Best Birthday Card… EVER!

Well, we rested on Sunday! It felt SO good not to do anything “flooring related!” (except “looking” at our floor.) It’s like it was when I first received Isabelle… I had her in the box, but I kept going into my sewing room and looking at her to see if she was as pretty as she was the last time I looked at her. She was and my floor is!

13 years ago, I took these pictures of our living room… (as I was just looking at all those early pictures of our house, a thought ran through my mind… WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???) But alas, we bought it and we’ve done miracles with it… with lots of hard work and wisdom from the Lord! He’s always giving us creative ideas to make things work…

Anyway, I thought I’d share a few past pictures and then show you what it looks like today… we are hoping to get kitchen floor all finished on Monday… after all it is “Labor Day.”

This was the “lovely” turquoise and olive green shag carpet we ripped up… and exposed those “lovely” plywood floors we’ve been walking on for 13 years.

Here’s another shot of that carpet and the fireplace…

This is what it looked like with the carpet gone… our work was just beginning…

This is what it looked 2 weeks ago when were trying to get it as level as possible…

…and this is what it looks like now! :o) :o) :o) We put in new living room windows, added a new front door, painted the fireplace, painted the walls, (plus much more) and NOW… we have new floors!

So in light of the floor work we’ve done the last week, I thought I’d share with you the birthday card my hubby gave me just a few days ago! My perfectly imperfect floors seem perfect to me now… just like my perfectly imperfect husband! Although I think he’s pretty close to perfect! I love one of them just a little more than the other! :o)

If you want, click on the pictures and they will enlarge.

I’m hoping to share with you the doll “hats” tomorrow… I wanted to do it on Monday… but remember… I was resting! :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Jeanne, I went from “Oh my gosh”, to “Oh how sweet!” in the span of a few minutes! What WERE the previous owners thinking when they put that horrid carpet down? What a complete difference the room looks like now! You mentioned that it is a Victorian house, but that looks very 80’s to me! I think you and George get an A+++ for redoing that room!
Oh, what a SWEET card from George! You are as lucky to have him as he is to have you! Isn’t it wonderful to have someone who appreciates and loves you as much as you do him? You two are a match made in heaven!
I hope the rest helped you both, and that today goes well! Happy Labor Day!

    1. Hi Linda,
I actually never said our house, was Victorian…it’s an 1892 house but it’s a Cottage style.
I AM very blessed to have such a sweet hubby!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. My heart is melting with gratefulness for the bond that you and George have, Jeanne. What a wonderful expression of his love for you in that card. Ahhhh.

And, what a marvelous change in the room you’re showing us. Like Linda said, “what were the previous owners thinking when…..”. You’ve made it lovely.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky, :o)
Now I have 2 favorite things…my hubby and my new living room, dining room and kitchen!!!
      Thank you, Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. A wonderful card with a great message from an obviously special man.
The room transformation is wonderful. The fact it took a little longer than you planned is merely an example of life. Less important things get pushed back. It doesn’t matter now. I looks lovely.

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
The last plank has been laid in place and we can hardly believe how wonderful the room looks now!
Yes, my hubby is pretty special. …I am very blessed to be married to him!
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Interesting pictures. The new look is so pretty. Your home transformation in the last few years has been creative and wonderful. I’m sure both of you are very proud. Your home is lovely and I’m sure your work in the beautiful park- like setting the house sits in was cared by both of you as well.
And what a sweet card from George, very clever and so clever. Both of you are special!
    Enjoy your day! Blessings.

    1. Hi Paula,
I think this new floor in the kitchen, living and dining room is the biggest transformation of anything we’ve done so far. We just can’t get over how nice it is.
Thank you for your kind words Paula.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I would have done the same with that shag carpet. It was such a dark room at first. Love it how it looks now! Aww, that card was so sweet and clever! XD

    1. Hi Christine,
Not only was that turquoise and olive green shag carpet…it was matted down too. This house used to be called “The Fun House.” It was used as a music Studio for the owner after their family outgrew it.
      Thanks Christine,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Can you imagine the look on the faces of the original and former owners of your home? Surprise and happiness I’m sure. The living room/dining room just looks so lovely and fresh now. Lucky you! George too. So glad you whitewashed the fireplace. It was quite a piece before. After our daughter/son in law moved into their home, a huge transformation took place. New paint, flooring, decorating etc. The former owners moved not far away into the same model home that had been upgraded a bit. They actually came knocking wanting to see the transformation of their old home. Our daughter said that they were completely “floored” upon visiting. The lady even ran upstairs to look around and see the transformed master. These were strangers, but daughter is very friendly and didn’t mind the intrusion. I’m sure you will now have a parade of visitors coming to see how you’ve improved your home.
    Great card from George.

    1. Hi Joy,
When we first moved in this house, the lady stopped by a few times…and her son lives, next door to us. Next time he comes over for eggs, we’ll have to invite him in to see the changes!

Our fireplace is the most mammoth thing I’ve ever seen. It was so ugly and the white paint really made it much more appealing. It’s still really too big, but I don’t think I’ll get my hubby to change it…
My hubby has a group of men coming over for a men’s meeting Wednesday evening. I guess they’ll get to see it first.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Wonderful transformation! That turquoise/olive shag was sooooooo 70’s! I even had a “shag rake ” to comb that long pile!

Your honey’s birthday card is SUCH a keeper!!..
    ..and so is he!

    1. Hi Shara,
The house was somewhat remodeled in the 70’s…I bet they got that shag carpet at Karpet Korner in the 70’s!
      Thanks Shara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I second Shara’s Comment: What a wonderful transformation! The ceiling in the first picture is reflecting all the dark finishes and the last one looks so light. I’d bet you don’t notice the ceiling anymore. Beautiful job on everything. Hurray for doing the kitchen too.

You are so fortunate to have found each other. Beautiful sentiments in the card and the note makes it so very special. George is very clever in addition to all of his other qualities.

    1. Hi Susette,
With the new walls and floor, the ceiling doesn’t seem to bother me as much…
We just finished a little while ago and I am so glad we extended the flooring into the kitchen. It makes it really nice having the floor all one pattern in the whole big area.
      Thanks so much, Susette
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Absolutely blown away by how beautiful your floors are but I think even more by the love between you and your hubby! Blessings, beautiful lady!!

  10. Some fashions look good forever and some don’t. The shag rugs are a don’t. You have a lot of things that say, “Keep forever.” Two of them are each other.

I hope your knees are feeling better, the kitchen is finished, the furniture is back in place, and you are thinking of something relaxing before you choose your next project. Put something in the slow cooker and go find a hardware store and a fabric store and then lunch out and dinner in.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I agree with you about shag carpet, although I did see a nice off white one at Dams a while back that we both had to run our fingers through…maybe it wasn’t necessarily a shag, but it was fluffy.
I think we are going to go out tomorrow…not sure about the knees just yet…my left one really needs a break. Good thing we just finished!
      Thank you so much, Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne
