No update on George? This concerns me. I will bring this up at our prayer service tomorrow, Jeanne. I hope George will be able to go home from the hospital soon!

The birthday party looks like fun, and somewhat like my own were in the 1950s, only instead of Coke, I think we had 7-Up. Mom wasn’t a big fan of the colas back then, and there wasn’t a lot of money for “extras” like pop, so when we did get it, it was a real treat. I remember 7-Up, ginger ale (particularly Vernors–I’m a Michigan girl, you know!), root beer, and probably grape. Green River, too–yum!
In the schoolroom picture, I love Molly’s Tootsie Roll Pop lunchbox! I love Tootsie Roll Pops, even now, and will occasionally buy one for myself–but only the chocolate! I also have fond memories of Slinky, and what a novelty that was! Ours were metal, of course. We also had Silly Putty and Hula Hoops in the 1950s.
I think the last picture is my favorite, though–just about everything was something I had! The Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew books (yes, I’ve read both of the ones on display, and a number of others, too) were among my favorites (Bobbsey Twins, too), and of course Betsy McCall paper dolls!! My baby doll pajamas looked much like Sweet Sue’s. And I made an octopus like that, too–only as I recall mine was green!!

Linda G., what cute displays you have! You are probably younger than I am, so some of the things you used were after my time as a child, namely the Mickey Mouse outfit in the first picture. For sure tnere was a Mickey Mouse in the 40’s, but those ears were not a thing back then. Pin the Tail on the Donkey was a staple at birthday parties, along with Drop the Clothespins in the Bottle! I love that little record player too, and we had one of those for playing children’s records.
Your school scene is cute too, and yes, we wore saddle oxfords like those! Love the tin lunchbox too, and Charlotte, I also love chocolate Tootsie Roll Pops! In fact, I had a craving for those when I was pregnant with my daughter!
I had a Sweet Sue too, but with blonde hair, which I learned how to braid. Yes, I too read Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew books also! Thank you, Linda for sending these cute pictures!
Charlotte, I didn’t have Betsy McCall paper dolls when I was a child, but they came later on in the McCalls magazine. My favorite paper dolls were movie star paper dolls! I had Ann Blythe paper dolls and see that she just died recently.

Linda G. I too am older than most of your photos but they are so fun to see. I graduated from high school in 57, and then off to collage. I did love my dolls. I did read all the time and still do.

Today is my turn to make breakfast and it will be Peyton’s fave, eggs Benedict. Then Wednesday is making cookies for the Thursday church free lunch. After that I will clean another bathroom and work on some of my flower pots that need to be repotted. I have to think about these things to do or I would sit down in my comfy chair too long. I also need to get my photos from our reunion in Florida to Jeanne. The trouble is that the photos are from every one there and it is hard to figure out which ones without sending too many.
Thank y’all yesterday for the Birthday Wishes. We will go out to eat tomorrow on my day and have some good, fresh, seafood from the waters where we live.
Jeanne, as always, you and George are on our minds and in our prayers.

Jeanne, I hope everything is going smoothly for George. He has been in the hospital now for a while and I am sure he is getting tired of that. I hope he is not having any pain.

I love the party table! I had a few birthday parties as a little girl in the US. We really did not have such parties in Europe: Germany or France when we had a birthday. My mom did try to have some great parties for us with our little friends. I love all of the little things you have. (I love tiny things) Their sweet dresses and their hats, so sweet. I love your furniture and the porcelain poodle. I have a porcelain squirrel with a furry tail. (I have a lot of old stuff) I loved pin the tail on the donkey! How cute. Wow we are so lucky to have lived in the 50s and 60s…. lucky us!
Molly’s school room is great! I hope she does well on her math test! I love the tiny lunch box. This is a beautiful school room. Linda, you are very artistic!
The last doll I do not know of. She is beautiful though in her sweet summer outfit. She reminds me of my dear older sister that loved to read.

Today is going to be a very hot day. I am staying inside and sewing a 18″x18″ block of three peonies and leaves. I am using scrap fabrics and old fabrics as a test this time.
I have to read each step at least twice to be sure. there are 42 different cuts for fabric
necessary to assemble the block. When I finish it, I will take a photo and send it to Jeanne.
At this point, I have the top part done. … My fabric choices are “just okay” but this is a test pattern so I did not want to use my favorite fabrics and make incorrect cuts.
It is kind of fun. I will also continue doing house hold chores.
Kitty Princess stays out on the screened porch all day. She comes in now and then to encourage us to join her, I do but it is really hot. I got some thick curtains to use on the west side so the sun does not make the porch extremely hot.
I made brownies last night before bed. We are eating a brownie for breakfast. YUM

Lost my post. Maybe that is good. I think that I may have forgotten to type in my name correctly. Maybe it went into under consideration. And of course, I forgot to save it before sending. Too cranky this morning because it was so warm last night and didn’t get enough sleep.

Aw, we will miss your post, Joy, but it is ok, taking a break is ok.
It is hard to sleep when it is too warm. We turn down ours down at night, my hubbs gets so hot I have to have a blanket.
When I was going up we had no cooling but a fan. I would open the window and if the cool air from the ocean would blow in and I would go to sleep. But then in the middle of the night the ocean would go down and the air would be very hot and wake me. Times really change, but I do miss hearing the ocean at night.
My grandparents had separate bedrooms because they had totally different temperature needs. I always said you could grow orchids in my grandfather’s room and hang meat in my grandmother’s. In the dead of winter she would have a window open no matter the temp outside.
I know cranky. I have those mornings. Sorry it was too warm. Can you sleep in the room that has the window A/C unit you installed?
I would be sleeping in a cool room! I wake up too much when I am hot. I hope you get a better sleep.
I have lost comments too. It is very annoying, mainly because I was very verbose and typed out a long thought stream hahaha 😂

We are headed down south to our original home state. Interesting that the temps are somewhat cooler but of course more humid due to daily rain. Everything is so green.
Rosemary, the development has been rampant in some states much like you are describing, clear cutting and houses very close together. I don’t like living in an older home, the same age as the one you sold (congratulations) but the risk of new development is less likely.
I am also looking forward to a fresh seafood meal today as we will arrive at the coast around lunch time.
Joy, I am sorry that you are suffering this heat. It has been a summer for the ages.

Linda in St. Louis, you are not that much older than me!!! Mickey Mouse Club and the building of Disneyland in CA were 1955-56 big events. We visited my California grandparents shortly after and I was thrilled to go. When the grands started going to DisneyWorld, my doll got the set of ears I never had! That’s another fun thing about dolls… they get to do what we wished we could do.
No one so far, has commented on the dishtowel hanging on the chair and used to make a blindfold for “Pin the Tail.” Here in MN, we all used the flour sacks from the milling companies… Gold Metal Flour/General Mills. They were always too big and would slide down on our little faces which led to yelling “She’s peeking!”
Hot here for day number four. Flowers are happy. Keep cool, everyone.

Thank you, Linda G! I was reading what you said about The Mickey Mouse Club. It would come on about the time I got home from school. My younger brother loved it, he is 7 years younger than I and I would watch it with him even though I was too old for it and I didn’t care.

Yes, I remember making one of those yarn octopuses in the 70’s either in Girl Scouts or at camp.
Hi the post button too fast. I also got a Slinky one year for Christmas. I love the Nancy Drew books. That title was a favorite. I have numbers 1-43 of the yellow matte covers which are the same ones I read as a child in the mid to late 70’s. The first one I ever read was “The Ringmaster’s Secret”.
Yes, we went to Disneyland in 1974, I was six. I enjoyed it. I remember a lot of the fun rides.
Okay, a little less crabby now than when I lost my post earlier. So, as to Disneyland, we went in 1956, the year after it opened. I loved it. Fun rides, but nothing like today. I have no idea of my hat choice, but I’m sure that it wasn’t mine. I would probably have chosen something completely different, but mine was felt with a feather I think. My dad had a Mike Fink hat. Mike Fink was in a lot of Disney movies and was called the King of the Keelboat drivers, I think. I still have my original Disneyland map from 1956. 🙂
Earlier, I mentioned that I had a friend who had several of those great ceramic poodles that Linda showed us. She had a black poodle named Alfonse. Anyway, I also enjoyed seeing the octopus. I too had an octopi, only in blue. I remember we used to love taking out the braids and then doing them again. Simple pleasures of the 50’s. 🙂 Thanks for the memories.
Great pictures, Linda G. Having my birthday the day after Christmas I never had a birthday party, but I went to plenty of parties for others and they were just like this one. The school room reminds me of my first and second grade classrooms. Pretty sparse by today’s standards where there is so much going on everywhere in a classroom. No bare spaces on any walls. I would have been overwhelmed. I have all the Trixie Belden books. I read them all when I was young and had some of them but the ones I have today I found on eBay. I have the whole Nancy Drew collection and the Hardy Boys too and was going to give them to the grandkids, but they have their own series they read so the books stay here and they have but to ask if they wish to read them but so far no takers. As for the yarn octopus there were so many in our house over the years I can’t remember them all. I think most were white though and were named Braidy Murphy.
Commiserations to Georgina and her husband on France’s loss to Spain. France were the standout favourites to win the final so I think the bookies are at a loss now. My son, who was predicting France to win thinks the final winner will be the winner of today’s game between Argentina and England (two teams who have ‘history’ and hate each other). He wasn’t picking though! I won’t be able to watch the game live as we have a Guild meeting this morning so will watch it when I get home.
Our meeting this morning is a midwinter Christmas meeting so I have to take a plate. I will make my little cheese rolls, they all went last time.
Sorry I have been here so long and use Kiwi expressions without thinking. 52 years ago, when I had only been here for a few months I went to a function at the children’s school. The notice said ‘Ladies, please bring a plate’. I was pretty intrigued, why would they need a plate, and what size, a dinner plate or a tea plate? When I got there I found out I was supposed to put food on it! Fortunately there was a shop next door to the school and I bought some biscuits. That phrase has caught out many immigrants over the years.

I began life in the coal regions of PA and my parents were from there so many of my expressions came from there and baffled Texans when i first got here. Since then I’ve switched from “youse” to “Y-all” and also use the expression “fixin to” when I intend to do something. Colloquial expressions can be so much fun and there is even a site on the internet for Coal Region Expressions.
