Shopping for the wedding…

Rebecca and I took a little day trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri today. It’s about 45 minutes away from our house. It was supposed to be rainy most of the day, but it didn’t start until about noon and then it was just kind of damp the rest of the day… but it was still a nice day.

The first place we hit was an outlet store for fabrics. Linen and drapery and upholstery and sheer fabrics. It’s called RM Coco and we got there right when they opened… There’s a room called the “Pound Room” and all the fabrics in there are sold for $1.00/pound! It’s pretty fun to go in there…

And DO THEY EVER have the fabrics… look at this…anything you can think of…

This was just one walkway…

Rebecca was looking for fabrics for her table coverings in kind of natural colors. She wants to use things like wood, lanterns and some garlands of eucalyptus as her decorations. I wasn’t trying to sway her one way or another; she seemed to know what she wanted. So I just gave some advice on the fabrics and how they would work.

When we got up to the front, the lady stacked them on the scale…13 pounds (translated to $13! Woohoo! She was thrilled!

She did find one fabric that she is going to use for a swag for the ceremony… It was a really soft and fluid fabric in a natural color and it was on a bolt, but the lady said we could have the whole thing for $6.00! We didn’t know how many yards were on the bolt, but it was pretty thick… (When we got home we measured it and there are 12 1/2 yards on it.) FOR SIX DOLLARS! Rebecca said that was the bargain of the day!

We went to Tuesday Morning and Rebecca wanted to buy these new curtains for me for my birthday… I thought I liked them, but now that they are up… I’m not sure… I was trying to figure out what was the problem. I love how sheer they are and soft and very pretty, but I think it’s the geometric diamond shape I’m struggling with. I think I’m more of a floral, or romantic kind of fabric person and these might seem too modern… I’m not sure how to tell her I might want to take them back… EEK! There’s not a Tuesday Morning store any closer to us to exchange them. I’ll figure it out, but this is what they look like now… hanging up. Rebecca even put them up for me when we got home…Double EEK!

We were getting ready to go into another store when we saw this… Looks like an ordinary F15O red truck doesn’t it?

An older man with a cane got out of it… look closer… :o)

They’re even on the front bumper. :o)

In TJ Maxx we were looking for a new bedspread for me and Rebecca, again, found this and thought I might like it…It’s a lightweight Matlasse/Matelasse coverlet and I thought it would look great in my room… I absolutely love it, but I’m not sure… I asked Cindy how much white can you have in a room and we started a LONG text session back and forth about it… then we dabbled in a few other colors and who knows what I’ll do or end up with… I did package it back up after I looked at it on my bed… I think seeing it on my bed is what made me have doubts about the curtains… the bedspread is more romantic looking; curvy and pretty and the curtains are modern and straight lines.

We went to the Goodwill and just to let all you ladies know, I was thinking about sewing when I was in there… I found this gallon zip lock bag filled with all kinds of baby shower things, but I also saw lots of ribbon in there too… so for $1.00, I splurged and got it!

This is what was in the bag when I dumped it out…

I separated it all out…

This is the keep pile…

I’m going to keep these to tie around baby gifts… (maybe…)

…and this is going back to Goodwill…

We got several things for the wedding besides the fabrics, but I didn’t take pictures of Rebecca’s stuff. We had lunch at a fabulous Chinese buffet and enjoyed each other’s company very much! It was a really wonderful day!

Saturday we are going to have to clean like the dickens as Karn is coming Sunday to finalize a few things in person with Rebecca. I’ll be sleeping back in my sewing room one more time… :o)

See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

Some serious shopping envy here, Jeanne, with your visit to RM Coco! I would love to wander up and down those aisles!! What a good deal Rebecca got on everything, too!!

Now about the curtains–I really Love them, and I think they look really pretty with the headboard against them. Even though they’re not really floral/romantic/etc. type of fabric, I think they work with your headboard. However, the current bedspread (the squares) is fighting with the curtains in that first picture, and I think the new bed covering is fighting a bit, too–maybe it’s just a bit too “busy”, or maybe too “white”, I’m not sure.

You might try spreading some of your pieces of fabric in different colors over the pillow area of the bed, to see if maybe you just need to add a bit of color. Not that you would use any of those fabrics for a bed covering, but just to give yourself of other colors you might watch for.

You found some goodies at the thrift store! I see I’m not the only one to buy a package of assorted items, take out the ones I want, and give back the rest! You have some nice ribbons there, that will make good sashes or bonnet ties or whatever on future dolly outfits. I think the pink satin stripe is my favorite, although those checks will add a nice touch to some of your flowery outfits.

What a fantastic day you had, considering it was a Friday the 13th, Jeanne! We were sitting in the dark here just about for 19 hours after a power outage due to Thursday evening storms! it was Friday the 13th at it’s finest! Cleaning up the yard was the fun part of the day, if you can call that fun! I am NOT a pioneer girl in the least, and I want my electricity, TV, internet and phone, thank you!

First, I want to say, Cape Girardeau, one of my favorite and fondest towns! Where I went to college and met Michael! Such fond memoires there, but I can tell you now, there was NOT a TJ Maxx back then, or Tuesday Morning either! Sears was as fancy as you could get!

Now as far as your curtains, I think maybe if you got a sheer, plain white fabric and made a swag over the curtains, that would look much more interesting. I have these two gold sconces on either end of my living room window, making it look a bit wider than it is, and have draped a sheer fabric over that. I’ll send a picture so you might get a better idea, but I think it would look good in your bedroom, and the curtains you have would work.

I think you need something more substantial for your bedspread, unless you use this folded at the end of the bed on top of THE bedspread. I would use softly colored pillows on the bed for contrast, but nothing blaring orange, pink or lime green!! If you prefer a white bedspread, maybe a pretty dust ruffle in a soft color? By the way, your doors look great!

As far as all that material you were able to get, WOW! It looks like Rebecca has been planning her wedding for years, and knows exactly what she wants! She will be a very happy bride! Her wedding theme is just like she is, original, and casual and thrifty! No doubt she knows herself vey well!

That truck, well, can you imagine us with dolls all over our cars? Ha, ha!

The baby shower package was so full of great ideas and things you can use even for dolls! All those cute ribbons, and I do remember those little plastic buggys!

That is so neat that you found a store that sold such cheap fabric! I bet it was a lot of fun there.

You could just show Rebecca your blog post about the curtains she got for you, and I think she will understand. We have a Tuesday Morning here. It is next to Ollie’s. I think the whiteness of the curtains and the bedspread look nice together.

It is fun to shop for cheap deals at thrift stores.

Is that ok if I share the pickup picture with my siblings? They like to send texts of interesting or expensive vehicles they come across. The other day one of them sent a picture of a stuffed Superman somehow attached to a car.

    1. Hi Karen
Sure…go ahead and share that truck picture…I’m sure I’m not the first to take a picture of it! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

What a wonderful day! Great fun, food and genuine friendship too. Nice to have such a lovely daughter. Boys here, no girls. Iā€™d keep those darling little baby shower things. You might even find the rubber duckies useful for props for an Easter šŸ£ dress or even a baby shower decoration. They look so tiny. How about some color or print in the bedspread? Be brave now that the room is looking so great. Congratulations on a happy shopping day.

I like the curtains. They are a bit geometric, but the lines are soft, not sharp. I am concerned that they might be dust catchers and that they might limit your other choices. I think you might choose a focal point, probably the bedspread, and choose that first, then develop the room around it. Charlotte’s idea of trying different fabrics that you already have just to work out colors seems like a good one to me.

I like options, and one thing I did was use sheets to make covers for an old comforter — that way I can change the colors of my “bedspread” without the storage space needed for several quilts. Like Linda, I have plain sheers on the windows — they go with anything. Besides, my mother hand-hemmed them for me.

Your day sounds wonderful. I’m glad you had a chance to shop and enjoy the day with Rebecca before the Delta part of the pandemic gets worse. Colorado has been fortunate so far but in the last few days we’ve gone from doing quite well to high alert in my county. I’m waiting to see if the planned “in-person” school openings will move back to distance education. The library where I used to work was going to go full-service and friends who have been working from home now have to think about clothes and make-up and getting accustomed to real shoes again — I’m afraid that by the time school starts, everything will have to go back into the closet and they’ll be back to the old computer and jeans routine.

Linda’s advice about avoiding glaring colors was funny. I think if anything that bright got close to Jeanne’s house, the house would close it’s doors and windows and refuse to let it in.

Dear Jeanne, what a fun mother-daughter day.

I think that the curtains are pretty but they compete with the design on your head board. As you said, you are more romantic in taste and the shapes in the curtain are not romantic.

You can always use the curtains as backdrops in doll photos. Of course, you might need to cut them down a bit. I could also see them used as table runners. This is coming from the non-crafter so I could be totally offer here (laugh).

It’s wonderful that you daughter has a vision for her wedding and is willing to work to pull it together. That is not always the case.

I just learned that this is Afternoon Tea Week! It is celebrated this year between August 9 and August15 in the UK. As it turns out, my friends and I took Afternoon Tea on Wednesday. We didn’t know about the Awareness Week then or we would have made a big toast. We will definitely do that next year. I will send through a photo of our tea day.

Oh yay. Shopping, my favorite. Unfortunately, there is no fabric store similar anywhere around here, but you certainly scored some deals. Can’t wait to see one of the tables all set up come wedding time. For a simple wedding, you’re going all out. So fun.
As to the curtains, I really like the look. Brings a more modern feel which is so in style today. Now, I would paint that headboard black for contrast and find a bedspread in colors and print you like. Then I would use the matelassĆ© folded across the foot of the bed. I might even paint those nightstands black too. But, that is just my taste. šŸ™‚
As to the goodie bag, send all the leftovers back, but I think the little buggies and duckies would look sweet tied to the top of a package as well.
So glad you had a fun day and great lunch. About time you had an excursion after all of the destruction/construction you’ve been doing lately.
Had to go to Joann’s yesterday. I went for scrapbook paper and came home with fabric instead. Just what I need too. But, it spoke to me. What could I do? I may have to explore Michael’s at some point as I need to find some stone look paper for the swimming pool I’m going to attempt to make. After the tent I made last year and the take over of the dining room table, I’ll have to find elsewhere to work on it. Other person will not be happy. If anyone has looked on RubyRed Global, they have the instructions for the pool. Fits the RRFF kids perfectly.
Have a great weekend everyone. šŸ™‚

So, decided to check out some decorating trends and found that shabby chic has been out for several years, but country chic is in! Wood tones are back finally. Since it sounds like you are returning the curtains unless you put them in Rebecca’s room, how about Roman shades for the window instead? I love that look and it would compliment your new stylish paint and flooring and not be overly gaudy either. What does Cindy say? Not that you aren’t a great decorator also, because you are. šŸ™‚
Here, we’re trying to fix the plumbing leak in my bathroom sink. Can’t fit in the new cartridge that is supposed to fit but does not. Rats! Back to Home Depot. Such a pain.

    Good morning, Jeanne et al,

Jeanne, I am so happy you and Rebecca had such an enjoyable and fruitful day. And the bargains are exceptional! Just love that.

I also loved that Rebecca wanted to treat you to the curtains for your birthday (which is when? How many?) However, I am not a fan of that geometric print especially in a bedroom (and house) that tends toward a more classical, traditional bent in decor like yours. I agree with your inclination for a small floral motif. Furthermore, those raised fluffy lines are perfect dust catchers. Definitely would not work out here where I live. Got dust by the tons. Perhaps you could use these as a shower curtain (with a colored liner, maybe?) I think Rebecca will understand. Maybe put them in HER bedroom in the house since she wonā€™t be using it much longer? (And I donā€™t mean to make you cry here. Giving you a hug.)

As for the spreadā€¦.very nice for summer. Although it strikes me that many of the sofa sisters are big on white, either walls or other decor pieces, I am definitely not. As I said before, there is not a white wall in this house. Too much white makes me think of beach houses and summer. If I had a beach house, it would be mostly white inside. To me, your bedroom needs some color to create interest.

My thoughts here: have you seen in hotels where they have a folded coverlet at the foot of the beds (to keep shoes, feet from dirtying the spreads) ? They arenā€™t supposed to cover the whole bed, but they fold over once and drape down the sides a ways. You could make one of these that is reversible to get two different looks with color and or pattern. For winter, I would go with a pretty comforter along the lines of what Suzette showed us. That was a real classic. Just my thoughts.

The truck cracked me up. So did Lindaā€™s suggestion of doing the same but with dolls. Oh, man!

As for the Goodwill baggy. Seems to me, mother-of-the-bride, that you are thinking more along the lines of the NEXT kind of shower for Rebecca? Ha!

Have a great day, everyone, and a super Sunday. Take care. And Marilyn is right. We need to be a lot more mindful about where we go and in what company, and I am saying to take your masks. We were told that the vaccine was not 100% effective to stave off the virus, so there are more and more ā€œbreakthroughā€ cases. Vaccinated people are getting milder cases, but we are not done, and to think we are 100% ā€œsafeā€ is not wise.

    Hugs,
    Sally

I do love the curtains but I agree the design doesnā€™t match the headboardšŸ˜§ you will have time to do the bedroom after the wedding.šŸ¤— Iā€™m in the car so short msgšŸ„“

What a great mother – daughter shopping day for a memorable occasion.
Your antique piano to headboard you designed is so perfect as is, it shows the floral curvy carving that you highlighted by distressing. I feel it needs a similar curtain backdrop. If you were to distress the nightstands to match or even paint them (distressing of course) to match whatever color you choose for shams or bed skirt or maybe a valance is another direction. I once had curtains which had a puffy design and they really do catch er . . rather attract dust. Give it more thought, but Iā€™m not a fan of the geometric. You always have an intuitive fabric appropriateness so go with your gut. Also love your lamps, is there a story? They look so nice next to the headboard carving. Are hydrangeas a flower you like? Just a hint of bluish lavender with agreeable gray . . . But this will be on the back burner until after the wedding but we all love to give opinions. LOL Have a great weekend all, take care.

  11. Sounds like a super fun day that Rebecca and you shared. That fabric store would be such a wonderful place to browse.
I have to say that I’m not a fan of the curtains. I’m definitely a romantic, flowery type of girl. The bedspread and curtain designs seem to compete with your headboard, IMO. I like blue and white, but have it in my sun room only. As Sally said, it is my room of endless summer .I do add additional colors throughout the year – even typical fall colors and red and green at Christmastime.

That car is funny. there’s a VW Bug in town that has wildflowers painted across both sides, but the best is the long eyelashes on the headlights.

Nice ribbons you found at the thrift store. Even the ducks might work as props for some of your smaller dolls.

Marilyn is absolutely right. Even though I’m fully vaccinated, I still wear two masks every time I go to the store and still avoid all other unnecessary trips just as I did before I could get the vaccine.

  12. Hi Jeanne,
I’m so glad you’re enjoying time with your daughter. What a neat fabric store! A dollar a pound wow! … How can you go wrong?! I love the rustic feel of the fabrics you bought. They blend perfectly with Rebecca’s bouquet wrapped in jute cording.
Lots of comments on the curtains LOL … when I saw your new curtains my first thought was dust collector and my second was will the curtains wash well? Having said that they are cute, and in the end it’s your decision. Your new bedspread so pretty. Because you seem to gravitate toward neutral colors I think the look and feel you want in your bedroom is relaxing and calm, certainly nothing wrong with that but a little color thrown in is fun too. It’ll all come together.
I wanted to thank you and all the sofa sisters for their prayers, kind words and positive thoughts. Long story short… Hyperplastic colorectal polyps, no cancer, Thank you Jesus! The doctor told me blood throws the test off and causes false positives.yikes, I’m still having pain. More tests

    Hugs
    Ingrid
