Our Mystery Doll is still a mystery PLUS a SWEATER DRAWING!!

Hi everyone,
I think we can all agree that the one little doll is a Topsy Doll. I think she looks almost identical to the one on Ebay… Here she is again if you missed seeing her yesterday..

The larger doll proved to be more questionable. Cindy said there were no markings on her that she could find… I’m sure she didn’t take her wig off, but it may have been loose enough for her to see underneath.

Here was the larger doll again… a few of you called her a Mama Doll.

I did get an email from Joy and she tried, but the doll wasn’t a match either… Here is a picture of the one Joy found… and what she said about her… If you click on the pictures of the two dolls they enlarge nicely and you can see the differences in their eyes, their eyebrows, and lips…

For whatever reason, this doll appears to be very similar to the one your sister shared with us. Has the plate, and squeaker etc. I don’t think you mentioned her size?? That might help in the identity.
Anyway, there are quite a few similar, but this one is kind of shiny. Perhaps they shined her up to sell. Don’t know. The hair on this one looks more Shirley Temple, but it could be a new wig. Don’t know. Didn’t see dimples.
Joy

Cindy said the doll Joy found definitely had fuller cheeks than hers and hers had painted eyelashes as well as sleep eyes.

I’ll put them side by side so you can see them together…

Well, enough on our mystery girl… She’s just a generic doll that was loved by someone, and only Tootie might know who she is… :o)

Okay, well, today was supposed to be the reveal of Paula’s She Shed, but Kristoffer wasn’t able to help me over the phone to get her video to play, so he said he will try to come over this weekend and help me figure out how we can show it. It’s really wonderful! Hang on Paula…

I also received an email and some pictures from Charlotte…

Hi Jeanne,
As promised, here are a couple of pictures of Frieda in the beautiful sweater that Anne made, and that I received as a prize in the drawing. As you can see, there is some of that aqua in the print of her dress. With all the cold weather we’re having (well, in Seattle, a “high” of 43 is pretty chilly, although not compared to other parts!), Frieda is so glad that Anne made that lovely sweater for her!!

Thank you Charlotte AND Anne! What a cutie and that aqua color is one of my very favorites to wear…AND sew!

I ALMOST forgot about the Sweater Drawing for Today! I better get it in here right now! Anne, our Sofa Sister in New Zealand, knitted 6 sweaters for me to give away on my blog. If you would like to try and win one, please let me know in the comments. Anyone can comment, but if you want to be in the drawing for this sweater below, and haven’t won one already, please just let me know and I’ll add your name… This pretty white delicate sweater fits the Ruby Red Fashion Friends and the American Girl Wellie Wishers. Isn’t it beautiful? Perfect for Valentine’s Day or Easter! You might be able to wear it backwards… I’ll never tell! :o) I’ll announce the winner Saturday! There will be another one to give away next Friday! Someone remind me!!!

See you Monday… or Saturday.
Blessings, Jeanne

It was interesting to compare the two mama dolls side by side. I think Cindy’s has a happier expression on her face.

Thank you for sharing my pictures. Now Frieda thinks she needs new shoes and socks because these don’t go with her outfit very well! Here I am, with now Three “fashionista” dolls!! (The other two being Gigi and Dazzle.)

The white sweater with the lacy bits is very pretty. Putting it on her “backwards” gives a whole different look, I think. Since I have already won a sweater, I will not be in the drawing, but just had to comment anyway!

Anne, many years ago my husband got me a little plaque that said, “she who dies with the most fabric wins”–and he told me, I don’t have to die, I’ve won already!! And I didn’t have nearly as much fabric then as I do now!! 😂🤣😂 I’ve been doing pretty well lately at resisting fabric purchases, but Expo is only a month away, and all bets are off then!!

Thanks so much Charlotte, for sharing Frieda’s photos. I love her dress and the sweater that Anne, made is perfect with it. 🙂

    2. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Charlotte, I forget to say how pretty your Frieda looks in that lovely sweater and also the sweet dress. So glad you won it.

      1. Linda in St. Louis

I forgot too, Charlotte! That color was just made for Freida! She looks lovely in it! So happy she won that one!

Well, we may never know who that first doll is, but the picture that Joy sent is a bit similar, so tney both are probably around the same age. The hairdo looks somewhat alike, but .Cindy’s doll has more of a wide eyed look and of course, the mouth is different.

The sweater is very pretty and can be used as a jacket too, for spring. Since
Easter is pretty early this year, April 3rd, I believe, that would make a cute topper for a pretty spring dress!

Jeanne, since I too have a couple of sweaters from Anne, don’t include me in the drawing,

Hope you are feeling more like yourself, and not coughing so much anymore! Any bets on when this snow will melt?🤔

Jeanne, the 2 mama dolls could be sweet sisters, but not quite the same.

I hope Kristoffer can open Paula’s She Shed for us. What fun to have one!

I will be dragging some bags of stuff for Good Will next. We will take them after the YMCA. Coming home I will fill more bags. I have waited way too long to do this.
Y”all have a good weekend, stay warm and well.

  4. Debbie in North Carolina

Thanks to all for your birthday wishes. I did comment yesterday afternoon as we made our way home from the doll museum.

Running out the get some groceries as we are in for it again! ☃️

    1. Theresa in Indiana

Belated Happy Birthday wishes, Debbie! A doll museum sounds like so much fun! I don’t know of anything like that anywhere close to where I live

  5. Theresa in Indiana

I love the white sweater! White is so versatile, and I like the backward look, too. Please include me in the drawing.

Back to Cindy’s doll – dollreference.com says: “Too many Mama dolls are look a like’s and unmarked, making it nearly impossible to identify a Mama or Baby composition doll with certainty. Unmarked head molds could be used by different doll makers. Sometimes the best you can do is describe it as a Mama or Baby doll type and estimate the dolls date of being made.”

There was a photo of a mama doll body (couldn’t see the head) and it looked like Cindy’s doll’s body. It was from around 1928.

I believe that the pic I sent to Jeanne, was an Effanbee doll. So, maybe the mystery girl might be as well. This is where I found the photos. Different angles can make a difference too. 🙂 If you look closely, the mouth really looks the same to me. Cindy’s doll has lovely eyes. Hope that she can get her fixed up.

How’s Jeanne doing with her flu recovery? Coughing over? Sure hope so. And then, which dolly is next for a new outfit? Looking forward to that. 🙂
    Have a fun weekend everyone.

  7. Debbie ⬆️ Good luck with the snow storm. I hope it is not too destructive.
Now is the time to load up on groceries.

well, these two dear dollies look like sisters, certainly from the same time, the construction looks similar. Oh could you imagine getting such a nice doll!, she is not a baby but perhaps a nice best friend for a little girl! Someone mentioned yesterday, Shirley Temple. I think this doll would have been from around that time? I mean this is not her, but just the time period when a doll other than a baby was desirable. Oh gosh, just so sweet.

Charlotte your Frieda in her new blue sweater is just lovely, I love the style and the dress is perfect to go with it.
I could also imagine a pretty party dress to go with this sweater, adding some light fluffy white fur around the collar and front.
This new sweater is very pretty. I love the lacy look of the edges. Very fancy. I have one Wellie Wisher size doll, she is a Glitter Girl? and she has no clothes! I really need to make her some nice pants and a blouse. She is barefoot too! just horrible!

Well, I hope everyone has a nice week-end. We have sunshine and I am hoping we do not get any wintry weather, the single digit temperatures are enough to deal with.

    1. Charlotte Trayer

Thank you, Rosemary. I do need to make my RRFFs some new dresses, with the conventional waistline, which would show off the sweater even better, I think. After Expo (in a month) and my related panic-sewing are over, I will see what fabrics I have in ye stash that would work for my girls.

  8. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, can it really be that there is only one day (after today) left in January? It is the last day in the first month of the second quarter of the 21st century. I am glad I don’t have to write that in Roman numerals (laugh).

Wishing you and the Sofa Sisters a wonderful, warm, and wind-down weekend!

[I am opting out of the drawing as I don’t have any dolls that size.]

  9. Well I don’t know much about those older dolls. The very last picture of that doll is a really pretty doll compared to the other dolls Jeanne is showing. all I can say is I’m so glad that we have Barbies, the American girl dolls, and the Ruby Reds, and a few of the others that Jeannie sews for – I don’t know the names of their companies though. The
the hair on any doll to me is one of the most important things I like and even though I didn’t want American girl dolls to have wigs, still they have beautiful wigs, and beautiful hair. So I’m glad I never had any of those older dolls with the glued on mohair wigs.
Btw- Have any of you seen some of the new American girl dolls coming out?
Some are bizarre to me, but I’m sure the little girls know exactly who they are And what they represent.

Charlotte, your little aqua sweater is really cute on Frieda. Anne certainly has a gift of knitting.
I love the white sweater and the fact that you can turn it around if you want, is clever – the knitting and the pattern is so beautiful.
I’d like to put my name in the sweater Giveaway too.

Hard to believe we’re at the end of January already. I do hope the next couple weeks go fast so I can get this terrible cast off of my arm. I have to appreciate what other people go through who may have to wear larger casts. Mine is on my right hand, which is what I write with, It covers part of my hand and goes up about midway of my lower arm. The way it is on my hand, I can’t even lift a fork, so I’m doing everything with my left hand which is frustrating. However, I am grateful that my hand will be back to normal when this is over with. I have great doctors and nurses.
Everyone – have a great day!

    1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Paula, That does sound very difficult to have to do every thing with the wrong hand. I hope it will be well soon and good as new.

      1. Thank you Sissy. I’m hoping the next three weeks go fast, and I have to be grateful that my wrist was taken much better!

  10. Elizabeth in Texas

Love the white sweater for a Ruby Red doll! PLEASE include me in the drawing!

The white sweater is so versatile and would look great with a dress outfit or a blouse and slacks look. I don’t know how to knit and appreciate seeing the results from that skill. I have a Youtube site bookmarked that I have watched and tried to follow a few times so I could learn how to knit. The instructor is a lady who takes her time and patiently walks you through the first steps, but then I can’t seem to figure out how to take the yarn row off of the needles. Perhaps if I could actually sit with a real person and watch how it is done….

I might as well be sitting in an Algebra class! I could grasp the beginning or start up but fell behind as it became harder and harder!

    1. Joy in northern CA

I had to laugh about Algebra. Same with me and even taking it several times, I just couldn’t get that last part. Oh well, I’m glad that I learned fractions which I use a lot in sewing. 🙂

      1. Linda in St. Louis

Elizabeth and Joy, I never did take algebra in high school! How I ever managed in college is beyond me! I. All my 83 years, I have never needed algebra! Now fractions are another thing, and yes, I use those too!

  11. Barbara in SE Texas

Definitely add me to the sweater drawing please. This white sweater is absolutely beautiful and I love the edges. Amazing job Anne.

Charlotte, I love the sweater on your Freida. And her dress is so cute. I think her shoes and stockings look fine but a girl can never have too many of either so I understand where she’s coming from.

Another cold weekend for us here, but thankfully no precipitation expected.

    1. Charlotte Trayer

Thank you so much, Barbara! I have tried to tell Frieda that it’s been chilly lately, so the tights will help keep her legs warm, but you know how it is, once they get an idea!!

  12. Joy Lynne Carter

Frieda is a very pretty doll… loved her little outfit including high top shoes. Looks like an outfit I would wear☺️

  13. The white sweater is beautiful and so versatile. Love the insert designs. Please include me. A gorgeous sweater, Anne.
Freida looks lovely, Charlotte. I’m not surprised she wants new shoes and socks. I have a couple girls like that in my bunch.
Had to go to the store again this morning as we might be getting more. Ugh! Sick of it! I’m very concerned as two of my five porch kitties I also care for have been missing since Saturday. At least they haven’t been here for breakfast and I have missed seeing them at some point during the day. There are six warm houses between the porch and backyard though so I have to hope they have been using them.

    1. Charlotte Trayer

Thank you, Laura. I actually think I do have some other RRFF socks/shoes around here that I ordered quite some time ago. I just have to remember where I put them!!

  14. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

    Good morning everyone
Well that was fun! I was trying to comment and suddenly the keyboard wasn’t working, so I tried the laptop keyboard and got the same result, zero. In the end I had to restart the computer.
Thank you for your nice comments about the knitting. I learned the basics of knitting when I was about 5 or 6 but didn’t knit anything more than scarves and stuff (which were always unfinished) until I was about 15 and I knitted myself a sweater, not very well. I really started knitting properly when I was pregnant with my oldest son (who just turned 60). I think I have said before that my Mum was a really beautiful knitter and I have never been able to equal her standard.
Remember I said I had sent my brother a photo of the quilt I was working on to check whether his wife would like it or not? They both loved it and would be delighted to have it so will have to finish it now. It will have to wait till we have finished sorting the workroom, though.
It will be interesting to see Paula’s ‘she shed’. When I had the garage/workroom built I had to have it signed off by the council, when the inspector came and was signing it off he said ‘I have seen lots of Man sheds, but I’ve never seen a woman shed before’, lol
I really hope the weather will improve for you all, stay warm everyone
