It’s beginning to look like a Civil War dress…

Hi everyone,
I worked today on the new Civil War dress, but my hours sure didn’t produce very many pictures. When you say I made the bodice, added the lace, sewed in the sleeves, put on the cuffs, and attached the collar… it sounds like there should be oodles and oodles of pictures, but that’s not case… at least today… maybe tomorrow.

I grabbed American Girl, Rebecca, as my model, because she was on the front row in the dolly cabinet, but I’m liking the way she looks in this very pretty fabric, so she just might be the one who gets to show it off to the whole world! :o)

Here are a few pictures I took as I finished each of the areas mentioned above. The lace was centered so each side looked the same.

If you click on any picture it will enlarge.

I decided to use the burgundy fabric as it goes perfectly as a coordinating print. Tiny cuffs were added to the puffy short sleeves.

I made the stand collar in the same fabric as the dress because of what I’ve decided to do next…

I got into my buttons and found these 3 that went fairly well with the fabric. The buttons are just pinned on the front. I already know which one I’m going to use… *wink* *wink*

Well, I need to get to bed, so I can have a full day of sewing tomorrow (if that happens!)

Hope you like it so far…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I know how it is, Jeanne–sometimes it seems like you do a lot of sewing but it only looks like you did a little!

The lace is so pretty on the fabric–really brightens it up-and I like the burgundy trim, too.

As to the buttons, either the first one or the third one would work well. However, the little cameo is too pale for this fabric, I think.”

Rosemary and Barbara, I replied to your comments yesterday. Joy, I’m sorry your latest caper wasn’t the most successful! Hope we’ll get to see pictures soon!

Now it’s time to head off for bed.

Thanks for your prayers, Charlotte. We have no idea what is bringing this on because until recently she was over the moon about him.

So glad to hear more good news about Daniel. Will he have to use the oxygen much longer? I am so glad he was with you on Roy’s Anniversary. So many memories, good and sad.

Good morning, I can’t believe I am first! We had a full day of 2 doc appointments yesterday in Savannah, one at 8:30 and one at 3:30. We had hoped to go to the Y there but lack of life guards spoiled that so we went to a nice library for awhile, ate breakfast, and sat for 2 hours waiting for our eye checkups. I still have stuff from the convention all over the living room. I have photos and will get them to Jeanne soon. My DIL and my granddaughter are arriving on Sunday, we have some where to be EVERY morning this week and boy do I have work to do upstairs in the guest room!

The convention was great even though the hotel wasn’t the greatest. They were trying to feed us with “Southern dinners” and I thing the chef must have been from New England! Thank goodness there were nice restaurants close by.
We walked to the famous ice cream place and I ate TWO, lemon and peach! I am on a diet now! The best part is seeing all the great friends that I only get to see at the conventions.

Heading out to water aerobics in a few minuets, to y’all later.

OOps, I was not first, didn’t see Charlotte’s at first for some reason.

Dear Sissy, I am glad you had a nice time. I am sorry the food wasn’t the best. I hope you were able to take photos.

Yes, Dorothy, I have too many photos, will have to go though them before sending to Jeanne. I think she has plenty or other ones to use right now.

Sounds like the convention was fun minus the menu. I too would love to see some pics. Maybe someday I’ll get to one. 🙂

Oh, I LOVE this Jeanne! However, is this the same fabric you showed the other day as your favorite? On my monitor and also iPad, that was a much lighter, brighter blue background, than this seems to be today! Today’s is more navy blue! I really like the darker blue a lot better!

Oh, I love that lace overlay on the bodice! Just beautiful! And the cranberry colored fabric for the armbands is just perfect! What’s not to like? I can’t wait to see the skirt attached, and you still have another piece of material that you haven’t used.

As far as the buttons go, my only pick would be the first one, the cameo is beautiful, but the white of it is too white, and the third is, well, kind of oddly shaped, and I just don’t care for it on the dress.

This is turning out to be a beautiful outfit, and I can’t wait to see what is next!

It looks like we all like your fabric and lace choices and disagree on the pins. The third is just pinned on, isn’t it? It would be straight if it were sewed on? I like it and always like cameos, but here the cameo may be too ordinary. Maybe that decision can wait until the dress is closer to finished. It’s going to be beautiful. Will there be a hat? Maybe you should give us a Civil War dress slideshow. I recall a headpiece with a dress that was, if I remember correctly, black and white with red accents.

One of my favorite books is The Fashionable Lady in the 19th Century, published in 1960. My copy has been falling apart for years. I got it someplace wonderful, like the Smithsonian. Yesterday I got the intelligent idea to see if it is replaceable. Yes! I found a slipcovered hardback in great condition in England for only $9, compared to a like new copy here for $2,470. Mine does have a $24 shipping fee (I hate it when they do that — charge excess shipping to make up for a low price), but in this case….

Last week my email to this site was refused. This week I’m making an email copy, just in case. I wanted to give you 3 Hitty sites.

    Here’s a Hitty web page
    https://ataleoftwohittys.com/the-antique-shop/?fbclid=IwY2xjawL_VklleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETFRRUtJN1Nua1pueDVBemZuAR4IQL7XVZZFeBP-1kHOiGqljA6gorm8cIeu9F_wrxx3hsUsm0yHpa58O_LdtA_aem_1ATrLZMFVPbBSSjQ9LrhvA
with background info and some illustrations from the book.. There’s also a drawing I like of Field and friend looking at Hitty at the antique shop.

If you want to buy a Hitty like the one in the picture (or her clothes and furniture), go to Etsy and look for “The Hitty Shop” (1000 sales in 4 years).

Thanks for the sites. Some great information there. I mentioned to you that I had a 1941, copy of Hitty and started reading. I’m almost finished now reading a few pages here and there. I’ve found it very interesting. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

  5. Oh my!!! this is beautiful! I absolutely adore the lace and the sleeves so far!
Happy Tuesday every one. I hope all of you enjoy a productive day.
I have a lot of things to do today.

Now, I can see why Jeanne, likes this fabric. The color change is great on my monitor today, just like Linda’s. I like how the lace feeds into the sleeve seam. Looks so nice. I was expecting sleeves like on the pattern, but these are perfect. As to the buttons, the first one seems to match the best, but I would like to see it on a chain rather than sewn on as they all look like they might poke Rebecca in the chin. 🙂 Can’t wait to see the skirt attached. This is going to be a lovely outfit.

A little work was done on the deck yesterday before the sun hit. Then, I got into a necessary cleaning frenzy and by the time the vacuuming was done in several rooms and floors washed, it was too late to get in any late yard work. I was too tired anyway. So, hopefully later, after the shade hits, I can do some more because that won’t be possible with the heatwave that starts tomorrow.

    1. Barbara in SE Texas

Yikes you did all that cleaning in one day?! How blessed you are. I used to clean my whole house in a day, even taking down, washing and rehanging curtains. Today it takes me all day to clean one bathroom.

    2. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Joy, I missed your comments yesterday. Oh, no! I am so sorry the caper was foiled. I am glad that you showed him that you only got one doll though.

I may have told you that I knew a lady who used to have her doll packages sent to a friend’s house so her husband wouldn’t know. The friend would “deliver” the packages when the husband was away (laugh). I am not suggesting that you do this, I am just reporting.

The IMF (Impossible Missions Force – Dolly Division) still supports your efforts. Good Luck!

      1. Joy in northern CA

Good idea about the delivery to a friend. Have to think about that. And I always feel that there is always room for one more, doll that is. 🙂

This dress is going to be so beautiful. I love the lace treatment. I like the cranberry fabric on the sleeves and I too prefer the first button as some others do.

Finally got a good rain here this morning. Other parts of the Houston area have gotten tons of it recently but we west of Houston have seen little to none. Mostly none and even my 4 o’clocks were looking sad and they can stand up to anything.

    1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Barbara, I read yesterday’s last night. I was so sorry to hear about Sean and Dionne. I know how something like this can hurt the family. My best friend has this happen with her son. He and his wife had “grown apart” and he fell for a younger girl who was a coworker. She had been trying to get him and she won. They have 4 children, and the older girl, in college, will not see him at all. My friend got so upset over it her hair started falling out. So sad. I pray that Dionne will come back to her senses!

      1. Barbara in SE Texas

So sorry to hear about your friend’s family. I think we may have an answer, but I want to make sure before I post. If what we think is happening is right, we could be in for a rough ride but there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.

  8. This will be so pretty and perfect for fall. The lace on the bodice is gorgeous. As for the brooch pins I would pick the third without a doubt. I enlarged it and it has all the matching swirls and designs of the dress. It looks as if it was personally made for it. Victorian bar pins were the style and of course the Antebellum/Civil War and Victorian era overlap each other.

    1. Joy in northern CA

Laura, I think you are right. I was looking at colors on the pins, but when I looked again, that long one placed lower than the others as shown, really sets off the lace, era, and won’t poke Rebecca in the chin. 🙂

  9. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Jeanne, it will be so fun to see the finished dress. Your start shows it will be perfect! I love all the colors and laces, and the first button.

I will be sending MDCC photos as soon as I can get them together.

  10. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, I love the fabric. I am looking forward to seeing the finished dress.
