How about a break from the roof/house/siding posts for a while…

I have decided to give all my little (and some big) jobs that still need to be done a rest. This will be my last post on all these kinds of things for a while… This is supposed to be a dolly blog and caulking and putting up siding and painting screw heads and pulling out nails can only be interesting for so long… even I have reached the point of NO MORE! When I get enough stuff done and can show it all in one post, I will do that, but this could go on for weeks, and it probably will… so today’s post will be the last of this for a while…

We have to order a small custom made window for the front of our house, way up high in the eaves, because the louvers broke in it and we decided we would rather have a paned window up there…

This morning, before it got TOO hot, we decided to work on the section at the end of our porch, because it was in the shade… this is what it looked like before… this picture was taken when my hubby and Kristoffer were taking down the chimney.

The roofers did a nice job of roofing above and below it, but that little triangle piece of siding needed some TLC. It was a problem area of leaking and my hubby had put black Flex Seal on the area where it was leaking, (the crack) and it just looked awful next to our new roof. It has a little short section of gutter up there too… We had already taken down the siding in this area and it looked like this.

They put Ice and Water Shield all over the porch area and ran it up on the wall a few inches, then added the flashing… so it shouldn’t ever leak again…

So we had to do some “brainstorming” again and try to come up with a plan that would let the water flow down the J-Channel, where the siding sits in at the bottom and still look nice… We started with some insulation…

Then the J-Channel…

Then my hubby fashioned 3 pieces of J-channel together to hold the triangle piece of siding up on this side and fit the siding from the other side into it… Of course CAULK was used… He even cut a small piece of the tin flashing to fill in that hole that was there before…

I am going to use some WHITE Flex Seal and paint the area my hubby got black on the white siding…

This is how we fixed it… the gutter isn’t up there yet… I’m going to paint it before we put it back up there…

My hubby wanted to caulk a crack that was at the bottom of this vent…

While he was caulking I went down the ladder and got a Magic Eraser to see if it would take off some of the marks on the white trim that the roofers had gotten on there… YES…it worked wonderfully, taking off lots of bug spots and more…

I decided to try it on the flashing along the edges of the siding we replaced a few weeks ago… this area…

There were all these little gray spots… not sure if they were just from the weather or maybe light mold… but they looked like this…

…and now they look like this… and I didn’t even do a great job… I was just scrubbing around a little bit…

We finished putting the starter strip at the bottom of that same area I was working on… and it’s ALL done except I need to paint 3 screw heads that we used at the bottom…

After I got back from working at the Food Pantry, I was working on getting some dinner made, when all of a sudden my hubby started laughing… I turned around and he said, “I created a centerpiece for dinner…do you like it?” It was a bucket with all his tubes of caulk he had used today… He brought them inside and set them on the table and decided to be a little bit funny… I had to snap a picture… It’s what I do! :o)

Oh, just one more picture… I was sitting up on the roof, while he was caulking and I looked over and saw one of the hens standing on the bricks in the pool…Maybe they’ll get in it one of these days…

Okay, that’s it for now… I’ll give you an update when I get enough of these small little things done…

I hope all the FATHER’s out there have a wonderful Father’s Day… We plan to have a nice lunch with the kids…

See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Charlotte Trayer, north of Seattle,

Your finishing touches are wonderful, and look so professional, Jeanne!! Best of all, no more water leaks!!

Well, that Was kind of funny, the centerpiece, I mean. At least it was in colors that sort of went with your tablecloth!!

Now that one hen has tried the bricks in the pool, maybe others will, too.

Thanks to those who commented on Ron’s latest ER visit. He’s doing okay. We think it’s his congestive heart failure–the chest x-ray did show some fluid on his lungs. He has a follow-up appt. with his GP next Wed., so we shall see. And he already has an appt. set up for an echocardiogram and follow-up with his cardiologist, but that’s next month.

I got a dress cut out for my new Maya last night. I had one print chosen, but decided to go with the tone-on-tone deep pink Tutti-frutti instead, as there are more possibilities for trims. (Tutti-frutti is a brand of poly/cotton plisse’; I used to use it for dresses and things for our granddaughter, so I have plenty of leftovers!)

I love to see that the two of you keep going until things are done! There is no stopping you now, hot weather or no! I hope we all get rain soon though, things are drying up and flowers are wilting! Your roof looks wonderful and all those little touches you are doing now won’t be noticed much in the end, but if they weren’t done, it would make the point of the roof useless! It looks so neat and profieeionally done…..and it is!

The idea of a window replacing the louvers is a great idea! Is that a room in the attic there or just a storage area? I know that you mentioned Kristoffer had a room up there somewhere.

I think your chicken is getting the idea of getting cool!

George needs a rest on Father’s Day and maybe a nice cake for all his efforts!

You refer to this as a dolly blog but I think of it as a life blog. There are women in the news for good reasons and bad, there are women in fiction falling in love or solving murders or being discouraged by life, and then there’s Jeanne Marie being real. Jeanne Marie has a lovely house because she and George have worked and worked on it. She takes nice vacations, usually close to home. She goes to antique and fabric stores, entertains her gifted siblings, loves her grown up children, helps endless friends and church members, and fixes endless meals and treats for family, friends, and church. Jeanne Marie may be busier than a lot of us, but she’s a real person living a real American life and a nice, balanced picture of real (and interesting) life. One survey of non-Americans indicated they thought Las Vegas represented us. Jeanne does a much better job.

MARILYN, you said it all so beautifully. Thank you.

JEANNE, I am glad you are going to be able to take a little break, but you and George are truly most remarkable pair. As for the centerpiece, he clearly has a very cute sense of humor. That sure helps in life. Your home is really becoming a great showpiece.

CHARLOTTE, we all are wishing the best for you and Ron. This is tough stuff to go through.

I have been busy while away ordering some fun things and ordering some RRFF dolls, clothes. The beat goes on. First half of family vacation in NH has gone so well. The big challenge starts today when we are ALL together for this next week on a lake. All sons, wives, grandkids and granddog. Hopping there will be no “undercurrents” to spoil it. With family, you never know. Fingers are crossed!

    My best to you all!

Now maybe that’s why they are so hesitant to hop in the pool, they need bikinis!🤣

What a great idea! Maybe you can use chicken print fabric to carry on the theme. 🙂

Absolutely love the exquisite centerpiece. Good job George.
Is the adventurous chicken the same one that George plunked into the pool? If not, perhaps she was watching. 🙂 or not and is happily discovering a floating bug. 🙂
I’m glad you’re installing a window in the attic. We have one in ours at the other house. It is nice to have light coming in up there.
I think all of the roof finishing details will make a huge difference. The rain will now drain away so nicely and hopefully, never enter the house again.
We’re heading down to see the grands tomorrow. Their house remodel is complete except for a cooktop and 1/2 bath vanity. Like everyone else trying to remodel or build, these things are on order (shortages everywhere) and hopefully will eventually arrive.
As to week three of the Sew Along, I’m still doing the hand stitching of the bias trim. I suspect more will be accomplished today as it is supposed to be cooler both outside and inside. 🙂
    Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

I loved Marilyn’s description of a real American woman and her family. I love reading the descriptions of your endeavors because I’d rather read about you’re doing them than me having to do them. My youthful energy seems to have left me awhile back but you are still going strong and nothing seems to deter you and George from seeing what needs to be done and doing it. Problem here is nothing much needed doing until we both got to the age where doing it is not quite so easy, like removing the sun pipe that was installed so easily years ago but uninstalling it and repairing the roof and the ceiling of my sewing room seems like an “I really don’t want to have to do that” kind of job these days. And with the hot summer months upon us, it’s hard to do anything except routine yard maintenance and that mostly on a riding mower.

With a hubby who’s always been a DIY kind of guy not being able to do a lot of things is hard on him and paying someone to do something he knows he should be able to do himself is nearly impossible. Hopefully as the weather cools some of the outside have-tos will get done. In the meantime, as soon as the out-of-town job gets finished, my bathroom vanity will be completed and the new laminate flooring will be put down in the bathroom and the vanity installed with my new, beautiful black sinks and a vanity with lots of drawers. It will be inconvenient for a couple days but so much worth it.

Charlotte I’m praying that all will be well with Ron. I know what it’s like to have these trips to the ER. I remember after David had his heart surgery he woke me up (I was sleeping in my recliner next to him at the time) and told me he could not sleep. He had checked his blood pressure and it was through the roof. He did not want me to call 911 because he did not want to go to the hospital in an ambulance. So at 5 a.m. I got dressed and drove him to the ER at the hospital where he had his surgery, 45 minutes away. Thankfully they got his blood pressure under control and he went home later that day, but at the time you have no clue what is wrong and all types of things go through your mind. On the way to the hospital we were actually talking about what I should do “if”.

I’m glad you are thinking about having a little break. You need some relaxing dolly time. I hope your sewing room problem is being fixed. Of course the problem has to be right over your sewing area. But when the problem is solved you should be good to go for the future in there. It is such a lovely sewing room.

I really want to see pictures when your bath remodel is complete. Black sinks sound like my cup of tea. Now I want to know the brand and also that of the flooring? Is the laminate waterproof? Gathering ideas here. 🙂

Barbara, my husband is also a DIY kind of guy, who is always thinking he is “going to” do this or that, but just no stamina or energy. At times, he’s very motivated to get that stamina built up again, and then sometimes he’s just in a funk about it. We’ve had some of those “if” conversations, too.

Thank you for your prayers. Ron had those short of breath episodes a few times today, but they didn’t last too long, and he didn’t want to go to the hospital again! He already has a pacemaker, and we know he has a very floppy mitral valve. He’s not a good candidate for open heart surgery, but it’s possible they could go in thru the groin and put a clip on the valve, which would help it work better. He’ll be having an echocardiogram next month, and we’ll know more then.

As a friend of mine says, getting old isn’t for sissies!!
