How to decorate a hat for the American Girl dolls…

Well, first of all, to decorate a doll’s hat, you have to have LOTS of STUFF! Lots of ribbons, flowers, leaves, sprigs of “things”, and LOTS of patience! This was an all day affair! Well, at least a half a day! I won’t count the time I spent in Hobby Lobby searching for the right “stuff!”

I ended up buying 2 packages of paper flowers, a roll of ribbon, a pack of 8 colors of velvet ribbons, besides the few things I had at home.

Poor Felicity was draped with so many different colors of ribbons and had flowers plopped on her hat and leaned against her dress, and she was starting to rebel. “Just pick something!” I enlisted my hubby’s opinion and then I just decided…

But here are a few pictures just for fun…

This was the brown wired ribbon I had already draped over her head, but it was too dark and looked black, no matter how I tried it… It was iridescent and just wasn’t cooperating with the brown in her dress… You can see the flowers I bought… one package of golds and creams and the other a pretty rusty/brick red. The pack of colorful ribbons were velvet, but were too narrow and the gold one on the end, was too blah next to the straw hat. The roll of rust looking ribbon was a velvet ribbon but too heavy and it was frayed on the edges and just didn’t look right.

I dug in my ribbons drawer a little deeper and found these 3 rayon ribbons… and draped them over Felicity’s hat…

Here is the brown ribbon… it just wasn’t working… in my pictures it looks like it “should” work, but even up close, it looked black.

Here are my rayon ribbons with the new flowers I bought…

I dug in another box I had and found a piece of brown trim I bought at the Quilt Show in Paducah and liked it, but it wasn’t right for a tie…

I finally narrowed it down to the rust rayon ribbon without the brown trim I had bought… and just started…

…and somehow an hour or so later, this turned out…

Felicity was a happy camper…

Here are a few closeups of the hat…

…and one more…

Now I just have to get a round eared cap made and we’ll be set! Hopefully tomorrow!

I hope I picked what you would have picked… I knew if I asked for your opinions, with this many choices, I still wouldn’t know what to do!

I will see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, I’m so glad you chose the rust ribbon and the light gold flowers (mostly); that was what I would have done, too. And you did have some brown tulle that you could use under the flowers; I really like that look. I can see that Felicity loves it, too!

    1. Bingo! That is perfect! Just the right combination and size. This will be another lovely combo. Hats always complete the look😉

You picked exactly the right things, Jeanne! Yes, I see that the brown was too dark and distracting. The flowers are just lovely, and the netting a surprise that added a bit of sophistication! You did a wonderful job!

  3. I have always tried to do flowers on hats and bonnets, but nothing ever looked good to me! You just taught me something. I will use the paper flowers from now on! Thank you so much for teaching this old dog a new trick!

Oh yes, Madame Jeanne, your ribbon pick is perfect. The only one I thought would work. Ha ha. And I love the netting surprise. Trey Chic! Looking forward to photos. Is it too cold for the outdoors?
    Have fun today everyone. 🙂

I noticed that Kathie! Are you going to the very bottom to make a comment? I noticed my little quilt square is different today than it normally is. Wonder what is going on?

      1. Hi… yes Inca…I’m really checking it every time now even did a screen print the other day that shows I was in the right place🫣Jeanne said it happens to others as well. 🤔

Dear Jeanne, oh my goodness, the hat is amazing! You definitely have the styling touch.

You could easily make hats and fascinators for dolls and for ladies and sell them.
