The making of a Regency Spencer jacket…

I thought I’d share some details of the Spencer jacket I’m making to go over Elizabeth’s Regency gown. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do. I still have a bit more to finish before the big reveal, but I’ll show you what it looks like so far.

The pattern I used for the bones of this jacket is from Keepers Dolly Duds. I did a few modifications…

I made the pointed collar a little smaller than the pattern and I left off the longer skirt of the jacket and made it stop at the waist. When I get the back finished, I’ll show you something else I changed…

I used a thin red satin fabric for the lining. At first I was going to leave it unlined but there were too many seams and it didn’t look as nice as I wanted.

I hope you can tell what I was doing with the lining around the armholes… the sleeves aren’t lined…the lining is turned under and whip stitched to the armhole area.

Here is Elizabeth modeling it…she likes it!!

A little more and I’ll be done!!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Very pretty, Jeanne! Now I see how that Spencer will fit over the puffed sleeves! ;The Spencer also has puffed sleeves at the top! I love the light, airy look of the dress fabric, so nice for this time of the year! It will be very versatile for when it cools off, and she will be needing the jacket. I can’t wit to see what else you have up your sleeve with this outfit!
I was thinking a pretty choker with a dangle would look nice with the dress. Something Rebecca could figure out!
I am so glad to see you sewing again, in spite of things with the virus, it seems like good times are here again! Jeanne Marie is back in her sewing room!!

    1. Hi Linda,
I just finished the jacket…well, a few more snaps to sew on.. Elizabeth likes it…
      I’ve already talked to Rebecca about a necklace…. :o)

I’m trying to MY part in keeping everyone’s mind off the virus and other things! Sewing works for me…I hope “looking at my sewing” works for everyone else.
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Love that pattern. In fact, I too have it although I’ve never made it. The jacket is quite an accomplishment. Love all of the seams and how the sleeves are attached. Such a striking jacket. And, the lovely finishing on the inside makes a perfect presentation. I like the smaller collar. Such vision you possess. Can’t wait to see what you did on the back.
Hope you have some sewing time today. 🙂

    1. Hi Joy,
This pattern is fairly easy to do, but it has taken more time than I thought it would…too much hand sewing…but that might be my fault for changing the pattern…

I am almost finished with the jacket and Elizabeth can’t wait to try it on for the final time.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I love the Spencer jacket, especially how you altered it. It looks lovely with the dress and will be perfect for all seasons. I too think a Rebecca original necklace would be lovely with the dress.

You mentioned in a reply yesterday that you love shoes. I do believe they are my and my dolly daughters’ downfall. Five outfits, thirty pairs of shoes. If the shoe fits, buy it in every color. I do that for myself because so few styles fit me these days, my dolly daughters do it because they have to have a pair of shoes for every color in an outfit and often there aren’t many styles to choose from.

About shoes for the FF, I noticed that when I took off the tights, the 58 mm shoes are actually a bit wide. There are 58 mm slim shoes that fit the Kish 14″ dolls and these might work better. The foot measurements seem to be the same, but the FF have narrow heels and maybe the 58 mm slim might work better. Has anyone tried this? If not, I’ll be the Guinea Pig and buy a pair to try them out. I actually bought a size bigger than the 58 mm to get some sandals but I noticed the 58mm slim has the same sandals so maybe I’ll try two pairs, Mary Janes and sandals. The price for doing this is not too bad at Juju’s. Debs has more choices in shoes but they are twice the cost. I’ll give it a whirl and hope they fit better than the regular 58 mm.

I can only imagine the fun you are having in your wonderful renovated sewing room. Looking forward to more creations coming this way.

    1. Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your kind compliments and I do think a necklace is in order…
When I mentioned shoes, I wss talking about ME… I’m the one around here who loves shoes. Although I do have quite a collection for my dolls.
If you order the shoes, let us all know how they fit.
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. that is a nice, versatile pattern with lots of choices including bonnets. I may have to find that one. With all of Dorothy’s talk about Jane Austin and now a Regency dress for Elizabeth < I may have to consider adding Regency to my doll's time periods. Caroline may actually step back into her own era in the future. I'll have to see. Fortunately, there's nothing in her collection I regret not getting. I got her travel basket (umm make that two) because it was so versatile.
Elizabeth's gown and spencer are just lovely with the puffed sleeves. With the exception of the 1930's, all my doll eras are the ones with fancy, elegant clothing. Now all she needs is a bonnet or something decorative for her head and a reticule.

    1. Hi Laura,
I might have to try this on Caroline, just because she’s an actual Regency doll…
Thank you for your sweet comments about this set…I’ve got to see if I have enough scraps to make a bonnet…if not, plan B…
      Thank you Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Love the addition of a jacket to that dress. It’s going to be so sweet.l
Love, love the bonnet…something about it being kind of on a smaller scale looks good with the short jacket hope you have enough to do it😉

    1. Hi Kathie,
My hubby seems to really like this dress set…
One of my favorite colors is red, so I really like it too!!
I dont have enough scraps for a bonnet but you’ll see what I’m doing tomorrow…

      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings ,Jeanne

  6. All I can say Jeanne is, it’s all gorgeous! The process is so important, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing it all with us.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
I’m glad you enjoy it when I show how I put something together!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Jeanne, I absolutely love those fabrics together! And your lining and finishing are so nice and neat! I would have found it terribly difficult to not buy that McKenna–so many dolls come here to live one way or another!

    1. Thank you Beth,
I’m ready to make a second jacket…I’m sure it would go faster than the first.
McKenna really was pretty…it definitely was hard to pass on her…
      Thanks so much
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Absolutely beautiful Jennie. I had a my generation doll for my 66 th birthday the other week. My first doll in my life and you inspired me to start a wardrobe of clothes for her to pass down the generations . Thank you so much. X

    1. Congratulations on your new doll, Iris! It’s NEVER too late to start loving on dolls! I hope you are having fun…share some of your creations with us one of these days!
