I was hoping to show something for the dolls…

Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a nice weekend and I hope the MEN had an especially nice day Sunday! I was thinking about all of you as Kristoffer came over and we were celebrating a pretty low key Father’s Day. It was nice, but still I was thinking of you all…

Here’s what I surmised in my head about what went on in some of your houses… :o)

~~ Joy had to go to Costco to get some easy to manage “finger” snacks so other person could use his OTHER fingers to eat them instead of using a fork. I’m guessing a corn dog and potato salad…of course he’d have to use his left hand for the fork. Hope his finger isn’t too painful!

~~ Linda was slaving away making her hubby’s favorite foods and hopefully she had some “Amish Pickles” made up and chilling in the refrigerator! I bet she made cookies for dessert.

~~ Sissy made Peyton Eggs Benedict early before church and then grabbed a peach pie out of her freezer and thawed it out and baked it for dessert. I’m guessing they had something “fishy” or “crabby” but that’s just a guess…

~~ I hope Rosemary gave Rex something other than one of his 4 sandwiches she keeps in the freezer. I’m sure she did! Maybe she had some cookies she could share with him.

~~ Barbara and David were probably still eating leftovers from the stuffed peppers and homemade spaghetti sauce they had the other night! I couldn’t think of what kind of dessert they might have, but I’m thinking something easy like caramel popcorn they could eat reclining in their chairs watching a movie together.

~~ Paula and her hubby maybe had leftovers from game night the other night. I hope there was enough left for today! :o)

Oh and us? Well, this is terrible, but I went to church and afterwards needed to return a waterer for the hens. The one we had bought was a dud, I guess. It started leaking 15 minutes after it was filled up with water… and got their coop floor all wet. Anyway, my hubby asked me if I could stop by the store and get some fish and maybe some potato salad. (I was really a bad planner this Father’s Day!) :o( I stopped by the store but the fish was all dried out and overly crispy. So I got some red skinned potato salad and drove to Burger King and got us a Whopper! Wasn’t that terrible? I don’t know where my head was when planning for today! Obviously, I had a BAD case of Brain Fog! BUT, he was happy and my sandwich was pretty good too!

Whatever you all had, I hope your men were happy and you too!

We had 3 long phone calls today, Kristoffer came over, I helped my hubby stake up some tomato plants, I watched the New Zealand/Egypt World Cup soccer game (Sorry Anne!) :o( We were in a tornado watch, it rained, and now it’s after midnight. So much for the sewing post…

HOWEVER, Marilyn sent me another blog post from a lady she enjoys. Joyce Vance is her name, and you may have read her last post about the chickens she has. She included a few pictures, and this is another one of her posts…called Thursday Night with Chickens

Thursday Night with Chickens
Joyce Vance
Jun 19

Tonight, chickens. They love this time of year, and I love them, so they get good treats. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw our biggest girl, Omeleta, jumping up and grabbing blueberries off of our bushes last weekend. I believe she has made her way through just about all of them by now. But we still have plenty of basil, cucumbers, and a little store-bought corn and watermelon for everyone else.

Toot really loves corn, and she can be mean to anyone else who gets close to an ear she’s claimed.

I planted a little grass around the coop as soon as it got warm this spring, and after some initial concerns (“Is it safe to walk on this stuff, Mom?”) they’ve become accustomed to having their picnic tables on it.

Omeleta is definitely today’s chicken “It Girl.” She ate some of everything, came over for a chat and a cuddle, and then, this pose! Is she auditioning to be the new face of Civil Discourse. Should we let her?

Some nights, it’s important to take a little time off and have some fun. This is one of those nights for me. I’m making hot fudge sundaes with friends and turning in early. I hope you’ve got something on your agenda of joy tonight too!

We’re in this together,
Joyce

Thanks Marilyn,
I guess today’s post was really about eating all the things we all love! We’ve been eating lots of watermelon around here too… but those hot fudge sundae’s Joyce mentioned sounded wonderful!
Thanks for helping me out…

See everyone tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh sure Jeanne, “slaving away, making her hubby’s favorite foods!” You were really off the mark in THAT one! We went to church with our daughter, who had cantor duty that mass, had a nice phone call from our son in Denver, then, …..it rained, and rained and rained! So no grilling for us, just a frozen pizza that worked out quite well for the day. Easy peasy!

Loved the chickens! Wow, I thought the furry one in the second picture was a dog there for a second or two! What variety they are, and just beautiful! Thank you for sending those to Jeanne, Marilyn! Thank you, Jeanne for showing us!

  2. Charlotte Trayer

Well, Jeanne, I think if George was happy with what you go t him for Father’s Day dinner, yours was a success! Ron and I had some pretty low-key celebrations the last 2-3 years of his life, as he simply wasn’t up to anything real elaborate by that point. And that was okay.

Although it’s fun to watch videos of chickens, or at least see pictures, and I do have a cousin or two that have them, I don’t think I’ve ever actually gotten to “know” any chickens. My best friend’s parents were farmers, but they were dairy farmers, and I don’t remember them ever having chickens or other animals other than cows, dogs, cats, and the occasional horse. I have never been a horse person, preferring mostly dogs, frankly, but I can tell you that, as a child, I Did learn how to “strip” a cow!! That just means manually removing the last of the milk that the milking machine doesn’t get. It was a sort of strange feeling, expressing the milk from those little dangly things!! 😂

    Okay, enough silliness.

Daniel came down this morning to meet me at church. The bus didn’t get him here in time for the beginning of church, but a little more than halfway thru. However, after the service, we had a lovely concert by an ensemble from the West Coast Baptist College, so he got in on that. A trio of young ladies sang, accompanied by a young man on the piano. There was also a solo by the professor’s wife and the professor (who had been a pastor and a missionary previously) gave a brief message. Afterwards we had an informal potluck lunch–sandwich makings, salads, and a light dessert.

I did talk to the pianist some right after the concert, as he was playing all his music off an iPad!!! How wonderful!! He could “turn pages” by merely touching the screen!! I think I need one of those….

I also bought four of their CDs, and will probably add one to each of my cars, to rotate thru the CDs I normally play when I drive.

Daniel and I took flowers to the cemetery, for both my dad and Ron, and then we went to Ace and got a new weedwhacker. When we got home, he worked outside for a while, then I packed some supper (pasta salad and ham) for him to take with him, and got him to the bus. And then I came home and slept for an hour!!

I hope everyone else had a good day today.

Peyton let me sleep too late this am so I am rushing around getting ready go to the Y.
Jeanne, I LOVE your ideas for all of us for Father’s Day. Peyton make the breakfast, “Toad in the Hole”, as he does every Sunday, but after church we went out to eat the same place my son took us on Mother’s day. Peyton had a plate of fancy oysters and I had shrimp and grits, and gave him half of mine. You were close about our dinner. I should have cooked one of my pies but was busy with my peach freezer jam.
You sound like you and George are a bit better, I continue to pray.
I have to run now, talk to y’all later.

    Love the chickens.

  4. Happy Monday dear ones!
It was a very perfect week-end. Jeanne, thank you for your fun imaginings!
You made me laugh!!! I am so sorry, Linda, that you had rain the whole stinking week-end. I was checking the radar, and yes, you were getting buckets.
Jeanne, I am glad you managed to make it to church. How lovely to see friends. I hope your neck is getting better. Did you find another water thing for the chickens? I am happy you found sufficient Father’s Day cuisine – (we eat what we like!) I know George loved the Whopper!
Charlotte, you made me laugh too. Good memories. I did not grow up around farm life, but it was there and very interesting. Looking back, seeing what it is all about, I wish I took horse riding lessons. Rex and I watch a lot of Ryan Rose and Clever Cowgirl on youtube
Our week-end: Lazy. sort of. Hubbs has at least 15 mosquito bites. Horrible ones too. I have two bottles of lidocaine lotion that I help him put on the most annoying ones.
We paid the painters and the carpet people big fat checks – just half payment for the work being done this week!!! We cleared out the entire house. I was going to take photos of the empty house… but I forgot. Oh well, better to take photos of the “after the work it done” I can do that later this week, I think.
I met the nicest “handyman” Greg that installed fancy new exterior lights.
We got the upstairs toilet repaired 🙄. We have a guy coming next week to fix up the shower in the master bathroom. So, yep, we did a lot of other house stuff. Very boring. Yesterday I had video chat with my oldest daughter three hours away in Richmond VA. The grand girls are so fun and adorable.
I miss my younger daughter terribly.
I moved my Feather weight down stairs and made some cute American Flag bunting to hang on our screened in porch. Kitty Princess is an “outside on the porch kitty” now. She meows a lot, I hope the neighbors all around us to not complain.
Father’s Day, I did make hubbs a yummy hamburger, and a lemon cake with blueberries (Krusteaz + Walmart frozen blueberries!!! super yum) He watched indycar racing in Wisconsin both days, and we watched a bit of soccer. I do not usually watch soccer – it was on the tv, we are not even soccer people! Anyway, I am always moving, so I was doing chores and sewing of course.
Sissy, enjoy your day especially now with that extra bit of sleep. Hubbs wakes me up every morning at 8:00 on the dot. I wonder if I would sleep until 10AM? You two get up really early! I am envious of your dedication to the pool! Really excellent.
Thank you Jeanne for sharing Marilynn’s contribution: Joyce’s blog. Thank you Marilynn. Chicken life looks fun. Joyce’s chickens look beautiful, wow. What a lovely Chicken life indeed! Great photos, adorable story.
Love to all of you. This comment is long 😂

    1. Hi Rosemary,
It sounds like you’re almost done with the plans on your old house. Glad it’s coming along and hope it’ll be over with soon.
Kitty Princess sounds adorable from the stories you’ve told us about her. How old is she if you know?
Sounds like hubby enjoyed his Father’s meal!

      1. Hi Paula! Yes, I believe the realtor (she is working hard, she will get a huge tip for sure) said our target date to put the house on the market will be July 9th or something. I hope there are still some people left that want to buy a house.
Kitty Princess is 8 years old. She is a cornish rex breed, and only weighs 7 pounds. She has blackish grey ripply furs and a few black whiskers and fleshy naked skin near her ears, she looks a lot like this kitty: https://www.facebook.com/PixelAndSophie/posts/people-ask-me-about-pixel-sophies-unique-cornish-rex-fur-every-day-and-many-are-/1275974467863283/

Princess reminds me sometimes of “Mooch” from the comic Mutts. She meows a lot 😂 for example, now that she is an outdoor screened in porch kitty, we have the sliding door cracked open just wide enough for her 4.5 inch body to easily fit through the door to come in, and she does now and then, to scream at us about coming outside to be with her. She will just come inside, meow a lot, then turn around and go back outside 🥰. I am sitting outside right now with her.

I bug proofed the screened in porch enough that we have not had any invaders. The screened door reveals that the concrete was installed with a slight slope so the screen door has an uneven gap. I found a band new door white sweep in the basement of the old house, and applied it to the bottom very close to the floor. So we do not have any huge spiders or lizards (which is a new critter here in Northern Virginia that I noticed) intruding and making my hair stand on end. I do use peppermint spray (from Walmart) around the perimeter of the porch, which is quite large I am guessing 12’x12′

Thank you, Rosemary, we were a bit late for the pool but it was ok. I have been working out in water for many years, after I realized that my knees got to the point where I could not go to dancing as an exercise. If it weren’t for the water exercise I don’t know what I would do. After getting back to the water when we got over our sickness I could tell my legs got stronger and stronger during the last 2 weeks.
So nice that you have a handyman to help! Peyton and I were just talking about all he did when we were getting our new house built back in 2000. He said he can hardly realize how did all that.

      1. Sissy, I am really glad you can make it to the pool.
I just bought a bathing suit from Walmart. It is made in China so it is coming on a boat or something. 😂 Then I can go to the pool. See, I do not feel like going to the store and trying on a suit because it will be frightening 😱 but I am pretty sure I will be returning this suit to Walmart…. and driving to the mall to actually buy a bathing suit. 🤷🏼‍♀️

        1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Rosemary I get my suits from Land’s End when they have lowered their costs. They fit really well.

  5. Joy in northern CA

Well, we didn’t go to Costco, yesterday, but did go to Habit. We’re having a delayed Father’s Day because grands are on a driving tour of northern CA and southern Oregon. So, we picked up our favorite at Habit, which is a small delicious salad with their house ranch dressing and grilled chicken with avocado wraps. It’s the Got to Havit current special and all including a large drink for ten bucks. We were happy. Pics we’ve received from the grands so far, looked like a lot of fun. Hiking into the waterfall at Burney Falls. Swimming in a lovely lake. Time spent in the lava tubes at the National Park in the far reaches of the CA/Nevada, border where they didn’t run into any of the rattle snakes that reside there, but did see a black cobra, if you can believe, and then on to Sunriver in Oregon, for watersports and horseback riding.
Other person’s swollen dislocated finger, is getting better and after finding extra large bandages for the skinned shin he also received in that trip, belly flop accident, he’s healing well.
Yesterday, I was looking around at where I could make an appointment for a bone scan after an online chat with our doctor at Kaiser. I was just checking to see if there were any appointments as a call to them has said they were booked until Sept. and to call them or go online in July. They had sent me one available, but south in San Rafael, which I did not want to drive all they way down to. Lo and behold, when I clicked on next available appointment, there was one for this morning. So, I snatched it up before anyone else also looking might find it. Then, I had other person do as I had done, but nope, no others available. I guess someone cancelled, so other person will have to wait a bit. Then, I had to scrounge for some clothes that contained no metal like Levi rivets. Found a sports bra, some baggy sweat pants, so with a tee, I should be completely unstylish, but good to go. According to the doctor, it’s been eleven years since the last one, but we think that it has only been about five. Guess I’ll find out if I have any bones left. 🙂

    1. Hope the bones are all good, Joy. As busy and active as you are, you need good bones!
      Hope Other’s hand mends soon.
The kids trip really sounds wonderful. Glad they had no run ins with snakes.

    2. Every one is getting bone scans now!
I just learned that big pharma pays for those machines!!
I have osteopenia, but I do not care to take any of the new fangled drugs. My sister (two years older) started taking them and had some irreversible damage. Good luck with the bone scan.

    3. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Hoping for a good answer for your bones. I had mine done again about 4 years ago and the last time before that was about 25 years! my bones are small but they seem to work well. Tell that Other one that we hope you get all your scrapes healed soon.

    4. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Also, Joy, those photos you are getting from your family might be great things to send Jeanne to show us!

  6. Joy Lynne Carter

Awh! Just as I thought yesterday after you said you were thinking about what to post ‘Jeanne, we’ll eat whatever you give us and be so happy!’ I see so many ‘cat’ pix I never thought chickens could look so beautiful! Thankyou all for sharing!

  7. It was fun reading all of your guesses about everyone’s Father Day plans, Jeanne. It looks like alot of us had some low key plans.
I also enjoyed seeing the chicken pictures Marilyn sent. I’ve read some neat stories about how chickens like to be petted and how some are great, devoted pets. That’s the only way I’d like to see them live. However, I’ve never cared for eggs in any form to eat unless they’re mixed in with something like cake!
My husband organized what he wanted to do for Father’s Day. We zoomed with the kids – we really enjoy doing that with them, and he received some thoughtful gifts from them, not that he ever expects that.
Then, he played pool with a couple on his outside pool table. ( His baby!) Gregg belongs to two pool leagues. A year or so ago, in his retirement, he started playing pool- he found out it started as a French game- billiards. Bill means “ handle -stick.” He came to play this only a few years ago and he thinks, since he’s 97% French, that must be why he likes it so much. So we played pool – I seldom play it so I didn’t do very well and only ended up getting sunburned!
Then for dinner, we settled on frozen pizza adding our own spices- hot pepper seeds, chopped onions and a bit more mozzarella cheese. And we did have left over strawberry with crushed graham crackers, mixed with whip cream, from one of the couples we had over for game night. Btw, we girls lost both Sequence games with the guys Friday night. Boo!

I think American Girl had a chicken like the fuzzy one in the 2nd picture. I’ll have to see if I can find out what it was called.

HA! I asked Google for “fuzzy chicken.” It preferred “fluffy chicken,” and it looks like ours is a Silkie. The Orphingtons appear in Dorothy Sayer’s Busman’s Honeymoon, the last of her famous Lord Peter series. Here are 21 fuzzy/fluffy chickens. They should inspire George to expand his collection.
    ttps://dailychickens.com/fluffy-chicken-breeds/

While we’re on Dorothy Sayers, the Lord Peter books were a breakthrough. When she began writing, the plot was the big deal. The detective was a sort of idiosyncratic character that never changed. The story is that Dorothy Sayers met Marjorie Allingham, another mystery writer, on a train, and they agreed that their heroes were boring them. Allingham said she’d like to hit her Mr. Campion over the head, and in her next novel, she did. He started feeling as well as thinking. Lord Peter fell in love with a woman being tried for murdering her lover, turning him into an interesting 3 dimensional person. Plot AND character in the same book! Mysteries took a great leap forward.

Chickens and detectives! Who could ask for more?

  9. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

Thank you, Jeanne, for the commiserations on the game. I watched it in the Sports Bar at the Club over a nice lunch with my son. It is hard when you are playing the ref as well!! He let a lot of infringements go “to let the game flow”, pity that most of them were from the other side. Still, we were outplayed and I don’t hold out much hope for the next game against Belgium. On paper anyway, they are a better team than Egypt. There is always next time, 2030 is in Morocco, Spain and Portugal but it is the centenary year so there are special matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. I think it has got so big that no one country can accommodate all the games.

Marilyn, the chicken blog was great. We did have chickens once but we didn’t name them and they weren’t very good layers so eventually they had to go.

Father’s Day here is in September (first Sunday) but since my Dad died it passes us by. My Ex-husband hasn’t had anything to do with Sam and Darren since he acquired his new family and Sam’s ex doesn’t contact the children at all even though he only lives around the corner. I think Rob (my eldest) still contacts his father but Russell has given up, he felt it is very one sided and the other two have never been given his phone number.

I am within cooee of finishing the quilt. I finished the quilting yesterday morning (except I missed a couple of places) and threaded off all of the ends. Once I have fixed up the missed bits I only have the binding to do. It is 80 x 96 inches so very big! It fits on my queen size bed with about a 9 inch overhang each side. I will wash it before I take a photo then send it to Jeanne.

It is coffee morning this morning. I will try and get a photo of us sometime. We go to the coffee shop at the Richmond Working Men’s Club, it is a new building, the first one had to be demolished after the earthquake in 2011.
    Have a good day everyone

    1. SO NICE to hear from you Anne. I hope your day was wonderful.
Family is complicated. I am just so happy for you. You are content!
I am looking forward to the quilt when you are ready. I am sure it is a masterpiece!

    2. Joy in northern CA

A big congrats on the cooee of finishing the quilt. You are amazing! Really looking forward to seeing the quilt.
Sorry about the NZ loss. I’m sure they are disheartened.

Joyce Vance describes her work as “The intersection of law and politics. Chickens and knitting likely to sneak in.” I think she’s a lawyer, and I like that she doesn’t divide the world into intellectual vs, domestic or masculine vs. feminine. Her blog is on Substack and is called Civil Discourse.
