Treasures from my shopping trip with Cindy…

Hi everyone,
Sorry it’s been so long since I have been “with” you like I have wanted to be. Our lives have been sort of upside down and so filled each day with things to do but I’m trying my best to get caught up. I HAVE to… because Rebecca and Karn are wanting to come home this weekend. EEK!

I thought I’d show you some pictures from the past week or two…

In no particular order… my hubby had 3 doctor appointments in St. Louis last week and we had to make 2 trips for them. One of the days we went, it was SO rainy, and as we drove by the St. Louis Arch, it was only “half” there… because of the fog…

Here is my “annual” Amaryllis, brought to me from my sweet sister, Cindy!

One day, Cindy and I went shopping by ourselves and hit four fun Antique shops… I liked this one called Southern Estates Antique Mall, because I found something I’ve been looking for, for Mae. I’ve been wanting a chair for her to sit in that was sort of oversized and chunky -like. It was actually a lamp, and had a shade, but I told them they could keep the shade, as I was only interested in the chair part.
Now, it will need some work… my hubby is going to remove the brass rode in the middle and maybe put in another dowel rod where it was.

It kind of has an elongated seat to it and would have been absolutely perfect if it had been just slightly less deep than it is, but I liked it and got it…

I may paint it when I get it just the way I want it…

Mae told me it was just perfect and she climbed right in it… in just her undies…

In that same booth, I saw these blue mason jars filled with dried flowers and thought it would look nice in my kitchen window… I forgot to take the picture of it when it was still daylight, but here is the “night time” version… It’s really nice in my kitchen.

I’ll try and take a picture of it during the daylight hours so you can see it without the reflection…

Cindy spotted a booth with fabric… oh dear! I was in trouble. They had pieces rolled in 3 yard, 1 yard and half yard pieces. I picked up a few that were small prints… well, mostly small…

I’ve had this print before, but had used it all up…

This was a small plaid homespun cotton fabric and thought it would be great for the Fourth of July…

I don’t think this was Dimity, but it was very sheer and delicate and more colorful than my picture looks.

This was one that could be used for just about any doll…at Christmas or maybe even Valentine’s Day.

This tiny print was the first one I picked out. It is very thin cotton and is so sweet… It will make beautiful Spring dresses!

I forgot to take a close up picture of the red plaid, but it was a really small plaid and had such crisp colors. It’s a woven plaid, which I like the best.

Here is a short video of Reuben today, outside with my hubby, still not able to stand, but wiggling in the grass, trying to ….sorry… poop… he did, eventually!

Well, that’s it for today… I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, I’m so glad Rebecca and Karn will be home this weekend, Jeanne; I think you both really need to have them with you right now, and I know Reuben will be over the moon to see his “sister” again!

We’ve had a lot of wet weather of late, too, and last week we had a day that looked just like what you showed in your first picture. Today it was misty rain, but not so foggy.

Another Amaryllis! What color flower will this one have, I wonder? If I recall, they do come in different colors.

That chair/lamp is going to work beautifully for Mae! I can see she is already pleased as punch to have something just for her!

You have the perfect spot for those blue jars! Did they come with the wire carrier? It looks like they belong together!

And your fabrics…I spotted that blue/yellow floral right off, your favorite print. So nice you found a little more of it! Of the others: the homespun plaid I can see on Molly, or perhaps Kirsten. The next one is not dimity, I’m pretty sure–dimity has a closer weave than that–but might be called a shadow stripe, since the woven pattern forms stripes, which can be seen under the print. The other two prints are just darling, and Gigi thinks the one with blue flowers might be just the right scale for a dress for her! (That girl! She’s going to need her own closet pretty soon! 🙄😂) The red plaid will be perfect for Christmas dresses!

Linda, yesterday you mentioned a Polly Flinders dress. I have a small collection of vintage baby dresses, and at least one of them is a Polly Flinders dress. I vaguely remember seeing that brand as a child, although I rather doubt I ever wore one. I’m not sure about that, thought.

Rosemary, you talked about Gabapentin for Reuben, and Jeanne, I’m glad you got some for him. It’s a medication that is also approved for humans, and Ron took it for years; it made a huge difference in his pain level when he was walking. He was absolutely stunned with how fast it worked for him. I saw the video you posted, Jeanne, and it looks like he’s trying so hard to get up!! His spunk is still there!

Paula, I like puzzles, too! Are you talking about jigsaw puzzles or pencil puzzles? I like both!

  2. Linda in St. Louis

Lots to comment on today! First the arch! Yes, that’s what the weather has been looking like here, and today it will be chilly, wind gusts around 35 mph, and cold! Silly me, I will be outside trying to get the leaves away from the house, so It won’t look too crazy with Christmas decorations up, which will happen soon! And snow supposedly coming Saturday! Brrr!

Oh, Mae looks too cute in her new chair! I can’t wait to see how you finish it for her! It looks like it will be sturdy enough for her with the legs splayed out, and II’m sure she is glad to be able to sit down and pose with her little girl impishness! You could even make a little cushion for it!

You have to be kidding me about that metal basket with the bottles and flowers! I have the exact same thing sitting on my kitchen windowsill, above my faucet! I do change it out at different times of the year, and put different colored flowers in it, but I got the whole thing at Pier One when they were open. Mine has clear glass bottles, so I put different colored flowers in mine, but what a coincidence! It is the perfect width for my windowsill, which is only a few inches wide, so I have trouble finding the right things to put there. This fits the bill!

I absolutely love your fabric that you showed us! That blue one that you used to have is beautiful! And that green and white one with the tiny red flowers, oh my! I remember seeing a dress made for Christmas on EBay for Betsy McCall or a small doll like that. It was basically white with green vines in an all over pattern and was SO pretty! Most of the time you see just red, red, red for Christmas dresses, so this one really stood out. I can’t remember it exactly, but it also had green piping somewhere on the dress, and I wanted it so badly, but was outbid. I even bought green sparkly shoes for her to wear it with, and then lost out.

Charlotte, the Polly Flinders dresses that I was familiar with, were for my daughter, who I suspect is younger than you might be. And the fact you had no daughters, you probably didn’t notice them as much. As for Polly Flinders dresses when I was a child, I have no idea about them! That was a LONG time ago!

It was so good to that Reuben still has some “spunk” in him, and I am sure he wonders “what the heck is going on with my legs!” He will be thrilled to see Rebecca, and I am sure you will too!

    1. Charlotte Trayer

I imagine your daughter IS younger than I am, Linda–I will be 80 on my next birthday! I find that rather shocking!! How did I get That old?!! 😂 I remember when my grandmas were in their 80s and they were positively ancient!! 😂🤣😂

  3. First off, Reuben. He looks so happy!! My goodness, that adorable little pup, I want to give him kisses. Maybe he needs one of those doggie wheel extensions for his back end. He does not look like he is in any pain.
Both of you are doing a wonderful nursing endeavor, I really hope he makes a miraculous recovery.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving gathering with your kiddos, Jeanne.
It will be a good day to be together.
Here, I am making a ham and bringing mac and cheese. It will be just me and hubbs traveling to Maryland (about an hour) to visit my sister.
My oldest daughter and her family drove down from Richmond Virginia to North Carolina some area on the east coast where her hubbs parents just got a new house.,
My younger daughter lives 30 minutes away from us, we never hear from her because she married a controlling guy. they have 4 kids we have not seen in 3 years. …. Yeah, it is weird. It is sad too.

Jeanne, the treasures you rescued are delightful. I love the blue jars, and I also love the fabric, of course.
Today (as reported on USPS tracking) I am getting three more yards of Tilda soft teal for my quilt extension. I already un sewed the portions so the add on will be easy.
We have drab weather today with a bit of a sprinkle. I think tomorrow is supposed to be dry and not cold or windy, good for travel.
Enjoy your day with beloved friends and family
    Love, Rosemary

How fun today to see the travel log. Having never visited St. Louis, or even seen the arch in person, the half arch was delightful! 🙂

Mae’s “new” chair is a kick. I’ve never experienced a chair/lamp before. To make it simple, just cutting off the metal rod and giving it a coat of paint would make it perfect. Not a fan of chipped off shabby chic here. And a sweet little pillow to prop behind Mae would be cute too. Looks like an easy project. Well, maybe.
I’d love to see a pic of the jar display rack. Now, that is something I could definitely use around here. It does look sweet with the blue mason jars too. We have boxes of old mason and other vintage brand jars from other person’s parents. It would be wonderful to have a holder like that to display a few. As to the fabric, wow! So many very cute prints. The first thing I noticed was that blue flowered of which Jeanne, has made some great outfits in the past. Hope spring comes early this year so that we can see some of the latest fabric again in dolly dress form.

Has Reuben, improved any? Sad to see him struggling, but so happy that Rebecca, will arrive soon. Maybe that will make his tail wag again. And seeing Rosemary’s idea of one of those back leg wheelchairs for him is another great idea. I’ll bet he would be zooming around all over the place.

I just read Linda’s, post and found my answer. An old Pier One basket for milk bottles, I would guess. And how interesting that both Linda and Jeanne, have the same on the shelf above the sink. Great minds think alike. 🙂

Have to get flying and put on my apron, maybe, as I’m cooking today. Hope that everyone has a wonderful turkey day with family and friends.

  5. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

    Dear friends,
I have been reading, and now hope to be back. The two messed up things are fixed, I had to set so long to get someone to talk to me on one and finally figured out how to fix the other to resend it.

Rosemary, I am so glad you are feeling better. It would be sad if you couldn’t taste the Thanksgiving goodies! Again, I am so sorry for your daughter and family. At least I did get to go to WA for many visits when they were little. They were so loving and fun then. Now that they are grown up, I never hear from them. I just put the oldest one’s birthday card in the mail for her 32 birthday.

Joy, I always love readying your doll capers. I have often wondered why you call your hubs “other person”. Can you tell us why? I guess you are cooking today as am I.

Barbara, I would love to see your village, and it would be very difficult to animate it, but what fun!!

Ingrid, dear, I am so sorry for your loss. I two have lost my parents, but it was even harder to loose them both so quickly. You are in my prayers.

Charlotte, I take gabapentin one a day and one at night for my back and nerve pain in my legs. It really works and I sleep really well.

Anne, I loved your sweaters! I have knitted some but nothing like yours. They are very special! Also your lovely clematis. Thank you so much for sharing.

Marilyn, Thank you for the info on Aron sweaters. You are so good and finding interesting things.

Jeanne, loved the video of little Reuben, he was really trying to move. He does seem to be doing better!!! Your fabric is lovely, it will be so nice to see sewing it when you have time again. Also the lamp that is such a cute chair for Mae. I wish I could go shopping with you and Cindy!

Wishing all of you a enjoyable Thanksgiving! I am still cooking, starting yesterday. Since our turkey will be bought cooked, my brother is bringing it, I am making the gravy using turkey necks. They are cooking now. My grandmother always said that the necks are the best meat on the turkey, LOL! The meat will take the place of giblets in the gravy. Also finishing my oyster dressing and will make my Bourbon Pecan pie. Tomorrow will see the mashed potatoes and green beans. I have already made my cranberries with fruit, it is all chopped up up, oranges, apples, and crushed pineapple. Two friends who live alone are coming with other food too. So much for my diet!!

    1. Barbara in SE Texas

Sounds like you have a wonderful Thanksgiving meal planned. The Bourbon Pecan pie sounds delicious and the cranberries with fruit is something I know I would love.

      1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

The fruit thing is easy, Barbara. You need a Cuisine Art,
2 oranges, 2 apples, 1 pound cranberries, 1 can crushed pineapple, 1 1/2 cup sugar, to taste. Leave peal on the fruits and cut them in chunks to use in the Cuisine Art. Chop all of the fruits and the berries and put in a large bowl. Add Pineapple and sugar and stir well. I add a can of canned berries that has the berries in it, it just adds more red to it. Keep in fringe and it lasts a long time and it delicious with most kinds of meat, makes great turkey sandwich. It does make a LOT so I share about of 1/3 of it with a friend who LOVES it. Let me know if you try it.

    2. Charlotte Trayer

Sissy, I used to love to eat chicken and turkey necks, also the gizzard and the heart! Didn’t care much for the liver, however. But it’s been years and years since I had a whole chicken or turkey–usually I’ll buy the boneless skinless breasts (chicken) or a whole turkey breast, and sometimes I’ll just buy chicken wings–my favorite of all! But this year I was given a whole turkey so I’m sure there will be that little bag of giblets and the neck inside! We’ll see if I do anything with them. Depends on how ambitious I’m feeling!

  6. Barbara in SE Texas

Doesn’t look like Reuben is giving up anytime soon so there is definitely hope for some degree of recovery for him. I’m sure seeing Rebecca will be great for his recovery. Your vet said he is not in pain so that’s not keeping him from moving his back legs. Once before David and I were married he had a serious problem. The doctors thought it was some kind of degenerative disease since he could not move his legs. He was in the hospital and getting therapy and one day they wheeled him past the whirlpool area. He asked if he could use it. They said it probably won’t help but why not. He walked out. Turns out it was a pinched nerve in his back and evidently his body had shut down his legs for fear of pain.

I will keep Gabapentin in mind in case my new bed doesn’t totally alleviate my pain when walking. When I take something that stops the pain I move just fine but haven’t found anything that works all the time. The best thing I’ve tried is actually Excedrin Migraine. It has aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine. The combination seems to work better than just aspirin or Tylenol. Believe me I’ve tried them all. Even Tylenol with codeine that usually works great for me doesn’t help with this.

I always get tingly all over when I look at lovely fabrics. Truly an addiction I have no desire to cure. I love all the fabrics. Is the blue the fabric that you also have/had in pink and yellow or is it something totally different? I love the tiny prints in some of the fabric and the one you mentioned for Christmas or Valentine’s Day is especially nice. I always love plaids and you have some nice ones here.

Do you know what color the Amaryllis is or will that be a surprise?

Love Mae’s new chair. For her it is like a chaise longue. It definitely needs painting. I’m with Joy on the shabby chic thing. I had a friend who was totally into that idea and I never could figure out why other than she usually followed the crowd and that was the big thing at the time.

I love the Mason jars with the dried flowers and the wire basket for them. How funny that Jeanne and Linda both have the same thing. My mother, sisters and I often bought the same things (products) and we didn’t know it until I visited. Since we didn’t live close, we were unaware we had the same taste in so many things.

Well so much for me getting my windows pressure washed yesterday. Skyy got half the job done when suddenly water started spraying out of the bottom of the pressure washer. Evidently a seal had broken so that job was put paid to for a while. At least he got the windows on the front of the house and the garage doors done. The back can wait but I hope not too long. Sean said he’s been wanting to get a new pressure washer because he’s had this one a long time but the next time I can snag Skyy will be during Christmas holiday from school and the weather during that time can be many different things and most of them not conducive to cleaning windows.

Wishing all my Sofa Sisters and Jeanne (who I consider one of my Sofa Sisters) an absolutely wonderful Thanksgiving Day. Wish I could share in the leftovers. So much sounds so yummy.

  7. Lots of different things today.
I’m happy to see Reuben seems to be happy rolling in the grass. It’s wonderful that Rebecca and Karn are coming. Reuben will be delighted.
Mae is pleased with her new chair. Yes, it does need some paint. Definitely not a fan of shabby chic here. The blue jars are so pretty. I have some as well though not the holder.
Very lovely fabrics to add to your stash.
Wishing Jeanne and all my other Sofa Sisters blessings and a very Happy Thanksgiving. Time to go make the piecrust and bake the pumpkin pie. Also have to dry the bread for my grandmother’s dressing. Yum!

    Hi all
Jeanne Loved everything you got from the thrift shop. I loved the mason jars, I reckon Kai would too. I’m not sure I told you but Kai says her 16 yr old self was stupid! When they first moved in I emptied my china cabinet and gave away the ‘trios’ and teasets I had because everyone thought they were old fashioned and nobody wanted them. I gave them to a little cafe that was just starting up and he served morning and afternoon teas in them. Now Kai is buying stuff like that from thrift stores! She is also disappointed (now) that the sleepouts are so boring she wishes she had the pretty one with the veranda THAT SAM AND I WANTED AND SHE (at 16) HATED. Go figure.
It is Thursday morning here, so Thanksgiving for you. We don’t celebrate it here of course, our big family get togethers usually happen at Christmas which for us is in the middle of Summer. I had hoped we could go to Russell’s this year since it will only be Sam and I but he has decided that it would be better at my place! We will go to my other son’s for breakfast. I won’t be doing all the bells and whistles this year. We’ll probably have cold chicken and ham, maybe new potatoes and salad. I guess we’ll have a pavlova and fruit salad for dessert, very Kiwi. I will have to make fruit mince pies and shortbread. I usually take some for Darren and family and some for Russell as well so I make at least 4 dozen mince pies.
We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but, hey, anything to make a buck! we have had Black Friday sales for the last two weeks! Nobody knows what Black Friday is of course!
I’m with everyone else, I love the little chair but why do people carefully paint things then sandpaper half the paint off? Definitely not my cup of tea. Mae certainly loves it and it is perfect for her.
I have to go, got a busy day today the kids are off to Australia for a month. Unfortunately, Kai is the only one of the three who is really helpful so I will miss her! Jono rarely leaves his room so nothing much will change there and Asher will still be here. She had wanted to go but her school attendance had to improve for that to happen and it got worse not better so she has to stay here.
    Have a wonderful day tomorrow

    1. Joy in northern CA

Just wanted to let you know that I just finished peeling five “Kiwis”. Going into the fruit platter I’m bringing tomorrow as well as a couple of other sides.
