A question about dolls…

Hi everyone,
I wasn’t able to put a post together for today, so I’ll ask a question… since this is “supposed” to be a blog about dolls and sewing for them, let’s find out something…

Who is the doll you would most like to have added to your collection if you could get her?

Now that should start a little discussion.

I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Hm, good question, Jeanne. I think the doll I’d most like to have added to my collection was the ballerina doll my cousin Carol had when we were kids. I absolutely loved that doll, and of course it was way beyond what we could have afforded. I remember she had “real Capezio shoes” (it said on the box, and the shoes did have the Capezio brand embossed on the soles) which fit on her en pointe feet, and a lovely pink (I think) ballet costume. She was fully jointed and posable, too. OH, how I wanted a doll like that!! When Carol was done playing with it (and in those days she really didn’t play with dolls nearly as much as I did; now she does collect dolls, but primarily Madame Alexanders), her mother gave it to our younger cousin….who also didn’t play with dolls much!! And she didn’t remember what might have happened to it after that (I asked once, long ago)!

I would also love to find the small baby doll I loved so much as a child, but she was rubber, and I’m sure would be in pretty poor shape by now. Her fingers had already started wearing off by the time I gave her to a neighbor girl when I was 14 and we were about to move out here. Mom said I couldn’t keep All my dolls, so I gave away the smallest one. But she had a portable bathinette which really held water, as well as a set of nursing bottles, rack, and sterilizer, some plastic pants and her drink/wet bottle, and a few clothes that mom had made. I had so much fun playing with her!

Well, Carol and I were both born in 1946, so I imagine about 1954 or 55. I know I supposedly had my “last” doll (HA!!!) in 1956, when I was 10. The doll in the picture in the link you shared looks fairly similar to what I remember, but I think more than one company had dolls with Capezio shoes. Thanks for finding that picture!

We have to leave in a few minutes. Peyton has some pretty hard dentist work this am and I have to go in case he needs me to drive him home. I will catch Y’all up when we get back.

Well, Jeanne, I am not sjre of you mean a new doll to add or something we missed out on previously. I will say there is. O doll that I want to add to my collection at the present time. Nothing I am pining for, since I have enough already, at least for me. I don’t cold t dolls to put on a shelf to admire, because each doll I have has her own life and lots of things to do and wear!

Now if it is something from the past, there is one doll that I wanted in particular, that I never got. She was downtown at Famous-Barr, a department store in St. Louis, and it was the month before Christmas. My mother took me downtown to see what kind of doll I wanted Santa to bring me. There she was up high on a shelf, behind glass doors, looking so cute with her braids and pleated wool skirt, standing in front of a doll wardrobe full of clothes for her! I kept pointing to her, but my mother must have told the sales woman not to show her to me, and so she showed me every other kind of doll, but no, I wanted THAT one! After I had grown up, my mother told me that doll cost $75.00, so it was out of reach! I guess that was a really expensive doll, back in 1948! I did get a very pretty Nancy Ann bride doll, which I loved, but never forgot that cute doll with braids. No wonder I picked Molly out as my first American Girl doll!

Linda, your chicken recipe was wonderful! I used chicken thighs, the Swiss cheese, mushroom soup with dry sherry (I didn’t want to open a big bottle of wine since we don’t drink it), sprinkled stuffing mix and butter. It came out beautifully and Peyton LOVED it, so did I. Thank you.

Oh my gosh, why all those mistakes? Seems like the comments with mistakes go through even though I correct them!
      It is NO doll!
Sure always comes out sjre for some reason or other,
      Cold is collect!

  4. Dearie Jeanne, I hope this week-end was a smooth and comfortable week-end for both of you. You and George were on my mind every moment!

I would love to have a 13″ Dianna Effner doll like the ones you have. She would sit with me while I sew stuff, and she would have cute girly outfits

I would also love to have all of my real live grand dolls that live only 30 minutes away. I just want to hug them.

I hope all of you sweet sisters had a happy week-end. Hubbs watched a lot of racing – F1 and also Mustang Dark Horse. Of course the F1 race in Monaco was the best… for me, only because of the scenery. I love “live drone cameras”
Wow. All of those ppl standing on their very own porches with views of thousands of fancy yachts and the Riviera. Crazy life.

I moved my Featherweight down stairs to the dining room table.
I spent some time with Tiny Princess kitty on our screened in porch, after I vacuumed it. She loved it.

We are going to the old house after lunch to meet with a nice real estate lady.
Of course I feel rather “loser-ish” for waiting over a year to put the house on the market.
Daddy’s Virginia Income tax bill: resolved. We will probably receive the refund daddy was supposed to receive. He did not pay his 2022 Va taxes because I guess he was going to mail it in… late?
He was 99 and went to Heaven 6 weeks later. I miss my dad and mom.

I wish all of you a productive easy going day.
I found an old flickr photo album of mine. Not many photos….. I could add more photos. https://www.flickr.com/photos/195523105@N06/
Jeanne and George, prayers continue, for comfort and recovery.

Wow, Rosemary! Tell us more about those photos, please!! So many lovely quilts, did you make them all?? Tell us more!

  5. I would love to have Siblies doll! Just can’t justify purchasing one. Maybe someday! And a Diane Effner doll. That one I know will never happen. Hope things get better for you and your husband.

Last fall, Nikki Britt had a pre-order for a doll named Arisu. I was totally in love with this doll, but because of other dolls I had already ordered, I just couldn’t afford another one. I don’t own any of Nikki’s dolls (yet), like Meadowdolls, they are quite expensive, and rightly so, she is a well-known doll artist and they are very high quality! Maybe some day I will find one at a price I can afford… Never say never, right? 🙂

    1. Theresa in Indiana

Well, I know I did not make those typos! I always check and double-check before posting! I noticed my reply to Sissy was also messed up. Weird. Guess it doesn’t really matter. 🙂

      1. Theresa in Indiana

Okay, people I’m really not crazy. When I read my first post a few minutes ago, there were some very strange typos. Then, after I made the post about not making those typos, my posts were back to normal! And I don’t drink (hardly ever) and now I’m going to bed.

I know what doll I would want for sure. Lana Dobbs has created the prettiest dolls in three sizes I have ever seen. One is Little Darling size and other size is 10 inch. I would love the small one, but would take both sizes if I had the money. Their faces are just gorgeous.
Jeanne, Prayers for you and George are continued, don’t worry about us.

I am much better from my terrible sickness and am just working on getting back to my self. We will go to the Y tomorrow and I will start back to my exercise. We got to go to church Sunday and it was my day to read the messages. I managed but still felt wobolly. Today’s dentist didn’t happen, his back went out on him and we will go back next week. I hope to get going upstairs today and get something done.

    1. Theresa in Indiana

Oh, yes, Sissy! I had forgotten about Lana’s new dolls! They are so pretty, I would love to have one of them, too! I need to win the lottery.

I hope that George, is feeling a little better everyday and that Jeanne, can let her energizer bunny mode run down soon and take a break so she can get back to sewing.
As to what doll I’d like to add to the collection, all that I can think of at the moment, are those of the Ruby Reds. There are two from Russia that I have always admired but wasn’t able to purchase. Marina and Polly. Now, as to older dolls, years ago, they came out with a fun doll. Poor, Pitiful, Pearl. I’m sure that some of you remember her. She looked kind of scruffy, but she could be changed to a beautiful outfit that made her look lovely. I didn’t play with dolls anymore then, but always thought of her. She’s still around and can be found on the bay. Anyway, it’s fun to see the dolls that everyone still wants. 🙂
The weekend kind of flew by. I’m still pulling out mint.
Today, we’re heading to the other house to meet a tree guy. Getting estimates for removing a silver maple. Can’t imagine what it might cost. It’s huge, and now hangs over the house so high that we can’t reach the branches any more to cut them back. This company was recommended by a friend who had two huge trees removed, so well see how it goes.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Oh Joy, my youngest sister got a Poor Pitiful Pearl, and hated her! She cannot figure out why my mother decided that was the doll she would get that Christmas! So funny to see her expression when she opened her up!
Does anyone remember those Sparkle Plenty dolls? My sister and I each got one, but she left her doll outside in the sun, and she turned black! Another funny thing!

      1. Debbie in North Carolina

Your poor sister, the wrong doll and a ruined doll. Sunlight is the worst thing for vinyl. I bet she is not a doll collector today after those experiences.

        1. Linda in St. Louis

Debbie, my sister was more of a tom-boy, and dolls did not really interest her like they did me. But you know what? She does have some really fancy pancy dolls in her house, just to sit around. She is no longer a tom boy, that’s for sure!
Those Sparkle Plenty dolls had a special skin, called magic skin or something like that, a very soft rubbery skin. I see some on EBay that are totally black, and some people even buy them! They couod pass as a black doll, but they have bright yellow yarn hair!🤣

          1. Debbie in North Carolina

That is something – that people buy those dolls. “There is no accounting for taste”.
Glad to hear she wasn’t completely turned off to dolls.

      2. Joy in northern CA

I can see why a young girl wouldn’t want PPPearl. She wasn’t so pretty as other dolls. But, I’ve always liked her look. Funny eh?

      3. That is a funny memory, Linda i do not remember this doll but she certainly is kind of “homely”
Dolls being left out in the sun? My sister got a “generic” Barbie doll one year as a gift from ?? can’t remember much about that but she had nice golden red hair and a fancy face. She left that doll out in the sun and her plastic skin turned green. We had her a long time, really, she always joined in with the Barbies. We changed her name to “Grenell” hahahaha I bet Joyce remembers that. Gosh, I wish we had a zillion photos of those days.

  9. Debbie in North Carolina

Jeanne you and George are top of mind and prayer list. May recovery continue and be long lasting.

We were on a short trip last week so I did miss a couple of posts. Last night we stayed up too late watching the Tony awards. While we never watch award shows last night was an exception. A woman from our hometown and friend of my daughter won best revival of a musical for Ragtime and she is only 46 years old. We were over the moon!

I did have to think a while on today’s topic as I have a carefully curated collection. Thirty years ago I thought I would never own a Kathe Kruse but their value has decreased recently and I was able to afford a few examples from the best years-two new in the box from the 80’s and 90’s. Sissy reminded me of my modern doll desire-the new Lana Dobbs dolls in 10 and 13 inch size. Besides the price, buying on FB leaves me out. I know if I joined because of a doll auction I would likely make a purchase I would regret, not because of the doll but because of the price.

Beautiful quilts Rosemary! Truly works of art. Wonderful hobby, where do you store all of them!

  10. Actually I have two on my wishlist, but I have to see what I can first sell from my collection and elsewhere before I can consider them. One is AG Ruthie and the other is another Marie-Grace to customize. Ruthie will be unaltered, but be two different characters, while Marie-Grace will need an eyeswap and wear her own as well as another wig to again play two different roles.

  11. Love the topic because I am waiting right now for an American girl doll to arrive! it is Ivy Ling. I had a Truly Me Asian doll a couple of years ago and I regret selling her, so for a couple of years I’ve been looking for the right Ivy Ling and I found one!
I don’t know that she’s as old as when she first came out, but she’s in her original box and she has her original outfit, her earrings, her coin and her red dress.
It’s a gift from my boys and husband.
I was thinking of keeping her with the 50 girls, but I might put her in the modern group that I have.
The only other doll I ever wished I had was the Shirley Temple doll that might’ve been about 4 feet tall? Not sure of her height, but I only saw one in my life at a doll show and I did not get her and I wish I had.

It was interesting hearing about the dolls. Everyone has talked about.

And Jeannie and George I’m thinking of you And hope all is well.

  12. I forgot – I wanted a doll like the Asian doll of Jeanne’s – I think it’s a Diane Effner doll.

  13. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

I would love a Dianne Effner Little Darling but they are way too expensive. Living at the bottom of the world makes the postage more expensive than the doll itself. Growing up there weren’t many dolls available in UK just after the war, most of my dolls cost about 5 shillings from Woolworths, which my Mum knitted outfits for. It wasn’t really until the mid fifties that rationing ended and more ‘luxury’ items were coming into the country, however, I don’t think the AG’s were ever available in UK, If they were I never saw one. By the time the more upmarket dolls were available I was almost too old for dolls, but my parents wouldn’t have been able to afford them anyway. My only daughter was a tomboy and not really into dolls. As an adult I discovered the antique dolls and would have loved to own one but with a growing family they were financially out of reach as well.
Rosemary, I loved seeing your album. You have made some lovely quilts. I don’t always remember to photograph mine and since I nearly always give them away I only have my memories of some of them. Funnily enough, I always photographed my decorated cakes!
Jeanne, I hope that your life (and George’s) will get back to normal soon,
My son and grandson left for US yesterday for the Football World Cup. Apparently 20,000 Kiwis are travelling. NZ All Whites play Iran in their first game, I think it is on Tuesday in LA then they move on to see the other two games that are in Canada. I don’t think the Kiwis will progress to the next round but Darren and Jack won’t be there if they do. I think they are away for about three weeks.
    Have a lovely day everyone

J’ai souvent espéré trouver une Little Darling De Diane Effner, le modèle Annie .
Cela restera un « rêve «  et c’est bien aussi.

  15. The doll that I would love to have is a SmartDoll Plus Girl by Danny Choo. She is 1/2 scale so close to four feet tall 120cm twice the height of the normal SmartDolls.
