A Civil War Bonnet was just what this outfit needed…

HI everyone,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the pictures from the hayride. It was a lot of fun and always great to see new faces…old ones too!

I was given a tin pan of some homemade cornbread after the hayride, so I cooked some great northern beans and ham to go with it. (nothing like planning your dinner around a pan of cornbread!) I loved it and so did my hubby. We have enough for another meal or two.

I was working this morning on some fingerless gloves for someone who emailed me. She had bought about 8 or 10 pair from me but they had a fire and she lost everything. She asked if I could replace some of them… how could I say no?

I don’t know if it’s just my phone or not, but the pictures showing the color of the dress on my phone is a much darker amber color than what it actually is. On my computer the pictures are pretty true to being the right color.

This afternoon I turned my attention to Rebecca, who was still laying on her back in the same position as she was on Friday! I had a piece of solid colored linen in the amber color and was debating about making a bonnet from it, but decided to use my dress fabric. I think it ties the whole outfit together better.

Oh, and for those of you who didn’t care too much for the “brooch” because it looked pink… (it’s sort of a mauve or rose,) and if you could see it in person, you would like it, so I’m keeping it as it is. It really does go and looks very nice with the amber. Maybe one of my pictures tonight will make you like it.

It’s late, so here is a slideshow of the bonnet and the bow on the back of the bodice. I hope you like it.

Thanks everyone,
Blessings, Jeanne

That bonnet added just the right touch to the outfit, Jeanne. I’m glad you went with the dress fabric. The roses on it are a perfect match, too.

It’s funny, in the close-up picture of the brooch, it looks quite lavender, but not so much in the more distant shots. Odd, how our cameras and even monitors can affect how some colors look.

Oh, dear, it seems that Charlotte Noelle is up to her old tricks again, Dorothy!! I suppose that means “time out” in the corner now and then!! 😂 I love reading about her antics. I don’t think I would ever have done that stuff when I was a kid. My dad and I were talking one time, in relation to some of the things my son had done as a teen, and my dad said, “I guess mom and I didn’t realize it at the time, but you and Paul were good kids. You were Really good kids!” That was nice to hear.

(Of course I was “gooder” than my brother!! 😂🤣😂)

Rosemary, it’s actually not a “boot” that I have, but a surgical shoe, which looks almost like a black sandal with straps that are too wide!! I tried on the boot at the time, and I would have been flat on my face after 3 or 4 steps with that thing–the bottom was not flat, it was curved! This one isn’t Truly flat, either, but better than that boot I tried. Even so, I have trouble with it, and tonight ended up on one knee because it slipped just a little bit underneath me. I will be glad when I can wear a real shoe on that foot again! I feel so off-balance in that “shoe”.

    1. Oh I understand about that boot. We had one in the basement of the old house and I gave it to the local orthopedist office as it was rarely used by my daughter. They are miserable things.
Well, as a survivor of a few toe injuries, I can attest to the absolute misery you are going through. I hope your toe heals up nicely, and part of that, means staying off of it… but try not to turn into a couch marshmallow. Stay strong dear friend.
Nurses are maybe the worst patients and I complain bitterly when I have an injury, but I know you are finding that the broken toe is better than a broken arm…. so there is that 😢
I am absolutely not surprised that you were a really good child.

Dear Charlotte, yes, your namesake did have a time out in the corner.

I am not sure why I created that personality for Charlotte Noelle. I wanted her to be mischievous and yet smart enough to try to get herself out of trouble. And when Selah came later, she was the perfect nemesis.

As I am typing this, I think that maybe Charlotte Noelle is the anti-Pollyanna. She always has something to say and it’s usually wrong (laugh). I don’t know if I ever sent Jeanne a photo of these two girls. I will have to check.

By the way, all of my other doll children are sweet.

      1. Hi Dorothy,
I loved it when you called Charlotte Noelle the anti-Pollyanna!
I think I did show Charlotte Noelle and Selah, but we’d be glad to see them again… any time! :o)
        Blessings, Jeanne

    3. HI Charlotte,
Thanks for liking Rebecca’s dress set. You know… that brooch just might be lavender! I don’t know exactly why, but it goes wonderfully with the colors in the dress. It must be a complimentary color to the amber… I should look on a color wheel.
I hope the foot is coming along okay… with your “boot!” I have one of those upstairs in the attic. Probably everyone has one! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

Oh Jeanne, that is a darling bonnet for this dress! I love the black lace, and the perfectly matching roses that adorn it! That is a bonnet that will be easy to wear no matter how the doll has her hair, even with a bun updo!

I also love that bow you added in the back of the dress! coming and going, this dress is a knockout!

Now the brooch, well, now that Charlotte mentions it, the flower does look lavender! I’m not sure what you are going for, but you do have a good sense of color, and you do know what you are doing, so if you say it “goes”, it must really go! You haven’t had a misstep yet! Seeing things in person really does make a difference!

Charlotte, I have had two foot surgeries, and know the problems with those flat footed boot things! If I were you, I would find more to do sitting down than walking around, of that is possible! Heaven forbid if you have to go up and down steps!

  3. Karen from Kentucky

Rebecca looks spectacular! I love her dress, her hat and her brooch! Great job!
Also, I wanted to mention that my sister got a brace to help her with her plantar fasciitis. Not sure if it is helping yet, but I thought I’d mention it. Hope you feel better soon!

    1. Barbara in SE Texas

I had a brace I slept in when I had my plantar fasciitis a few years ago. Never want that again but the brace helped a lot. When my daughter said she was having a problem with plantar fasciitis, I suggested she get one. She did and it worked wonders for her. I didn’t mention it because Jeanne said she had tried everything, so I assumed she had tried that too.

    2. Hi Karen,
A friend loaned me her boot and her New Balance Tennis shoes… they didn’t help… so I’m just biding my time while it takes it good ole’ sweet time to heal.
      Thanks for your suggestion,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Corn bread! Nice. I should make some. With just hubbs and me, I tend to bake things and freeze portions otherwise we eat too much and have visions of doctors shaking fingers at us. I do love corn bread.
Jeanne, this dress is stunning. The bonnet is beautiful, the brooch is beautiful. This ensemble is so lovely.
I hope everyone has been productive and or enjoying your days. I have a long list of duties and things to address, but I did some sewing yesterday, and then moved my two potted rose bushes to the back screened porch.
I also need to take a picture of my progress on the sew along and add it to the chat on substack. I should do that today.
I wish every one pep inducing sunshine. 🌞

  5. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Hey, Y’all, I read you yesterday but we left home early and got home too late to write. I did get to the jewelry store early enough to be the first in line. By the time it opened there was a long line and more came. I did make some money with some silver that neither of my sons wanted and some of my moms gold earrings and pins. The seller man that took my things was very nice. At least they sell the jewelry and don’t melt them down like the silver. I don’t know what will happen to my silver flatware but I am saving it, hoping for granddaughters to take.it. We have spent so much on the house this year I need to find things to sell.
After that we had to go to the car place for our car’s 6 month service and sat there a LONG time waiting. by the time we got home and cooked dinner, we collapsed.

The place we were yesterday is the larger town in the next county, it is Brunswick. It is an hour drive for us and we have to go back today for a funeral for one of our dear class mates. Then, tomorrow, we go back again for two things, 1. Back to the car place for 2 things they had to order, and 2. YAY, some fun! I will tell you what number 2 is tomorrow.

Charlotte, I hope your toe allows you to get back to your shoe. I know how hard it is to walk in the one you described, I have been there. Take care, maybe use a cane?

Jeanne, I have had plantar fasciitis years ago and once more 2 years ago. Once it has been cured I have been wearing Easy Spirit Travel Blogs and I have had no more trouble. I put Dr. Scholls insoles in them but first cover the soles with those little footies if you are not wearing socks.. You can put them on the soles instead of on your feet. I have quite a lot of these shoes over the years and love them. Also, of course, I love the bonnet and the bow in the back. Just lovely! I am sure the brooch is perfect because you know what you are doing! No worries.

  6. Joy in northern CA

What a delightful photo of the new bonnet. It is absolutely perfect with the dress which is also perfect. I do like the added punch of the bow in the back. Gives it a little bit of interest back there. And, I’ve always liked the brooch with the dress fabric and with the added lovely flowers on the hat, looks lovely. In my opinion, this is a real winner and will have to go in the Jeanne Marie Hall of Fame. Well, the photos anyway. 🙂
We raked leaves from the roof and all around the other house yesterday. Then, headed home where I sanded and painted my deck Bondo patches. Other person did some railing paint touch up and blew the leaves off he roof here. I did the raking clean up and blew the leaves that were filling the driveway off into the street and raked them into piles. Managed to stuff the big can here for today’s pick up. All in preparation for the huge rain we had last night. Didn’t want leaves clogging up anything. I think that we’ve already had an inch of rain, but it has calmed down now. Of course, now we have lots more leaves to rake. Crazy fall. We’ll take a break today though because I’m pretty sick of leaves.
I think we should make a list of shoe brands that work for everyone. It is getting harder and harder to find shoes because most stores don’t carry many choices anymore. That is if the store hasn’t closed. Where does everyone buy shoes?

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Joy, I agree; a list would be helpful.

I hate shoe shopping. Nothing fits. I just wear my Reeboks everywhere.

    2. Barbara in SE Texas

I buy my Easy-Spirit Romy shoes online at the Easy-Spirit website. They are probably the only place I can buy walking shoes that don’t squeeze my toes. Most places don’t mention the toe box. Easy-Spirit Romy shoes have a wide toe box but the shoes I buy are not wide width. Some places I would have to get the wider width to get the wider toe box.

        1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Joy, I find that many of the walking shoes today are “rockers.” The are not flat from heel to toe. I don’t like the idea of rocking shoes. They throw me off.

          1. Joy in northern CA

Yes, my cousin had a pair of rockers and has difficulty enough walking without that problem. I can’t wear anything like that either. 🙂

  7. I really like the lovely bonnet, Jeanne. Very sweet. I like how just about any hairstyle can work with it. I think the black bow is perfect in the back too. This is such a beautiful outfit in every way, very dressy and elegant.

On the subject of shoes, and to answer Joy’s question about where do we buy shoes. I haven’t been in a shoe store for years. I buy online – Sketchers, Amazon, and one or two from QVC. I’ve never had a problem with any of those shoes. If someone has foot problems, then I’m sure a that doesn’t always work.

    1. Joy in northern CA

I do buy online, but only when I have a place where I can return them for free. Many now charge for returns. Yikes. Don’t need that. I miss being able to go into a store and try on shoes on both feet. Stand up and walk around. I guess I’m really old school.

  8. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, I am loving this outfit. I love the bow on the back. That is so cute. I also love the trim on the bonnet. The outfit makes me think, “sassy Thanksgiving.”

    1. Hmmm… “Sassy Thanksgiving” I’ll have to see if there is enough space in the title for the rest… “American, Girl, Doll, Civil, War, Addy, etc…
      we’ll see… but I like that!

  9. This dress and bonnet are stunning. I already loved the brooch choice and the bonnet is now perfect with the roses to match. The bow in the back is lovely. Rebecca is a lovely Autumn Rose.

As to where to buy shoes. I buy New Balance from L L Bean because my Master Card from them gives me Bean Bucks for free clothing/shoes. Dress shoes for church I also buy online as I’ve found a few places/ brands that work. I have Narrow (AA) feet so that width is sometimes hard to find.

    1. Joy in northern CA

Tks Laura. I haven’t checked out LLBean in a long time. I used to have narrow AA feet too. Not anymore though. 🙂

  10. Barbara in SE Texas

Yes, I think the hat made from the dress fabric is good. This is such a beautiful outfit. I love the bow on the back and the lace on the bonnet. And the flowers go perfectly. I like the brooch too.

While we’re speaking of shoes I want to mention some wonderful compression hose I’ve found. I don’t have swelling in my legs but they get tired and at this time of year I need them to stay warm so they don’t ache. Usually the compression hose I find I can’t get on at all. These hose are from a place called Everstride. They have tons of colors and some really cute striped ones. They actually look like knee socks.

I was sure glad I had these on last evening when we went to vote. We usually do early voting but David was gone during the day last week on a job so we had to wait till election day. I wanted to wait and go with him. I wanted to go earlier in the day but he couldn’t get away. Well, because it wasn’t a presidential election or anything like that, we were just voting on constitutional amendment propositions, we only had one place in the city to vote. The turnout must have been tremendous because when we got there the line was long. It was a beautiful evening so waiting was no problem except that I worried I wouldn’t hold up. Thankfully I did and my socks definitely helped with that. I think we stood in line at least 45 minutes. When we finished voting and went back outside the line was even longer than when we got there. Usually it’s in and out for us even on election day but not this time.

  11. It has been awhile but I do still read everyday. The dress is a winner in my opinion. Lovely autumn colors. The same fabric bonnet with the black lace application really does tie everything together. Jan and I have been talking quite a bit about the colors of the dolls and outfits on the phone cameras. Light colors look darker and dark tones look lighter. Especially vexing when buying on the secondary market.

My primary reason for weighing in today is plantar fasciitis. I have suffered in different measure since we moved to North Carolina 4 years ago. I blame the hard floors throughout the house. This is the first house I have lived in with NO carpet. And we are on a concrete slab, very hard with just a thin sheet of vinyl on top.

Like you Jeanne, I tried every thing. Frozen bottles, physical therapy, one shot (which made it worse!). I have been to 2 orthopedics and 1 podiatrist. Shoes are the cause and for me the solution. The podiatrist said my shoes were too stiff – Dansko clogs- he said the sole should be flexible. Too much of my doll budget is being spent on the shoes and much of it is trial and error. The brands recommended by the orthopedic are very expensive and not always comfortable. Here are some brands and styles that have helped:
-Slippers with arch support. Very hard to find and pricey. Haflinger is my go to. I scour the internet to find them on sale. Lots of slippers mimic these but they don’t have the arch support.
-New Balance sneakers because of the arch support and wide toe box.
-Ryka – these are mesh Mary Janes and I wear them to run errands and to Tai Chi which I started because it was the only exercise I could stand.

There are NO shoe stores anymore. We lived near a Dillard’s in Tennessee that had an amazing shoe department with incredible sales. That is in the rear view mirror. Zappos but too many choices, no good sales. For trusted service Dodd’s Shoe Company online. They are in Connecticut

    Buying dolls is more fun!

    1. Joy in northern CA

Okay, thanks so much for the shoe information and the New Balance vote. I’ll check out Dodd’s. 🙂

    2. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Debbie, I agree. There aren’t even shoe departments in stores where I am. There are just boxes on boxes with chairs and folks look for their own shoes. I want the old days back.

      1. Debbie in North Carolina

I long for them too Dorothy. We drove an hour and a half to Greensboro for shoe shopping. Two shopping centers for one pair of shoes. 🤦‍♀️

        1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Debbie, it is awful that you had to trek through two malls just to find shoes.

      2. Barbara in SE Texas

I totally agree, Dorothy. I loved the days of browsing a shoe store and then having someone ask to help. You showed them what you wanted and what size and they disappeared into the back of the store, often coming out with what you asked for and a few others they thought you might like. Shoe shopping was fun. But then I didn’t have foot issues either. I had bunions removed from both sides of both feet back in 1980. My right foot will be comfortable in any shoe you put on it. Not so much the left one. It has issues with all shoes so I have to do whatever I can (bunion pads, etc.) to make the shoe feel tolerably comfortable. I don’t have the money for custom made shoes.

    3. Thanks for all the information, Debbie,
I could do a blog post on all the shoes I’ve bought and the socks with arch supports, the sandals that are cushy, the ice foot baths, the stretching, the pulling, the clogs, the OOFOS, the boot, etc…
I don’t remember ever being so frustrated over something. I can go maybe 2 days and it seems like it getting better, then I’ll be laying in bed and it feels like someone is holding a blow torch to my heel.
Patience… I think that is the key.
Thanks for all the info… I will read it again…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. Anne Coldron in Christchurch NZ

Jeanne Rebecca’s outfit is lovely, I love the bonnet. I have no idea what a plantar fasciitis is only ever heard of a plantar wart which used to be called a verruca. I had one of those and it was soooo painful. I looked it up in Google and it sounds very similar. You have my sympathy.
