What a sweet baby doll! If I remember correctly, the mold was originally created by Boots Tyner, who sculpted a number of darling baby doll heads back in the day. This one is from a mold called “Sugar Britches”, if I remember correctly. I remember them from when I was making porcelain dolls, although I didn’t make this particular one myself. The porcelain baby doll I made was a reproduction of the vintage Bye-Lo baby.

Generally speaking, her (Boots’) dolls were created with weighted cloth bodies, so it felt like you were holding a real baby in your arms. Later on, vinyl doll artists such as Lee Middleton also created baby dolls with weighted bodies. I have a few of Lee’s, and they are wonderful, too!

A side note: I have joined the 21st century–albeit reluctantly! Yup, this grandma now has a smart phone! I just got it yesterday, and another visit to the Verizon store was needed before it was completely connected to my old AT&T number. I’ve had my cell service with AT&T since before Ron retired (which was 2001), and was getting fed up with the crummy flip phone I had. So Daniel and I talked, and we decided it might be smart to get a two-line service, so that’s what we did yesterday. So far I have managed to get Facebook on it (gotta have That!), and he called me and we did a video call tonight!! I have a long way to go before I feel even halfway proficient at what all the different “apps” are for, and how to do things.

While I was at the Verizon store today, I happened to sit next to a young gal who had ordered a flip phone on line (no idea where), and it was PINK!!! She said it came with three different faceplates (the one she was using had swirls, and could be described as “groovy”!! 😂). I had serious phone envy!! But then I told her and her friend about the block/cord I bought at Ace yesterday, which was LAVENDER, and her friend’s eyes lit up. (It also comes in pink or blue.). They were heading over there next!! 😂🤣😂

Thanks for the wonderful history lesson on baby dolls. I’ve never been much into owning baby dolls but I do love seeing them and learning about them.

Charlotte, what you are describing about the doll, really makes sense to me! It almost describes the doll perfectly! So that is a Boots Tyler doll? Should there be any markings on the doll itself to really know? I have never undressed this doll, ,since she has a cloth, weighted body, and really is not a doll to change clothes or play with. I just thought she was made by a local craftsman. I am going to have to do some sleuthing here! Thank you for the information!

I do not have a cell phone!! People cannot believe me when I say that, but since I have been deaf since childhood, I never really used a phone. There was always someone I was living with that could, so I never had the need. I do have a phone for the hearing impaired, but use it only occasionally, never a daily thing with me. My iPad and our laptops, and computers keep me connected to everything, plus I am not very good with technology! Learning how to use a phone is not the most fun thing to look forward to, since It’s bad enough when starting g a new computer system or new iPad!

On a side note, the quilt that the doll is laying on is really blue and white like it is on the left side of the picture. The right side looks like it is gray and white, probably due to the light next to the bed.

Linda, believe it or not, but I rarely use my iPhone to make a call. I use it to read things like email or check Facebook or take photos. It’s like having a portable computer. It’s great to have while waiting for appointments or when I want to look up something on Google and need a quick answer. I have one with a larger screen so it is easier to see for me. I have on occasion called other person who appears to be lost in Costco, but that is rare. 🙂 I think that you would enjoy having one.

I have a tendency to get off without my cell phone but am glad I have it when David and I are shopping at Walmart. We usually split the list and he goes one way and I go the other and we meet up front to check out. But he can take longer to pick up a few items than anyone I know so I usually have to call and remind him I’m up front waiting.

Linda, yes, it’s a Boots Tyner doll. Boots Tyner was an artist who did the original sculpts from which the molds were made. I think there were some commercially-produced dolls from her molds, but she also sold molds to small doll-making studios, so just about anyone could make one if they so wished. She did several different faces, of which your Sugar Britches is probably one of her most popular ones.

You can take off her bonnet and lift up her hair and look at the back of her head–“Boots Tyner” or maybe “Sugar Britches” might be incised (as part of the mold) there. In addition, you might find a name or initials of the individual or company who made your particular doll. When I made porcelain dolls, I usually “engraved” (scratched!) my initials in each porcelain piece, for identification when they came out of the kiln. Or, a person could use a fine-tipped felt pen to sign the back of her head once all the firing was done.

I can understand your not using a phone; my friend Judy was deaf, also–when I first met her in 9th grade, she had 50% hearing, and it worsened as she got older. She could read lips very very well, though, and in later years, she did get one cochlear implant. She worked so hard to learn to use it as well as improve her speech (and her spelling improved, too, once she could hear how words were properly pronounced). Sadly, her body rejected the implant after a couple of years, which was a big disappointment to her. She was almost totally deaf by the time she died a few years ago.

The quilt is beautiful! I did wonder about the color on the right side of the picture–thanks for explaining about it!

  3. Linda, what a beautiful baby doll. (and incredibly lovely blue quilt with Dresden flowers and sashing) This is an adorable setting.
Thank you both of you for the history lesson. Charlotte, your information is so excellent.
Look at this! It is Thursday already, How did that happen?
I have “crafting group” here in the neighborhood. I am bringing a zillion (really just a huge pile) flying geese and half square triangle squares to trim to “size tiny”.
    I will see how far I get….
Jeanne, I hope you and George are having a restful period between doctor visits right now.
The weather guessers are always being dramatic. After a few days of quite low temperatures in the 60’s, and yesterday the temp zoomed up to 79º, the weather guys can’t resist getting wildly dramatic about the record breaking “extreme heat” (?) Today and tomorrow will be 75º here in Northern Virginia, which does not seem unusual. News and weather are now a panic situation! 😱
Either case, we are looking at (I believe) lower temperatures than we have ever had for the beginning of October. Happy October! 🍁 🥳 🎃 🍂 🍎 🀨 🍻 🥧 🥮 💕

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Rosemary! I love the quilt, it just makes the room look so cheerful and a perfect setting for the baby doll!

So are you quilting the geese or painting them? Your craft group sounds like fun!

The weather here is much like yours, uo and down!

  4. Charlotte, you really are amazing, you know so much about dolls, you make and made dolls, you sew of course and, well, you just are amazing.

Linda, the doll is so sweet, and so is the quilt, I imagine that you made it? Thank you for sharing these!

Jeanne, I wonder if you and George are home today and I hope you can get into sewing again, maybe baby steps at least. Sending love and payers always.

Not much going here, my eye doc saw that my eyes needed some work , he did one eye on Tuesday and will do the other soon. It did made my eye clearer. Peyton has to go to the dentist today for a bridge so I will see what I can do to keep finding things to give to Goodwill. We have been taking things to them so much that I wonder if they will start hiding if they see us coming!!

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Oh no, Sissy, I did not make the quilt! I have no patience at all for quilting, but we did find it at a darling quilt shop in Branson, years ago. I am not a “blue person”, and really have no blue in my house, but this room is blue and white, with yellow furniture! Go figure!
      Thank you for the compliments!

  5. Joy in northern CA

What a treat to see Linda’s beautiful doll which is so lovingly displayed on that wonderful quilt. I hope that everyone observes the Sh sh sh sign and lets the baby keep napping.
Sounds like Rosemary is having comfortable temps, while here, we’re back to heat. It was 91 yesterday and today slightly cooler. Looks like the roofing guys are going to be cooking on Monday too. At least it isn’t supposed to rain. So, with the heat, not much is getting done outdoors around here except watering. It looks kind of odd out in front with the one trimmed oleander and the other huge one next to it that we have yet to tackle. It will have to wait for cooler weather as it is so much work to do the cutting/pruning and then more cutting to fit the remains into the yard waste can. Ours was stuffed this week with the last oleander cuttings.
Congrats to Charlotte on her new phone. I’m sure that she will enjoy it.
Hope that Jeanne, can squeeze in a few moments in the sewing room and maybe make a simple costume for one of her dolls. Ghosts are pretty easy. 🙂 I always wanted to make s ghost costume from a doily with damage, but haven’t done it yet. Wouldn’t want to cut into anything in good condition. 🙂

Thanks, Joy! It is usually quiet around here, so the baby sleeps pretty well!
I know how it is with the weather, no matter where we all seem to live, Mother Nature is always testing us!

    What a beautiful baby doll.

It took me forever to get a smart phone and half the time I can’t remember where I put it. Sometimes I put it on the charger and forget about it. My family gets most annoyed with me but I just don’t feel the need to stay connected all the time. David and I got our smart phones after we had a weather emergency here in Sealy and wouldn’t have known it if Dionne hadn’t called and told us. Fortunately our part of town was not involved but what if it had been? I definitely have the weather app on my phone. As a matter of fact I have three weather apps.

Since I haven’t been in touch with my Sofa Sisters much lately I thought I’d give you an update on my mobility progress. I now have two chiro appointments a week and a massage therapist appointment once a week. There are improvements but in such tiny increments I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever get back to walking normally again. But I’m not giving up. My hips are more even now so I guess that’s a start. Anxiously awaiting cooler weather so I can take my rollator and walk at the park. Everything else I do is limited to short bursts of strength and stretch. Necessary but it takes longer for results. Walking has always been the go-to exercise for me and I’ll be glad to get back to it. I recently managed to set up a standing appointment for my massages. Having three appointments a week all over the place and not knowing when they would be made it difficult to get anything else done. I was very glad to snag the last massage of the day on Wednesday afternoon 3:30-5:00 p.m. Thus I’m able to go an hour earlier and take advantage of the wellness program and use the machines. Then get a massage. It was the time and day I wanted so I’m over the moon I could get that. Since I just firmed that up I’m going to see if I can do the same with my chiropractor so I don’t have to worry about reminders. Otherwise I am doing really great.

Prayers for Jeanne and George that things will improve for them. Praying for healing for George and strength and peace for both.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

So nice to hear from you again, Barbara! I also don’t feel the need to be in touch with people every minute! Phones are nice, but way too overrated, I think. I have the tv on all the time, not exactly sitting g and watching it 24/7, but on and catch things now and then. I like to do things without being interrupted all the time.

I certainly hope you continue to feel better and are happy with your new chiropractor!

    2. Joy in northern CA

Well, all the things that you are doing sound positive, so keep it up and hopefully, soon that cooler weather will come and you can get in more walking.
Any sewing going on for the dollies? I found a free witch hat pattern for 14 and 18 inch dolls, so had to go to Michael’s to buy some felt. Can you believe that I had no black or orange felt already here? Anyway, I talked other person into stopping there on the way back as we had to go to Lowe’s to pick up some flexible pipe to run the drain line further out rather than behind the retaining wall. Couldn’t believe the price for crummy plastic flexible pipe. All construction stuff has gone up tremendously here. Has your husband’s business seen prices rise too?

I’ve added in my rowing machine to my “get better” agenda. That should help strengthen my core and glutes, which seem to be weak at the moment. Just got back from a chiro appointment. I told him it seems that whatever I do to get better only makes me more sore. I think he was trying hard not to laugh. I just told him I’m not giving up. About the pipe. The swimming pool I made a couple years ago was done with PVC. I have several patterns for PVC doll furniture, but the cost of the stuff makes me put off doing anything with it right now. Yes, David has definitely noticed that any type of construction, major or minor, these days costs way more than it should or did a few years ago. So far we are behind in starting the housing construction and we are hoping that when we do start the cost of things will be coming down. Okay so we are cockeyed optimists.

  8. Karen from Kentucky

It is so nice to see your doll, Linda! She is beautiful. You took great care of her over the years. I really like the embroidered flowers on your pillowcase, too.

Today we spent the morning visiting the kids’ school at their open house. Lilly had a blast playing with the little girls at recess. D and L were coloring in a coloring book part of the time to help them be quiet. Mother Prioress was teaching the fourth graders how to hit the right tones for Gregorian Chant. That was interesting.

In other news we made an offer on a house and it was accepted so it looks like we will be moving in November probably. The driveway is super steep and rutted so we need to add gravel when we get a chance. It’s about 10 minutes from here. Busy times. I have hardly got anything packed yet. May just keep the clothes in the dresser drawers and use them like boxes 🙂 Dominic and Lilly like to help me carry empty boxes to the stack downstairs 🙂

    1. Joy in northern CA

Congrats on the new home. So much to do when packing for a move, but I’m sure that the girls will be a big help.

  9. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Karen! I love that pillow too, so different!

How exciting that you will be moving to a new house! You certainly have the helpers you will need for the move! Can you believe we have been in our house for 53 years? I hate to think we would ever have to move!

Linda, your doll is lovely and I love the quilt too. NZ is right under the hole in the ozone layer and UV is really bad here. On top of that, the house was built back to front so the lounge is the coldest room in the house, it doesn’t get any sun till 5pm or so and the bedrooms face north (like your south) so get the sun from morning about 8am till 5pm so in the summer we have to close the curtains all day otherwise we wouldn’t be able to sleep. (We don’t have A/C in the bedrooms). It means that curtains and quilts fade really badly and often rot. The high UV also means high Melanoma too. We don’t have any creatures that want to kill us but the sun tries instead. What I was meaning amongst all the waffle is that I couldn’t have a doll on any of the beds in this house and my quilts don’t last long either.
Karen, my sister and her husband moved last year after 56 years to a smaller bungalow. They might not have done but their daughter has a degenerative brain disease and needs a wheelchair, it was impossible to get the wheelchair up the many steps to their old house. The new house is close to their son, only a few doors away, and on the flat so no steps. Fortunately, they love the new house and don’t miss the old one at all. I think they are struggling to find places to put things, I suspect a lot has gone to charity shops.
Charlotte, I used to have a non-smart phone. I never remembered to charge it and my family used to get very annoyed when they couldn’t get hold of me. I was given an old smart phone about 10 yrs ago and loved it. The first time my son called me on it and I answered he was amazed. He was so used to me not answering. I have had a few since then. Now I hardly ever use my landline and use texting a lot. I can’t keep it in my pocket, it is always falling out so I have a small shoulder bag that I use most of the time.
Barbara I am so glad that you have found someone to help, I hope you get to walking soon.
It is 9am and I have stuff to get on with. Have a good day everyone

    1. Linda in St. Louis

So sorry you can’t have sunshine shining in your house, since it fades things. That can happen here too, but I have to have my drapes and curtains open most all the time, even the front t door stays open, but we have a full glass storm door, so it acts like a window. I just have to have my house as open as I can, no shades or covered uo windows for me!

I can imagine that hur sister and husband love the new house so much better, without all those steps! Anything to make life easier is a plus!

Thank you for the compliments on the doll and quilt!

  11. Such a busy day and now I’m finally back on to see this. Your baby doll is very sweet, Linda. The blue Dresden plate quilt is beautiful.I love blue in many shades, my favorite color. I have one my grandmother made carefully stored in many colors along with her others.
Quick comment on cell phones. I do have one, but I never take it with me around town. Always a friend or the library or a business I could stop in for help. My phone is mostly a camera anyway.
I need to start thinking about making dinner now.

  12. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Laura! I agree with you that a cell phone is a good thing to take pictures with, and I do the same with my iPad. I do have a nice camera too for pictures, so no need for a phone for pictures. I’m with yu on not wanting to carry around a cell phone constantly.
