“Back to School in 1864” ~ American Girl Civil War dress is listed on Ebay…

I finally finished “playing” with Eden’s set up and managed to get this listing on Ebay… You can click on the picture at the right side bar… or click HERE to be taken to the auction. I think I got “crafting” out of my system this week, but who knows what the next dress will bring! :o)

BONUS TO MY SUBSCRIBERS: If one of you who reads my blog every day, wins this dress set, I will make you a map as much like the one I made for this listing and send it along to you. I don’t think I’ll need another panel so I thought why not send along a map to the winner!

Speaking of maps, when my sister, Cindy, saw the map in my post, she was reminded of a tiny little atlas she has…it’s only 3 3/4″ x 5 1/2″ and it has colored maps. It’s from 1871. Thought maybe you might like to see it… Cindy LIVES in Gettysburg and she was my inspiration for the storyline in Eden’s auction.

A few of you asked in your comments about the little chalkboard used in my listing. A dear reader of this blog sent it to me several years ago and I only have the information on the back of it. I did Google it and got nowhere… Maybe one of you will manage to figure out something….the writing is permanently on the chalkboard as are the eraser and the piece of chalk. Hope this helps…

Susette I tried using the lights from the light tent and this is what things looked like with them…uh… I don’t think so… Everything is too yellowy and too shadowy… I tried tweaking them, but never could get the yellow out…

I did take a few pictures outside, but I have the hardest time photographing Eden’s eyes… they are very dark green and I can’t get them to have any depth to them… They always just look kind of flat to me… unless you happen to get the light just right. Even outside, I wasn’t able to get any great shots… I do like the picture of her hat though…

It was too bright right when I decided to take pictures of Caroline… Oh well, I was showing off the crinoline, not my doll…

I have all my props taken down and put up… and it looks MUCH better in my sewing room. I had dug into every drawer and box I could find looking for things… and I had everything strewn all over the place.

Well, I’m going to bed early tonight…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

That map book of Cindy’s is Fabulous! Considering that atlases are usually oversized anyway, it would have fit perfectly in the school scenes….just in case Cindy decides to “loan” (give?) it to you for a future school ma’arm outfit!

I googled Eropel Enterprises (the chalkboard)–no web site, a facebook page with no activity, etc., but I did find out that Eropel is the reverse spelling of a gentleman’s last name, so I would say maybe a small, home-based business? Perhaps he sells at craft shows and the like?

Good luck on the sale! Someone is really going to enjoy dressing up her girl like a Civil War-era school ma’arm!

    1. Hi Charlotte,
I’m glad you enjoyed seeing Cindy’s little atlas
Wasn’t that fun to share in this post?

Thanks for searching about tbe chalkboard. I looked around and couldn’t find a thing about them…

      A bid already…yay!
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I just finished reading the Ebay listing, and can’t begin to tell you how cute and original it is, Jeanne! If you were a magician, you certainly have woven your magic with this one! I absolutely love the way the items are displayed and how you have highlighted all the accessories, to go with that beautiful outfit!

I guess it will soon be time for me to get out Maryellen’s school set, with the maps, chalkboard, and pointer soon. Of course, mine is a modern set, if you want to call the 50’s modern!! Then too, get out Molly’s desk , and dress the 40’s girls in their best first day of school outfits. I always feel a bit nostalgic around this time, being a former school teacher, even if it was long ago! However, I cannot imagine teaching school dressed like they did back in 1865!

    1. Hi Linda,
As a teacher, I’m glad you enjoyed my teacher story!! I had fun thinking it up!
It’s time for all good “dolly mommas” to get their school scenes set up!!! Take pictures…I know you will.
      Thanks Linda, Blessings, Jeanne

    2. I too get nostalgic at this time of year. I remember starting school in the 1950s in Bethlehem, PA, the day after Labor Day. We were already wearing sweaters in the morning. And not too far off we could look forward to the air being nippy and the leaves would turn those beautiful Fall colors. One year when we had a windy day during that time, after school my friends and I got some tissues and tore them into strips and chased them. Times were simpler then and we had a hilarious time. I think probably the idea was suggested by one of our moms who had lived during the Depression.

  3. I LOVE THE SCRIPTURE ATLAS!!!
The chalk board is beautiful. It does make a perfect prop for photos
This dress will sell in a snap.
I hope you have a wonderful day and week-end Jeanne.
    Your work is always exceptional

    1. Thank you Rosemary,
I’m glad you enjoyed seeing my little school setting. I had lots of fun with this one!!
You have a great weekend too!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Great listing, and I see there is a bid. 🙂
Love your sisters tiny book. And thank you Charlotte for figuring out the Lepore/Eropel mystery. Might be more to this than we want to know.
A tween dolly is due in from Sweden soon. I believe she can wear LD clothes.
Hope the weekend treats you well.

    1. Hi Joy,
      Yes, a bid already!! :o)
A new dolly? A tween? Oh how fun for you….which one?
      Remember pictures….
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I was off at the water park with my daughter-in-law and the grandkids yesterday so I didn’t comment but I did read the comments. Aside from all the other things you do, have you ever considered doing props for a theater group? You definitely pay attention to detail.

The setting was absolutely wonderful and very realistic. Love the table. Since the little booklets were overlapped in the picture, how did you get them to be individual books? I had the grandkids a lot this week so I may have missed some detail in your blog.

I looked at the auction. The story is great. I didn’t realize Cindy lives in Gettysburg. I’ve been to the battlefield twice. I used to live in Bethlehem, but surprisingly my parents never took us there. I actually went once after moving to Delaware when a co-worker, who had lived in Texas, wanted to take in all the historical sites of the Civil War before he got transferred again. The second time was when I lived in Texas and David, I and the kids went up to see my mom in Delaware and we all went to Gettysburg and Valley Forge. Funny how I lived a stones throw away and never went to either but my kids, who lived many miles away, have. They’ve been to Boston too. But then hubby and I love history. Sadly the kids don’t. But they do like our other interest. Geology was more their thing. They totally enjoyed looking for geodes or being several feet under the earth in caverns. If we were anywhere near those, we absolutely had to stop. Considering all the places they’ve been, they seem to only remember those.

I do love history, and believe it or not I love historical costuming, I have a great book I bought once when I was writing and wanted to make sure the clothing detail was correct. I’ve just never been big on sewing era clothing. But I do enjoy seeing what others have done.

Going to finish up some dolly summer sewing today. Need to start thinking about back-to-school now.

    1. Hi Barbara,
No, I’ve never done theater props but I have done my fair share of decorating for parties, showers, dinners, etc.
I also used to dress windows for a very expensive ladies store here in town. Loved doing that…
I could only use the bottom ones for the full front…the other ones were partially cut off…look back ad you’ll see…
Cindy loves living in Gettysburg. One time I visited her for 13 days and she took me to the best shops of authentic dresses and books and trims…it was such a fun time.
I hope you get to your school sewing soon…
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Happy Friday Jeanne,
Love this dress set! It’s so pretty. You are so very talented and detail minded. Also Cindy’s pocket atlas is a great find, love it. I wondered if you thought about looking for a map on line. I’ve printed out some really cool things of course hubby helps me with it because I need all the help I can get ; )
Hope you have a wonderful weekend
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Hi Ingrid,
I’ve been missing you! Glad you are back!
I did think about looking for maps online. But when I found this fabric… I “saw” a craft project in the works!
I’m glad you enjoyed my pos today!
      Have a great weekend yourself.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Jeanne, if you haven’t checked out Pixie Faire today you should. There might be something you’d like and the two books for 18″ dolls is interesting.

    1. Hi Barbara,
I haven’t checked out Pixiefaire today….YET… but I will! thanks for the reminder…
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Oh, I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Boxcar Chilrren books. I would love to read them again and see if I still like them even at 62!! I bet I would!
      Thanks again, Jeanne

      1. Charlotte Trayer

I loved The Boxcar Children, too! I remember one of our teachers reading it to us (a chapter a day) in elementary school, and it was probably one of the most-checked-out books in our little library! Later on, I found a copy for my son, and read it to him, also.

Hm, I wonder if it’s still among his books in the basement….

  8. Dorothy in PA and the World

Well it looks like school is in session for Miss Eden. I wish her well on her first day of classes. I hope she has a room full of attentive students. She will definitely be the best dressed teacher in the school.
I wanted to let you know that Sophia’s now has a Smithsonian line of doll accessories. These are for the modern 18 inch doll. The doll can dress as a biologist or paleontologist, to name just two careers.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
I was hoping to take some pictures with the back of some kids heads like they were looking at the teacher… I could see it in my mind but just ran out of time to getting it done.

Wow…I’d like to see those dolls! I wonder what kind of an outfit a paleontologist would wear?
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne
