Why NOT have 3 separate Christmas pieces for American Girl Molly?

I think it was Joy who mentioned she was hoping to have a skirt, blouse and vest…all separate pieces and I thought about that for a minute and decided, “why not?” So I’m making them all separate, so the winner can wear them with different things… The white blouse will go with anything… the red plaid skirt might look great with a sweater or a blazer, and the vest could be worn with lots of different pieces…

So far, I only have 2 pieces finished… but I’m working on the vest…

I finished the blouse first and searched high and low for the same trim around the neckline of the one I made back in 2015, but could not find a piece even 6″ long, which was probably all I needed…here was that trim…

I tried 2 times to gather up this tiny trim I used on the sleeves and use it around the neckline…

…but it was too tiny to get my gathers evenly distributed and it was too delicate… it needed to be a lace with a little bit of body to it…

I tried to gather this piece and get it to stand up, but it was actually too tall, or Molly’s neck was too short… :o)
I also didn’t like the look of the darker white around the lace where there were a couple layers…

So I finally ended up just pressing it down and tacking it in place at the back of the neck…

Here’s a picture a little bit farther away…

The snaps have been sewn down the back and it’s been hemmed… well, actually I used the lace from the sleeves to make a nice finish around the tail of the blouse…

I’m going to add a little black bow at the neck since the 40’s did that a LOT!

Then I turned my attention to the skirt and it went together pretty quickly… I’m going to have it close with Velcro on the back waistband because I tried it on 3 different girls of mine and got 3 different lengths. With Velcro, the winner should be able to find a happy medium for the doll she has.

I’m also leaving the skirt open in the back all the way to the hem…(like a wrap) It just makes it easier to put on the dolls!

I’m going to make her that black vest, but I’m wondering if it should be pinwale corduroy or velveteen? The one I made in 2015, I used a crushed velvet that sort of has crushed “rows” in it… I have some of it left… Here is a picture of the vest on the 2015 dress…

Well, that was my sewing for the weekend… anyone else do any sewing?

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I’m so glad you are making this as three separate pieces; that’s what I had when I was a girl, separate pieces (although I grew up mostly in the 50s, being born in 1946). And my vest was CORDUROY, and that’s what I vote for!! I love pinwale corduroy, and it does make a nice vest, which can be worn with both dressy and more casual things. The velour might be a little limiting in that regard, being a dressier fabric.

I love the trim you used on the neck of Molly’s blouse, and especially the way it lays around the neck. Stand-up lace can be itchy! This looks soft and comfortable.

That plaid sure does make a pretty skirt! I’m sure she’ll have a petticoat (maybe a sparkly one?) to go underneath, too. I like that you have taken into account the different sizes that AG dolls can be. Even among just the older ones, size could vary a bit depending on who stuffed the body. My AbbyRose, for example, has a pretty good-sized tushy!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Jeanne, I really like the way the lace stands up on the new blouse! It’s different and it’s nice that you can change up the patterns so that they are two separate creations. I also want the vest to be corduroy, and maybe have it come to two points in front at the bottom. No ribbon sash this time like the first dress. It will be the perfect accewssory that she can wear with other skirts, blouses and even slacks.

The skirt already stands out so nicely, I am wondering if there isn’t already a slip there! That’s great that you made the skirt adjustable for different wizes of waists. I have a variety too!

Seems like pretty red ribbons for Molly’s braids are all she needs to make this a winner! Maybe also one longer ribbon for a doll who doesn’t wear braids. My Ruthie would look stunning in this, but she wears her hair down, so having a ribbon long enough to tie around her hair would be a good idea too.

Is anyone getting their dolls ready for Halloween?

Good morning Ladies, I see that Linda is wondering about dressing our dolls for Halloween. Just got busy with this over the weekend. Set up my backdrop and added a few decorations to it. I have three of the dolls in my own construction of strictly Halloween colors and costumes; a black and purple toned long skirted witch with a purchased headband witch hat, a pumpkin complete with tights, costume, sparkly neck leaf and pumpkin stem hat, and a princess witch with a short orange sparkly skirt, princess style top, striped tights with a pull on beanie hat with a sparkly bat pin attached. These 3 dolls are Target Our Generation girls. My AG Julie is dressed in all out 60’s looking hippie style, bell bottoms, brown flowered blouse, shaggy fur vest, large felt floppy hat, Lennon sunglasses and carrying a guitar. I received a Target Our Generation boy doll from my daughters for a great surprise birthday gift this year. He’s dressed as a steam punk aviator. I used a dog costume aviator cap complete with goggles from the store, so cute and nicely made. I sewed him jodhpur pants, muslin shirt, leather vest with fold back collar decorated with steam punk style embellishments. He also got brown leather steam punk boots. My girls went wild when I sent them pics of the dolls Halloween costumes. I have to admit, they really look festive.

Love the blouse on Molly. She might even be able to wear it with some shorts or overalls next summer. All the pieces look great. Love that little black bow. I probably would prefer velveteen for the vest. So close to velvet, but easier to sew. Has Molly mentioned her preference? ๐Ÿ™‚
I hope Doreen is able to send you the photos of her Halloween grouping. I’d love to see it.
No sewing around here this weekend. Ended up doing more hedge whacking and ivy pulling. Lots more to go as well as doing the playhouse roof. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Jeanne, I love the way you are doing it in three separate pieces. I like the lace that you used for her neck too. I agree it does look soft. And the idea of making the vest in the corduroy, it will be beautiful.

I too hope Doreen sends a photo so we can all see her dolls dressed up for Halloween.

I got one doll dressed for Halloween. Maybe I can get more done, will have to see.

Joy, you are really working hard on yard work. I just yesterday ordered some seeds and a plant from Burpee.

Good for you on the seeds. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have some freesia bulbs from a neighbor to plant if that counts. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Great idea making separate pieces. I love the lace lying down at the neckline. My vote for the vest is velveteen.

Dear Jeanne, the blouse is very pretty. I always want adult versions of your lovely outfits (laugh). I need to find a Jeanne who sews for people since I don’t sew (smile).

  8. Kind of late to ad my 2 cents โ€ฆ..๐Ÿ˜‰. The lace at the neck looks nice laying down and the narrow as a finish is so pretty. Either fabric would make a nice vest but as Charlotte said the corduroy can be casual too.
Yes please take pics of your dolls for Halloween Doreen.๐ŸŽƒ
Hope that plaid will be some kind of hair accessory๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ
