The “fabric pieces” puzzle for Nyssa’s next dress…

My day was incredibly busy and hectic so I never made it into my sewing room until 9:00 Friday evening. Not good for me as I was planning on getting at least a little bit of sewing done on Nyssa’s dress. It just didn’t happen!

So I did the next best thing… I laid my pieces on top of Nyssa as she was laying down so they would stay in place. I already know you aren’t going to be able to understand this, but maybe you can sort of imagine it… if you squint your eyes as you look at my pictures! :o)

I would consider this fabric a strip and it needs to be treated as one.. SO I already see a few things that need to be changed. My sleeves need to match and they were cut on the bias so I need to make them exact replicas of each other… They certainly aren’t as you see them now!

I’m also thinking about putting the waistband with the strip going around Nyssa’s waist instead of going up and down… sometimes that’s an optical illusion that doesn’t work very well when you have stripes in your skirt…

I’m also thinking about the ruffles at the bottom… I think at least one needs to be in the lighter black print… just to tie it all together…

Well, that’s it… I’ve got to get to bed… Hopefully the next time you see Nyssa’s dress, it will have some shape to it!

Have a great weekend!
See you Monday morning!
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh I can’t wait to see this develop. Why not use some lace to break up the different layers as adding another print just may not work real well unless you use it in the top also JMO but may just be too busy

    1. HI Lynn,
I’ll have to see how things start looking when I start sewing this together.
I think it’s going to be very pretty.
      Thanks Lynn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I can definitely see this dress in my mind’s eye, and it’s going to be goreous!! Yes, I, too, would consider the darker fabric a stripe, and, as you said, the sleeves will need to be mirror images of each other, if that stripe is going to be on the bias.

I think I might do a bias ruffle or flounce at the bottom of the skirt, with a narrower ruffle or flounce just above it (sewn in the seam as one). T he narrower ruffle could be the contrast fabric, or it could be a lace, if that lace is the right width and bold enough to show up against the fabric. If lace, it could perhaps also be added to the sleeves.

Can’t wait to see what you do!!

    1. HI Charlotte,
I’m glad you can see how pretty this is going to be. ..I really think it will be!
When I get the bodice finished, I’ll decide on the skirt riffkes…it’s not just a double ruffle at the bottom…you’ll see… :o)
      Thanks Charlotte,

  3. Oh, this is going to be darling, Jeanne! I am so glad you picked this fabric, and I actually thought the bodice was a lace overlay, before remembering you had that piece shown the other day. Yes, a pretty flounce ruffle at the bottom of the skirt would be darling, but I don’t know how much fabric you have to work with, and yes, it is harder to do things you would like when you have a stripe and just so much material. You are the seamstress and can figure that out, if anyone can!
I’m so sorry I did not comment yesterday. We went to Kansas City to visit the AG store, and left around 5:30 or so, so I did not even bother to check the computer. It was a fun day though, and I did manage to get some cute things for my dolls. We saw so many Black-eyed Susans along the highway, which made it look so cheerful! It certainly is nothing like going south to Branson, since Hwy 70 goes through a lot of flat farmland. Saw a couple of corn mazes. Fall is on the way!

    1. Thanks Linda,
I have enough of this fabric to play around with it, so I can try something and if that doesn’t work, I can try something else.

Your trip to the AG store sounded wonderful.
I bet you had a wonderful time…just hope there was a Harbor Freight nearby for your hubby!!! :o)
I hope we see your new goodies one of these days.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. I like how you are using the different pieces of material together for Nyssa’s dress. See? That is your creative juices flowing! It’s amazing. I’m anxious to see how you pull it together at the end. I don’t have a Nyssa doll but I like your designs for her.

Linda, I enjoyed hearing about your trip to the AMG store. Your description of the drive is interesting too- about fall starting to show herself! I love the autumn scenery.

    1. HI Paula,
Poor Nyssa…she always gets neglected…but I love to see for her. I hope she likes her new dress…I think she will…
I bet Linda”s drive was beautiful too. We have the brown eyed susan’s along our roads too and I love seeing them.
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings. Jeanne

  5. Love how you laid out the fabric. So much better than getting it all sewn together and not liking the outcome. I should do this definitely. Like Linda, at first look I too thought it was a lace overlay on the bodice. Not sure how a light ruffle might look below either. I like it as it is. Not too fussy. Now, this dress, I believe can be worn for lots of occasions. With a red velvet belt for the holidays, orange for that special Halloween party, and then shamrock green for St. Paddy’s Day. If not a belt, perhaps a bow, necklace, or pin. It should be a quite versatile piece. Enjoying this one for sure.
Hope you have some free time this weekend to take in the fall season

    1. HI Joy,
I’ll hopefully share the pattern picture Monday so you’ll be able to see what it could potentially look like. There are several ways to make the accents for it…
I do plan to enjoy the weekend!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Ok, now I get it! I sneaked a peek at the pattern. So many things you can do with it too. Erica’s patterns look great. Can’t wait until Monday.

    1. HI Erica,
I did cut the sleeves on the bias, but I just didn’t make them the same. I plan to show your pattern front on Monday and give you credit.
I hope I get some done on it this weekend. I can’t wait to see how it comes together.
      Thanks Erica,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Dear Jeanne, I actually believe I can envision the dress! Wow, I have been hanging out with sewing people for a year now and it’s rubbing off (chuckle). I think Nyssa’s dress will be lovely.
I am looking forward to seeing the Boneka dress which will come next. I am not telling my four Boneka’s about this, however (laugh).

    1. HI Dorothy,
I worked on the dress most of this evening and I am loving the way it looks! I hope everyone else does too. It’s very pretty!!! See how hanging around here is good for you??? :o)

      I’ve been eyeing some fabrics for Noel”s dress… I have a few picked out…
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Jeanne I can imagine the dress and I think it will be darling. Love the fabrics and they look good on Nyssa. Have a great week end.

    1. HI Carole,
You won’t have to imagine anymore as I have most of it constructed and hopefully can share it Monday.
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. It’s 7:30 Monday morning, and the often mentioned Monday column is not showing up for me. I don’t know if that’s a malfunction or whether Sunday brought an interruption in your schedule. I’ll keep checking.
I think Nyssa looks like Cinderella in the pieces of her new dress. I like Joy’s idea of making the dress suitable for holidays with belts or changes of some sort. It looks like that’s your idea too, so this will be fun to watch.
Corn mazes — what a great image for fall. Thanks, Linda. It still looks like summer here, and there’s still nearly a week, but the trees in the mountains are beginning to turn.
Tonight is the end of the Autumn Splendor auction on Ebay.
