I was “creative” today, but probably not the way you were hoping….

I just LOVE a good craft project… both of my kids have picked that up from me too! Kristoffer came over today and was working on a welding project.. yesterday he did some tile on his entryway. Rebecca bought a new purse off Ebay and thought the silver buckle was a little too shiny so we were trying to come up with something to tone it down a bit… glaze, rub ‘n buff, paint… We didn’t figure it out tonight, but I’m sure something will come to us.

Rebecca also had a “boatload” of alterations for me… she did my dishes and I did her alterations… I think she got the better deal.. :o(

Then I got busy with something I hadn’t done in along time.. worked on a paper craft. Not just any craft. You see, a few days ago, I found some cabinets on Craigslist that I like and I kept asking the lady questions about them. This morning she sent me a picture of the layout of the cabinets with measurements. I printed it off and then proceeded to draw out “my” kitchen floor in inches using graph paper and see if “her” kitchen cabinets would work in my space. They are actually display cabinets that were in a showroom for a custom cabinet place and are about an hour and a half from here.

Once I had the measurements, and the layout of my floor drawn, I made a template of each of the cabinets using graph paper to get it exact. We have that cold air return that we can’t go past…and my kitchen window is pretty big so I had to see what will work around it. We can’t go past the walkway to the the back of the house, so I had a few boundaries. The cabinets at this place are in a “U” shape…and my kitchen is basically an “L” shaped kitchen, with some cabinets on the opposite side.

Well, I worked and worked and cut out and pinned the pieces on my floor plan to see if they would fit. I think I have it pretty well figured out. I needed to do this right away so I could give the lady an answer ASAP. I will go over it with my hubby tomorrow and see what he thinks…(he was too tired this evening and it was the wrong time to bring it up…) :o)

So anyway, here are a few of my “crafting” pics… You may have to click on them to enlarge them…

I was laying the templates for the base cabinets underneath the upper cabinets and it was getting a bit confusing… SO…me being the visual person that I am… I folded my paper and made it a little 3-D. This way I could see the upper cabinets and see where the base cabinets fit below. I hope you understand what I mean…

I didn’t want to glue them down, because it was kind of like a puzzle and there might be a better way to arrange them…so I pinned them.. I used a few sewing skills doing this… but not sure you’d appreciate them…

After dinner, I realized I hadn’t done a thing toward Felicity’s dress set. I probably spent an hour or more trying to decide how to make the dress. I wanted it to be nice to go with that “million dollar hat!” :o) I had a piece of gold/yellow/mustard linen that goes wonderfully with the fabric and I also had a piece of vintage lace in the same yellowish/gold color. That was it…I’ll keep part of it a surprise, but you can see what I did manage to get cut out… I forgot to turn on my lights, so my picture might look a little drab to you. It’s not though.

Well, I guess that’s it for this crafty momma!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. There’s almost nothing that most of us would like more to see in your world than new cabinets, so that part of your entry today was a huge hit here and I’ll bet with everyone who checks in with you. Do you think it will be worth going to see them? We love your floor and feel strongly that it deserves good cabinets nearly as much as you do.

Felicity’s new dress is looking wonderful. You’ll have to include a couple of hat-making photos in your auction pictures. The gold is uncommon — the whole outfit is going to be unusual and beautiful.

Take care of George and have a great day.

    1. HI Marilyn,
George and I spent a big part of the morning making marks all over our kitchen counters, marking off for this cabinet and that cabinet and these drawers and that pantry… But in the end, he decided there were too many pieces we couldn’t use…*sniff* *sniff* We would have to buy all new countertops and have some left over pieces we couldn’t use. It was just too difficult to make their U shaped kitchen fit our L shaped kitchen. The hardest part is dying to the dream you hoped would come true…
There is a new set on Craigslist tonight and I have emailed the person, but so far no answer… I’ve already called about how much it would cost for a U-Haul to bring them back. They are a little farther away, (2 1/2 hrs) but a better price…
So I’m going to have to stop obsessing about them… and wait for “mine!”

I hope you can tell something about Felicity’s dress from my picture. The gold linen really is nice.
      Thank you for your compliments…
      Blessings, Jeanne

That is so exciting, Jeanne, that you are possibly close to getting your cabinets!! I think you chose a clever way to figure out how they will work in your particular kitchen, and it was fun for me to look at them. I liked that you did the 3-dimensional mock-up, too.

Felicity’s dress is going to be lovely, I”m sure. I’m thinking maybe a two-layer skirt, with one layer being the gold, which peeks out either from the CF opening of the upper skirt, or perhaps the upper skirt will be caught up here and there, allowing the under layer to show at the very bottom?

    Or, maybe, something else….

    1. HI Charlotte,
I’m not sure looking for cabinets right now is a good idea… my brain is in “wood” mode, not “fabric” mode… eek! I’ll find something eventually… I did enjoy doing the paper thing though!
I have an idea of the skirt, but I like your idea too of a double layered skirt! hmmm….
      Thanks so much Charlotte,
      blessings, Jeanne

  3. I hope the cabinets work out. I’m sure George will know if they can be successfully removed in good condition and reassembled. You sure did a good kitchen remodel mockup. Now you can add kitchen designer to your list of accomplishments. I hope George will have a lot of help with this project.

The hat has a wonderful shape and it looks like the dress will match the hat for interesting detail and style. I like the hat as it is, but I’m sure you’ll “doll it up” just fine. Have a safe trip to see the cabinets.

    1. HI Susette,
WOW oh WOW… the cabinets in your house are beautiful! I’m so glad you sent them… and included the prices…it made the ones I’m looking at seem very reasonable and it’ll be better when I find something… I can tell George… well, remember Susette’s! I’ll have a little leverage! :o)
Kitchen designer…I’m not! Maybe Kitchen Obsessor! (sp?)

I have the hat sitting on Nora right and she likes it as is too…but I’m sure I’ll give in and “doll it up!”

I don’t think we are getting the ones I mentioned, but I’m closer to getting them than I was 2 weeks ago! It’s a start! :o)
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Good luck with the new cabinets. I hope they work out for you. Your three dimensional mock up is a great idea. I’m looking forward to seeing pictures if they work out for you,
Oh that fabric is so pretty. I understand why you want to make it a special outfit. I think it will look great with the new hat.
Hope you have a good day.
    Take care.

    1. HI Charlotte,
I think my hubby nixed the cabinets I liked, but maybe it’s for the best… the countertops didn’t work at all for ours and there were some left over pieces we couldn’t use. He wanted me to see if something better comes up… and a set did come up tonight on Craigslist… maybe they’ll work… He likes them and there are plenty for us to use in our kitchen… plus it has granite countertops… so we’ll see…

I’m glad you like the fabric… see why I had to find it…and why I waited for it to come from Australia? I hope I can make it look like I want it to.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I totally agree with Marilyn’s cabinet response. Hope those cabinets fit. I believe I would have done the kitchen layout exactly like you did as I’m visual too. And then the pins! Perfect way to attach. 🙂 Since they are display cabinets, I’m sure they are screwed to the wall and should be easy (well maybe) to take apart. If a piece doesn’t fit exactly, it is fairly easy to put in some filler pieces. We did that in our kitchen when we had to shrink the space from the old huge stove. Some paint and you can’t tell at all.
Seeing the dress fabric and embellishments made me smile. It is going to be so pretty.
    Hope everything goes well today.

    1. HI Joy,
I guess “great minds think alike…” (referring to the layout and the pins!) :o) I think those cabinets are not going to be mine… too may things didn’t work when we tried to make them work in our “mock” set up in our kitchen. None of the countertops worked for us… I’d have to buy 2 more base cabinets plus the rental of a U-Haul to get them, gas… etc.. I have been sad, but I know something else will come up…It was a GREAT deal and I can’t believe it won’t work for my kitchen… *boo hoo*
      Oh well… start sewing Jeanne… :o)
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Have you priced Silestone or granite at Home Depot? Because, if I were doing the kitchen, I wouldn’t even bother with the used countertops. Just get the cabinets and fit them in. Then, the counter top people will come out and measure and cut the new tops to fit exactly. It would really be worth it to have the counter tops fit nicely. Or you could just install that large size squares of porcelain granite look alike tiles yourselves with matching grout very cheaply. I’d go with that rather than try and use counters that don’t fit your layout and might not be an appealing color. Just another peep from me. 🙂 And I’m sure you will find just the right cabinets you need soon. Don’t throw out the design board and 3d cabinets. You can probably use it again.

        1. HI Joy,
I DID look into that Silestone counter top stuff… it’s very nice! I told my hubby about it too… and YES… I plan to keep my layout…and the cabinet templates I have cut out…who knows maybe some more will pop up and I will be “set!”
Thanks for looking out for us, Joy!
          Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Again, Jeanne, I marvel not only at your skills, but your patience in showing us all of the details. I might come up with similar ways of figuring things out, but my, you win the “dolly” when it comes to sharing the details of your days with us. Many thanks for the patience and time it takes to do so. It’s so nice to have a friend laying out her ideas for us so clearly nearly every day and that we get to oooh and aaaah over what she is accomplishing.

I too hope the cabinets will work out, that George will have the time and energy to help you with the steps. I’ll be eager to hear the outcome of all of this….and, Felicity’s gown (and hat) are just going to win the prize in my mind for yet another beautiful creation from “I Dream of Jeanne Marie”. What an honor we have in following your work.

    Blessings.

    1. HI Becky,
I’ve been a little distracted lately since the cabinets might actually become a reality… I’m trying to stay grounded…
Well, I’ve had to die to my dream of pretty cabinets twice today. The first ones, my hubby decided, were too much for the ones we could use…as there was still counter tops that would have to be bought, 2 more base cabinets and then the cost of going up with a U-Haul to get them. Right after I thought I was over that… a new set popped and I thought surely I must be the first person to see them… unfortunately, I just got an email a few minutes ago… “Sorry they are sold.” *sniff* *sniff* again…Oh well, I know the Lord has some for me somewhere, and I just have to be patient…. so how about I get in my sewing room and make something pretty… YES… I can do that! :o)
      Thank you Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. I think your mock up is amazing. I’m a visual person too but I sure don’t think I could have gone to that detail. Sure hope those cabinets work out for you.
Can’t wait to see Felicity’s outfit come together, I just love how you show us your design process.
    Prayers for you and George

    1. HI Leigh,
Well, those first cabinets didn’t work out… the second ones I found too… just sold! :o(
I think I better get in my sewing room and see what I can come up with in there!
I’m glad you are enjoying yourself on here, Leigh…
      Blessings, Jeanne
