Hi everyone,
Today’s question:
Do you know what your parents would have named you if they hadn’t named you what they did?
See you tomorrow,

Oh, I was so hoping for some kind of update on George’s condition, any possible further surgery, etc. Maybe one of the family members could give us an update, if Jeanne and George would be willing to do that? Just a thought. I know Jeanne is intensely focused on George’s illness and future recovery right now, and it might lift a bit of the burden from her.
Okay, on to the question!! And the answer for me is, YES!! I knew for many years what mom had wanted to name me–she frequently told me–but daddy is the one who named me! When the hospital called to let him know he had a daughter, he said “That’s my Charlotte Louise”! Charlotte, after his favorite grandma, and Louise after mom. (He once told me he had been thinking about that for a while before I was born.)
Years later–it was after I was married and we had Daniel, but before daddy retired from the active ministry so I would guess mid 1980s or so–I was up at their house for something. Mom was at work (when I went away to college, she went back to work at the phone company, and by the time I got married, she was working full time, and did until she retired) so it was just daddy and me, and we were talking about names. I don’t remember in what connection, but…anyway, daddy said, “I always thought my sister Ruth had a nice middle name. Did you ever hear what her middle name is?” and I said, “No”, and he said, “Annette”. And I said, “You know, daddy, you and mom really should have TALKED before I was born! Mom’s favorite name was Ann, and that’s what she wanted to name me, but you beat her to it!!” 😂
They’d had a boy’s name picked out–I guess they thought the first child should be a boy–but not a girl’s name! But 18 months later, my brother came along, and so they were able to use that for him. And, as I write this, today, 7/31, is Paul’s 79th birthday and I will be taking him and his wife for lunch!
Happy birthday to your brother. My middle name is Louise but I use my maiden name as a middle name now.
Oh my goodness, I do too! Rosemary D Bolton!
I have absolutely no idea why my parents named me Linda Ann! I never even thought to ask! The only thing I can think of is that when I was born, in 1942, Linda seemed to be a popular name, and I know there is no other Linda in the family that I could have been named after. My second name, Ann, well, various forms of Ann are on both sides of my family, plus that was my mother’s name. I guess they felt that Linda Ann went together along with my last name. Who knows?
Some of you might be happy to hear that I made an appointment to have my cataracts removed! I have no date for that, just a first visit, then will get the specifics. I have been putting it off for a year or so, so I am glad to get it over with. Driving is not fun when the lights blind you!
Good for you, Linda. Keep us posted on the Cataracts and I really hope the night lights will go away.
Linda, I hope the initial visit gives you courage and knowledge to help you get through this procedure. I will have to have that done soon… please keep us posted on this progress!
Good for you, Linda! You will be so glad to get them done, I just know it!!
Well, I do wish my mom gave me different names. Both of my names are from very older people on my grandmother’s side. My names are Lauretta Wandell .
My mom’s first name is Lauretta as well so that is how I ended up being called Sissy. Lauretta is my great-great-great grandmother, and Wandell was her maiden name. I have a very big picture of her on the wall. I wonder if my mom would have named me differently if her mother had not anything to say about it.
If I had had a girl I would have named her Christine and called her Chrissy. I have no idea would my mom or dad would have named me otherwise. My grandmother and her sister were named Alma and Clara Bell so I am glad they didn’t use those.
Once again we are headed for the Y and will get back to you when we get home.
I too am sorry we have nothing about how George is doing. We will just keep praying.
There is worse than Alma and Clara Bell. A previous Texas governor named his daughter Ima – last name Hogg. For years there was a joke that her sister was named Ura. But there was no sister but she had two brothers. Miss Ima was a very important person and philanthropist in Texas. If you get a chance read her history. It’s amazing.
Oh Barbara, what a sad name, I hope when she married it was not Hogg! We had several older ladies that my parents new and they had name just as bad. I wish I could remember those names.
She didn’t marry,
From WIKI After the birth of his only daughter, Jim Hogg wrote to his brother, “Our cup of joy is now overflowing! We have a daughter of as fine proportions and of as angelic mien as ever gracious nature favor a man with, and her name is Ima!”[3] Ima Hogg had no middle name, which was unusual for the time.[4] Her first name was taken from her uncle Thomas Hogg’s epic Civil War poem The Fate of Marvin, which featured two young women named Ima and Leila.[4][5][6] According to Virginia Bernhard’s biography of Ima Hogg, “there are some who believe that James Stephen Hogg … named his only daughter Ima Hogg to attract the attention of Texas voters” in a year when he was running in a close race for district attorney of the Seventh District in Texas,[3] which he won.[7][8] Alternatively, correspondence from Jim Hogg indicates he may not have been conscious of the combined effect of his daughter’s first and last names.[9]
Ima Hogg later recounted that “my grandfather Stinson lived fifteen miles [24 km] from Mineola and news traveled slowly. When he learned of his granddaughter’s name he came trotting to town as fast as he could to protest but it was too late. The christening had taken place, and Ima I was to remain.”[4] During her childhood, Hogg’s elder brother William often came home from school with a bloody nose, the result of defending, as she later recalled, “my good name.”[10] Throughout her adult years, Hogg signed her name in a scrawl that left her first name illegible. Her personal stationery was usually printed “Miss Hogg” or “I. Hogg”, and she often had her stationery order placed in her secretary’s name to avoid questions. Hogg did not use a nickname until several months before her death when she began calling herself “Imogene.” Her last passport was issued to “Ima Imogene Hogg.
Sissy, one of Ron’s grandmothers was named Melissa Loretta Fleischman, and I guess she hated the name Melissa, so always went by Loretta. To me, Melissa was the prettier of the two (and of course is very popular in our more modern times), but each of us has our own opinions about names!!
Good morning Jeanne and Sofa Sisters.
Today is supposed to be hot, so I’m hiding inside except I have a yearly checkup with my doctor mid morning. I cannot tolerate this heat and I sure hope people who have pets, don’t let them stay outside in it. We’ll be making sure the birdbaths are filled with fresh water. Our neighborhood has a deer ( maybe more) who come at night and disturb the bird feeders and birdbaths. We have a skunk, raccoons and bunnies who do as well. One deer actually takes naps in our yards in the day time!
Anyway, to the question of our names: I think I was named after an uncle named Paul, although I never asked if that was the reason. Then my middle name is June after the month I was born. I do not like my names at all.
My parents named my sister and I, names starting with the letter P. My older sister, Patricia ( Patty) and me, and my mother said her next baby would be named Pamela. But my brother, came next and they ended up naming him after my father, Arthur.
Since I don’t like my names, I’m very particular in naming my own children and my dolls!! Fortunately, my kids like their names
Paula is a pretty name. I think it means, devotion… or something.
We have a lot of Antonia’s and Petronella’s in our family tree and I am just grateful I was not named Petronella.
I like your name.
Thank you Rosemary for liking my name. It means “ small.”
Which is kind of cool as I like to think when people do small things for others, they are kind small needed things, which can mean a lot to someone or some thing.
I like your name too. And “small” can mean so many things. Barbara however means strange, foreign or foreigner but I’m good with that.
Yes, Paula, your name suits you. You do small super kind things for others that mean an awful lot to them. So in that case, your meaning should be generous and caring. 🥰😻
Small good deeds are good! Yes, that is you.
Paula has always been a name I liked. My cousin Paula is part of the prettiest branch of my family. She’s as nice as she is pretty, so what’s not to like? One of my most memorable students was a Paula. The class liked itself so much that on the last day, no one wanted to leave, and Paula thought of the words that released the class on the perfect note.
I will chime in about your middle name: My best friend’s name is June (although she was born in August) and she is one of the dearest sweetest people I know, so I love that name! And, coincidentally, my brother’s name is Paul, and I have a former sister-in-law named Paulette!
Dear Jeanne. I hope you and George are doing so well, I hope your days are smooth.
Your questions are wonderful.
My full name is Rosemary Joan. My maiden name is de Leeuw.
When I was little I did not think much about my names. One day my mom asked me (I was 10 maybe) if I liked my name. I do not remember what I said.
I have two older sisters – oldest Dorothy Fay (pretty name, she is in Heaven now. Died from smoking, she had an aneurysm at age 48) then Joyce Ann, and then I came along and then 5 years later, oops Johnny was born. I do not know why they gave us these names. They were very much American/English names. My father has searched our families on both sides dating back to the 1600s. (amazing how far we have come, right) and I do not recall any Rosemary like names. Obviously John was named after my dad, Johannes.
I do not know why I never asked my parents why they named us these names. I like my name. I love names and there are so many beautiful ones.
There are some VERY bad names too. I worked as an RN in an orthopedic surgical practice long time ago, and living in the “Washington DC area” we had three offices and I did indeed travel to all of them. There were some very very very bad names, also some really hilarious names. All of them were English language names of course, just terrible ones. 😂
Today, in about two hours, our buyers go to settlement and buy our house. This sale has been quite unique. [People here in the Washington Area, DC Maryland and Virginia, are very wealthy, they have high level jobs, and many dual income families with high level jobs. Loudoun County Virginia became the wealthiest county in the US! (hubbs and I are not “wealthy”)]
So, The family… that is buying our house. They lived in our neighborhood for 12 years in a smaller house, a nice house really, only several streets away! Just this last JUNE!, They put their house up for sale and it sold quickly. It “showed” really well, and they did very well.
Shortly after, they purchased a larger house one street away from our old house. Same kind of house as ours, large lot but the property lines were questionable with “vacant land” behind it. Lo and behold, a notice came out that the property behind this house they bought in JUNE was going to be developed with a little crammed in neighborhood. It has not been approved by the county but the home owners all along that property line are kind of freaking out. So OUR buyers of that house, last month, in June freaked out too. What did they do? They went looking for another house. They put a bid on our house.
Our first bid from another buyer (offer#1) had an escalation clause, meaning that if another person bids, they go $5K higher – I guess they wanted the house. Then offer #6 – the couple that are buying our house, out bid them, and buyer #1 would have bid higher but there was some problem with the banker not working on Sunday, Anyway, in the end, this young couple #6) won the contract because of that error on buyer #1s part – and buyer #1 was responsible for escalating the price $100K over asking!!! Just wild and a little bit shocking. So now you know this funny story. This is real estate in Loudoun County.
Today I am working on my Lemoyne star sew along. I am behind. the needle turn applique is not my best ability. So that is yesterday’s project, still in progress. Today is the last lesson where we make a english paper pieced Lemoyne star. That I can throw together fairly quickly. I need to check the forecast for rain and probably water my small gardens.
I hope all of you have a happy day today. I will be sewing and perhaps doing some chores too.
After Christine (Chris), Mark, and Adam, my parents wanted to name the next boy Paul, so that would have been my name had I been a boy. No other boys came (except maybe for the lost baby); the rest were girls. I guess you could say that a Paul came later, since that is my husband’s middle name and also his father’s first name.
Well, it is Friday, and no update on George’s condition. I can’t imagine all that Jeanne, is doing being his advocate. It is so nice that there are questions for us to discuss though, in her absence.
We had a big scare late yesterday. I had just finished making Zucchini/Jack casserole and had it in the oven. I popped open the front door to see if Charlotte, was done with her snack and wham! I was hit with horrible smoke. The sky was brown and the smelled of burnt wood. It looked like it was coming from right over the hill, so panic set in. Those memories of the 2017 fires here do not go away. I yelled at other person to check it out. He agreed that it looked like it was close. So, I hopped on the computer and checked the fire department page. It said that the fire was up the coast and to not call 911 to report a fire as everyone was doing that and clogging up the emergency system. So, I went to watch duty and found that yes, it was quite far away but blowing directly our way. Apparently, the smoke here wasn’t quite as bad as the town south of us who were getting a direct hit from the wind. Anyway, with the heat crazy hot, we had to leave the windows closed or suffocate from smoke. This morning, it is a little better as it isn’t down to the ground. My eyes are very scratchy though. Hopefully, they will be able to control the fire soon. It was scary.
As to how I was named, I never heard the full story, but being an only child, I can only guess that my mother was happy to have me. My middle name is Joann, not pronounced Joan, so I was Joy Joann. Everyone tries to put an E on the end of Joann, but that isn’t correct. My mother also said that she wanted a short name for me since my last name was long with eleven letters. My middle name is after my mother’s sister Joanne. My mother didn’t want the name to be exactly the same. My mother’s grandmother was Joanna, so that played into it as well. My mother always said that if she had another child, she was going to name it Bliss! I was always thankful that name wasn’t chosen for me.
For whatever reason, another long awaited doll is on the way here via Chicago, yet again. So, hopefully, next week he will arrive from his long journey.
And on to the weekend. Hope that it is good for everyone. I’ll be thinking of Jeanne and George, and hoping that there is improvement.
I am very excited that you are awaiting the arrival of yet another cute adorable doll! Joy, you are so lucky!!
I like your name Joy Joann. Very sweet. I am also very glad that you were not named Blizz.
I have several friends with kind of weird names. One is Precious 😅
I can not recall the other names… lemme think.
Tks on the name. I’ve enjoyed it except at Xmas when they would sing Joy to the World and everyone would laugh. 🙂
I know someone named Precious, too, Rosemary! She was the niece-in-law of my dear friend Joyce. Precious told me once that her parents had lost a baby girl before she (Precious) came along, and she thought that was why they named her that.
The new waitress at our IHOP is named Beautiful! And she is, too. She has pretty, dark skin and lovely dark hair, and a sweet nature.
JOy, my older brother and his family moved away from CA because of just what you are going through. Their home was up high so they weren’t worried about the fires so much but most of their summers they had to have all the windows closed and no Air conditioning.
They sold the house that they loved and moved to Long Island where her family lived.
The climate here is close to perfect most of the time. We love that we can have open windows with breezes and fog to cool us off. However, wildfires are something that we can’t control. Tomorrow the wind is changing so the smoke will blow away. 🙂
Betty and Bobby! My parents named my brother and me after two of their favorite friends, I was told, because they liked these names! I was named Elizabeth Ann and my brother was named Robert Allen on our birth certificates…but as children we were called Betty and Bobby. But by the time I turned 15 and entering high school, I started going by Elizabeth and writing that on all of my paperwork. My friends called me Liz though. My parents weren’t angry or anything and they too started calling me Elizabeth. My Dad mentioned one day that he thought I had changed it to Elizabeth because of Elizabeth Taylor! That was the furthest thing on my mind then, I told him. I do know that I can remember my mother calling me Betty B…… (my maiden name) whenever she wanted something and it might as well have been BETTY BOOP for the way it sounded to me! So I kept Elizabeth for the following years but I will say, that I think it was hard for my brother, and aunts and uncles to start calling me Liz or Elizabeth. And if any of them still called me Betty, it did feel easy to respond to them.
When it came to naming my daughters, I wanted names for them that could carry them into their adult years and the work force someday, so it was Susan, Joyce and Beth! But when they were little girls or until ages 9-10…it was Suzy, Joycie, and Bethy! Go figure!
My daughter Beth still brings it up sometimes when we’re all together that she is SO grateful I didn’t give her the middle name of Leilani! I loved the name and the way it rolled off of the tongue, but she was named Bethanie Laurel instead! I do remember the nurse coming into the hospital room to request the baby’s full name and she questioned the spelling of Bethanie instead of Bethany…and I quickly responded…she is not “any” Beth, but Bethanie!
And I am proud to say that all of the girls are in good positions with their employment, in the “working world”! One is a Dean of a Library, another is a Director of Nutrition Services at a hospital, and one does the insurance details/and sterile room technician for an oral surgeon…who I might add often calls her Joycie!
Wonderful story, Elizabeth.. I love how your daughters are successful too. Pretty names too. My daughters are Christina Helen, Christina being my maternal grammas name and Helen is a variation of my mother’s name, Lena.
Elizabeth Ann was named…. um, I do not remember if I named her after anyone, but Ann is my sisters middle name so I gave that middle name to Lizzie too.
I made up silly names for my daughers, Blizzard, Blizpuff and Christina I always called her Christabelle at home. Or Teenbelle.
Elizabeth, I named my sons Robert and Thomas so they could have good adult names, not nick names like my brother, “Sonny” and me “Sissy”. As children they were Ronny and Tommy, so that was fine, but now they are very grown men and still call them selves those names. They even have them on their cards!
At least you weren’t Sissy and Bubba. Those seem to be names attached to most of the sisters and brothers in the South.
My mother named me Barbara because she liked the name and it was popular at that time. But my sisters were more interesting. My sister Beth is actually Elizabethanna after my mother’s Godmother. Mother did not like the nickname Liz so she called her Beth so she now had to Bs, Barbara and Beth. Beatrice came along a few years later and was named after a good friend of my mother’s from her Army nurse days. Now we had three Bs and they thought that was the end. Then five years later along came my youngest sister. It was decided to stick with the Bs so if it had been a boy his name would have been Brian but since it was a girl she was named Beverly Jean. Our neighbor and her Godmother was named Betty Jean and everyone called her BJ so they thought calling Bev Little BJ would be cute but it didn’t stick. Then we moved and it would not have mattered anyway.
cute names, Barbara!
Well this is a fun question. I’m an only child as well. My name is Laura Anne (Anne spelled with an E :-)).
My mom had never known anyone named Laura. There were two elderly (in the 80’s) sisters at church. One named Laura and the other Lydia.
My mom loved Laura and my parents debated between Anne (for a dear family friend Anna and Anne of Green Gables (from my mom I suspect as she loved the books as a girl). (They, and Little House were the first childhood big book I read at six or seven) and Elizabeth for my maternal great- aunt. Apparently, it couldn’t be decided so it was drawn out of a hat. 🙂
Had I been a boy, my name would have been Nathaniel David. Nathaniel from Nathaniel Hawthorne and David because my mom liked the name.
VERY interesting story about your beautiful name, Laura. When I was a little girl, we used to play house and for some reason we had to pick a name to be this member of this play house family. I always chose Laura or Laurie.
My sister used to get mad that I always picked that name 😂😂😂😂😂 both of my sisters were always so crabby😂
So sorry you had crabby sisters, Rosemary. Laurie is my nickname that my parents and grandparents always called me.
That should have said (in Their 80s) considering I was born in 1968!
If I’d been a boy, I would have been Richard Leon. When my brother was born, they named him Kenneth Lee, so their minds or tastes must have changed. My parents had military friends who wanted to name their daughter, if their baby was a girl, Marilyn Elaine, which was going to be my name if I was a girl. I was born first, so I got the name, and the other baby was called Merlin Elaine. Why both sets of parents didn’t realize that after the war, we might not ever see the other family again, I don’t know, but I’ve met Merlin only once, when we were about 40, and I think neither of us would have cared if we both had the same name.
My Dad didn’t know anything about me until I was 2 months old so unless they had discussed the possibility of names before I was even conceived, I guess my name had input from my mother’s family. I was named Phyllis (which I hate), I think, after my mother’s sister who died when she was 8 months old. I have no idea where Ann came from but I added the e many years ago because Iiked it better that way.
When I was 13 we moved to Huddersfield and I started at a new school. When I got home my dad asked me what I had told them my name was. I thought it was a funny question so I said ‘Phyllis, why?’ ‘I thought you would have told them Anne’ he said. Obviously I was surprised, I didn’t realise I could have done that. It was too late for school but when I left and went to work I called myself Anne and I have been that ever since. The family called me Phyllis for a very long time but when we came to NZ and Mum and Dad came too, They eventually called me Anne because everyone else did. My Aunty Sylvia, who is 92 still calls me Phyllis but all my cousins use Anne now.
NZ won all their games at the Commonwealth Games netball so they are playing their semi final tonight at 8pm. Unfortunately Canterbury are playing Auckland at 7pm in the NPC (National Provincial Championship) Rugby! Thank goodness for record options! I think it will be a late night.
Here it is wet cold and windy today. The older kids have a bin outside their rooms for cans, someone is collecting them for recycling, unfortunately the cans don’t have any weight to them and the bin blew over last night and they are all over the back lawn. It could have been worse it could have been a rubbish bin! That would have been a nasty clean up.
Joy, I really hope the fire doesn’t reach you. Fire terrifies me. We will pray for you as well as for Europe at church tomorrow.
Jeanne, I really hope no news is good news re George’s condition. I will keep praying. I hope we get an update soon.
Have a lovely day everyone.
Thanks Anne about the fire. Fortunately, it is located on the coast way north of here and mostly under control now with air power dropping water during the night. The news looked like they were using the helicopters to suck up ocean water and then flying inland to make their drops. It is lovely forest land that is burning and the wind direction has been directly towards us and the whole SF bay area. So the smoke is being shared by many. I believe that by tomorrow the wind is to shift so it should be much better air quality wise.
I love the name Anne, rather than Phyllis. Good choice! 🙂
Phyllis is kind of a different name. I only know Phyllis Diller 🥰 and long ago, we had a neighbor living across the street from us named Phyllis Cook. She was kind of pretty in a plain sort of way, She told me she was a model for JC Penney catalog! She had really nice teeth, and shared with me that they were custom made veneer covers, very expensive! 😂 just a funny memory. She was really nice. I liked Phyllis.
I like your name Anne better.
When I was in Jr, High, the boys called me Razzleberry. haha
Believe it or not, when I ‘discovered’ my brother in US I found out I also had a cousin called Phyllis! I think I am older than der though.
