’s a UFDC program coming up on March 17 via YouTube entitled Identifying Early Barbie Dolls. Here is the link in case you are interested.

I am glad that you still have some of your childhood dolls as well.
I loved the Liddle Kiddles so much. I do not have any old toys.
I think my mom gave a lot of our old toys away when they moved to Brussels in 1976
Nice memory Dorothy. Happy Birthday to your daddy in Heaven.
We are so fortunate to have pictures and really good memories.
Dear Rosemary, thank you for the nice words about my Father. I agree, pictures and memories help when we are missing someone.
We have 17 1/2 inches! It started after dark on Saturday night. We woke up to 10 on Saturday morning. And got the rest over the day and then Sunday. Luckily no ice. Getting down the street to my neighbor friend (widower Vietnam Vet) to check on him and the kitties there was a challenge. We’re waiting on the plows, but as we are at the very edge of town before the country we are always last. 🙂
The bird feeder and ground are full of seeds, nuts, and dried fruit for the birds and squirrels. We have tons of cardinals, blue jays, juncos, woodpeckers, Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Pine Siskins, Nuthatches, a few Wrens, and of course my favorite beloved Sparrows.
Dear Laura, oh my goodness 17 1/2 inches! I think you win the most snow award. In “doll language,” that’s almost as high as an American Girl doll. I hope the plows come soon.
I’d love to see a pic of some of the wildlife enjoying their treats. That’s great that your neighborhood helps each other out. Any hills where you are? You could take a toboggan run maybe? 🙂 Keep warm.
Snow is beautiful when you look at it in pictures. Like you Joy, we rarely get snow in Christchurch and when we do it doesn’t last long. We used to get it more often than we have in the last 15 years. When dad bought this house, on our second viewing there was about 8 inches of snow and that was in early September which is equivalent to March in your hemisphere. We haven’t had any snow for about 5 years now.
Jeanne, I loved your photos and it is wonderful that Reuben is back on all four feet. Take care of yourself and keep yourself warm, I hope the cough goes soon.
They are still trying to recover the bodies of the people buried in the landslide. There were six altogether. I think some heads might roll, the police and the council were warned that the mountain was showing cracks about 4 hours before the slip came down and no one ordered an evacuation.
At least the rain has stopped for now. Summer is set to return by the end of the week, and the kids go back to school next week. Figures.
Try to stay warm everyone
Anne, I wrote a note for you up higher where my note is. My Mae wrote you a note about the sweater. Please check it out.
Looking out my front door it looks normal. But stepping outside is a different story. Right now it’s somewhere in the 20s and will be near that for the next few days – I think one night drops into the teens. Fortunately we had little in the way of precipitation and none when the temps dropped to below freezing. I haven’t talked to Sean yet so I don’t know what it was like where he lives near Houston. David has been going back and forth to the shop and told me it had been pretty breezy but seems to have slowed down. I’ve stayed inside so I’ll take his word for it.
Church was closed yesterday due to the threat of icy roads. I saw where our former church was closed also so they could turn off the water. They have a lot of problems when we have difficult weather so they were playing it safe. Since we had no online service we were sent the readings, etc., for a morning prayer service but we do miss the communion service when we can’t make it to church.
I still have my Christmas tree and village up. I may just keep them up all year and not have to do it again next year. Well maybe not. I just haven’t had the inclination to take everything down yet. Maybe I’ll pretend I live in Helen, GA, where they keep Christmas decorations up till the end of January. Thanks Sissy for telling me I’m not the only one.
Charlotte aren’t grandchildren fixes great?! I don’t see mine as often these days since Skyy and Jaiden are back in regular school so don’t come out here every now and then to do their studies and we don’t meet up for lunch on Sunday as we used to since they only have one wage earner at the moment. But in a last splurge before we sell off our last bit of farm property and lose the income from the products I decided to do something we have all wanted to do for ages but just didn’t feel we could afford it. David and I are taking Sean, Dionne and the grandkids to see “Shen Yun”. The school district in Cypress has a wonderful performing arts center and we will go there so we don’t have to go into downtown Houston which is horrible for getting to the venues if you have any kind of mobility issues. If I need it I can be dropped off at the door before parking the car.
Oh, I’ve seen a similar performance here a few years ago and it was fabulous. I’m sure that everyone will really enjoy it. What a great idea.
“Shen Yun” is very good. I took my parents to the performance at the Kennedy Center about 8 years ago!
