It’s back to making doll jeans again… for the Ruby Red Fashion Friends

BREAKING NEWS! My hubby got the “first fruits” from his garden today…some are tiny and some are BIG! :o)

I thought I’d have more time to sew today but my hubby needed to go to Menard’s in a town 25 miles away… but he had to stop at the church on the way there, and I had to help him with putting on a new door lock… He could do it by himself, but he had some weirdo set of locks that needed 3 hands to get the screws in…

Well, the visit to Menard’s led to Sam’s and Renew, a thrift store, a fence company, and a storm door place. I think we got home at 4:30! UGH! I always seem to be on the hunt for more time in my day. I did answer some of the comments today while he was in the church working on a window.

Okay, enough on that… I planned on making Violette and fun little pantskirt, like I made a million of back in the 70’s, when I was in high school. I looked up several ideas in my 1970’s pattern book, and had something in mind. However when I got home, I remembered ALL those different jeans I had started for James, when I was trying to perfect my pattern. I thought maybe there was something in the lot I could finish in a flash… I worked on a few different pair, but I’ll show you the results of my limited sewing time…

I found this light blue denim pair in the stash and liked the color with Violette’s top, but these were just too tight to consider finishing…

So I thought maybe I’d just cut out a pair, making them slightly wider at the sides and see what happened…

They’re okay, but not perfect… especially in the behind area!

So I moved onto another pair…

This pair was all finished, but it seemed a little big in the waist to be used with a crop top…

This pair was finished too… but one of the legs seems twisted on this pair…

When I tried this pair on Violette, James perked his head up and said, “Hey, those are MY JEANS!” He’s right… I made them for him to go with the blue plaid shirt that I’ve never listed YET! So I guess I better keep them for James…

Which brings me to my last pair that I’m working on. These look pretty nice on Violette, but the waistband was too high, so I’ve taken it off and lowered the rise of the jeans… I’ll see if I can’t get them finished tomorrow. If they look okay with the new waistband, I think they might be the winner!

I have SO many pattern pieces it’s crazy. I need to spend some time weeding out the pieces that are too baggy in the legs, or the seat or have too high of a waist on them. But if I spend time doing that, it will cut into my sewing time…

Oh well, somehow things get finished around here…not as quickly as I’d like, but eventually!

I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

The cucumbers look wonderful, but you’re not going to get much of a salad out of that one cherry tomato, I’m afraid!! Haha. I’m sure there will be more–LOTS more–in the coming weeks, though.

My goodness, you went thru a Lot to get some good jeans for Violette!! They will be so cute with that cropped top, though. A different-styled top out of the floral fabric would be nice with them, too–maybe a peasant style? Just a thought.

I have Russell out of the box, and wigged and dressed. He’s sitting here in the kitchen with me, waiting to have his picture taken! I told him we had to wait until daylight, and it was time to get some sleep now. The girls will be excited to see him when they wake up in the morning!

Good luck on your dolly capers, Joy!

Dear Charlotte, I am glad Russell is out of the box.

Charlotte Noelle says she hopes you gave him some cookies and milk while he is waiting (smile).

Love those cucumbers, Jeanne, and that tiny cherry tomato would work with the RRFF dolls salad! πŸ˜‰ Homegrown varieties are always the best!

I like the jeans with the crop top a lot better than the other material you had yesterday, although the material itself was darling, just not paired with the polka dot top. A cute tie made of the dotted material would work to tie around Violet’s curly locks! The jeans work very well, and some cute flip flops woud be perfect too!

Yes, maybe another crop top like Charlotte mentioned, of the daisy print, would work also. You do have a bunch of possibilities there! Jean shorts too! I don’t think you have ever made any, but maybe I am wrong. I do know one thing, when we get those hot, humid days of summer, I don’t even want to look at a pair of jeans, way too hot!! What might be cute too, is a pair of shorts, and an overskirt that buttons down the front, left open.

I’m getting way ahead of myself, so I had better stop!

Like Joy mentioned farther down, I too, like the light colored jeans for summer. They could be cute shorts!

  3. I vote vote for the low-rise jeans. Too bad the light blue can’t be used with the crop top, they .look so nice together.
That was so nice of hubby to grow tomatoes for the dollies, my Gigi wants a sandwich!

First of all, very jealous of the cukes and baby cherry tomato. Looks like George, has won the first veggie contest again. πŸ™‚
As to the jeans, there is nothing so great as a correctly fitting pair. I do prefer the lighter blue and the tighter fit of the twisted leg pair. The final pair really fits nicely, even though I like them tighter. Some of my boys can definitely use these. πŸ™‚
The dollies are in the house! What a day. Thought the expected doll packages would make a morning delivery as it said between 8:30 and 10:30. Figured I was a dead duck. So, we went for a walk. Came home. No packages. Planned to go to Costco to refill the car after the trip to visit grands, so headed there. Also needed a few things. Picked up the items we needed and headed to the Trader Joe’s near there. Did a quick pick up as we had our lunch, Costco hot dogs, in the car. Got home. No packages. Checked online. Nope had not been delivered. Carried on and eventually headed out on a few more errands. Returned. Still no packages. Finally, gave up and headed out to do my daily blackberry hacking in the shade. Was busy. Charlotte, the cat next door, kept me company. Filled the can about 3/4 and had told other person to call me in at 5:00 or so. Got the call. Finished up and headed inside as I wanted to make some chicken cacciatore. So great to have packs of leftover chicken in the freezer. Anyway, I peeked out the bedroom window and did not see any packages on the porch. Other person was in the living room working on something. Didn’t want to disturb him. News on. I was busy making fruit salad. Finally, saw the UPS truck headed down on our side of the street. Thought it would stop. But, nope, kept going. First truck I’ve seen all day. Was stirring the sauce and chicken and finished the fruit salad. Then, I saw the UPS truck heading back up the hill. And it didn’t stop, but I did see the driver staring at our house. So, where are the packages? Oh no. Probably delivered to the wrong house yet again. Went into the bedroom to see if they may have been dropped across the street. Nope. Happened to glance at our porch, and there were two dolly boxes on the mat. How did they get there? I didn’t see or hear the truck even stop. But, there they were. Magical! And other person was smack dab in the living room near the door still working. He got up. But, only went into the office for sticky notes. Darn. Finished my contribution towards dinner and sat down for the rest of the news. I suggested that other person might want to make salad? He always does. So, he said yes, and got up. So hoped that he didn’t want to go out the front door to sniff the air or something. He went into the kitchen. Then, I said, don’t forget to wash your hands. Ah ha. That did it. He does not like to wash in the kitchen sink. Why, I don’t know. So, he headed towards the bedroom. I seized the moment. Jumped up and carefully opened the door. Grabbed both boxes off the mat. Closed the door and whisked the boxes to the doll room. No time to take them across the house. All done so quickly that I was back on the couch before other person returned. πŸ™‚ So, in the doll room both boxes remain. Two poor dollies stuffed in their suffocating cardboard awaiting their new guardian to free them. But, I’m safe. πŸ™‚

Dear Joy, I was holding my breath through the whole narration. Oh my goodness you are an amazing storyteller. I think you could do dolly stand up or something! Wow!

    2. Laura in Ohio

Great job, Joy, on getting those dollies in. If one is Alma I so want to know what the surprise is. I know she’s supposed to mimic Anne of Green Gables, but with blue eyes instead of Anne’s green. I think we need to rename you Cinnamon as successful as you are becoming with your Dolly Missions. πŸ™‚

      1. Joy in northern CA

Yes, one of the dolls was Alma. Her outfit is amazing. Such detail. And the surprise is a lovely sweater/jacket. Very cute. πŸ™‚

Loved the new segment of “Dolls of our Lives” or whatever you call it. I was on the edge of my seat. Hopefully the stars of this episode will make it out of their boxes real soon.

  5. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, thanks for sharing the produce photos. I thought it was cute when you said big and small. That’s exactly what they were (smile).

I liked the darker jeans best. But your sweet dolly will nice in either kind.

  6. Laura in Ohio

In general I like dark jeans more , but for summer with crop tops jeans seem hot. The twisted leg pair seems to go best with this top and that fabric in shorts would be even better.

George’s cucumbers and tiny cherry tomato look great. All we’ve harvested so far is blueberries, parsley, and the garlic scapes.

  7. Barbara in SE Texas

Yummy! I love fresh cucumbers. What a darling cherry tomato. Sean and Dionne are the gardeners here. They had so many Roma tomatoes that she made tomato sauce and then turned it into spaghetti sauce. Sean said it was great.

I like the jeans, both light and dark. I think jeans look great with a crop top but would probably opt for shorts or a skort here. Just the thought of jeans makes me overheat. I think the blue fabric in another top would be great to go with the jeans.

We had quite a rainstorm last evening. I was glad to see that because my crepe myrtle is blooming profusely and to keep it that way I was about to have to water it. The storm did lower our temps for the day to 92 but we still have a feels like of 100. We have a few over 100 days coming up for actual temps. Not looking forward to that. A few years ago we had a summer with no days over 92. It was really quite a nice summer. Haven’t seen that since.

Dorothy in PA and the World I keep the Bethlehem weather on my home page. Great temps so far. Wish I were there to enjoy them.

    1. Joy in northern CA

Can’t imagine the heat lowered to only 92, but feeling like 100. Reminds me of the horrible heat we had last year that I do not want to remember.
How is the dolly pool coming along? Can’t wait to see it. πŸ™‚

    2. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Barbara, I wish you were able to visit also. You would only be 1 1/2 hours away from where I am. We will definitely have to plan something virtual. Maybe a Sofa Sisters Zoom gathering in the Fall. Until then, sending hugs your way.

  8. Susette from Southern California

I had a somewhat similar experience as Joy did while waiting for Russell to arrive. Days ago I got a message that he would be delivered on Wednesday, June 21. Then the time was given as between 10 am – 2 pm. Then it went to 2:15 – 6:15 pm. I checked the community mailbox at 6 pm even though I didn’t think the box would fit and they had always been on the doorstep. No sooner got back to the house than the doorbell rang at 6:06, just under the wire. No hiding boxes here, though, just staying home all day!

The boys are already borrowing clothes from each other and planning a camping trip to Big Sur to go hiking but close to the beach for surfing πŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ as well. Russell really does look remarkably like my grandson KrishπŸ₯°!

    1. Joy in northern CA

Glad you had success with Russell. Those delivery times always floor me. And a camping trip for the boys is a great idea. The Russell here said he definitely wants to go hiking. So, we’ll see. πŸ™‚

  9. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

Good morning all. You’ll be glad to know I am home and sleeping in my own bed. I am still in some pain and sleeping is not very comfortable. I usually sleep on my side but have arthritis in my left shoulder so can’t sleep on that side for too long but of course can’t sleep on my right hip (the new one) which is what I usually do. Ended up on my back which I don’t like much. On a much more positive note Ashley, who can be very difficult and who doesn’t appear to like me much sometimes, was fussing around me like a little mother hen! On a less positive note, my poor dog, who missed me terribly while I was in hospital now finds I can’t cuddle him on my knee and he hates the walker that I have to use to get around. Life just isn’t the same for him.

Jeanne I know you were trying to save time trying on James’ ‘fails’, but I think you might have been quicker drafting a new pattern LOL. I’m inclined to agree with Linda, a cute pair of shorts with an overskirt would look great. Congratulations on a great auction so far. Must be a lot of Ten Pings out there who have special invitations to July 4th activities.

Joy I love your Dolly Capers stories, you should have been a novelist.

    Have a great day everyone.

    1. Joy in northern CA

Loved your post. Nice about Ashley. And poor pup. I’m sure he is thrilled that you are home even though he can’t have as much of you as he wishes. I can just see him attacking the walker. Hope he’s getting some treats. πŸ™‚
So glad you’re home and progressing. Take care.

    2. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Anne, we are rejoicing here on the sofa. We are so glad that you are home.
