Hi everyone,
Let’s see what everyone wants to talk about…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, I’m sure we are all wondering how George is. Is he back in the hospital? or hopefully at home, perhaps with some extra help? I’m sure you have your hands full right now. Know that you are both on all of our hearts and in our prayers.
I finally got some pictures taken of my new purse, and will try to get them loaded onto my computer so I can send them to Jeanne in the next day or two.
And then….I went into my sewing room and picked up a long-ago quilting UFO (unfinished object, for any non-sewers out there).. As I recall, it was a “mystery quilt”, where we were given only a certain amount of directions each month, until we had a set of blocks. I have 10 blocks, six of one color way (block A) and four of another (block B). There are several ways I can arrange them but I think I will do an arrangement of three rows of three blocks each, which will leave an “orphan” block, which I could incorporate into the backing, I suppose. I don’t think I still have the fabrics I used in these blocks, so I can’t make any more to match. Anyway, I’m starting to sew the sashing strips in place–these will go between the blocks. Then I think will sew one or maybe two borders around the entire quilt. It won’t be real big–the blocks are only 8″ squares, finished. But it might make a nice baby quilt (for a girl!) or possibly a wall quilt; that remains to be seen!
Last Friday my friend Leah got the sleeves of her blouse hemmed, and we have started pinning up the hem. Since it’s a curved “shirt tail” style hem, I got her started in pressing the hem of the shirt-tail-style lower edge. Soon she will have a new blouse to wear!
My friend Marika will go out for lunch on Halloween, and bring dolls, of course! Stay tuned.
That’s great that you’re again working on the UFO. Can’t wait to see it all finished. Since it will be smallish, maybe it might be cute draped over an end table or even centered on a dining room table as an accent piece? There are so many great ways I’ve seen them displayed. Looking forward to seeing your purse pics too.
Looking forward to seeing your quilt finished Charlotte. I am not sure how it happened but I made two extra blocks for the quilt I am making. I might put them in the backing, maybe use one as the label.
We were just talking about how we need to winterize around here. I need to make sure the porch plants are moved further undercover and we have our outdoor faucet covered too. Because, it is getting colder at night. Not going to frost yet, but might get close soon. Leaves from our sycamore trees are covering the front lawn too.
Good question about changing dolls wearing attire seasonally. I used to be totally on top of that until I had my current mobility situation so most of my dolls are still in summer clothes from last summer. I’m feeling much better these days so hope to at least get them out of summer things and into their holiday finery this year. Since my Christmas tree and village are still up from last year I won’t have to take time for that so I should be in good shape to get my dolls ready for the holidays.
I change some of my doll’s clothes according to season, but not all. The one doll that really does get changed is whichever one is going with me to lunch with my friend Marika. We always dress our dolls for the season. In September, they wore back to school clothes. For Halloween, they will wear costumes (my American Girl dolls each have 2 or 3 to choose from). And so on.
Georgina, I most certainly do change my dolls according to the season. In fact I like to change them every two weeks! I have so many clothes for them, it just ballooned sometime when I wasn’t looking!😊. I figure, why have all these clothes and not do anything with them? Besides, it is fun to change them and create scenes!
I don’t know exactly why, but I don’t get the satisfaction of making crafty things anymore. I used to make wall hangings, stitchery crafts, Christmas ornaments, just special little things that I made for gifts. But no one needs anything any more, and the only thing that I do now, is scrapbooking, actually not a lot of that any more, since the grandchildren have more or less grown up and where are physical pictures anymore? Everything is on a computer now! But each grandchild has their own scrapbook and they love to go through them, since they don’t remember when they were babies and toddlers. They are something that won’t go out of style and each child will have their own book to treasure long after I am gone. Do any of you do scrapbooking too?
Looking forward to Charlotte’s pictures, and any that others might send to help you out, Jeanne, in these challenging times.
I understand the change in interests, Linda.
Perhaps that is why I am sewing like mad on this Gathering Wildflowers quilt.
I hope you have found other enjoyable activities to fill your days. The photos albums are absolutely beautiful ideas and treasures for a lifetime! brilliant idea!
Kudos to you for making wonderful scrapbooks for your grandchildren. I managed to do a pretty good job of keeping up with the baby books for Andrea and Sean but never did get around to doing anything for the grandkids other than their crocheted crib blankets and I did a quilt for the last grandchild.
Again we are all concerned about George’s going to the ER and how he is doing. What a hard time you both are having. I know we are speaking to God and He listens.
Linda, I have a couple of thoughts about what you wrote. As for giving things to people anymore, yes it is hard. I finally started to send homemade cookies to them and it was a big hit! I can’t send those to my older son because his wife can’t eat things like that. He always tells me what he wants. Also, I made scrap books for my sons from baby pictures on up. I have so many pictures I have made of family and friends that I have been going through them and making piles for each group. For Christmas I am sending them to each group. Hopefully they can look at them with their families. It is sad that now all our photos are in our phones.
My Niece and her hubbs are coming this evening so I still have work to do. I hope Y’all have a good day!
A couple years ago I gathered up all the family pictures taken over the years and sorted them by occasion. I usually had more than one set made so I gave Sean a physical set and Andrea asked that hers be digital so I scanned and sent hers that way. I also gave a set to Jason. My original purpose for doing this came after I saw so many people evacuating for a hurricane and I started thinking what would I most like to take if I had to leave the house in a hurry. It was pictures because they cannot be replaced. I now have all of them in one place so that I could quickly gather them in a hurry.
Jeanne, you are always so cheerful on your blog. I just want you to know that all of us have both of you dears in our hearts and prayers. I know these are difficult days.
I appreciate your efforts to keep your blog going. If things become overwhelming, just know that you do not have to make a blog post. On those challenging days, we will certainly understand.
I could always put some photos on my flickr page. I will send you some. I am not the greatest photo taker with phones. I should take some time and watch some youtube videos. I am sure there are video tutorials for iphones.
I am so grateful for all of you. I love you, Jeanne and George. I know your days are bumpy. Both of you are bravely navigating each day. I wish I could be a helper.
I have been sewing a lot every day. I have three Featherweights and I have taken all three out, (unpacked from their little black carry case) one at a time, and cleaned and oiled them. and run my sewing project through them. I feel like I am accomplishing two tasks at the same time, working on my quilt, and servicing my machines.
The days have been super chilly here in Northern Virginia. 72º was the high yesterday and today will be 82º, tomorrow they are “guessing” higher and then the temperatures will plummet into the daily highs of 65º. Kitty Princess has been complaining of chills and drafts. She is disgusted with the screened in porch and lack of large sunny patches and humidity.
I brought down a fluffy cave kind of kitty bed, with a plug in heat pad. I finally convinced her to climb inside and try it out. I think when it is getting chilly like this, she prefers being upstairs in her carpeted “paradise room” with the classical music.
I wish I could wrestle her into a nice sweater. Remember, she is cornish rex and has only fine curly hair. Oh well. She gets a lot of snuggles.
I hope today is a productive but restful day for all of you. I wish all of us could have a group hug. Let’s imagine that, and continue moving forward bravely.
Love to all of you
I love hearing about Princess kitty. I wonder if she would go for a little pal? You know, to keep her company? Just a thought. 🙂
Glad you’re getting use from your Featherweights. Clueless here on how to take care of the one here that resides in it’s case. I’ve never sewn on it but know that it needs oiling etc. as it hasn’t been used in many many years.
They are very easy to use and maintain.
This is just one of many Featherweight blog/web sites.
There are also a boat load of youtube videos 😂
We would love for “Prin” to have a playmate, but I am not sure she would be happy about that. She would probably VERY much not like having to share her servants with another kitty. She does love the grand girls when they come over from Richmond. They are very well trained in all of her “treatments” that she expects.
We have never had a doggie. I know several neighbors here that have dogs and those pups go to doggie daycare one day a week. How fun is that? Kitties are not like that. We do put birdie tv on for her, she sometimes likes watching that. Fortunately, hubbs and I do not go out much so she has us full time. When we do go out, I always promise her we will be back in 10 minutes 🥳
I’m going to look at that page, too, Rosemary, as I also have a Singer Featherweight. It was made in 1948, so is two years younger than I am!
Joy in northern CA
Well, we have a cool 45 this morning but hopefully warming up later. I was cold all night since we haven’t added the electric blanket yet. I don’t think that they even make them any more. Do they?
Anyway, I found a couple of bankers boxes with paperwork up at the other house, so I need to look through and see if we put the information on the windows there. It doesn’t appear to be here or is disintegrating somewhere in the office, probably never to be found. I checked the kitchen windows up there yesterday, and they look just fine. I plan to do one room a day and hope not to find any others with problems. We’ll see how it goes. That window in the attic dormer gets direct sun most of the day so that may have had something to do with it’s demise.
Here, no yardwork yesterday, but I did start in again on that crazy flower I’m trying to make. I’ve taken it apart several times as it just doesn’t look right. But, I did make the center for it and that seems okay. It’s the petals that are driving me nuts. I’m sure that Jeanne, would have whipped out a flower in nothing flat.
I’ve been trying to get used to a new med and so far, I’m not happy with the results. I’m giving it a couple of more days before I email the doctor and tell him I’m going back to the old stuff. Always something.
I hope that George, is improving and that Jeanne, is getting some sleep and is eating well. Stay healthy, please. Wish that I lived closer to be able to pop in and chat and bring cookies.
Speaking of photos on phones now: yes It is sad.
Hubbs was able to remove all of daddy’s photos from all of his devices after he went to Heaven. Fortunately, daddy, at age 99.9 kept all of his files up to date and he was tech savvy. Older photos, he started scanning all of those many years ago, we still have all originals, and slides and also any videos. Amazing what a library of stuff we have.
Jeanne, sending prayers for George. We love you both.
We have boxes and boxes of photos that we need to go through. We (Sam and I) have done scrapbooking but these days there never seems to be enough time to do everything we want to do. I made albums for Darrens two from birth to 1. Livvie got hers on her 1st birthday but Jack had to wait till he was 5 and had complained a couple of times but I think they enjoyed looking through them. Whether they still do at 26 and 23 I am not sure.
I attached two borders yesterday so after the cleaning (Oh joy) I will quilt the other two, I don’t think I will get them attached today though. I had hoped to take it to our guild meeting tomorrow, for show and tell, but it will have to wait till the next meeting. However, it is nearly finished.
Rosemary, the temps that you think are ‘chilly’ are our ‘whew, it’s hot’ temps! Yesterday it was 27C which is 80F (definitely ‘whew’) today only 14C (57F) so time to put on a cardigan and ditch the pretty blouse for a T-shirt. Or maybe even a sweater. It is going to rain till Friday but hasn’t actually started yet! According to my phone it is currently “fine for running”!!! Not in my world.
Have a good day everyone. Jeanne, I hope your day is better.
Love you all
Anne, yep, some of these temps – most of them are too hot for me. 65º is a good temp. I can put a sweater on, or just be in sleeves if I get too warm. I do not like warm weather, it just drains me, especially if there is humidity. At present, 3:40PM it is 83º on the screened porch, so it is probably a bit warmer in the sun. KittyPrincess loves being outside on the porch. She has never had her own screened porch until we moved here to this house a year and a half ago. She knows she is not allowed to put her paws on the screens. She gets a loud “no no!” If it is chilly outside, she is so unhappy.
57º sounds pretty good for running…. but I used to love running, not anymore. That temp sounds reasonable for me though.
Nice that you got the borders done. I put the “patriotic flags and bows” quilt top on my big ironing board and pressed the top. I pulled the little threads. Now I have to flip it over and do the back clean up. I have a extra wide backing. I may just send the whole piece (iron it first) to the long armer.
Jeanne and George I will keep praying for you. So sorry to hear there has been another visit to the ER. We Sofa Sisters will keep the blog going so don’t worry about that. Please take care of yourself while taking care of your hubby. A big virtual hug from here.
Jeanne….you have many, many ladies who are praying for you and hubby, me included. All anyone can do is take it one day at a time. Thank you for suggesting we all chat.
Charlotte….your little quilts sound so neat and I love the idea of even possibly using one as a table topper. I recently gifted the two baby quilts I made for Granddaughters babies but I don’t know if they are using them as blankets or possibly even wall hangings! I have a couple of books on making table toppers and have made a few (years ago) in colors to go with my daughters dining rooms. Table toppers are a fun project because they can be sewn fairly quickly…I might have some photos I could send to Jeanne, if I can locate them! I also have a little book titled “Mug Rugs” and those are quick and fun too…a little larger than a coaster so a cup of coffee or tea and a snack could sit on them.
Joy…I hear you about winterizing! We don’t bring in the two porch plants in large pots (an Umbrella Tree plant and a beautiful yellow and light green leafy plant) until late Oct or sometimes the beginning of Nov. Here in Texas, it is 90 degrees out today and muggy. My daughter trimmed the front bushes over the weekend with her new little bush-trimmer and she did a really good job. She also trimmed off the lower branches (she also bought a tree branch trimmer) on the tree by the curb….I chuckle when I look at it…I told her its the “Lollipop Tree”…a stick of a tree trunk with a rounded bunch of green leaves at the top! Then she put a fertilizer stick down in the ground by the tree. (Watch out HOA….we’re on top of things around here!)
And I know what you mean about getting used to a new med! A few weeks ago my gastro doctor started me on a low-dose beta blocker (his treatment to avoid esophageal varices since I do not want to subject myself to another endoscopy) I had some varices many years ago after my liver tanked from having my second total knee replacement, and the liver is stable now and I’ve had no esophagus issues since then. My feeling is, as I am getting closer to being in my 80’s, if it’s not broken then let’s not fix it. I understand where the doctor is coming from…they want to preserve us and prevent issues….but as I said to him….maybe if something happens in my 80’s, then maybe it’s God’s will or mother nature’s way. Anyway, I messaged my doctor to inquire if I could stop taking the beta-blocker all-together without any serious side effects, because I was experiencing shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. The drug made me feel like I could not expand my lungs and take a deep breathe…felt like “slow suffocation”…a disturbing feeling. So I did stop taking it, and my heart rate has been returning to my “normal” number. My PC doctor has me on a low dose of blood pressure med and have no side effects whatsoever, so I figure there is some heart protection there. And I am feeling like my “old” self!
Rosemary….loved hearing about your Kitty Princess! My daughter and I have three kitties….we acquired our Finley a year ago when he was found abandoned under a construction site porch and was so small he could probably fit in a coffee mug then! We had him vet-checked, vaccinated, and neutered….and we have survived his “childhood” (naughty little boy in nursery school who goes “Na-na-na, can’t catch me” to the teacher!) Now he is going thru his “teen” years….rambunctious, full of energy, and sassy! We were not planning on taking on another cat, but when daughter brought him home and he curled up on my chest and started purring, I was hooked! I’ll have to send a photo or two to Jeanne if she wants to post it. We have also discussed not putting up our Christmas tree in the living room this year again, but maybe our other table 4 ft. tree with white lights out on the porch in front of the window, like we did last year! My youngest daughter and her hubby have just acquired two more young cats , “Cappy” (for Cappuccino) and Georgy, which now brings her total to 13 cats!! And they have all adjusted to each other and only occasionally do they swat at one or the other. They love cats and have a huge home and are helping to send their vet’s children thru college!!
Linda…I totally understand about your not feeling like making crafty things as you might have in the past. I told my daughters that I have noticed a “shift” in my energy and faster-pace of working on projects in the last two years. My mind feels like it was in my 20’s and 30’s and beyond, but the body often says now….”I need a little nap”….and I don’t feel like pushing myself to accomplish so many things as quickly as before. I still enjoy doing art work and sewing but not at the same pace. And yes! I have done scrapbooking! Only now I use my scrapbooking papers, trims, double stick adhesive tapes to create the dozen or so Birthday cards each year for family. They seem to look forward to what this years cards will say to them…I have discovered a love of (decent) limericks online and seem to find one that pertains to each adult family members job or interests…and limericks lend themselves to accordion-folded homemade cards! Kind of like the old “Burma Shave” signs that used to stretch out on roads, to be read as you passed each sign!
I had to laugh at the lollipop tree. Wouldn’t it be fun to decorate it for Christmas, and see what the HOA does?
And I loved those Burma Shave signs as a kid on those very long car trips. 🙂
Has anyone seen Ruby Red’s new doll, Heidi? Here is the link: https://rubyreddolls.com/products/heidi-fan-edition She is sure cute. Ships in late January (pre-order now thru 10/24) My birthday is late January. Hmmmm…😉
If the link doesn’t work, try https://www.thebeeskneesbritishimports.com and look for Felt So Good. Felted Christmas ornaments, mostly animals, One is a mouse dressed as Emmeline Pankhurst.
Charlotte, thank you for sending the link to Heidi. I would love her but she isn’t in the budget, unfortunately.
I was really concerned when I was waiting for my hip operation and on BP medication, my ankles were really swelling and it was pretty unusual for me. Once I came off it the swelling went down. It did come back when I went to England, they didn’t like the hours on the plane.
Linda, look forward to seeing your photos.
Elizabeth, I tell people that in my head I am still 40 then my 81-yr old body says ‘No you’re not’ lol.
I have my guild meeting this morning and I have to leave at 9 so short today. I quilted both remaining borders and now I am working on the corners of my quilt. I hope to finish those today (this afternoon) then join them to the main quilt. Then just the binding to do. I might have a photo next week.
Jeanne, will keep praying for you both. It is a tough time for you.
Have a good day everyone

Looking forward to seeing your quilt finished Charlotte. I am not sure how it happened but I made two extra blocks for the quilt I am making. I might put them in the backing, maybe use one as the label.
yes! I save extra blocks and often use one for the actual quilt, and others I can use “however” – I have piles of blocks 😝

When we do go out, I always promise her we will be back in 10 minutes 🥳
Oh! sill me: here is the webpage https://singer-featherweight.com/pages/schoolhouse
Tks on the page. I’ll take a look.
I’m going to look at that page, too, Rosemary, as I also have a Singer Featherweight. It was made in 1948, so is two years younger than I am!
What an amazing dad you had. What a blessing for you – and for future generations – that he stayed so on top of things.
I miss him like crazy… my mom too.😭
Jeanne, sending prayers for George.
Hmmmm…😉
Yes, and Catatonia, I think I spelled it right, is still available too. Both are lovely dolls. Would be a perfect gift for you. 🙂
I wanted something cheerful for today’s post, and The Bee’s Knees British Imports has provided it
