The Ruby Red Fashion Friend girls wanted their turn…

Hi everyone,
The girls in the dolly cabinet were spying on the boys who were modeling their new board shorts in front of the new beach scene. They, in no uncertain terms, let me know they wanted to try on the new swimsuits I had made, and stand in front of it too! So, being the good mom I am, I decided to let them. They crowded into one picture at first, but then they did some “doubles” pictures with me. I hope you enjoy seeing them… It had been so long since I made the girls swimsuits, I had almost forgotten how… but it came back to me. :o)

Wanna see?

Stella, Freida, Rozen and Lavender are today’s swimsuit models. I think they look so cute… must be Spring Break! :o)

Stella and Freida teamed up to show you the first two suits… Stella’s is a pretty sparkly and Freida’s is pretty psychedelic!!!

Then Rozen and Lavender teamed up showing off their swimsuits…

Rozen’s purple and silver dotted suit and Lavender’s dark pink with silver splotches are really eyecatching… moreso in person!

I have quite a few more cut out and LOTS still to be cut out, but I’ll move to another doll very soon!

Thanks everyone,
Blessings, Jeanne

First of all, Anne, I replied to your question on my post yesterday.

Second, I got an email from Dorothy this morning, too! I just haven’t been on the computer until a little while ago. She said she will be back on the sofa soon, and may have a May Day poem for us by then. (And she said that Charlotte Noelle has been quiet lately–which is scary! LOL I suggested she might check to see what she’s doing!)

Jeanne, the girls look so cute in their swimsuits. And that background is working out really well for them!

I was reading everyone’s comments on yesterday’s blog, and want to chime in on the smoking thing. My parents never smoked, nor did some of my aunts and uncles (although a few did). When I was about 13, my Aunt Linnea (who was a bigger lady, and had 5 children) informed me that if she Ever caught me with a cigarette in my mouth, “so help me, I’ll wallop you one!” I figured, if anyone could do it, she could, and it wasn’t worth the pain of trying! So I never did. My brother smoked for a while (severe asthmatic, too–how smart is that?!) but quit after his first child was born, I think.

Well, I have pulled two more quilt UFOs to finish. One is a finished top (as the other two were) and needs to be layered, quilted, then bound; the other is set of blocks which need to be assembled. Stay tuned!

    1. Smoking was “a thing” and the advertisers knew how to sell it.
Smoking tobacco is addictive and there is nothing good about it!
Charlotte, you are really making progress and all of you able to put some focus on finishing is very impressive. I am inspired!

Thank you, Rosemary. I think for a while the “widow’s brain fog” enveloped me, and I only did smaller projects or hand embroidery ro something like that. Now i’m enjoying a renewed energy and sense of purpose in getting things finished!

Charlotte, my Dad (not to be confused with my birth father) never smoked, He was given a cigarette ration during the war and used to give them away for ‘favours’ from the other men. He lived to 96. neither I nor my brother or sister smoked. Dad used to tell us that “Anyone can smoke, it makes you better than them if you don’t.” Whether it was a good way to teach us I don’t know, probably not PC now but it worked. My eldest (Rob) didn’t start till he went to Singapore with the army, he was 21. He had the stroke (actually it was three, one after the other) then a year later he had a heart attack. After the stroke he was in a coma for nearly 3 weeks. The first thing he did when he was allowed up was to get a cigarette from his wife. He doesn’t drink except for diet coke!! and strong coffee. The middle two, Darren and Sam never smoked but Darren used to drink quite a lot, still does at functions but not during the week, Sam never did either. The youngest, Russell did everything except hard drugs. Cannabis, cigarettes and alcohol. He started all three before he was 16, the cigarettes at 13. The cannabis nearly got him into trouble. I told you all before that the back fence of his house is the back fence to the Linwood Mosque where the gunman killed 10 people. He was growing a couple of plants in his garden and the police came round investigating the shootings and saw the plants. He could have been arrested (it is still illegal here) but they told him to remove them or he would be charged. He only has a tiny garden so he obviously wasn’t growing it for selling. He has cut down his drinking as well so maybe I won’t inherit his house! He works with asbestos so has to have a medical every year and I think he got the hard word from the doctor this time. Tobacco was high on the list for the last government; they were working toward eliminating it by 2030. This current govt appointed someone who has links with the tobacco industry as the minister in charge so that isn’t going to happen now. Russell said that 50grams of tobacco was costing $150, I think a pack of 20 cigarettes is $50 now most of which is tax, one of the reasons he gave it up.

Jeanne, the girls look so cute on their swimsuits, and that background is just perfect for them! I wonder if one 18 inch doll would be able to use it too. I don’t recall you making a swimsuit for the bigger dolls, but I might be mistaken. Even an old fashioned Ed swimsuit for a doll like Samantha would be fun to see!

I am so glad that Dorothy is fine and will get back to us soon! That was quite a scare for us! Also, seeing that Anne had a very nice birthday, just make our day better!

As for smokers herself, my father always did smoke, but gave that uo on his later years. My mother only smoked during social occasions, but never let us girls see her smoke. One of js girls smoke or did, ut all of our husbands did. Michael smokes a little now, and I wish he didn’t. Never in the house! To me, it seems pretty crazy to buy something, then burn it up!

If only it would stop raining here, I could be doing more outside. We need to stain the deck, but this weather isn’t cooperating! Then too, I haven’t gotten around to planting annuals yet either. Mother’s Day is usually the time for that, and that is Sunday! Already the fifth of May!

Oh dear, what a BUNCH of mistakes today! Hope you all can make out what I said!πŸ€ͺ

I couldn’t help chuckling at the comment you made about buying something and burning it up. Maybe that’s why I don’t smoke or drink to excess. I prefer spending money on things that endure. David’s hobby is wine and beer making so he gets fun from that but we still don’t drink more than a glass or two a week. The kits can be expensive and it makes me sleepy. But it’s good for what ails me. I sleep well after. David gets his fun from trying out all the different flavors and seeing what he can create himself. But my stepson and DIL are always complaining they don’t have any money and yet they smoke and when they go out one drink is never enough. And we have to watch our wine and beer inventory or it makes its way home with them and they don’t see the problem with that since it costs them nothing.

        1. Charlotte Trayer

My husband used to say, a second beer would put him to sleep (when he did drink, which was rare early in our marriage, and eventually we became complete teetotalers). He mentioned that to our pastor one time, and he asked Ron if he had any Native American blood in him. Ron said, yes, Cherokee (about 1/4 or 1/8, I don’t remember which), and our pastor said that often people with Native American blood in their lineage either were prone to alcoholism (Ron’s father and several of his father’s siblings were alcoholics) or it puts them to sleep! Very low tolerance. I have no idea where he came across that information, but given the above history in Ron’s family, it makes sense!

I love the girls today, since I have not been sewing since last year I love seeing your sewing even more. They look so happy on the back ground.

It is upstairs for me today, I didn’t make it yesterday. Ugg.

As for smoking, I remember my mom smoking Lucky Strikes when she was young but it didn’t last. Daddy smoked too much for years but stopped when a doc got thought to him. After that he only smoked at Christmas, and only 3 a day. As for me, when I was in high school I looked so young for my age I wanted to look older so I tried smoking. Fortunately it make me so sick I never smoked again. My second husband was a constant smoker, in the house too. I finally made him smoke outside but when he had a stroke he quit forever. Peyton has never smoked, thank goodness.

Once a month our church has something for the men. They call it Pipe Club. Mostly the men smoke cigars which David has never taken a liking to that so he bought a pipe. I always loved the smell of pipe smoke but when he went to smoke his pipe one day I had to ask him not to. I almost couldn’t breathe. So now if he wants to smoke when he is not at Pipe Club he does it at the shop. Mostly he just reserves it for once a month at Pipe Club.

      1. Joy in northern CA

Interesting about the pipe. My dad smoked cigarettes because they gave men rations of them during WWII. He was a lieutenant commander but maybe it was the stress of war that started it. He quit when I was pretty young and started smoking a pipe, like his Danish father. All the Danish men smoked pipes. However, he quit when his father developed lymph node cancer in the neck, and died. It was pretty awful. That was about 1958. My dad lived until almost 95. So quitting smoking the pipe sure helped him.

        1. yes, that is how my daddy started smoking- WW2, he was a prisoner of war from Holland. Before he was taken up in the razzia, his family was really really poor. Smoking was not even a thought to be considered.
When he was a prisoner, he went all over Germany and I just finished his 300+ page diary and I have to say! He was blessed, he survived. He and his dutch pals all of them ate pretty well considering that the people in Holland were starving.
Anyway, yes, smoking was a thing then wasn’t it?

  4. Whooo, these girls in their suits are fantastic! All of them look ready for play! Jeanne, these fit so perfectly! I love the psychedelic one the best, but all of them have lovely colors. Jeanne, it is sweet to see all 4 girls together. Best Friends!
Happy Tuesday everyone! Sorry some of you are getting rain. Here I believe we are still in a serious drought. I will have to water the flowers I planted.

I have to be zippy this morning, the warranty person is coming this morning (11 months now in this new house!!) and we do not have any glaring problems, just a few things I find that are shabby workmanship. I am not going to think about it too much.
Today is going to be 85ΒΊ! whaaat? so the usual, super chilly house in the morning and roasting house in the evening, yay Spring. At least we have sun shine. I do know the temperatures are going to swing to the chilly side over the next few days.
I will check back later and read more comments on the adorable swim fashion show, and the latest from each of you.
    bye now πŸ™‚

I love the first pic because it looks like the girls are actually wading in the surf. So fun and cute suits too. How about some team suits like the kids wear for swim team? Solids with trim, I think. might be fun too. Jeanne Marie’s swim shop is officially open for your summer needs. πŸ™‚
Very interesting to hear about smoking. I have to admit that occasionally, before kids, we did toke a joint with friends on occasion. Now, a lot of those friends in their 70’s use cannabis on occasion for better sleep. However, now it comes in the form of cookies that can be purchased at any supply shop. Strange how times change.
A big thank you to Rosemary, for emailing me the tiny bag information. I really want to try making one. They are so cute.
We got in a walk yesterday before the rain began. Then, we had some good sprinkles that stopped overnight. No watering necessary around here for a few days. I’ll be out later checking to make sure that no water has collected any place. Don’t want to start breeding mosquitoes.
Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! I’m making artichoke roll ups with Las Palmas green sauce and mozzarella cheese. πŸ™‚

      1. Joy in northern CA

Ha ha, Rosemary! I’d have to use up all of my fabric first. Would probably take many years. I’ve never been any further east than to fly over it. Someday, I would like to see some of the historic sites there. πŸ™‚

Your dinner sounds yummy. I live in a very Hispanic area. All the people in my mobile home park are Hispanic but no one seems to have mentioned Cinco de Mayo. We usually go a couple times a week to a Mexican restaurant downtown and they usually do something special for the day, but I haven’t seen anything mentioned this year. Your mention of cannabis made me think of my two sisters. Beth the one nearest me born in 1949 and Beverly the youngest born in 1958. They both have glaucoma. Beth uses the drops in her eyes and Bev smokes weed. Beth thinks of marijuana as being illegal and Bev says whatever. I used to live in a first-floor apartment and the people above me smoked marijuana a lot. It always hung over my door. Problem is the stuff gives me a horrible headache, so I had to hold my breath to enter my apartment. Probably would be seen as a waste to some people. A chance to get a free high and I didn’t take it.

I have the feeling that a lot of folks are afraid to go to any big gatherings this year for fear of ICE. It was fun this morning to hear on a local radio channel a group called the Bear Cubs Club Mariachi Band. They were good, but it reminded me of long ago when I was a songleader for the Bear Cubs, our local junior college, in the late 60’s. πŸ™‚

  6. okay, the home warranty “person” is going to be here soon-ish.
Meanwhile, I am shopping for fabric…. just looking.
I love Heather Ross’s fabric designs.
I do not have bathing suit fabric but how hard would it be to make tiny bikini’s like this https://maytheonefourthbewithyou.com/products/sayulita-by-heather-ross-sea-breeze?variant=41994327785554 ???
I do not think I could install elastic… but gosh those tiny suits are so cute.
    okay, be back later …πŸ˜„

    1. Barbara in SE Texas

Cute fabric. I made tons of bathing suits for my Little Dreamers last summer but I used pretty elastic on the edges because I was having so much trouble trying to cover the elastic around the edges. I saw where Magalie had used that on her bodysuits so I bought her pattern and did the same. It made some really cute swimsuits. The others I buy from Jeanne who seems to have the process down to a science.

        1. Joy in northern CA

Most of those early bikinis were made from cotton fabric. Very few stretchy things around back then. You could make a cute little bottom and simple top from cotton fabric that would be adorable. πŸ™‚

That backdrop looks so real with the girls standing in the water. A bevy of beautiful swimsuits. It would be hard to decide which to buy. I really do like the one on Freida but then the others are pretty too. Looking forward to seeing more.

  8. Didn’t have time to weigh in on the smoking thing. Neither of my parents did (thank goodness) my maternal grandmother didn’t either. My maternal grandfather did until I was two and was told he must quit or die. He did that day and lived to be 84.
I have never once tried or had the desire to try. Standing near a fireplace or grill is enough smoking for me.
The only thing I will buy to burn up is a lovely 100% beeswax or soy candle and certainly not very often. I mostly use the flickering flame battery ones I requested as gifts.

What cute suits. Rozen’s is my favorite.

  9. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

Jeanne I do love the new backdrop it really enhances your photos. It looks so realistic in the pictures. Love all the swimsuits.
I finished the blocks yesterday for the crossroads quilt. Now I have no leaders or enders. I have decided that my next quilt will be an I Spy quilt for my great grandson’s 1st birthday in August but I need to prepare for a leaders and enders as well. I will get all the batting and backing cut out this week for the three finished quilts and get started on quilting those. I still have all the borders to do for the Alice quilt too and a few applique blocks.
It is going to be warm today, 24C, or at least that’s what the weather man said last night. He did tell us that yesterday was going to be 18C and we ended up with 11C! so might take his prediction with a pinch of salt! Thursday and Friday it will be raining so need to get the washing dry today. We don’t have a dryer. The sun is free!
    Have a good day
