Felicity’s Colonial Dress is all finished….except for pictures…

I’ve been working on Felicity’s set ALL day long…off and on…and I have lots to show you. But first I thought I’d show you a few pictures of the baby chicks…I mean the toddlers…I mean the young girls… I mean the HENS! We are getting about 6 eggs a day now and have even gotten 2 that had double yolks! :o)

It had been too long since I took any pictures of the girls and you probably won’t recognize them…

If you click on any picture, it will enlarge.

They’re pretty curious when you go out to their pen…

…and not to be overlooked…the Old German Owls were outside in their fly pen enjoying this pretty day…

Okay, now back to Felicity… it’s 11:52, Monday night, and there was no way I could take pictures of the dress on Felicity and do them justice so I just did this…

Her hat was the first thing I worked on… I had just a few flowers in the right color and came up with this design… I used a wired antique looking ribbon in the color champagne as the tie… and a piece of vintage trim around the crown…

Since no Colonial girl would go outside without a round eared cap under her hat, I gave in and made her one… just a simple, very sheer, undecorated, no lace, no ribbon cap…It’s very pretty…

The coral silk ribbon won out with the most votes so I went ahead and used it… running it around the neckline and making tiny bows for her sleeves…

Rebecca made a pearl necklace for Felicity, only this time, using small glass pearls. It hides the seam at her neckline and closes in back with a magnetic clasp… super easy to put on…

…and the last thing I did was take out that coral ribbon in the petticoat…it kept twisting and bunching up… so I replaced it with a single ribbon rose in cream… (I bet you’re happier now, Julia!) :o)

Okay, now can you imagine how Felicity is going to look when you see her next? :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

It’s always fun to see pictures of the chickens and Old German Owls! Lucky you, to have all those wonderful eggs! Earlier this winter our neighbor gave us an extra 1-1/2 dozen eggs from her daughter’s chickens, and they were just wonderful. It was interesting, too, because they varied in color–from a very pale cream to almost a terra cotta color and some were what I would call a dusty teal! They were all delicious!

Felicity’s accessories have come together beautifully, Jeanne. I don’t know how you always manage to have just the right colors of flowers and ribbons for hats, but you do! The more delicate pearl necklace is definitely better, and I do love the coral ribbon woven thru the neckline lace. I think the petticoat looks better without the coral ribbon, too.

By the way, Dorothy L., I answered your question about the ruffle over the sleeve, in yesterday’s blog, if you want to go and take a look. Hope that will help you!

    1. HI Chartlotte,
It’s nice having lots of eggs every day… so many things you can do with them… :o)
Sometimes I surprise myself at what I find in my stash… I was thrilled to have found just the right flowers needed.
Thanks for answering Dorothy’s comments…I’ll check to see what you wrote too…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I loved seeing the hens, what a growth spurt they must have had! And the Old German Owls were doing the same things we did here, sitting outside between chores, just enjoying the warmth and nice weather! Nothing like chickens, owls and sunshine to take our minds off of the crazy things that go on all around us in todays world!

You always knock it out of the box, Jeanne! What a lovely set for Felicity! The hat is perfect for a Colonial girl, and yes, you always seem to have the right colors of everythng you need for an outfit! The pearl necklace is just the perfect size, and I guess you did away with the fichu, which, in my opinion, was not needed. I don’t think that neckline was that daring!! Oh yes, I like the slip better now, and the ribbon is the right color this time around! I can’t wait to see everything on her!

Looks like rain on the horizon, but the grass is really greening up now, and buds are on the trees, so I think I will start with my Easter decorations!

    1. HI Linda,
Yes, it was pretty yesterday…no sitting outside for me… but plenty inside!
I haven’t told it yet, but my hubby bought some new baby chicks a few weeks ago… I took pictures the day they came, and then a few days later… my goodness they have grown fast… and he’s out working on a place for them right now… they are getting too big to keep in the tub in the living room.
I realized the fichu was too much when I saw it in the pictures… it made her look like she didn’t have a neck… but this new tinier necklace seems just right… Glad you like it.

It’s been raining all morning here… and I’m doubtful if I’ll get any outside pictures of Felicity… but tomorrow is supposed to be pretty… so I might wait…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I missed the vote yesterday for the ribbon color, but I definitely like the coral. I can already tell I am going to love the hat and cap on Felicity. I will try and check back tomorrow to see if you have pictures of Felicity in the complete ensemble.

Those hens are cute. It would be so nice to have fresh eggs, but since we live in town, it probably wonā€™t be happening. I tried to count, and it looks like you have 11 or 12 hens, so does that mean each one lays an egg per day? If so, you will have an abundance of eggs!

    1. HI Carolyn,
I might not have pictures of Felicity up tomorrow…it’s rainy and dreary and dark here today…not good for outside OR inside pictures! I’m glad you like the dress set so far… :o)

We had 13 but my hubby sold 6 or 7 yesterday… BUT we have new baby chicks that will be added in a month or so… they are small right now, but they do grow fast. Yes, most hens lay an egg a day… We like to give our eggs away to friends at church… you can never have too many eggs! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Loved seeing the birds in their outdoor time. They all look so healthy. Quite amazing that the grass is so green and lush when only recently it was covered in white. šŸ™‚
Looks like you have been working hard on the dress and accouterments. I’m glad Julia mentioned that slip problem, because the redo is perfect. Now the slip can also be used with other outfits as well. Looking forward to seeing Felicity’s photos. Fun.
I finally finished the St. Patrick’s Day dress I’ve been working on for my big girls. At least they’ll have it for next year. šŸ™‚

    1. HI Joy,
I like that picture of the owls with the green grass behind them… they look so peaceful sitting out there…
Glad you too, like the new looks of the petticoat… it was a simple fix and I like it much better too.
We are having lots of rain today and it’s dark and gloomy… so probably no pictures today… but tomorrow it’s supposed to be nice… so maybe then…
Green works any time if you ask me… unless it has shamrocks on it… but still, show it to us anyway… We won’t judge you because you are few days late… :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. What a lovely hat. I can’t wait to see it on Felicity. The coral ribbon looks great and the pearl necklace with tinier pearls should be perfect. And I do like the change in the slip. I’m not very well versed on period dress but why did the women wear caps under their hats? I keep wanting to ask that. Felicity’s outfit is lovely and I can’t wait to see pictures of her wearing it all.

I bet the owls are loving the warmer weather and being able to get out. They’ve had a tough winter. My son used to raise chickens and I do miss the fresh eggs. He actually had so many he sold some to the neighbors and I still had plenty.

I woke up in the middle of the night to some pretty loud thunder and hard rain. I had no idea. I really need to check on the weather more often. It was cloudy and dark all day yesterday but never rained. Today it is absolutely beautiful out.

    1. Here are pictures from a search on “american women’s hats colonial”
      https://www.google.com/search?q=american+women%27s+hats+colonial&tbm=isch&client=firefox-b-1-d&hl=en-US&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiOwPjc3cbvAhXWLM0KHRHNAq4QBXoECAEQLA&biw=1903&bih=966
Clearly a lot of the hats shown are not colonial, but in some pictures you can see the cap under the hat.
Here’s Wikipedia on mob caps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobcap
The article has pictures at the end illustrating that mob cabs could be quite large and elaborate and undoubtedly expensive.
As to why caps were worn, even with hats, I think there were 2 answers: 1) it was the fashion, and 2) caps covered dirty or unruly hair in an age when bathing and hair washing were difficult. Until the 60s, head coverings were nearly always worn outdoors and often indoors.
I picture women from all eras in the same room, most of them staring at us, wondering why, with all our advantages, we are wearing our hair in our current brush-it-and-forget-it style.

      1. Thanks Marilyn. I will definitely check this out. It’s hard for me to imagine not washing my hair regularly. I’ve been trying to get an appointment to get a haircut and always have my hair washed at that time. But when I couldn’t get the day I wanted and it would mean my hair going too long without washing, well I just had to wash it.

    2. Thanks Marilyn,
Back to being our “researcher” again.. I LOVE IT! Thank you! I saw some of that same information about the mob caps when I was looking for inspiration for a hat… :o)
      Thank you!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. LOL, yes, I am much happier! šŸ˜ I know it will all look fab on Felicity!

Seeing your spring chickens makes me anxious to get started. We don’t have our chick’s yet. Our little coop hasn’t even been built. I love your hens. Is there a bench inside the fenced area? Your set up looks great. Do the hens and OGO, share a building or do they each get their own?

    1. Yay, you’re happy!
Yes, Julia, there is a bench inside the pen… the hens love to get up on there… the other day there were 3 on it…
No, the OGO are inside the red shed, part of the building is sectioned off for them, behind wire… and now there is a new section, underneath part of their area, because my hubby bought 6 new baby chicks… well they were bought about a month ago and they are ready to go out in the shed, with a heat lamp for a little while longer… Then the bigger hens are in the white coop building…
I’ll show it later how it looks on the inside when he gets it all set up. Hope you have fun when you get yours all set up.
      Thanks Julia,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Another beautiful ensemble for Felicity! Perfect coordination of trimmings. Looking forward to seeing the pictures tomorrow. Also nice to see the wonderful collection of chickens and owls.

    1. Thanks Susette,
I’m glad you like Felicity’s set so far… I’m not sure I’ll get any pictures today… I may have to show something else… it’s rainy and dreary and dark today… but tomorrow looks like a different story… it’s supposed to be sunny!
      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Jeanne, this outfit is really beautiful. The hat compliments it so well. Love the flowers and cream colored ribbon you chose for it. The petticoat is almost too pretty to hide under the dress. Everything about this lovely outfit is perfect. Canā€™t wait to see Felicity in the whole set.

Glad the hens and owls can be outside for a little sun. They are nice looking birds.

    1. Hi Paula,
I’m going to get Felicity all dressed in case the sun happens to come out and the rain goes away, but it’s supposed to rain until 10pm tonight, so the chances of pictures outside today are pretty slim…
I’m glad you like the way everything turned out for this set. I have to say, it is up at the top for me… it’s very pretty in person… I can’t wait to see her in it all either… I think I’ll go get her dressed and see what I think.
Thanks for the compliments on the birds… I’ll tell my hubby! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Spring chickens — the real thing. Wow. Really, you need to do another outfit featuring a chicken. Our grass is beginning to green up and most of the snow has melted, but we have another month of snow and usually one big storm after the leaves are out. Snow is predicted for today and tomorrow — the blue skies we woke up to are disappearing.

Felicity’s new outfit is charming. You were right about changing the petticoat ribbon. I like the cap fabric and am looking forward to seeing it and the new hat on Felicity. I like the new necklace and I love the easy on and off clasp. The other thing that may work with this outfit is Felicity’s coral necklace, for a buyer lucky enough to have one.

On a different note, the shooting in Boulder was about five blocks away in the grocery store where I have shopped for decades. Since there is a huge parking lot on three sides of the store, the situation was contained in a relatively small area and nearby neighborhoods were not affected. Nevertheless, it does feel different when the problem is almost literally in your back yard.

    1. I forgot to mention that I have the coral necklace and it would be perfect with the dress. So sorry to hear of the terrible tragedy in your immediate neighborhood, Marilyn.

    2. HI Marilyn,
I guess if you are supposed to have snow tomorrow, I won’t complain about the rain we are getting… better rain than snow… at least for me!
I wondered about a coral necklace… Rebecca had some coral glass beads, but it looked too similar to the coral ribbon running around the neckline… I decided the subtle cream pearls worked best…
As soon as I saw the headline on Google of a shooting in Boulder, I instantly thought of you… So glad you are safe and not affected… at least physically, by the shooting… but still that does seem close to home I’m sure…
Glad you are safe! Stay that way!
      Blessings, Jeanne

    3. When I first saw the news flash, my first thoughts were of you. I’m so sorry it was near you and that more people have lost their lives. Another senseless tragedy.

  10. Oh Jeanne,
This Jeanne Marie Original is simply gorgeous! I can imagine it on Felicity and she’s going to look STUNNING! I’ve been enjoying all the photo’s in the last few blogs. So many cute photo’s so I wanted to thank everyone for sharing, it really brightens my day.. well evening usually. LOL
Low 60’s in Western New York today. It’s not the norm but we’ll take it!
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Thank you Ingrid,
I appreciate your kind compliments on Felicity’s dress set… since she has that peaches and cream complexion, these colors work wonderfully on her… and I agree with you she does look stunning!
      Glad to hear from you…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. My the girls have grown. Lucky you to have so many eggs a day already.
Nice to see the Old German Owls as well and that they have a place to go outside and enjoy the fine weather.

Felicity’s new hat is beautiful with the lilies and the ribbon being neutral doesn’t compete with anything. The round eared cap is perfectly lovely plain. Yes, no girl would have gone out without a cap on her head under her hat. I like the more delicate necklace as well.
I do wonder also how you always seem to have exactly the colors of flowers, ribbons etc. you need. I know I would have to go out and buy them.
Glad to see the coral ribbon as it looks so pretty. the little sleeve bow are the perfect touch.

Sunny and warm here, time for lots of garden chores.

    1. Thanks Laura,
I thought it was time to show the birds and hens… they seem to like being in the limelight. :o)

I’m glad you like the way I did everything, Laura… being a historical expert (I think), I’m glad you approve. Peach/coral isn’t something I usually have a lot of, but thankfully, I had just what I needed!
We’ll have sunny tomorrow! Can’t wait!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. This ensemble is as pretty as it gets. The fabric, design, colors , lace , ribbon, pearls, hat, petticoat, hat, cap…. you put together the the best of all of it.
Canā€™t wait to see it all togetheršŸ˜‰šŸ¤©

    1. Thank you Kathie,
I can’t wait to see it all on Felicity either… I better go do that in case the weather happens to clear up… (fat chance!)
Thank you, Kathie, for your kind compliments!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  13. Jeanne, everything you make is just wonderful. I love how you ask our opinion (and listen to us lol). I can’t wait to see the photos.

It is definitely more autumn like these mornings. We had a lovely day yesterday but it only got to about 20C which is roughly about 60F. We had some rain last week, Sam just called and said it was spitting today. I didn’t hear the news or weather last night, was watching a One Day International cricket match which didn’t finish till 9.30pm so don’t know yet what the day has in store weather wise. Daylight saving ends on Sunday so the evenings will get much darker very quickly after that.

Marilyn, so glad you are safe, we heard about the shooting but I am never sure where everyone lives. It is unnerving when these tragedies are close to home. My youngest son’s house shares a back fence with the second Mosque that was targeted here two years ago now. His partner was walking up the driveway when she heard the shots, and ran inside to see someone clambering over the back fence. We know now that it was someone trying to escape the gunman but she didn’t know that at the time. Poor Russell was on his way back from a job in Auckland and heard about it on the radio but couldn’t get hold of Bianca, she had called 111 and been told to stay on the line! Hope the gunman thinks it was worth it, he is in his twenties and will spend the rest of his life in prison. He is in isolation so has no contact with anyone other than the guards. Probably worse for him is that he has no phone so no social media, last I heard no TV either so no contact with the outside world at all. He is Australian so all his family are over there so probably no visitors Imagine that for the rest of your life.

Jeanne, loved the pictures of your Hubby’s ‘girls’. It must be lovely to have that many fresh eggs. They (and you) will all be looking forward to the nicer weather.

    1. Thank you Anne,
Yes, I’m glad you all speak up for me too! Just think… I may have used the wrong color of silk ribbon or I might have left that strand of coral ribbon in the petticoat… I need everyone’s help!!
Thanks for your compliments on Felicity’s dress set…
Yes, sometimes it’s very scary in the world we live it… I was glad to hear of Marilyn being safe too… and your son’s girlfriend… wow… how scary!
I’m glad you liked my hubby’s girls… I guess we both collect “girls!”
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne
