Hi everyone,
My hubby is home now, not quite at his best,
I think what he needs is some quality rest!
I’m trying to be the best nurse that I can,
One day at a time, now that is our plan!
Okay, now it’s time to do what you all do best… visit with each other, encourage one another, share what’s been happening in your lives and even sometimes share your favorite recipes.
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m so glad to hear that George is home now! This has been a tough week for both of you, I’m sure.
I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments on yesterday’s blog. I have a couple of updates for you.
This afternoon I spent some time on the phone with insurance companies. I tried calling the number that I got for the other lady’s insurance company, and all they would do was ask for a number to which they could text. Sorry. I don’t text!! Period! So I called my own insurance co. and we had a nice chat. I told the lady what had happened, and how frustrated I was in trying to talk to a real person at the other insurance place. She had a different toll-free number for them, I called it, and lo and behold, I got to talk to a real person! She said a claims adjuster will be calling me within 24 hours, so that is good. Things progress!
However, my computer was a different situation. Looks like my old faithful is dying. After “only” 10-1/2 years!! They were quite impressed it had lasted that long. So I ended up buying a new one, and tomorrow I will bring both in and they will transfer files, etc. I also have some questions about this new one, so i have them written down and hope to get things resolved there, too.
We had our hottest day so far this year today–86! Tomorrow, though, it’s back to reality, with mid-60s and rain. I do like warm days.
So sorry for your car damage, glad you are able to get her insurance. No fun getting a new computer but you will get used to it soon.
Hope you are feeling better Sissy
Thank you so much, Anne. This has been really rough.
Well, hopefully you can have an easy repair…. or a car rental for a while which would be annoying. New cars these days are all computerized and I am pretty sure one of the many thousands of data centers is monitoring you. blah.
That is true, computers last on average 3-7 years.
Mac computers last longer because their software and hardware are tightly integrated. You can often resell your mac when you upgrade.
Old PCs are only valued for their left over parts.
Everything is expensive now.
How did you even manage to get a computer to last 10-1/2 years? It’s a pain getting a new one but it does keep you more up to date with the operating systems. This last time we had to get new computers because they were no longer supporting Windows 10. The time before my system totally crashed and couldn’t be repaired. Once you learn how the new computer works, it’s business as usual pretty quickly. So glad you got your insurance issue taken care of. I wouldn’t mind hot days if they were interspersed with cooler ones but that only happens here in the winter. In summer it’s just hot, hot, hot with a lot of humid thrown in.
yes, and we just hope we do not need to go out anywhere, walking. driving is tolerable.
Jeanne, I’m so happy to hear that George is back home, but I am sure this will be a big adjustment for him. That puts a lot of stress on you, so I am praying for both of you.
Don’t worry about us!
Charlotte, I too, don’t text, mainly because I don’t even have a phone to carry around. We have landlines and do have a cell phone, that is only for emergencies, and also my close caption phone. Since I lost my hearing at the age of 10, the phone has never been a big part of my life. Most people are shocked to hear that!
Before I lost my hearing, I remember answering the phone, and a voice said, “This is Harry Truman” then they hung up! Since Harry Truman was the president at the time, I was so excited to tell my mother that the president called! To my surprise, she laughed it off!
I need to get outside and do some trimming. We had the yard cut, but I like to trim, so I get to do that. It. Is getting pretty muggy now in the afternoon, so I want to get outside things done in the mornings.
As far as recipes, the other day I made chicken breasts topped with Swiss cheese, and cream of mushroom soup mixed with white wine. So easy and so good! I found the recipe in my Southern Living Cookbook, and it never fails me. Has anyone ever tried it?
Funny story about phone calls. That used to be the high light of child hood and having the opportunity to play around on the phone with friends haha wow. I think that was probably the progression of “ding dong ditch”
Do you have complete hearing loss? or are you able to use aids?
That is a challenge.
I have a cell phone and also rarely use it.
I do text and do not enjoy spending time on the phone or computer texting or surfing. It is all time consuming – pinterest and instagram are my weaknesses and I stay away because it is dumb to sit and stare at stuff.
Yes, Rosemary, I do wear one hearing aid in the ear that has some auditory nerve that works! My right ear auditory is completely paralyzed due to an experimental medication they gave me to save my life. I had nephritis, which progressed to the point of not being able to able to cure at that time, in the early 50’s. So I was given the drugs that they hoped would help me, and they did, but paralyzed my auditory nerves. By the time they caught on that my nerves were being paralyzed, the right ear nerve was gone, and the left partially. I was lucky, since it could have been my eyes, or who knows what? I never went to anything but a public school, and college and went on to become a teacher, so I did ok!
When I was young, I was the only one with a hearing aid, and now most of my friends are wearing them! I finally fit in!
Oh my goodness, Linda. I knew that you had lost most of your hearing, but never knew the reason behind it. Were you not a candidate for Cochlear implants?
Yes, such medical improvements with time. My mom had measles, mumps, and rheumatic fever as a child. Luckily, with Penicillin she only has a slight heart issue from the rheumatic fever. I practically lived on Penicillin as a child having so many ear infections before two sets of tubes. I have a slight hearing loss from those.
It left out scarlet fever which my mom has prior to rheumatic fever. Must have scared my grandmother half to death during all that time.
There was no such thing as cochlear implants when I lost my hearing, Laura. I was an adult when they came out with them, and I really didn’t want that since I was doing just fine. I am not sure of they help when a nerve is paralyzed, but anyway I am fine without it.
I also had measles, chicken pox, but not mumps, even though my 3 sisters all had it one Christmas. I guess I was immune! No rheumatic fever either. Your mom sure had a lot! Poor you with those ear infections!
I can still taste that horrible cod liver oil I had to take back then! Not fun!
My mother-in-law had meningitis as a teen and it left her with severe scoliosis. It sure didn’t slow her down though. She went to college, was a teacher (English and drama) and married the star of the college athletic teams. He was a champion hurdler and could have gone to the Olympics but was too proud to seek a sponsor. My mother-in-law could never have children and they were in their thirties when they decided to adopt. They adopted David and his biological sister when they were about 4 and 5 years old.
I was wondering what caused your hearing loss. I have a friend who had chemo and lost her hearing in one ear and some in the other. Sadly there was a lot we didn’t know about medications, etc., in the 1950s but thankfully what you took did save your life and you seem to have made an enjoyable one out of it. I don’t have any hearing loss but hubby does and has hearing aids in both ears. But what an amazing advancement they have made in them. It’s no longer one size fits all or even both ears being the same. David has a different set up in each ear. Auditory tests are no longer about can you hear or not but where is the loss and how much. His journey has been amazing.
Yes, I know cochlear implants wouldn’t have existed then, but it makes sense you didn’t bother as an adult if you were doing just fine.
Yes, my mom, daughter, and I all had chicken pox. Of course, my daughter and I were vaccinated for measles and mumps along with the other vaccines.
My mom clearly remembers getting the polio vaccine and Jonas Salk spoke at her school.
I don’t make your exact recipe but do one with chicken breasts with mushroom soup and sharp cheddar shredded cheese on top. It’s one of my favorites since it takes about five minutes to prepare and I can do other things while it is baking. I think I’d like to try yours too. I always keep cream of mushroom soup on hand so just need to get Swiss cheese. I’m sure hubby has some white wine in his inventory somewhere although I can’t remember him bringing any up recently so maybe he is out.
I had no idea you lost your hearing so young. That must have been difficult for you. I love Andrea Bocelli but can’t imagine how he performs for a huge audience not being able to see. He was born with glaucoma and did have some sight until he was about 12 and got hit in the head by a ball and totally lost his sight. I have never been a big one for being attached to a phone for no other reason than I have other things to do. It seems to me sometimes others don’t and they want to call and chat and chat and chat and they are hard to get off the phone without being rude. I had a friend once that had a friend that used to call her in the evening while my friend was trying to get her three kids ready for bed. She said she was constantly excusing herself and putting the phone down and when she came back the woman was still on there and nothing she said would clue the woman that she needed to say good-bye. Finally she would have to say her husband needed her to help with something and she really had to go. I have a lengthy chat with my daughter every few weeks but she is so busy with her Airbnb and wedding venue business I just wait for her to set up a call with me.
I have had a few friends like that….
and also sometimes my mom would get lonely for me and call me in the middle of the day. – landline days.
I would fold laundry or do other chores, when I had a cell and she would call, I would just take her along where ever I was. Once I was out digging in the garden and I had her on speaker phone 😂
Linda the recipe sounds yum, I would love to try it. I use my phone all the time. I much prefer to text or e mail, I don’t really enjoy talking on the phone
I have difficulty talking on the phone OR calling people
If I call, I never know if it is convenient. If someone calls me, I usually have to stop what I am doing. Oh and remember land lines where you were stuck to the wall? I used to have my ironing board next to the phone bc that was the only time I would iron clothes.
This is an absolutely beautiful update, Jeanne ❤️ I am happy George is home sweet home. I hope he is comfortable and feeling good. I hope both of you are resting. I hope family and friends are there to offer help with everything and anything. I am sure the chickens are missing your sweet voices too!
Gosh, what an exhausting experience. Big hugs to both of you.
I wish I could zip over and help.
I hope the weather is pleasant that you can stick your noses out or at least have some beautiful views of the blue sky and yard.
Both of you continue to be in our prayers.
I have been keeping pretty busy doing “a whole lot of nothing or something”
Tai-chi class was very interesting. I am in fairly perfect physical shape and as one class mate said after class “you are very flexible” (which is just heredity, my mom). It was challenging. For some reason I wound up right in front so could not view others, except the guy next to me – which is good, I have adhd 🥳 so this was good for focus. I had my eyes on the teacher the whole hour.
None of the moves were difficult for me, but I had a few balancing wobbles. I used to be a figure skater so I still have just a little bit of that alignment ability, but not a lot. I have not been exercising, so it was a bit painful remaining in a squat with legs apart for so long. It is a fun class. Not inexpensive but I will try a few classes and not give up yet. I want to focus on strength and balance.
Daddy’s state tax bill. Hubbs (Rex), three years ago, cleaned out daddy’s iMac with the huge screen onto some device: a big black box thing, external hard drive? so my nephew John could have grampas huge iMac. He filed his taxes online in 2022 with H and R Block. We have verification that he e filed his federal income taxes. We found the Virginia state taxes were done also online with H and R Block, but not signed and no proof that they were filed. We are just not sure, but we are gathering what information we can to give to our accountant that has done daddy’s taxes since his passing. Ladies, this was traumatic for me, going through these things. That is just my own soft heart.
Our plan is to gain as much information that we can, to give to the accountant
so he can call the tax ppl and negotiate the possible failure of a 99 year old man. Still, this letter the state of Va sent is valid, we just do not know if it is correct. It was sent to our home address, not daddy’s address at Ashby Ponds.
I am positive it is real, but not sure if it is correct, and how come it took them 4 years? Either case. I am not worried. Honestly, just crabby! We have the money in daddy’s account of course, but…. really? 4 years later.
Today I need to water the grass and gardens and tidy up in this house. I am kind of messy and leave stuff around all the time. I do keep a very clean house, just … messy. So, it is good to continually tame the clutter…. in case people come over.
Princess kitty is indoor only, and she spends a fair amount of time staring at various exterior walls in this house as if something is moving around in it….
I am not going to think about that.
Jeanne, I am so glad George is home, I know you are glad you can be there for him, he is in good hands for sure. Prayers continue.
Excellent news, Jeanne. And how rewarding to know that you have created a group of friends that can manage on their own.
The other day we were talking about fichus — here are 2 examples from Etsy

I am feeling better and got around some yesterday, watering the plants on the porches. I found that the light rains still washed the Deer Out and the deer had eaten a third of my flowers on one place so I had to go out and spray all those plants. Today I plan to do the laundry. Peyton is doing most of the cooking. I have no appetite but have to eat. When I feel better I could write some of my camping stories, y’all’s were so fun.
Happy to hear you are feeling better, Sissy.
Glad you are feeling better. It sure sounds like you and Peyton had a touch of some kind of virus. Maybe picked up at one of your social events so at least you can be pretty sure it wasn’t the food.
Thank you both, Linda and Barbara. Still taking the last meds and trying to get my energy back. I appreciate y’all for your kind words.
Very glad that you are on the road to recovery. Glad that Peyton is doing the cooking too. I’m sure that in a couple of days, you’ll be back in the pink once again. 🙂
I am glad you are feeling better Sissy.
Oh boy, that first day home after a hospital stay can be challenging, but I know that Jeanne and George, will manage it somehow. Were the tubes removed or will that happen later? I only ask because they are not comfortable. Hoping that being home will go smoothly. I’m picturing a kitchen full of casseroles and treats from the huge group of friends of Jeanne/George. Maybe Rebecca can fly down from PA to help out or Christopher can handle the mowing and chickens. If not happening, I hope that Jeanne, has friends to give her a hand with things. With the medical first and then meals, cleaning, and shopping not sure how she will have a moment to breathe. But, please Jeanne, do take some time for yourself and be sure to get some sleep to stay healthy. We’re all with you both. Get well soon George.
Yesterday, we got in a walk and a long chat with a friend on the route. Did a lot of sprinkling the beds looking for some seeds to pop. A few zinnias so far, but nothing else yet. The tomato plants are doing well and we have a few tiny ones already. Not sure if we are heading to the other house this morning or not, but the big news was that upon arrival there yesterday, we were greeted by Coco the cat! She has been in kitty confinement since she was cat napped but was back and everything was as usual. I’ve missed her so much. Total meows and rubs and well, I was so happy to see her once again. She came right inside just like usual and then out the back for some kibble. I didn’t really want to leave, but it was time, so she watched us pull away. We’ll be back this morning to do some yardwork. Hope that she will be around once again. It was such a happy day. 🙂
Hi Joy, Coco was catnapped??!! I must have missed that. I can’t seem to keep up every place. I’m very happy to hear she is back safe and sound.
Yes, Coco, disappeared. Her owner tracked her with her airtag and found out that she was down the hill at a short term rental. She went there and demanded that those staying there return Coco. They lied and said that she wasn’t there, but did return her collar. She knew that she was at the house, so she threatened them with a call to the police. Shortly thereafter, they called and said the cat was back so she picked her up, and she has been on a home time out for quite a few months now. All the neighbors are so happy that she is back. 🙂
Oh gosh Joy, I do recall you telling this story some months ago. Oh wowww. Yes, I remember you telling this story about these monstrous humans! this is good news.
Do the criminals still live down the street??
I’ve seen their cars, but no nothing about them. Sure hope that they have moved on.
Whoops, I meant to say Kristoffer. Sorry about the misspelling.
So very happy to hear that George is home. Yes, hopefully Kristoffer can be by to help. May not be possible for Rebecca to come.
I know I miss so much of the fellowship here, but between kitties in and out and all the other things I just can’t keep up.
Also in the midst of TNR with a friend as there are new kitties in the neighborhood and we don’t want any kittens, precious as they are.
So glad to hear that George is home. Since getting rest while in the hospital is kind of a joke, I’m sure he will rest much better at home where things are more quiet and the care is more personalized. Praying for both of you since I know you’re in this together and it’s hard on both of you.
I was thinking about what finally prompted David to get something done about his hearing. Our church choir director mentioned that a friend of hers had been hit by a car and killed because he was hard of hearing and did not do anything about it and that stuck with me. That story in itself did not prompt hubby to get something done but this did. The day in December that the Chorale was singing at the local bank David came along too. He sings the Christmas Carols with us and if we are not doing a Christmas concert that year we do more of them and not concert pieces which he can’t do. Our bank is on the main road through town and there is a light at the intersection there. We parked the car across the side street from the bank and were walking across when the light changed releasing the north and south traffic at the light on the main road. The sign for the city sits in the middle of the side street there so you can see a car turning right from where we were standing next to it but not left. Suddenly I heard a car revving behind me and something told me to grab hold of David and hold him back. Sure enough a sports car came tearing around the corner almost running into the bank when he saw us. David had not heard a thing that would clue him in about what was about to happen, and he would have stepped right into the path of the car. It took me awhile to stop shaking thinking about what could have happened. Definitely Divine Intervention.
I have PT this afternoon and I’m not looking forward to it. Hopefully it will not be as intense as the evaluation last week. Skyy came out Monday to help me with some things around here (he is amazing) but since Sean dropped him off and the guys were on their way out of town I had to take him home. I was invited to supper. That would have been great but they eat sitting on the couch with TV trays. The couch is not comfortable for me usually but their Catahoula hound who has too much energy and nowhere to run it off kept jumping off and on the couch. By the time I left I could barely walk and it hasn’t improved over the past two days. Hence I’m dreading having to move much at all.
Glad that your husband has the hearing aids now, but what a scary way to decide. Hope that your PT goes well today.
Jeanne, I am so glad George is home, I hope he makes a full recovery soon. I am sure the chooks miss him.
Sissy, I am glad you are feeling a little better.
Linda, It was fortunate that the drug they used saved your life even at the loss of most of your hearing. I wear hearing aids too but it is simply age related. When I was younger I had 20/20 vision now I struggle to see really small print and I know my sight is deteriorating but the last eye test I had they didn’t even change my glasses, apparently my loss of vision is cataracts. I am still ok to drive, I had to have my licence renewed last year when I turned 80, and had a medical and a vision test, it just isn’t what it was. Getting old isn’t always fun but it does beat the alternative!
Charlotte, my previous computer was a PC and it was very old when it crashed I bought this one in Jan 2019 and it isn’t Windows 11 compatible. I am trying to save enough to get a new one but it is the old story, as soon as you think you’re making ends meet, somebody moves the ends.
We had a little rain yesterday, not enough to do any good just enough to make it impossible to dry the washing. I don’t think it is going to be a good drying day today either. We will probably have to buy a dryer but there isn’t anywhere to put one. We’ll see what the weather does.
Have a good day everyone
I was wondering if you had looked at the stacking washer/dryers? They take up less space, but perhaps don’t have enough load capacity for all of you. Don’t know. What about a dryer put into the garage? Even if it means carrying loads out there, it would be so worth it to me. Growing up, we had a floor furnace and my mother put a wooden rack over it where the clothes dried nicely in the winter. Although, everything had to be ironed back then. Now, no ironing around here except if I’m sewing something. 🙂
Computers growing older…Mine was a retirement gift from my Brother (who passed away last July, at 82), and I am still using the same computer! I received it in 2014….it’s still working fine so far. My son-in-law had upgraded it to the newer Windows system several years ago, and I haven’t done much of anything since. I probably should back-up the many doll patterns that have been downloaded although I do occasionally go thru documents I no longer want to save and discard. I am on my third printer though since 2014! A printer is invaluable when it comes to printing out the saying or verses I like to use in my homemade greeting cards, and also reference photos for art and sewing projects, and printing out those doll patterns!
Thank you to everyone who shared their hearing loss experiences….sometimes you feel like you’re the only one in your own little circle that is going thru diminished hearing. I saw the Audiologist two weeks ago to see where my hearing loss is at now since the left ear is the one that is the worst. Turns out the hearing loss has remained the same as it was 6-7 months ago at the last test, with some loss noticed in the right ear as well. Been through drainage of fluid behind the eardrum, a tube inserted weeks later….tube came out on its on in about four months after that and now their is still a hole in the eardrum that has not completely closed up…although I have been told that there is the potential for an eardrum hole to close up or heal on its own, that can take weeks or even months.
So….I now have an appointment to look into hearing aids, come July. They did talk about doing the Cochlear implant behind the ear but I am not for surgery of any kind if possible….don’t handle anesthesia well and as my daughter has said….it seems like any surgeries I have had, it always seems like I end up with another issue from it, that needs to be dealt with. They did say that they can try several types of hearing aids, even one that would let me see what the Cochlear implant would sound like, at my next appt.
