My first Valentine doll dress of 2020 is taking shape…

Maybe it’s like riding a bicycle or typing or the multiplication tables… it just comes back to you, no matter how long it’s been since you last did it. It appears I didn’t forget how to sew… although I certainly was challenged by the skirt on this one. But I don’t think it was entirely my fault… it may have had something to do with how delicate this fabric is.

I said yesterday I was going to start on the skirt first to see what direction to go when making the rest of the dress. If you missed it, I am making a 50’s dress (although it seems like it will work for the 40’s and the 70’s possibly and really any modern dolls too.) This was my quick sketch…

This was actually the pattern that caught my eye…

Although I may have gotten carried away with the trim on the neckline and the sleeve cuffs… I just wanted to showcase the insets on the skirt and the waistband, but somehow this happened…

I thought the neckline might be too plain… so I added the checked fabric…

Then I added it to the sleeve cuffs…

…and I had already added it to the skirt sections…

…and I might still add it to the waist…we’ll have to see…

Maybe it’s one of those things that “more is better” instead of “less.” I hope so…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

I love how this dress is shaping up–and I’m glad you chose the bias gingham! Yes yes yes to putting it around the waist, also–I really like it!!

  2. Oh, so pretty and springlike, Jeanne! Yes, I too like the gingham around the waist! This may be too much, but I would like to see a ribbon, or maybe the gingham tied into a bow with some pretty pink and/or red flowers at the center of that at the waist , kind of on the side. I don’t know what your plans are for the rest of the dress, but just thought I would throw that out there.

Luckily, we missed the worst of the storm yesterday, but did get freezing rain for a time. Now it’s just plain wet! Baby shower today for me!

  3. So how’s your thumb taking all of the work you’ve been putting it through? Hope it is much better.
I like the bias checks on the neck and waist, and I agree with Linda that some flowers at the waist with more checks would be a pretty accent. Keep up the good work.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  4. Too cute! I do love the checks at the waistline. Very interesting skirt treatment. I’ve never seen this done before. I didn’t get any sewing done yesterday as I planned so I need to do twice as much today. Don’t really know what I did yesterday. At least I have nothing to show for it. Hope today will be more productive.

Dear Jeanne, you have a talent that will never leave. The dress is very cute. It is just right for a Valentine’s Day party.

  6. Of course, you wouldn’t forget how to sew. I think a skill, once learned is never truly lost. I also agree to added the checked fabric to the waistband. Such a cheerful print and dress to enjoy. Eden looks so happy to have been chosen! We’re having some weird weather here. Hit a record last week and today woke up to a sheet of ice on cars and ground. Luckily, that changed to rain by 9:00 when I was heading out to the store. Still a cold and yucky day. I am so, so ready for spring. The garden catalogs have started coming and I hope to really have a garden again this year.
