A few more wintery pictures…

Hi everyone,
Well, here’s a bit of good news… I laid down to take a nap today and I actually fell asleep without my head being propped up on 2 pillows. I don’t think I coughed any during the time I was laying there. It’s the first time in 12 days I haven’t coughed my head off when laying down. Yay…maybe things are taking a turn. I certainly hope so.

It looked like Laura was the big winner with the most snow accumulated…17 1/2″!

Rosemary, I’m sorry to read you didn’t get any takers on your snow shoveling class! I bet people were watching your house to see if anyone DID happen to show up. It’s too bad you didn’t have a bunch of friends who could have shown up and you could have pretended to be giving them lessons. I bet you would have been the talk of the neighborhood!

It’s super cold out tonight here in Southern Illinois… 11 degrees and the wind chill is -5. My poor hubby was busy again today working outside creating paths between the house and the chicken coop and the garage and a place for Rueben to _____… you know what!

I have a few more pictures of the sun shining on the snow, but that didn’t make it any warmer… My pictures were too big according to when I was trying to load them. I waited and waited to see if they went through, but I have to go to bed… so I’m hoping they come through during the night… I need to talk to Kristoffer about how to reduce them when they are 10-15 MB big!

Okay, that’s all from me… so you can chat with each other now… about whatever you like…

BUT, be sure and come back tomorrow… JOY has some wonderful pictures to share… Remember she was working on a setup for her dolls? Well, it looks like she got everything put together and there are LOTS of things to look at!

Night everyone,
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Well, we are starting to warm up just a tiny bit out here in the Seattle area. We’ve had several nights in a row where the temps have gone down into the 20s (unusual for us), and then no higher than 45 during the day. We have also had 13 days in a row with NO rain! That’s the third-longest dry stretch for the month of January in Seattle. However, rain is due starting Tuesday night.

I have to say, I’m a little envious of the snow, since I do love snow–but not sure I would be too fond of the minus temperatures! I know, I’ve gotten soft. After all, I’m a Yooper!! (I grew up in the U.P., or Upper Peninsula of Michigan.) Plus out here we have really long and terribly steep hills, that become extremely difficult (if not impossible) to navigate in the snow, so I guess it’s just as well we don’t get snow very often. At least where I live, we just have very gentle slopes between my house and the post office, library, and grocery store, so I’m good in that respect. It doesn’t bother me to drive in snow, either, but I would never attempt to drive in white-out conditions (which we rarely see here).

Linda, you mentioned the Seahawks win….I am probably one of the few people in this state that does not give a rip about football!! 😂🤣😂 My son watched the game with some friends, though, and he was pretty happy. I figured they must have won because I heard a few fireworks go off.

Tomorrow (that is, Tuesday–I’m still up so it’s still Monday!) I’m going down to my brother’s house for lutefisk for my early birthday lunch. They thought that, since this is one of those “big” birthdays, they should do something special for me. It’s been several years since I last had lutefisk (also at their house) and I’m really looking forward to it! I grew up on lutefisk, and if it’s fixed right, it’s just wonderful! And they do fix it right!

    1. Charlotte, my husbands sister is a Yooper (his whole family is from Mason though… that is where he grew up) Margaret is on her own now. She is 76 I think, and on her own. Her husband Jim died suddenly about 2 years ago. Super sad. My hubbs, Rex, helps her a lot via phone call. She is such a wonderful sister in law. I adore her.
Yoopers are the best! Happy Birthday celebration. I hope your Lutefisk is made perfectly and yummy

Charlotte, I have a friend who lives in Seattle, and she is very excited! I do like football, but baseball is actually my favorite. I feel about basketball the way you do about football! Could not care less!

  2. Hi Jeanne, I was wondering about Reuben and how he is doing. It looked like in your pictures yesterday he is able to walk now? I sure hope so. Glad you are on the uphill to recovering. Karen

  3. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Oh, Jeanne, I hope you had a night without coughing as well. You are such a busy person normally it is hard to think of you being this way so long. Hoping for your getting better every day.

No snow here, thank goodness, but the temp did go down to the 20’s last night. It is supposed to come up to the 40’s later, and down to the 30’s tonight.
We are headed to the YMCA, then groceries and off to Hobby Lobby to find some thing to go with Mae’s lovely sweater.

Anne, I do hope you saw her little note of thanks yesterday.

  4. Marilyn in Colorado

It’s 4:50 and 35 degrees here. It was supposed to warm up and it has.

My BIG news is that the sweater from Anne in NZ has arrive. In Georgette Heyer language, it’s not just in the common way. It’s white and nicely textured — Anne can tell us the stitch. There’s a double stripe around the chest and sleeves just below the armscye. The top stripe is red, the lower one blue, and the buttons are red and easy to fasten. There’s a hood trimmed in yarn that has an almost fur-like look. The trim is white and has a slight sparkle, the way the sun sparkles on powder snow. The sweater fits perfectly. Kit is wearing it so that the hood is displayed nicely — her short hair doesn’t get in the way. I’ve been updating her wardrobe — she continues to have her own independent character and unfussy style but has moved into this century. The sweater is exactly right for her.

Many thanks, Anne. This is perfect in style and timing.

    1. Oh, I would absolutely love to see Kit, wearing that special sweater from Anne. Your description is wonderful, and I’ll bet it is lovely. Maybe you can send Jeanne a pic? 🙂

  5. Linda in St. Louis

Oh, yes, such lovely snow pictures, Jeanne! I hope things are improving with you and that you are feeling like your “old” self again soon!

Today Michael and I are attempting to get out of the house and shovel the driveway. It is a balmy 18 degrees as I write this and we are so excited to have weather in the 20’s today, almost to 30! Schools here are still mostly out but having online classes, since it is still very cold and then too the buses are another thing. My school district has over 100 buses and they all have to be cleared off and running, so that takes time. I think tomorrow will be better and a lot of schools here will reopen.

So glad to hear about Marilyn’s sweater arriving, and it sounds darling! I’m looking forward to seeing what Sissy gets for accompanying Mae’s new sweater made by Anne.

Enjoy your lunch, Charlotte! What. Is lutefish? Is that a Scandinavian dish?

      1. Linda in St. Louis

Don’t worry, Joy, we do it in half hour blocks of time and the. Come in for a bit. The fro t of the house faces the south, and the sun is shining, so it will be fine. We are in no rush, just taking our time,a nd the snow is light and fluffy.

  6. Good morning dear ones.
Jeanne, I am so happy to hear this improvement. I hope it holds on.
If you are not taking the expectorant or DM, think about taking a dose daily, around 10AM, to get that drainage out. For myself, it was stubborn. Please just stay ahead of it. Honestly, having a virus/head cold, what ever this is, is exhausting and tiresome. I am really happy the coughing is over.
George did an excellent job on the shoveling. I am a perfectionist and this is what my shoveling looks like too. haha haha Well done George. I am so glad you are dug out for Reuben and the chickens.

I do not think I over did it yesterday with all of my enthusiastic shoveling with hubbs. It was good for both of us, as we had gotten kind of lazy after our exhausting self moving via Acura rdx with seats folded down over Summer.

Ladies, I am excited to see the fashionable results made with Anne’s custom sweaters. Aren’t we just the luckiest to be living in a time with internets and sharing photos.
I hope everyone enjoys bright sunshine today, it is uplifting!
Oh, and I had some very sweet happy “responses” to my class announcement.
No, no one showed up. Yes, I would have made hot chocolate.

  7. Joy in northern CA

Oh Jeanne, what a Christmas card kind of photo. Absolutely loved seeing your snow and the beautiful setting in the yard. Do you have twinkle lights on the gazebo? I’ll bet it is lovely at night too. And George’s path work sparkles as well. Now, that is how a path should look. Good work George and Reuben. I’m so very glad that Jeanne was able to get some undisturbed rest yesterday. Hopefully, this is a turn for the better for her. I am so glad that Jeanne is on the mend and can get back to her favorite craft and sewing soon.
We’re heading down to take the Honda in to the dealership this morning. Of course, then, we’ll have to go back down later in traffic to pick it up this afternoon. Oh well, I’ll be glad that it is done. Humm, maybe I can talk other person into stopping at Michael’s on the way back. We’ll see. 🙂
Glad that those in snow country are digging out. Take care.

    1. Joy in northern CA

I had to look up how to prepare Lutefisk. It’s made with lye, if you can believe. Interesting, Charlotte, but I don’t like peas either. 🙂

      1. Thank you so much for posting this video! My grandfather on my father’s side was born and raised in Norway. He immigrated to America by himself sometime around 1890 when he was 16. I remember having a variation of Norwegian pancakes when I was a child and I absolutely love Norwegian brown cheese (unfortunately I can no longer eat it as anything made with any kind of animal milk doesn’t agree with me anymore). I’ve never had lutefisk, but now I want try it.

  8. Barbara in SE Texas

Oh, Jeanne. I love your snow pictures. I thought we might get a little here there was so much precipitation predicted and so many low temps expected but we were in the “dry” zone once the temps dropped. Everything here was closed but probably needlessly. But we went to lunch yesterday at our favorite Mexican restaurant and were surprised to see it nearly empty. It’s usually packed. Guess people didn’t want to brave the cold. Probably native Texans. When David and I (both from places that have cold winters) are just becoming comfortable wearing light jackets or just long-sleeved shirts, most of our neighbors are out and about wearing parkas and mukluks. I’ve read it takes about three generations to acclimate to a different climate and most of the people around here go back five or six generations. They do fine in the heat of the summer but once the temps drop they aren’t happy. What really amuses us is that our church congregation is about half Nigerian and when it’s cold most of them don’t come to church.

I’m so glad to hear you are doing better, Jeanne. At least the coughing has stopped or at least slowed down. And it does look like Reuben is on his own wearing his adorable red coat. Hope that is true. Congrats to George on his snow shoveling. I remember one year when I lived in Delaware we had a huge snowstorm (unusual for us). I was about 20 at the time. I told my mother I would do the snow shoveling. I ended up with what my mother, a nurse, referred to as a cold in my back muscles. It was awful and lasted weeks. I functioned with the help of some great pain medicine my grandfather used for his Bursitis. You can’t get it anymore. It was replaced with the more habit-forming pain killers. It’s a shame because I took that for weeks, but it wasn’t habit forming. As the weeks went on I could tell I was getting better because I was using it less and less. Thankfully I haven’t had that since.

Lutefisk, I read of that in an article once. The article made it sound horrible like it was some gelatinous mass only someone raised on it could stand to eat. I think it was the lye part that really got me more than the gelatinous mass. I looked it up again and it actually looks fine. I’d be willing to give it a try.

David said it was 27 when he got up this morning but I think it dropped to 22 during the night. I think we have another night or two of freezing temps ahead and then it’s supposed to warm up some. If it’s going to be cold I want to look forward to snow. If no snow, it might as well be warm.

  9. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, I am so happy that you are doing better. Don’t rush things though. Continue to take it easy for a day or two.

  10. Jeannie, I’m so glad you sound like you’re on the mend and that you’ve also had time to really rest and sleep. That’s the best you can do for yourself.
I love the snow pictures and especially seeing little Reuben out in the one the other day.
I’ve been absent for various health reasons, but I’m on the mend and I’m getting good help. I cannot wait to get this cast off my arm. It has been the most aggravating thing ever and even though I know I need it, I feel like it’s crushing my bones. And it’s making me feel claustrophobic.

I also missed commenting on Linda’s wonderful doll pictures. I always love seeing them and I realize that it’s a lot of work dressing them but Linda, you do a very good job with your girls and the backgrounds and all of your wonderful accessories.

I hope those who are in the states that had a lot of snow are OK and not having to go out much, but I truly miss the snow back in Ohio.
I’m sure there’s other things I wanted to comment on because I’ve missed reading and commenting on Jeanne’s blog last couple of days.
***I just remembered that I hope that whoever ever had the sweater from Anne for her Kit doll, it would be wonderful to see it.

  11. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

Sissy, I did see Mae’s thank you note and tell her it was a pleasure. I am sorry I didn’t comment yesterday.
Marilyn I am so relieved you received the sweater. I was beginning to worry since it arrived in the States on 14th Jan. The stitch is just garter stitch which is just every row knit. The ‘fur’ is ‘Flurry’, an eyelash yarn which people used to make scarves, It is REALLY hard to knit with, impossible to see if you have dropped a stitch (which is very easy to do with this yarn). I have knitted sweaters for the girls with it, when they were little but I always knitted 4 rows eyelash, 4 rows stocking stitch which was much more comfortable to wear. They don’t make it anymore but I have quite a lot left so keep it for trimming. The pattern I got from the Internet a few years ago from ‘Allfree’ Knitting. I don’t know if they are still going. I have several patterns for 18″ dolls. Some of the outfits I gave to my granddaughter in Australia (when she was about 9) and I did sell some here for $29NZ which is about $17.50 in USD! I’m not sure if I sent the photos to Jeanne or not. I will send them again and she might remember.
Jeanne, I am so glad that you’re getting a little better, or at least you seem to be. Your photos look lovely but I am not a fan of snow. I love the look, just not the feel! In Christchurch these days, if you want to see the snow you get in your car and drive to it, (with chains on your tyres). If you don’t want to see it, you stay home lol. Make sure you stay warm and get well soon.
Joy, I am looking forward to seeing your photos tomorrow. Thank you for sharing the video of Lutefisk it was very interesting. I’ll pass on the mustard though. I am not a fan of mushy peas in Yorkshire (UK), they use the marrowfat peas, but these mushy peas look quite nice. I can’t imagine using lye though, it sounds dangerous to me.
Next week (6th Feb) it is Waitangi Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The Treaty hasn’t always been honoured but these days Maori are much more vocal and much more united. Originally there were two documents, one in Maori and one in English and the English version was slightly different, giving the colonisers more rights than Maori intended but now the Maori version is considered to be the official version and successive governments have had to right a lot of wrongs over the years.
Summer has returned; it was a lovely blue sky when I got up this morning. Let’s hope it lasts for a while, I am fed up with drying washing inside.
Have a lovely day everyone and stay warm

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Anne, please send us some blue sky photographs. I am weary of seeing snow outside of my window (smile).

      1. Barbara in SE Texas

Dorothy you need to become a snow bird and come to Texas for the winter. We actually have some very nice RV parks in the area and one is in town near me. You could leave in time to be home for Maypril.
