Hi everyone,
I hope someone has something to talk about today. I need to take the day off again.
Maybe I’ll be back tomorrow… maybe Monday!

Looks like I’m the first one on tonight! Jeanne, I hope things are okay with Reuben, but frankly, I’m a bit worried because you didn’t say anything at all about him, and I’m one of those who worries if I don’t hear!
I did reply to a few of the posts yesterday, so you all might want to go back and check. I remember I replied to Sally and Joy, and I can’t remember who else.
Towards the end, there was talk about seafood, so I thought I’d add my 2¢ worth! I don’t eat oysters. I saw a raw one once, and that was enough for me! 😂 I also don’t eat clams or scallops (have tried both) and similar things. I do like lobster, crab, and crayfish, and have even tried octopus! (Not bad–mild flavor, a little firm in texture, as I recall.)
Being Swedish, of course I love most kinds of fish–salmon, whitefish, smelt, brook trout, etc. And I really really LOVE both lutefisk and pickled herring! I grew up on them, and have even made pickled herring with my dad, many years ago. This coming weekend is the bazaar up at Normanna Hall, and I’m hoping to at least stop in long enough to pick up a couple of containers of pickled herring. They make their own every year, and it’s delicious! 😋
I tried on my Land’s End slippers tonight, and I actually CAN get my left foot into it, but it is a pretty snug fit, so I’m still using my “sloppy” slippers around the house. I think I might be able to wear the at least a little while starting by this weekend. Once I get that far, the dress shoes aren’t far behind! Sneakers will take a while longer.
Charlotte, you may be exactly right about the ceramic “candy” dish. My mother loved candy and always had some in a different bowl with lid than this one. I’ll bet that is what it is. Thanks so much!
You’re welcome, Joy!
Dear Charlotte, I am glad you are able to tolerate casual footwear.
As for seafood, yes, please. I love salmon. I really love smoked salmon. It’s all ready to eat, no cooking needed, thank you, says the non-cook (smile).
When I go out to eat, I always try to find a place with a senior menu. I mean, hey, there should be some “perks” to aging, right? I immediately look to see if there is a seafood dish and usually there is.
My mother always made salmon patties when I was a child, and I loved those! However, since having three cats, and they only ate canned cat food, I am reminded of salmon cat food whenever I eat salmon now, which is never!
Charlotte, I was invited to lunch by a friend who grew up with Lute fish and Pickled Herring. That was what was served at her lunch. I thought I would die trying to be polite and eat it. Never again and to each his or her own!
Oh, pickled herring! My father loved it for a snack in the evenings and I learned to love it too! Haven’t had any since then, actually forgot all about it!
Haha, yes, to each his/her own. My grandparents often had creamed herring in the fridge especially for Christmas/New Year’s. I loved it as a child and into adulthood. I haven’t had it in ages.
I liked shrimp, clams, and crab then, too.
I will not touch oysters or lobster. Even the thought of raw oysters makes me shutter.
I forgot about shrimp. I love them! About half the time I eat at IHOP, I order the senior prawns and chips, only I get the veggie (at the moment, it’s fresh spinach, before that it was broccoli) instead of the chips/fries.
According to Google Translate, you are going to participate in a second hand toy exchange. I am not sure exactly what that is.
We do have thrift stores where people can go and buy used items for not too much money. We also have places where people can donate toys that will be given to families in need.
Please let us know more about your activity. It sounds interesting.
When I was still teaching, our whole school would have a field trip to the fire department. Each student bringing along a new toy to donate for the holiday giveaway. All of the kids loved to see the fire trucks and where the fire fighters lived on their shifts. 🙂
What a great opportunity for the children both for giving and for learning.
Dear Georgina,
Thank you for explaining. I understand now. We would call this a “flea market,” where people gather and sell household items and toys and other things.
You are so kind to help the people who need assistance, especially at Christmastime!
For years David and I celebrated my birthday (12/26) by going to an Irish pub for a St. Stephen’s Day mass. The price of admittance was a contributed item or cash for the Lord of the Streets Ministry (for homeless people). We always took blankets. Tons of people would come and a lot of goods and money were contributed. We stopped going a couple years ago because it became so popular they ran out of seating (it’s a small pub) and I can’t stand for long anymore. But it was wonderful while we could do it.
Dear Barbara, what a wonderful birthday gift for you and for the people who needed kind assistance.
Hi, Y’all, I have to write now before my sons get up, I have a lot for them to do to get the oyster roast together.
I grew up going to oyster roasts with my family. I wouldn’t even try an oyster, but would stand by my mom and open them for her. I don’t remember when I started to enjoy them, but I love them now. I can eat them raw but prefer them cooked just until the shell starts opening. Then you pull the top shell off, and slurp in the oyster. Yum! They are salty and taste like the ocean. Don’t forget, I grew up right at the ocean. We lived so close that the sound of the waves put us to sleep at night. I love all sea food.
As for church clothes, Peyton and I wear choir robes so it doesn’t matter what we wear. I used to dress up when I was young, in those days, females wore hats to church, even the choir had to wear funny white hats. Our church has different outfits worn, some in jeans, girls in short skirts, older people dressed nicely. We don’t worry about it, just glad to have people coming to church.
As for Ruben, when y’all mentioned a tick I remembered that happening to a dog once. They thought it was going to die, it was like Ruben, couldn’t get up. We drove there and didn’t see the dog, it had dirt on in and we ran over it. It was a small car and didn’t kill it. The dog got up! We looked it over and found some dead ticks on it. We guessed the car must have killed the ticks. I am not kidding, this really happened. I will email Jeanne and tell her to check for ticks.
I am still sending prayers for Y’all, but the boys are getting up. I will try more later. Hugs!
I emailed Jeanne with my tick comment also, Sissy. It was my first thought yesterday with his symptoms especially if he doesn’t get a heartworm (for mosquitoes) and tick preventative medication like Revolution.
We did use a flea and tick preventive when we had our dog and heartworm pills too. We don’t have much of a problem here with ticks but on our property in CO they are awful. Fleas are everywhere and we have horrible mosquitoes here if it rains a lot so we wanted to cover all the bases.
Jeanne, we will carry on as usual and keep you in our prayers. I hope Reuben is doing better, but we have not heard. Sometimes no news is good news!
Oh my, the leaves around here! I wish I was 20 years younger and could rake longer than I can now, but since the big tree in the back yard is about bare, we won’t have much more raking to do back there, but the front yard is FULL now, and here’s hoping a lot of leaves blow away up the street before I get to them! I’m sure the neighbors would love to have that happen!🤣
I do want to get the yard cleaned up before putting Christmas decorations out. At least I don’t have to host Thanksgiving this year, since my daughter has the honors! What are everyone’s plans? I get to do the pumpkin pies and some fall cupcakes, the “fun” stuff!
So glad you’re back!!
Me too, Joy!
I’m glad you found your way back on, Linda. We haven’t raked the leaves except out of the garden beds in probably 25 years! We mow them with the mulching mower.
We do mulch ours too, Laura, but it still is too much for the lawn, so we rake and blow the leaves underneath a huge cedar tree in the back yard, and every spring, there is nothing there! That tree is huge, like Rockefeller Center tree huge! The leaves provide cover for insects and critters that need it in winter.
We don’t leave it all on the lawn. We have the bag on part of the time. We also put a lot of raked leaves in the back corner of the yard where the stand of pussy willows are for wild animals and insects. Have to help them including the lightning bugs/ fireflies.
Linda, so glad you are back! As for the leaves, there is a neat hand held blower you can buy. I have one. Amazon carries them. Go here and check one the hand held blower made by “Seese”. I love mine.
Oh Sissy, we do have two blowers, but we have to blow leaves in a pile and then rake them underneath our big cedar tree. A blower only blows the leaves from one place to another, so it doesn’t get rid of anything. The back breaking part is putting leaves from the front yard in bags to take down to the cedar tree in the back.We now have the backyard about done, since the trees there are bare, but the front yard, oh my gosh, and leaves are still on the trees!
I hope today goes well for Jeanne and George. Jeanne has so much going on this week. Kind of crazy for a lot of folks with turkey day coming fast.
We revisited HDepot again yesterday and Best Buy as well, wanting to check out the appliances we’re considering. Couldn’t even find the one we liked so it must have been at Lowe’s. Ha ha. Way too many appliances out there I guess. And I think I’ve worn out the LG site trying to fine just the right model numbers. So, if all goes well, we’ll head back down to Lowe’s and see about ordering. We did manage to find an air gap at Home Depot but had to find someone to locate it for us. He quickly put in what we wanted on his phone and then even showed us where on the aisle it was located. The modern way of service with the indispensable phone I guess. 🙂 In case anyone doesn’t know about air gaps, CA now requires one if you have a dishwasher. We have never had one because we simply coiled the hose up on top of the appliance as usual. We’ve done that for several dishwashers over the years. But, now, we have to have a one which will require further installation charges to get it to the counter top. Fortunately, we have an extra hole in our sink so it will be there next to the faucet. Currently, we have a soap dispenser there. Never use it anyway. If we didn’t have that sink hole, it would require the installer to drill through the countertop. Since we have tile, I can’t imagine that or even if we had quartz, I wouldn’t allow someone to mess with that. So back to the air gap. We have a brushed stainless, I think it is called, faucet but of course, none of the air gap covers come in that color. So unclear what we will do about that. This little plastic simple cap is over seven dollars. The air gap around fifteen. So, if need be, we will take whatever color the installer has and go to HD and buy a can of spray paint and paint it the right color. Crazy. Too bad Joann’s isn’t still here as I would pick up some paint there for a dollar and use that. 🙂
Wishing Jeanne and George safe travels today and hoping for that miracle Reuben needs.
Good grief, Joy. That is crazy. I had to look up air gap. I don’t know exactly what yours has to be, but it appears you can get a brushed nickel one for either Lowe’s or Amazon.Maybe shop around.
I guess our dishwasher doesn’t have one, but then again it’s an older appliance.
Yes, we’ll be just fine, Jeanne. Yes, I grew up eating salmon patties and still like them today as well as grilled or baked salmon. Smoked salmon and smoked trout are also good. Yes, my kitties eat canned salmon cat food, but I have no association between that and salmon I eat.
Hope for an update on Reuben soon.
Dear Jeanne, prayers continue for you and George and Reuben.
I just sent through something to your email that you might be able to use.
Blessings to you from all of us here on the Sofa.
Well, I am so so late. So sorry. I have had a stupid cold all day. I woke up with a crushing headache. Wow, I never get sick, so this is just so annoying.
My head feels stuffed with cotton and my eyeballs feel like they are floating
Jeanne, all of you remain in my most fervent prayers this day. I hope you are experiencing calmness and feeling good.
All of you, do not get a cold. I am the worst sick person!!!
Charlotte, I am happy you got your puffy foot into the new slipper, but glad you are getting around in the sloppy slippers!
I missed the discussion about fish. I like salmon and some trout, I do not like clams or anything that looks or feels like rubberbands. 😩
Joy, I hope you get your appliances sorted soon. Everything just costs a lot these days.
Linda, good to hear from you. Agree about the raking, I enjoy it but it is always much more than handle now that the trees grew.
Sissy, enjoy the time with your sons.
I better run off now and dream up something for dinner already!!
Love, Rosemary
I’m late to the blog today so I hope people check back because I did make some comments.
I got a funny text from my daughter today asking if I had sent my grandson a science Advent calendar. Each year I send Jacquie Lawson Advent calendars to friends and family. I had just sent her an Advent calendar which she shares with our grandson but it sure wasn’t a science calendar. I was wondering what had gone wrong. Turns out the science calendar was from his aunt and fortunately the Jacquie Lawson calendar arrived almost immediately afterward. Andrea said they would have been grateful anyway but she was sure glad she didn’t have to explain to Anderson why there was no Jacquie Lawson calendar this year. They have been doing them together since he was about two and he loves them. After a year when both my sister Beth and I bought each other a JL Advent calendar and then bought one for ourselves, we realized we just needed to buy one for each other. If anyone has not seen these calendars, they are amazing and a great way to enjoy Advent and the month of December.
News on hubby’s ear. Well the good news is that his eardrum is healing very well on its own so no surgery needed. The bad news is that he has some horrible ear infection I never heard of before. Trying not to sound too gross, it developed below the hard wax in his ear. It started draining after he went to the GP and had some removed, but it took an ENT to diagnose the real problem and they have some special equipment to clean out the ear. Now he can at least hear some out of that ear. But the infection can be so serious that he has to return in 10 days to have it rechecked and then if not cleared up return in another ten days and do that until everything is back to normal. He is on high-powered antibiotic ear drops and they are a bit pricey but it sure beats the alternative. In the meantime he can’t get a hearing aid for that ear and it will probably have to be retested before he can. Since he has always had a hard wax problem and often had his ears cleaned over the years, he should have known something was amiss. He just assumed he was losing his hearing. I kept telling him to have his ears checked and he finally did. Thankfully the damage is not as bad as it could have been.
The weather people are still saying we will have some Fall weather for Thanksgiving. Highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s or 50s. Hope they’re right. We’re still using our A/C.
