Hi everyone and wishing you all a Happy 4th of July tomorrow! I hope you have fun things planned but I hope they include air conditioning, water, popsicles, swimming pools, and anything else that keeps you cool.
The heat index was 109 degrees outside this afternoon and of all things, I found myself pondering if that idea of cracking an egg on the sidewalk, and it frying, was really true. If I hadn’t been so tired and it hadn’t been so hot, I would have liked to give it a try… maybe another time.
Okay, so today, this will just be a simple post of pictures a few of you sent me.

Here are some pics of my recent Ruby Red girls. Left is Arina and right is Sugar. Arina is wearing her new sandals since it’s pretty warm today. She came with white boots which didn’t seem to fit with the cute outfit. Anyway, she did take a tumble off the bench while I was adjusting Sugar, but recovered quickly. Maybe that is why she isn’t smiling. 🙂

Jeanne… I’m sending you the photos I have of a Birthday card I made for my Granddaughter, which I posted about today since several gals talked about making your own greeting cards! My Granddaughter just graduated with her Masters in Healthcare Administration and is working as a dietician!
The inspiration for this card came from using the artwork small prints of retro-women that my daughter had ordered for me from Temu! The sticker at the bottom of the insert with the limerick also came from Temu in a package of assorted sayings. When I make my own cards, I often make the envelopes, if I don’t have purchased sizes that fit, on hand.

I think right now we in the Seattle area are having about the coolest temps anywhere in the U.S.! I think our HIGH today was only 65, and we had some light showers late this afternoon. It’s supposed to get to 75 for the 4th of July. We shall see. I don’t have any special plans for that day, but we do have a potluck at church after service on the 5th. And Daniel will be back down on Monday to do some yard work for me (he met me at IHOP for dinner with our friends tonight).
Linda G., I so enjoyed your doll pictures. In the first picture, are those representing different countries? It kind of looks like they might be. And Arina and Sugar are so cute! Sugar has such a cute, impish face! You just know she is planning some mischief, and her sister isn’t quite so thrilled about it!
Anne, your card is wonderful! I haven’t tried doing any with a fancy fold like that. Yet! I love how you framed each picture, and the limerick inside is very cute. Thanks for sharing!
Jeanne, I’m glad to hear you and George are safely home again after your emergency run last night. I hope your weekend is peaceful and restful, for both of you. You continue to be in my prayers.
Charlotte, I would like to take credit for the card but it was Elizabeth in Texas who made it. I am not so clever. Besides, Sam is the card maker in our family, you know the old saying, “Why keep a dog and bark yourself” lol
Oh dear, I am sorry. You are right And sorry Elizabeth, for my error!! I must have been half asleep when I wrote that last night!! (I sometimes do doze in front of the computer, if I’m sitting on the sofa.) My apologies.
I’m so glad that you and George are home again, Jeanne, and I hope taking it easy, not going g outside either! I saw and shared a funny thing on FB the other day, something a bout the National Weather Service was sending out instructions on how to make lasagna in your mailbox, which I bet could be done!😊. This heat is just unbearable!
Linda G., what a wonderful display of storybook dolls! You certainly do have quite a few, and all SL perfectly dressed! Each one is so detailed and you have them set up in the perfect spot!
Joy, your new dolls are the cutest things! I too, love that impish smile on Sugar, and her outfit is darling! Ari a has such pretty, long red hair, and a cute dress to match! Are those sandals from Cottontail? Love the daisies in your garden too!

Arina’s sandals are, from Cottontail. Thanks on the girls and the yard daisies. I’ve been trying to weed out blackberry and your favorite blind weed 🙂 that keeps returning amongst them. It may be a hopeless battle.
MY FAVORITE,……. Bindweed?? It is all over at the entrance of our subdivision, which I had just cleared off several weeks ago. You just cannot get rid of that stuff!
Horrible stuff. I must say, though, that one of the gardeners I had used to be very diligent about digging out the root and while I have lots of weeds, I don’t remember seeing much bindweed. I will have to look
I was kidding you about the Blind weed. Only way that I can see is to spray it, which I really don’t want to do.
So glad that you and George are home, prayers continue!
We are leaving out the door to go to the springs in a big boat my son ordered. It has a huge top where the kids can climb up and slide down. I will send more info and photos next week.

I need to unpack all of my dolls, so many were in the curio that still remains empty.
They are still wrapped up. I have many, but one… I regret, I discarded because Christina did not want her. Christina made Clara Barton out of an apple (for her head) and a cone that she dressed. I kept her for YEARS in my china cabinet and she still looked great, even though kind of “dead” too.

Today hubbs and I are going to the old house to do a pile of chores. Clean out.
I am bringing the big ladder. We might go in two cars and take some things to throw into the dumpster down the road in our neighborhood where some apartments are going to be built at some point.

Kitty Princess loves the screened in porch. It reached 100º in the afternoon, in the shade on the porch. I ordered some heavy duty long curtains to hang on two parts of the porch to block the late afternoon sun. The neighbor has rolling shades, and that seemed like a great idea, but I think shades are annoying…. so I had to think about this for a while. I finally found some amazing curtains that are pretty thick. I got them in sage green. I hung them with tension rods, but I will put up some fancy rods in the future and curtain rings etc. I am pleased with the look. I have curtains for two of the screened sections but I only hung one set using the 6 foot ladder, I was sweating bullets!! I think it looks pretty romantic.

I do hope that George and Jeanne had a restful night and that the weather decides to cool off a bit. Seeing the temps across the nation are staggering. And here, like Charlotte, it has been relatively comfortable most days. Fog is in this morning but should burn off later and will probably be around 79 today. There is a big fireworks show planned in San Francisco, tomorrow. They are closing the Golden Gate Bridge for a couple of hours so that they can shoot fireworks off the bridge in celebration of 250 years. Except, it will probably be foggy so maybe only be a display of colors in the fog. But, you never know there about the fog.
As to Jeanne, and frying an egg on the sidewalk, my mother always talked about doing that. She lived in St. Louis, until the third grade when she moved with her family to CA. So, I’m not sure where she was living when this occurred. But, it was hot for sure.

I really wanted to get a pic of Arina and Sugar with my other latest RRed Jolli kids, but only got so far as to actually open their boxes yesterday and get them dressed. Well, they are real cuties and even though they can’t pose as well as those with more joints, they are fun. They are dressed at least and I am hoping to get back outside today and snap a few pics. Hopefully, not in the direct sun like the ones above of Sugar and Arina. Sorry for the shadows.
Other than more yardwork, I’m not sure what we want to do yet for the 4th. Other person is trying to cut the calories, finally, so having a bunch of food around is not so appealing to him. I guess we’ll figure something out today. I hope that everyone has a great weekend and a Happy 4th of July to all!

The Joli kids have their heads that move around, arms and legs attached to the body and they move. But, that is it. No moving elbows, wrists, or knees. I’ll try to get a pic or you can look them up on the RubyRed doll site and see them close up. There are quite a few to choose from. I understand that they can wear Paola Reina doll outfits, but RRed has outfits and shoes available too.

Having seen several doll displays celebrating America’s 250th, I wondered what I could do with what I have around. Kit is already in a Colonial dress and Kirsten is wearing her immigrant outfit. But somehow that wasn’t enough.
My grandparents had bought me small dolls as they traveled and as an adult, I continued to collect them. I first pulled the ones from Colonial Williamsburg with the Betsy Ross flag, then added the pioneers and the American Indians. Had to have a Scandinavian gal to represent our immigrant history, and then the friends from China, South America and Africa. Kit and Molly’s 48 star flags joined the group, and then the current 50 Stars and Stripes found a place.
May God bless America with wisdom and care for one another as we all live together. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Happy 4th of July and America’s 250th birthday to all my Sofa Sisters. Often we try to make the parade, concert, and fireworks in town. I’m disappointed to miss at least the concert and fireworks this year of all years, but it is going to be just TOO TOO hot and even through there are trees in the glen for the concert and fireworks it will still be too oppressive.
We will relax at home with the kitties. They will be happier anyway. We are usually able to see the very highest fireworks from the front porch.
Just saw your comment yesterday about George having surgery. I’m so glad it was caught quickly and you are both back home. Prayers for you both until the follow up is scheduled.
Sorry you are going to miss some of the 4th of July festivities this year due to the heat. It’s always hot here, but as long as the sun is down I can tolerate the heat/humidity and often we have a nice breeze in the evening so it shouldn’t be too bad for us. My Chorale concert tribute to the 250th anniversary was last Saturday evening and everyone seemed to enjoy the program but it was inside, although with that many people even in a gym I felt I was roasting on stage.

I usually check in with the blog before going to bed but didn’t yesterday so i missed the comment about George not being able to have the scheduled surgery. I am so sorry to hear he ran into another problem with getting his situation solved, but I am glad they could do the surgery in town and that you are home again. Definitely time for getting some serious rest. I continue to pray for you and hope that your life returns to normal soon.
Wow! That first doll picture from Linda G. is very interesting and seems to cover a lot of territory. And Joy your two dolly girls are adorable. Sorry about Anna’s mishap that kept her from smiling in the pictures. Hopefully she is over things soon and there is no lasting damage to her body.
We are doing something different this year for the 4th since it is a special event this year. We usually go to Sean and Dionne’s for dinner and then watch a movie till it gets dark. Then we go outside in their driveway and do sparklers and other fun things. They live in the county so it’s legal there. But this year I’d been hearing that some of the fireworks displays are going to be special for the 250th anniversary. I remember the ones from 1976 and the technology has improved since then so I’m looking forward to some great displays. Unlike some of my Sofa Sisters I love, love, love fireworks. From the very first time I remember when I was about four years old and my dad coming into my bedroom and wrapping me up in a blanket and taking me up the hill to the family workshop in Pottsville, PA, and I sat on a sawhorse and watched my very first fireworks experience, I’ve been hooked. We used to go all the time when Skyy and Jaiden were small but came up with the other idea during COVID so Azure has never seen fireworks except at New Year’s on TV. He loves them. Can’t wait to see what he thinks in person. He’s 5 1/2 now so I doubt he’ll be scared. But I do have a problem with my neighbors shooting off firecrackers, etc., all night long, especially since they are not legal here in town.
Elizabeth your card is amazing. You are so creative and actually get things done. I really enjoy seeing your creations. I know you’re granddaughter will be thrilled.

I think you have the same problem with fireworks on July 4th as we do on November 5th, It doesn’t get dark until 10pm so very late for small children. And don’t get me started on why, at the bottom of the world we celebrate a failed assassination attempt of a Parliament 12,000 miles away and 400 years ago! At least you have a reason to celebrate. Next weekend (Friday) is a public holiday here for Matariki, a Maori winter festival. There will be fireworks then, I am sure. I won’t be watching though, it wouldn’t bother me if all fireworks were banned.
Linda your dolls were lovely, very appropriate for 4th July and Joy, Arina and Sugar are lovely, you obviously found a weed free area to take a photo! Actually your garden sounds like painting the Forth Bridge, When I was growing up it was a joke that any task that was never ending was like that. When they finished painting it took so long that they just went back to the beginning and started painting again.
I haven’t quite finished the quilt I was binding. I have about 1 and a half sides to finish. I’ll try to do it this morning but I will take it to guild anyway and try to finish it there. I will show it anyway.
Sam has bought another cutting machine with lots of dies!! you know what I have said about my fabric, that I will never use it all in my lifetime? Well Sam has so many dies that if she makes one card from every die, she will never use them all!!!

Tks on my girls and the yard with way too many weeds. 🙂 I’m with you on fireworks. They are illegal here in fire country, but idiots shoot them off anyway and fire guns too. Crazy, I know. The local fireworks show is at the fairgrounds where they shoot them off responsibly so everyone can enjoy them without the danger of starting a fire in dry grass. All the dog owners hate it when irresponsible people go ahead and set off their private fireworks illegally and scare every dog, cat, bird, deer whatever to death. Our neighbor has to tranquilize her little pup Winnie, she gets so scared. And they don’t just set them off on the 4th, but days before and after as well. They can be reported, but there are so many that it is like a needle in a haystack to find who is setting them off. People feel that it is their right to set them off and even sparklers for kids that can be dangerous and start grass fires. None at all are allowed, but somehow these people can’t let go of how it used to be when they were kids growing up. Things have changed so much and going through the big fires here makes everyone even more nervous on the 4th.

Well, I have to apologize to Elizabeth for miscrediting her beautiful card, and to Joy for not mentioning her name in my comments on Arina and Sugar! I guess I was really tired last night, and not paying much attention. It’s been quite a week–actually, as some of you know, quite a Month.
Rosemary, thanks for the links to the story and related items about the 1933 Sears quilting contest. So very interesting! I seem to recall having heard about it in the past, but not all the details. I really enjoyed reading about it, and looking thru the PDF of the booklet with the quilt patterns, etc.
I tried calling the endodontist this morning to make an appointment, and they are closed on Fridays, so I will call Monday morning. My pain is mostly just a dull ache, which is pretty well controlled with an extra-strength Tylenol now and then, but if I move my mouth wrong when I chew (even chewing on the opposite side), it really lets me know it’s there!! Ouch!
I’ve heard from CarStar, and, due to having to order in parts, my car won’t be ready until the 10th (originally they had said maybe the 2nd). I’m really glad I still have Ron’s car; we all know it’s more comfortable to drive a car you’re familiar with than a rental car you don’t “know”!!
