I guess I was so sleep deprived I guess I missed getting the post ready for you. I never would have known it if Joy hadn’t emailed me. She told me you all just started chattering on yesterday’s post. Thanks everyone.
I’ll just give you a short update… my hubby is on day 16 in the hospital…on the 5th day, being taken by ambulance to St. Louis.
His bowel blockage wasn’t actually that… it was cancer…it was so bad they had to remove his stoma and ureters because it was all tangled in the scar tissue and adhesions. The big mass was connected to part of his large intestines so he had that piece cut out and the two ends sewn back together. Since he has no stoma and ostomy bag, he will have to keep the Nephrostomy tubes in his back for the rest of his life.
His surgery was supposed to be 2 hours long… it ended up bring 7.
He had a scary episode 2 nights ago where his blood pressure started dropping quickly and the resident just happened to catch it. They were throwing meds to her and she was connecting them to his pic line… it was a bit crazy for a few moments. She got the meds in just in time… his blood pressure dropped to 40 over 20… she turned and looked at me and said, “your husband is not gonna die tonight!”
He has a whole entourage of tubes and drain bags and 7 machines that are attached to him. He just was helped to the chair…

Oh, Jeanne….oh, my dear, what a couple of weeks you have had! I am so so sorry the cancer came back and you and he are having to deal with all these medical issues right now. My husband never had cancer, but he certainly had several medical emergencies in his life, including THREE pulmonary embolisms (blood clots) at the same time, then some years later, severe diverticulitis which ended up in his losing three feet of his colon and having a colostomy for six months (which was later reversed) and, another time, his pulse rate dropping so sharply, I took him to the ER immediately and he ended up having a pacemaker put in. So I know very well how sleep-deprived the spouse/family can get at times like that. You hardly know which end is up some days!
But….at least it was just forgetting to post one day, albeit under extremely stressful circumstances. I’m sure many of us were thinking about the “other” alternative, having been thru that ourselves.
Okay, now everyone, let’s just breathe. Jeanne is here. George is seriously ill but receiving excellent care, and they are both being covered with prayers from us as well as (in my case) my church’s prayer group. I will email them and update them tonight.
Now for the question: the five clothing items to wear for the rest of my life. Hm. Well, assuming everything would still fit (HA!!!) I would have to include my lavender gingham PLAID (not check) shirtdress my mom made for me for Easter in 1961, I think (9th grade); there are little pink eyelash flowers in some of the white spaces. It was my very most favorite dress EVER, and I wore it so much, I had to patch under the arms! (and, yes, I STILL have it!) Okay, that’s one item. Also my Lands End Sport Cord knit pants (I own several pair–can I have them all?!), my Liberty Lawn blouse I made a couple of years ago and the denim skirt to go with it, the batik knit top I made a few years ago. Oh, I guess that’s five. But I would also need sweaters and jackets, because I’m cold much of the time, and of course we all need underwear and socks! I don’t know, I don’t think I could make it for the rest of my life with only five garments!! Of course, I sew, so I can always make more!! 😉
Oh Jeanne! What you have been going through, I cannot imagine! I just want to hug you! I was so worried after we had not heard from you, and wanted to write you, but felt that you were to preoccupied with other things and I would just get in the way. I will have to say that George seems indestructible, and he just plows through every difficulty, yet somehow comes through stronger and adapts every setback. I pray that is the case again!
As for clothes, I shave to think about that for awhile. I’ll get back with you all later today with my answers!
Jeanne, the first thing I did when i got up this am was to turn on my computer to see if you had some news. Thank you from letting us know what is happening to George, even that it is hard to hear. It is good to know he is in good hands and people who care for him. If all the prayers going up for both you could be seen the hospital room would be full! We love you both and are hoping for the weekend to bring good news to you.
5 clothes? well, a pair of jeans, a swim suit, one pretty long skirt and top, warm sweater, and a tee shirt.
My sons live far away from us as you might remember. They are concerned about us since they are not near so they have looked up some one who could help us if needed. It is true that something could happen to either of us at our age. This lady will come to see us tomorrow just to get to know her. She won’t be helping us unless we need her, but it is helpful to know there could be help if needed.
We are heading for the Y and will check on Y”all later.
That is so thoughtful of your sons, Sissy. I am finding that, as I get older, my son is much more diligent on “checking up” on me almost daily! The other night he called at 2:30 in the morning, worried because I hadn’t replied to his FB messages! (I was still up, of course….) Anyway, I thanked him and said I was just getting ready for bed, and that his dad would be pleased to know he is being present for me. My son lives about 20 miles away, so not all that far, and he has a few friends who could bring him down if needs be (he doesn’t have a car at the moment) or he could take the bus.
The more I think about clothing, Jeanne, I think you mean to actually wear, not your favorites from days past, so my five things would be one nice dress, also some slacks, a pair of capris, and a couple of tops. That would cover a lot of ground for me, since I don’t need a lot of clothes, but surely would need more than those! I never was a clothes person, or even jewelry person either, but do like classic, well made things that last a long time.
I am on my knees in prayer! So hard for you! When you are not at the hospital, you want to be there! and so on! It is the hardest to have your husband ill. Hope this all turns around and both of you can come home! If all our good thoughts and prayers are helping, you will be home soon!
As for clothes, living on a farm, I wear jeans a lot, don’t want to go out mowing the lawn in a dress! I do like clothes, being an only kid, my mother would make or buy me clothes! I had 3 girls and I sewed for them all the time. I also like capris in the summer! Have a good day everyone!
Oh my, Jeanne and George 😭 I am so sorry. What a lot of surgery and tubes. I hope George is feeling okay. You are brave Jeanne. This is really a scary and difficult situation. (I hope you have helpers on the home front and you are not the only one keeping the plates spinning back at the home stead) Ohhh I am so sorry. Yes, I have two prayer groups here with You and George being held up, daily. You must be exhausted.
FIVE pieces of clothing? yikes. I am very active agile and perky and I wear my clothes out. At present I threw on my blue lands end long pants I wore yesterday, they have muddy hands wiped on them but oh well. It is clean mud. I like my lands end pants in many colors. They are comfortable and do not fall off my butt (too low cut) … very much. (I miss the levis jeans they do not make anymore. I have a pair but they are very patched)
I love all of my girly pretty blouses. I have not worn dresses in a while….
This is a very difficult task for me, Jeanne. I am going to imagine the house needs to be evacuated and I need to grab and go. I would grab my jeans and my cute blouses… probably more than 5 …. three pants and two blouses? Three blouses two pants? One pants (my go with all blue ones, or the red ones!!) and 4 blouses? 😬
It is Friday, I hope you have sun shine Jeanne. I hope today is a smooth day. Please give George hugs and kisses from all of us.
Haha, I love that, Rosemary–“clean mud”! My mom used to say that when she’d been working in the garden, that it was “clean dirt”.
I have red pants, too! From Land’s End of course. And FUCHSIA (my favorite), and lavender and…..
George, is such a strong guy and just keeps on ticking like the Energizer Bunny. I can’t believe that it has been 16 days in the hospital. Time flies when you’re having fun, but definitely not in this case. I’m sorry about the tubes remaining, but the alternative is unrealistic. So, from my perspective, it looks like a lot of healing is going on. Bad stuff out and on with the next step. And even with the medical equipment, George, is up and in a chair. That is such good news to hear. I hope that Jeanne, has been able to go home for a break and check in. Maybe do laundry too. I am so glad that we have an update today. Thanks Jeanne. We know that you are under extreme stress, so please take care of yourself. Your presence with George, and being his advocate is remarkable. Keep up the good work and take a break when you can.
Wow, as to the five clothing items that I can continue using for the rest of my life? That would be: two pair of jeans, two solid color tee shirts, and a Columbia fleece jacket. That about covers it. 🙂
I finally got back to weed pulling yesterday. We’re getting zucchini now, so I want to make that zucchini dish I like soon. The tomato crop is very slowly producing. But, other person manages to keep the cherry tomatoes in line as he eats them off the vine while standing in the garden. He traded a handful over the fence to our neighbor Becky, and in return received a couple of red Gravenstein apples. Nice.
I took a pic of my latest dolls and sent it to Jeanne, for use in the future. I had included a RRed Siblie doll. But, I couldn’t remember her name. I had redressed her some time ago, but for the life of me, the name escaped me. I searched the archive, but still wasn’t sure. With some help, I think it’s been figured out now. I’m going to check the archive again today.

Since I hadn’t been in my sewing/doll room much lately I too started forgetting the names of some of my dolls. Fortunately for me I labeled the drawers that hold their clothes so I could have a refresher coarse. I couldn’t remember the maker of my Romy and Valentine dolls so I had to look that up. It is Sylvia Natterer. But I was glad to see I remembered most of their names. I paid my second installment on my Moppet Bailey yesterday. I guess I’ll get the final invoice when the doll is ready to ship. Can’t wait. I may decide to make her my last doll. I really have run out of room.
Oh, a new Meadow girl heading your way soon. Nice! After my recent name lapse, I plan to make little paper bands with their name that slips over their hand to the wrist. I did that when I switched wigs on a couple awhile back. At least I know those. 🙂 And if they have any of the clothes in which they arrived, I’m good. But, it appears that I mostly switch the outfits so it can be very confusing. It won’t be the last doll around here, but the storage is a real problem. Must work on that. 🙂

I also have about 20 of the ORIGINAL (as in, soft-sculpted heads with hand-painted features) Cabbage Patch Kids, and I’m not sure I remember who each of them is any more! I will have to go thru and figure that all out pretty soon. Daniel sure wouldn’t know!
My “memory” problem is with the dolls pets! Each doll has her pet, and while some of them are already named, some aren’t so I gave them names, but try as I might, I forget what they were a lot of the times! I really should write that down! Sometimes I even have trouble with the original names, the ones AG gave them!
Jeanne, so sorry about the recent situation with George, but it’s wonderful that he has a crew of doctors who are helping him in every way they can. He certainly has been through a lot and I truly truly hope things get better for him and for you.
You are a very special couple and I know you both rely on your faith to get you through.
The 5 clothes I would want/ a pair of jeans, a reasonable shirt that would go with it, A nightgown and I’m putting the two types of underwear as one and a Jacket of which I am not sure which of the ones I have I would take- Considering what they’re made out of.
I’m home putting things away, organizing our drawers and hoping soon to truly enjoy myself with family. It’s hard for me to stop organizing because I enjoy it so much.

Oh Jeanne….you and your husband have been thru a lot….a major bump in the road, so to speak. I always tell my daughters that I will keep on trucking for as long as I can and it’s those positive thoughts that keep us going thru difficult times. Just as you and husband are doing….all of the prayers, love, meds, dedicated doctors and nurses, good nutrition and plenty of rest allow healing to take place. I truly believe that our bodies have miraculous healing capabilities with all of these factors in place along with God’s help….we are never alone…he is at our side all along. Some healing take a little longer than others and that’s where our patience comes in. Thank you for keeping us posted about your situation and providing questions for your readers to think about and respond to….and for you keeping the post afloat!
So…if we had to chose 5 clothing items to wear for the rest of our life? Well, I need soft, non-itchy fabric, loose enough to cover my umbilical hernia, cool enough for nearly year-round warm weather, and rubber-soled shoes that provide foot support and stability when standing or walking, and maybe a throw-on shawl for when it’s chilly! That would be one of my salmon or pink tee-shirts, a gauzy, printed, long loose tunic top over the tee-shirt, a pair of my lightweight wide-leg knit slacks with the super comfortable elastic waistband, my compression underpants…and my basic slip-on Skechers! Maybe one of my throw-on lightweight shawls for when it is chilly…which can also double as a lightweight blanket if a nap is calling your name!
Fun question…didn’t take long, since I wear the same type of clothing everyday!

Oh, Jeanne, what a horrible couple of weeks George has been through. So sorry about the tubes remaining, but glad to hear the bad stuff is out and George is able to get in a chair. He is very resilient. Praying he will be able to come home as soon as reasonable.
As to five pieces of clothing. Hmmm. That would be very hard here in our climate. I would need my warm wool coat, a nice dress, a pair of jeans, a top, and a nightgown.
I really liked clothes as a teen (typical) and as an only child my parents bought me clothing and I used my allowance and summer job money for clothes and records.
Jeanne, thanks so much for the update. Just wish it was better news but y’all are in my thoughts and prayers every day. I’m praying for healing for George and strength for both of you to weather this storm. With what I have been dealing with I just remind myself daily there are others far worse off. So I pray for those I know of, and you and George are at the top of my list.
Five garments I would keep forever. Well definitely my one pair of black slacks. They are so comfortable and versatile and, of course, go with anything. I buy these wonderful tops from Serengeti. They are poly/spandex silky knit and are beautiful. They wash up great and never need ironing. I have several but would pick three of them and then I would keep my pretty white capris that go with all the tops. Writing this makes me think I probably should get rid of most of what I have stuffed in the closet since what I mentioned is what I wear most often to church and other special events. But I would miss my knit pants and capris and pretty Henley shirts that I wear for every day.
Well Bertha went through Houston yesterday and had with her some pretty hefty thunderstorms with a lot of lightening and rain. But I would not know this if I hadn’t watched the evening news yesterday since out here we barely got a drop. I was watching the progress on my phone and it was showing some big storms headed this way and as I watched they got to our doorstep and then dissipated. Some areas got so much rain they were under flood watch. But she went through quickly and all was quiet by 8 pm.
That is very fortunate about the storm. I know a little rain would be welcome, but not the big stuff.
Are your dolls planning a pool party any time soon? I always love seeing that perfect pool. 🙂
Jeanne, I am so glad that the missed post was a memory lapse. I spent a lot of time on my own in my workroom yesterday and prayed for you both in the quiet. I spared a thought for the chickens and tomatoes as well. I hope someone is looking after everything at home. I will continue praying.
I don’t buy many clothes. In the winter I wear slacks (not jeans), light sweaters and a cardigan or jacket of some kind and in the summer, t’s and blouses, very occasionally a skirt. If I only had 5 items I guess it would be 1 pair of slacks, 1 skirt, 1 t and 1 blouse and a jacket/cardigan.
I had a call from the sewing machine people. Their repairer said he wouldn’t give it a service, it was sewing beautifully (which I knew and it was only serviced in November). He thinks it is the foot pedal (which I thought too). They are fairly universal, and they sell them in the shop for $180, If it doesn’t work, if the pedal isn’t the problem, they will take the pedal back and have another look at the machine. I can collect it on Monday. Sam will be pleased as it means she can have the other machine back which, as far as she is concerned, is now hers!!
I did manage to finish quilting the blocks and I am now trimming them. I will be able to start putting them together soon, Not today though, I rang the president of my Cake Decorating Guild that I resigned from last year. I had some odds and ends that belonged to the guild and a few items that I won’t use. They are having a pot luck lunch today and she invited me so have to make something to take I usually make my cheese rolls which always go down well. A bit messy to make but very tasty.
We had a lovely day yesterday (19C) till about 4.30, then the temp dropped to 9 and it started raining. Managed to get the washing dry and inside before that happened. It is 7C at the moment (7.30am) and supposed to rain all day. Sorry Joy, no snow, I don’t think we will get any now this weekend.

And that is great news about the machine, but the pedal not so much. I wonder if it is a loose wire or something repairable? You could do that with my old Singer pedal. But, the Babyloc I now have, looks like a completely sealed piece. Probably a throw away that can’t be repaired. Kind of sad. But good to know that they are now universal for future reference.
