Not exactly the way I wanted my weekend to go…

I had big plans for the weekend. It was my hubby’s birthday, but that was pretty much taken care of as we had dinner with some friends Saturday evening and then Kristoffer was cooking lunch for us Sunday. Both went well… dinner was wonderful at a new Italian restaurant and lunch was equally great… with him making homemade stroganoff. What could be better?

I think we had enough stroganoff everyone who reads my blog could have gotten some!!! That’s a HUGE iron skillet! I made a salad and had some Sister Schubert dinner rolls. It was yummy!

Oh, and some ice cream and cake. Look at this cake… I picked it up at the Food Pantry Friday because I knew it was going to be a busy weekend… Okay, who has an idea about this cake? Anyone?

There were 2 of them that came in the Food Pantry and we tried to guess what it was supposed to be… it was made to look like spaghetti noodles, (we thought), it had a fried egg, some chili peppers and something like turnips or greens… all done in buttercream icing. Was it supposed to be a “healthy” looking cake? did someone order this and then change their mind? Who knows… but my friend, Leann, said, “Oh, take it home to George, it has a chicken egg on top, he’ll love it!” So I did…

Then when it came time to serve the cake and ice cream, I showed it to Kristoffer and we tried guessing again… he looked something up on his phone and found a picture of Ramen noodles and it was almost like the top of this cake… the Ramen noodles had a fried egg, some parsley or basil, and some kind of greens and peppers on top. So we guessed someone wanted their cake to look like a dish of Ramen noodles cooked authentically… Kind of strange, I know, but we all had a good laugh. Apparently it’s an Asian dish that is well liked…

Backing up, so Friday evening, I dabbled in trying to make a pair of lace gloves for the Ruby Red Fashion Friends. I held a piece of paper up to Jame’s hand and drew a pattern out with the way the RRFF fingers are. Using just the idea from the other gloves I made with the stitching looking like the fingers separated, this was my first attempt..

They were too curved in the finger part… so I tried again and they were better with the fingers straight instead of curved…

… but not quite wide enough, so I was going to work on them Saturday and show them on Monday!

This is how tiny the pattern is…crazy, huh?

Wellllll… that didn’t happen!

I’m too embarrassed to tell you exactly how it happened, but let me just say, it was 6:30 Saturday morning and I was in the bed by myself. I got too close to the edge and slid off my mattress topper, hit the floor, and as I was going down I grabbed out with my right hand trying to hold on to anything…but I somehow hyper extended my thumb, or jammed it as it hit the wall and did this…

It’s not broken as I can still move it slightly, but it hurts like the dickens! I can’t do very much with it… I can’t hold a pair of scissors, or a needle and thread, no picking up a cup or plate, I can’t push my charger cord into my phone, it hurts to hold my toothbrush, or brush my hair, no wringing out the dish cloth, (my hubby did all the dishes after lunch!) no buttoning my pants, no opening a jar… and on and on… You don’t know HOW much you use your thumb until it’s out of commission…

I hope it goes away soon, so I can get back to sewing…

Disclaimer…This post was written without any help from my right thumb!!

I will see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

That certainly was an interesting-looking cake!! It looked like it might have been chocolate, or at least the base icing was chocolate?

You are making some progress on RRFF gloves!

Oh, ouch!! Your poor thumb! Have you been to the doctor yet? Even though you’re pretty sure nothing is broken, it might be a good idea to check it out, just in case. Ice packs should help, too, and some ibuprofen or other OTC pain relief might also be helpful. I’ll be praying for fast healing and minimal pain for you.

It looks like the food part of your weekend was good, Jeanne! That cake was really something! You never did mention what it was, chocolate? What a lot of icing on top, but a work of art!

Oh dear! You sure did it to your hand! That is right where I had trouble with my arthritis, and I had it during Christmas preparations! I could not write to sign Christmas cards, pick up anything, turn the water off and on, squeeze toothpaste out, , just like you say, anything! And that of course, was my left hand,…and I am left handed! I know exactly what you are going through, and I hope you get some relief soon!

Those tiny gloves look like you are getting the hang of it, and I wonder if my Betsy McCall could wear them too, since she can wear RRFF clothes. She currently does not have any dress gloves, except for winter wear, and they are furry!

Betsy can wear RRFF clothes. I had no idea. I’ll give it a try since there is one RRFF outfit I bought that I don’t like the fit on that doll so maybe it will suit Betsy better. Thanks for the information.

Oh, no, Jeanne, prayers for a quick relief! Other than eye site I can’t think of anything worse for a seamstress than hand injury! I am getting arthritis in both hands but just barely, hoping that hand sewing, which is what I love, will keep the old Arthur at bay.
Take care and let it rest and get well soon!

Having lived in Japan for three years, I knew exactly what the cake design was: A bowl of ramen. I think the orange things are tiny baby carrots as Japanese cuisine does go in for hot peppers. Well done.

Your hand looks thoroughly bruised. Perhaps an ice pack wrapped in a light cloth would help without freezing the skin. A trip to a clinic might be in order to have it checked out for displacement. This is going to take a while to recover from. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

That’s supposed to be “does not” go in for . . . There are sound effects of slurping that go on in a ramen restaurant as the noodles are eaten using chopsticks. Then pick up the bowl to finish off the rest of the broth!

Looks like a lot of carbs for the weekend at your place. Pretty yummy I’m sure. I’m sure you’ll make up for it this week though. With your thumb out of commission, maybe some walking will be in order? Not much else you can do except ice and hope for a quick recovery. And you didn’t even break a nail? Glad you didn’t have any other injuries. Really makes one respect the use of our appendages. Now that is going to be a great story to tell when people ask how you were injured.
The latest gloves are adorable. I would love to see a pair on Linda’s Betsy at some point. She is always so well dressed for Easter, and always.
Well, it will be corned beef sandwiches on rye for lunch today. Can’t wait. I think the Costco corned beef we had last night is the best we have ever had. Delicious. We’ll be heading out for a walk soon. Have to burn off those calories from last night’s green day celebration. 🙂
    Take care, Jeanne.

Oh no! The description o f your ‘sports injury’ had me cringing in sympathy. 🙏ing it’ll be better soon!😥

Ouch! I know that has to hurt. I know what it’s like not being able to use your thumb, especially if you are right-handed. After I had my car accident a few years ago I could not use my right hand at all for about three weeks. The moon roof of my car broke in pieces and cut the back of my head and my right hand just missing the tendon on my index finger. Because it was such a used area my hand surgeon made sure my whole hand was immobile so it would heal well, which it did. I was sure glad to get the use of my right hand back. Thankfully I don’t have arthritis in my hands, seems to be more in my back, but any time you can’t fully use your hands for any reason is a difficult time.

I love the cake. Got any pictures of a piece after you cut the cake? It looks like a lot of icing on that cake. I love it.

Stroganoff!!! We love it so much that my son and dil use it to entice us to baby sit for the grandkids. Not really necessary but we pretend. They are going out for their anniversary Saturday and we will be going to their place in the mid-afternoon. She makes wonderful stroganoff and has that ready for our dinner. Skyy and I cook the noodles and finish things up while Sean and Dionne are off celebrating, usually at a restaurant they haven’t tried before. Seeing the pictures of the stroganoff makes me more impatient than ever for Saturday.

I had a bit of a shocker yesterday. It was a dolly shocker but that can be very traumatic for an enthusiast. I few years ago when I bought my two Boneka dolls I went to doll shoe sites (usually Deb’s Adorables or Jujus Dolly Mall) and bought them a few pairs of shoes with no trouble at all. Yesterday I was looking for some different shoes to go with their new Easter outfits and could not find one pair on either site. I did a search of the internet and all I could find were ones made in Poland for $25.00 a pair. They were cute but I couldn’t afford that. I did a search of the internet and checked some other sites I use for things like that but could find nothing. I know the Boneka dolls are popular but what happened to all their shoes?! Anyone have any ideas where I can look next?

    1. Debbie in North Carolina

Hi Barbara, catching up on all the posts and I saw your dilemma about Boneka shoes. Have you tried Boneka Traditions online website. They also sell on eBay but I always look at their official site which is in Germany. They have everything for Boneka and many other size dolls. I don’t think they sell their shoes for $25. Good luck!

      1. Joy in northern CA

Yes, I would have advised the same Boneka online. But, if you have the shoe size in mm you can look on Ebay as well. 🙂

    2. Joy in northern CA

Kind of late for you, but I think they wear 38mm. So search it on Ebay. Also ask Juju’s and Debs. Hope this helps.

That looks like interesting cake! One’s mind might think they are eating noodles, but their tastebuds are saying something else.

I hope your poor hand gets better soon!

On Friday I felt someone kicking me, and on Saturday it was confirmed- there is a new little baby on the way!! I was pregnant for quite a while and didn’t even realize it- thought my metabolism might be slowing down or something. My best guess is the end of July for the appearance. It didn’t seem like any boys would be coming, so in order to make room in the shed, I tried to get rid of all the boy clothes. We don’t know the gender yet, but hope to soon. Just wanted to let you know. 🙂 hope to think if a name faster this time! Yikes.

Dear Karen, how wonderful! I am so happy for you.

My favorite boy name is David.

    2. Charlotte Trayer

Congratulations, Karen! That baby is fortunate to be coming into such a wonderful family!

I’m joining the people who say to get it checked out so you’ll know for sure how best to treat it. You want the least inconvenience and the shortest healing time.

I slid out of bed once. I didn’t hurt myself but there was the problem of standing up. I had to scoot into the dining room, turn a chair around, kneel in front of it, grab the back, lean on my forearms, get one foot on the floor, press down hard with my arms, and stand up, all in the dark. I felt so smart. I do have a help button to call an ambulance, but wouldn’t you rather solve your own problems?

Ice slows circulation, warmth increases it. You need to know which will help your thumb. By now you’ve probably been to see a doctor and are home, exhausted. But you almost certainly have good leftovers and part of a ramen cake.

Susette is right about the slurping. And it must be done loudly but neatly — no napkins in the restaurant where I was.

  10. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear about your thumb. Do rest it.

Don’t worry about us if you need to take a break for a few days. We can talk among ourselves.

  11. Debbie in North Carolina

I am glad George’s birthday was a success. I vote for letting a doctor have a look. I cracked two ribs on the foot board of the bed a few years ago. We changed our 9 inch box springs for a 5 inch box to lower the height of the bed.

    Feel better soon!

  12. You poor thing! That thumb looks really painful. Both my husband and I have fallen out of bed in exactly the way you described, but neither one of us got hurt. I’ll say a prayer for your thumb,so you can get back to those beautiful gloves.
