A Felt DOLLY, a Kewpie DOLLY and a Furniture DOLLY…

We have three different dolly’s to talk about today…

The first one is a FELT DOLLY that Joy made for her Meadow girls… She is adorable and I have to give Joy a big pat on the back for making her so adorable…and so small. I’m guessing she’s about 3″ long?

The next doll we are going to talk about is the Kewpie dolly… I’m sure everyone will recognize this unique face and body…

Susette shared a few links in an email to me to learn more about the dolls… Actually this whole article below tells you just about everything about the artist of the dolls and their history… The pictures are great… Thank you Susette… I’ve never known anything about them. Let’s see who has any on here…

The Mother of the Kewpies

…and the last Dolly is a Furniture Dolly… you know, this kind…I may or may not need one, but it fit with my title, so I’m going with it. I have a project I’m working on and hope to have it finished by Monday.

Here’s a terrible looking little hint… I couldn’t resist! :o)

Well, whatever you do on this fine Saturday, I hope it involves a DOLLY!! :o)

See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

I love Joy’s little felt dolly! It’s so much fun to have properly-sized accessories for our dollies!! You know you have “doll fever” really bad when you look at something (like those tiny star-shaped pasta) and think, “that would be perfect to serve at the next dolly dinner! They’d look so cute on the tiny plates! I’m often spotting things that are made tiny for one reason or another having Nothing to do with dolls, and your first thought is, Perfect for my dolls!

Oh, Kewpies….I know a couple of gas who collect them. I have my late aunt’s Kewpie–he’s composition, and is badly crazed, I’m afraid, but he was Aunt Linnea’s, so he’s special!

Hm, you must be getting ready to move furniture again!! Is Rebecca completely back in her room again, or are you moving furniture elsewhere in your house? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I ran some errands today, and cut out a few more masks tonight. My son brought me some Seahawks fabric from a buddy, and they were wondering if I could make masks for them out of it. I don’t normally sew on football team fabric, but, since I didn’t have to pay for it….!! Haha! I’ll line it with other fabrics I have here, though, so they know which way to wear the masks!

    1. HI Everyone,
I didn’t have time to address everyone’s comments, but wanted to acknowledge those who took time to comment. I knew you’d love Joy’s little felt dolly. I used to do all kinds of felt projects and probably would LOVE to make one of these little dollies…for one of MY little dollies! :o)
I learned so much from that article Susette sent about the Kewpie dolls. I had no idea they came about like that. Good for Rose! Thanks Susette,
And I’m not giving away any hints about what I did today, but hopefully it will be finished tomorrow! I’m pretty thrilled!
      See you Monday,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Good morning, Jeanne! Oh, the things we do for our dolls! Joy’s little felt dolly is just perfect and just the thing to do on a rainy day like this! I too, see things that would work out so well for my dolls, even though my dolls are practically swimming in all the little things I have for them!

Whose Kewpie doll is that in the first picture? Is that Susette’s? I have two little Kewpie dolls, and have pictures. but have not come across them yet. That article had a lot of information that I did not know. Thanks Susette!

I had mentioned that when we went to Bonniebrook several years ago, that they had a tea room. I looked it up on the internet, and found that they no longer have one. Just the same, if you are ever close to Branson, to look it up and go there. Really a sweet little place!

Oh, I do remember that you said you bought a new piece of furniture, and are going to redo it. Something for your sewing room? Did you put the kitchen on the back burner again?🤫

  3. I LOVED the article on the Kewpies! I even had an old one, once. Unfortunately, my grandmother gave me all my mom’s dolls when I was much too young to care for them. One was a Kewpie, a larger one, and I have no idea what happened to it. Rose’s father was so supporting of her, wonderful story!

I love Joy’s doll, too. I have the pattern and was going to make one on my trip this month. The trip that got canceled. Hopefully, if we are able to make that trip at Thanksgiving, I will make one then.

  4. Good call on the felt dolly size. I just measured and yes, she is 3″. Anyone can make one, and I’m sure yours will come out much better. It is a free pattern from Pixie Faire. I reduced the original to 60% so tiny sewing is necessary. I had to use larger eyes than preferred as Joann’s here is order on line and pick up only. The dolly can be made with just a small portion of a felt square and some floss so the cash outlay is minimal. I also substituted floss for the hair rather than felt in the pattern. It was a learning experience. It is nice that the pattern for the dress and shoes are included in the freebie.
Now Charlotte is making Seahawks masks. So nice of her and fun for the wearers.
And Jeanne has found something else to do with her dolly. 🙂 Since the project is painted blue, and maybe even “Refuge” like Cindy’s wonderful cabinet redo, I’m not sure what’s going to happen. Will she strip it and start over? Repaint it? Is it a dresser? A buffet? The bottom of a desk? Where will it go? What color will it be? Guess we’ll have to wait until Monday to see the outcome.
Sister Cindy graciously gave me the paint manufacturer for that lovely paint color on her birthday cabinet paint job. I checked out the color and a few other Sherman Williams colors in the same group. I think Tranquil Aqua might work slightly better on the “other” toy chest I found in our family room. I’d forgotten about it and a paint job will get rid of the brown and tie it in with black/aqua couch. Definitely need to check out paint samples when things open up again.
    Have a great weekend.
I don’t think I ever had a Kewpie doll as a child, but I can’t wait to read the information from Susette this afternoon. Going to be another hot day like yesterday when it was 89.

  5. I love Joy’s little felt dolly. I’ve been a bit distracted lately and don’t think I commented on her wonderful recycling project. It was too cute. She comes up with such clever things for her dolls.

I haven’t done much creating at all lately but hope to get back to it soon. Right now I need to make some more masks. I don’t enjoy making them so they don’t fulfill me creatively. Aside from that I’m trying to do some housekeeping projects that have gone begging for too long. I sure wish they would open Goodwill soon. That would tidy up one room quite easily.

I loved the history of the Kewpies. Rose O’Neill was a truly talented and versatile woman. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like back then to have your abilities dismissed just because you were a woman. Almost as hard as realizing my grandmother was married with two children before women had the right to vote. I have nothing but respect for women who accomplished amazing things while having to navigate a social minefield. This was a wonderful story, but it was sad to see that her last years were difficult ones.

As for the furniture dolly, well without them my sewing room would be totally non-functional. I stack my fabric, pattern boxes, etc., on them and then I can move them easily when I want to get in the closet or reach the shelves behind. My sewing room is a decent size but it has a lot, lot, lot of stuff in there. Before the floor dollies it was difficult to move things out of the way. One day I was in Harbor Freight with my hubby and they had floor dollies on sale so I got the bright idea of stacking some boxes on them. I bought one to give it a try and was so impressed I bought three more. They have worked amazingly well and I don’t have to struggle with moving stacked boxes. Before I would have to unstack the boxes to get to things.

Can’t wait to see the end result of you latest project.

What a brilliant idea, Barbara, to use furniture dollies to stack your boxes of fabric on!! Now if I can just get my sewing room cleared enough so that I can get one of those dollies In there…..LOL

  6. Cindy’s cabinet looks great. I really like the the drawers and door in the center. Happy belated birthday, Cindy!
The article on Kewpies was fun to read. MY mom has a few frozen Charlottes, I need to have her check if one might be a Kewpie instead.
Joy’s little felt dolly is so cute. Every doll should have a doll of their own.
Looks like you’re doing another fun project, Jeanne, can wait to see.

  7. Kewpies have always been one of my favorite things. I have a couple old ones and several new reproductions made by Lee Feickert(aka Little Ones)…she does them start to finish..darling little things and my friends mom crocheted a dress for one of them.
All the books and illustrations Rose O’Neil did are so adorable she was so talented! She made them with little fairy personalities and looks…the little blue wings the have are such a cute addition. Guess photos to Jeanne are in order today.😍

  8. Joy, the little doll is adorable! You are very clever and I think the 👀 eyes are just the right size.

I bought a rather large Kewpie at flea market in Japan about 35 years ago, thinking it was a Japanese thing. I had no idea of the history nor that the lady was from Missouri! It was on a shelf in the closet for decades but now I can’t find it. I’ll keep looking. They used to be prizes when the fair came to town. Glad you enjoyed the article.
