A Civil War dress will be next for the American Girl dolls!

Hi everyone,
I was helping my hubby outside Sunday afternoon with a project and didn’t make it into my sewing room until after 9:00 tonight, so I only have a few pictures to share.
I was thinking all day about whether to make a Back to School dress or a Civil War dress from my latest stash of fabrics… I guess you can tell from today’s title which won out!

I absolutely LOVE this Civil War fabric and took my time trying to figure out just what I wanted to do with it. I looked on the internet at actual illustrations of Civil War dresses but there were so many, I became confused. Then I looked at pictures of past Civil War dresses I had made, hoping one of them would jump off the screen at me and say, “Yes, this is the one… pick me!” It didn’t exactly happen the way I was hoping but looking at some of my dresses, made me remember the vintage laces Kathie had given me. When I laid a few different pieces on top of the fabric, I had a plan.

(The lace shown in my pictures isn’t as white as it looks…) It’s definitely “vintage!”

I only have a few pieces cut out so far because I only have a half yard of the fabric and the length of the skirt will be determined by how things go with the bodice.
I did find 2 coordinating pieces… a tan and a burgundy piece that go VERY WELL with the main fabric. After I get started on the dress, I’ll see if I want to use them.

So let me show you these couple pictures and your imagination will have to do the rest…

Okay, does anyone think they have it figured out and what it will look like?

I’ll do my best to work on it and make your “dreams” come true. I think it’s going to be wonderful!! :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I kind of thought you’d go for the Civil War look this time; it’s been quite a while since the last one, if memory serves.

I am really torn as to which of the two contrasting fabrics go better with the focus print. Just when I think I’ve made up my mind, I look again….

The lace is lovely, however you are planning to use it.

Today (Sunday) was the first anniversary of Ron’s death. Our son spent most of the weekend with me, and all in all, it went pretty well. I had a couple of little weepy moments, but for the most part, I did okay. Now I’m by myself again; he’s staying up in Everett for a couple of days as he has an early appt. Tuesday morning; then he’ll be back here. His oxygen concentrator is here, so he needs to come and refill the tanks periodically, at least. (He just recently got out of the hospital from having double pneumonia, and still gets supplemental oxygen at times.) Thank you all for your prayers on his behalf.

I’m so happy a Civil War dress is in the making, Jeanne! I love the colors of the fabrics that you have picked out, but cannot really decide whichl fabric goes where, except for the cutout part of the bodice and of course, the skirt with the lace overlay. What a beautiful piece of lace!

I think you will decide on which fabric to use as you go along, and of course a bonnet could actually be in the picture too, this will be one fun project as you go along!

What a hard day for you, Charlotte, but so happy to hear that Daniel is doing so much better!

  3. I wrote a long verbose comment and *pooof* it did not print. Haha oh well

Firstly, Charlotte, it has been a year already, You have carried such courage.
I am so happy Daniel was able to come to you and stay and go through this with you.
God will continue to bless you.

Jeanne, I know what this dress will look like exactly!!! 😁 and it is going to be beautiful
I am looking forward to seeing the progress.

The verbose subjects were just about my dear Uncle Jan (my mom’s little brother). The Angels came and took him straight to Heaven two weeks before his 100th birthday. He and his family live in Enschede Netherlands and I do keep in touch with my cousin Lex.
The other boring content to share is that we are still moving out of the big house and how tiresome it is, but honestly. We are blessed. Besides, packing, going through, moving sorting
is all good exercise I guess.
I hope all of you have a wonderful day

    1. Thinking of you, Rosemary. How wonderful your dear uncle just went straight home to Heaven on angel’s wings.

So sorry about your uncle, but what a very long life. He was the same age as my Aunt Dorothy when she died.
Sounds like you are coming along on the sorting/packing. I’ll bet that it feels great as you complete each box. šŸ™‚

I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle, Rosemary. Last spring we lost my last remaining uncle, just a few months shy of his 102nd birthday. How wonderful we had our uncles for as long as we did!

Sounds like another busy weekend for Jeanne. Always another project. šŸ™‚
I can’t wait to see Jeanne’s vision on this dress. I couldn’t figure out how the fabrics would be used together until I went back and looked at the pattern. I presume that the pattern shown is the one? After looking at the Pemberley patterns, there were several I really liked with the dropped necklines, but this pattern will shine I’m sure. Seeing the lace on top of the fabric really toned it down and immediately gave it a more vintage look. Not a clue how either of the other fabrics will work for accents though. The red seems a little too bright and I’d probably like to see something in a darker burgundy. Although, everything now could be just in my eyes. Colors can be really off now. Can’t wait to see how everything comes together.
The twisting out of screws on the old deck is taking forever mainly because we can only work on it before the sun hits which has been unmerciless. And, it looks like we are in for a real heatwave later this week, through the weekend, and into next week. Not going to be pretty. But, yesterday, while it was cooler in the shade, I was able to hit the weeds again. I hesitated on the tall dandelions because they were being used by a group of honey bees, so I left them for now. šŸ™‚ I’ll get them before they go to seed. Small squares of ground at a time, as I tackle the dry area. As a reprieve, I checked out the zinnias which are lovely and also covered with bees doing their work. šŸ™‚
I almost forgot that I had a delivery Saturday. The box didn’t arrive with the regular mail, so I forgot about it. Then, later, when I went out the front door to bring in Charlotte’s, bowl, I noticed a large very obvious box sitting on the landing and on the steps sort of. I guess my mind must be slipping because, I decided to walk down and get the box. Bad mistake. I picked it up and thinking that other person was busy, no concerns. I should have left it to bring in at a later time, but since I didn’t, I brought it up the steps and set it by the door. Then, I slipped back inside only to see other person standing there saying, “what did you do with the box?” Yikes, got caught big time. He was apparently watching from the window. You know, I got the interrogation, “I thought that you weren’t going to buy any more dolls!” And more. So, I went back outside and brought in the big box. Opened it up to prove that there was only one doll and was delighted to find my latest. Although, she has a tiny cheek rub, all in all she is a cutie who needs a full outfit. šŸ™‚ Must get on that.

    1. So sorry you got caught on your last caper, Joy. It’s a good thing there was only one though. It’s too bad about the cheek rub. If it’s an RRFF Derf should replace her. I certainly wouldn’t accept that at the price those dolls cost. I also can’t fathom a guess as to who it is as there’s been quite a few recently.

Well, this girl is 19″ and an older model. Not a Ruby Red. However, I do wish that I had a few of the older RR’s. There is a new core line coming out at some point. She was shown at the Modern Doll Convention. Her name is Tina and she had pretty red hair. šŸ™‚

  5. I of course am thrilled a Civil War dress is next!! The main fabric is lovely and so is the lace. The lace is just gorgeous! The making of it will be a delight to watch.

Thinking of you, Charlotte. I’m happy Daniel got to spend the weekend with you and also that he is recovering so nicely.
Sunday (August 17th) was my maternal grandmother’s birthday – Heavenly birthday 122. Sadly she died when I was 14, but I had my maternal grandfather until I was 25 and he got to know my daughter. It also happens to be Black Cat Appreciation Day and I have (had) and love black cats (plus many other colors) ! šŸˆā€ā¬›šŸ„°ā¤ļø

Very nice fabrics but I think I’ll wait and see what comes of them since I have no ideas what I would do. I like the pattern.

Charlotte, I’m so glad that Daniel is doing so well and was able to keep you company during a difficult weekend. I can’t believe a year has passed but I know for you it seems like a long time. Too many first.

Asking for prayers for my son Sean’s marriage. Dionne is going through a bad patch and it has really blindsided us. They went away for the weekend and we hung out with the grandkids. Sean thought getting her away to places she enjoyed might help but it doesn’t seem to. She has a friend (I use the term loosely) who just got divorced and is putting things in her head and sadly Dionne is easy to manipulate. She is easily brainwashed because she chooses the wrong people for friends. It’s like Stockholm Syndrome when she gets a friend. We were happy when the last one moved away but now she’s got a new friend. Sean is unwilling to throw away a 16-year relationship let alone a marriage at the say-so of her friend so he plans to hang in there and see if he can work her through it. She also plays a video game he thinks is not good for her. She had a very difficult upbringing with no one ever being there for her and we thought she would appreciate getting away from that. Up until their anniversary in March everything was great so whatever is the problem has happened since then but everything seems to boil down to this “friend” of hers that she is on the phone with constantly. At first we thought she was having an affair but that does not seem to be the case. Thankfully. She used to babysit for this woman’s two children but never really liked her. Why all of a sudden she is her BFF and go-to confidante is beyond us. I agree with Sean that he should hang in there because she’s in a difficult place right now. I told him to call her OB/GYN and see if she can help if it is hormonal. She just had a check-up recently. All prayers appreciated. I am very thankful that Sean has decided to wait and see rather than rush into doing something before we can find out all the facts.

Very sorry to hear about your son and wife. Maybe some marriage counseling is in order whether your son’s wife attends or not. Very difficult situation especially with the kids. Definitely is going to affect them. Just be there if the call comes as I’m sure you will be. Thinking of you.

Thanks, Joy. Hopefully this won’t continue. I have a friend whose oldest daughter went through this for a while and she and her husband were near separation when she “returned to normal”. No one knows for sure what triggered it but they were all glad when it was over.

    2. Charlotte Trayer

I’m so sorry to hear about this, Barbara. Will definitely keep Sean and Dionne (and family) in prayer, that things work out to the good, and this friend’s influence is lessened and diminished daily.
