Freckles or NO freckles… on your American Girl dolls…

Happy May Day to everyone!

I was in my sewing room this evening and Nora (#55) was in the front row on my dolly shelf. I pulled her out and looked her over, straightened up her head just a bit as it was a little cockeyed. Then I surveyed her freckles. I’m not opposed to freckles and have had my fair share of them growing up, but for some reason, as much as I WANT to like Nora, I’ve never been a fan of her freckles. Nellie has them and they are fine with me, as she seems more little girlish to me, but Nora… well for some reason, I always pictured her as more grown up and more sophisticated. Don’t ask me why….

Anyway, I snapped a few pictures of her with my camera and looked at them full size on my computer. The next thing I knew I was using the retouch brush on my Picasa photo editing and removed one freckle from the picture… then another and then one more… until I had one whole side of them gone. I looked at her with squinted eyes trying to see if I thought I might like them removed… It’s just a picture, so I started removing the freckles on the other side of her nose… and continued until not a single freckle graced her face.

Then I studied her face again… she looked familiar… She looked like Eden…Could it be that I was just missing Eden?

Here’s one of my last pictures of Eden…

Here’s Nora (#55) with her freckles the way they are now…

…and here she is with the magic of Picasa photo help… all freckles removed…

Anyone have any thoughts? Just wondering… I could easily remove them with some remover I have… and she’d have a peaches and cream complexion! :o)

Regardless what everyone says, Nora is up next for a dress… the freckles staying or disappearing, MAY or MAY NOT determine what style dress she gets!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

You know, Jeanne, I looked and looked, back and forth, at the pictures, and I think what bothers Me about Nora’s freckles is that they seem kind of big for her face, at least some of them. Now I do know that some people have larger freckles than others (we have a nephew who is, as far as I know—he’s in his 30s now so I don ‘t think I’ll ask! LOL–absolutely covered from head to foot with freckles, and some of them are kind of big. I, on the other hand, have very fine little freckles in just a few areas.

I also think her freckles are in such a regular pattern, it doesn’t look natural, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I think I do like Nora better without the freckles, but she is Your doll, so you will have to make the ultimate decision! (And, yes, she does rather remind me of Eden!)

  2. Jeanne, another one here that prefers no freckles! The minute you mentioned something about taking away the freckles, I thought, well then, she would look just like Eden, or my Ruthie! I never did care for the AG freckles pattern, although some other dolls look adorable, and spunky with them.

I have seen #55 in the store and other pictures, and she seems to have much darker hair than what your picture shows. Is it the lighting?

No matter what you do, it is, after all, your doll!

  3. I agree with Charlotte, the freckles seem too large and regular. Of course a beauty mark is another thing! Like, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Amanda Blake. Happy May Day to all!

  4. I really know zilch about AG dolls other than owning some. Would it hurt her value by removing the freckles? Have no idea. I’ve never ordered a Meadow girl with added freckles, but many love them. I’ve seen some cute ones.
Kind of excited this morning. I heard from my distant cousin in St. Louis. We worked on the family tree together some years ago. I had actually been thinking about her too. She was gifted a stack of photos from her nephew. Turns out a bunch were of my family. Surprise. She’s going to mail them to me. 🙂 Can’t wait to see them.
I’m going to try another sew along next week for a Meadow Mae size outfit. New girl will need something to wear. 🙂

How wonderful about those photos, Joy!! My mother’s cousin Marilyn used to come across pictures from time to time that my mother had sent her many years ago, and she would then send them off to me (or, I suppose, my brother, if some were of him). What treasures! One was of my dad holding me–must have been the day he baptized me, as he was still wearing his clerical collar, and I had on the baptismal gown my grandma made (which I still have). My folks have both been gone for a number of years now, and Marilyn died a couple of years ago, too, so those photos and her notes are all the more precious!

    Good Morning Jeanne,
I love freckles! It’s one of the reasons I liked Kit. I might be freckle bias… my mother is covered with them, something I love about her. I think your sans freckles Nora does indeed look like Eden. I wondered the same thing Joy mentioned …would it hurt her value?? If not or if you don’t really care, go for it! You can always add them back. She’s a pretty girl either way.
Happy Friday and Happy May Day!
    Hugs

Nora is so much more pretty without the freckles. I am not a big lover of freckles, especially when they turn into large aging spots from too much time in the sun. Not sure about that statement. Are age spots freckles?

  7. I like freckles on certain dolls only. I love them on Kit because she was the first to have them and they make her look sweet and and I like them on Nellie. My re-wigged Nellie still has hers and they make her unique to my doll collection. She my only Josefina mold and only freckled one. Nora’s freckles are even and perfect. I know Nellie’s aren’t and I don’t believe Kit’s are either, then AG got into a perfect pattern. Some of the newer and CYO dolls have super dark freckles that don’t go so well with certain eye/ hair color combinations.
Hmmm. a beauty mark like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, or Amanda Blake? I have though about, if I ever get another doll, a beauty mark is one thing I would add to her. Nora does look a little like Eden, but seems to have lighter hair. I thought the only difference (besides the freckles) was hair length and brown eyes instead of Eden’s dark green.
Can’t wait to see if you keep them or not and what lovely ensemble Nora’s get to wear.
    Happy May Day, friends!!

  8. Happy May Day everyone. Can’t believe we’re headed into May!
I actually like Nora either way. Someone said they thought her hair was lighter than Eden’s and that’s what I think.
I’m no help, although I will alter a doll if I have a certain look in mind.
I’m wondering what era or style you’ll decide on for Nora?

  9. Hummm…she is a sweetheart either way but those particular freckles seem kind of big…more like brown spots. ( so do you think your remover would help my brown spots? Ha Ha)
Its amazing how much she does look like Eden without the freckles.
Will be fun to see what kind of dress she gets to model
    Have a great weekend!

Dear Jeanne, I don’t think that Eden looks like Nora. I think Eden is more striking.

Happy May Day. I was dancing around my office just now. I am guessing that you are dancing around the kitchen.

I look forward to the time when we are all Dancing In The Street. Do you remember that old song by Martha And The Vandellas? I used to play it on the juke box in a local diner. Let’s hope that when May comes to an end, we can all walk outside of our doors and do just that.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
I always thought Eden was more striking as well, but Rebecca convinced Jeanne to sell her. 🙁
I thought the only difference was hair length and eye color as I wrote above , but I just looked at other photos of the two dolls and Eden has a prettier complexion IMO. Obviously, everyone has different opinions on what constitutes a striking doll.
Yep, I know that song, but a later cover version of it.

  11. I like her without the freckles… Jmo..and I love freckles usually
But I for some reason don’t like her freckles…I agree with Charlotte T.

  12. Hmm, I bounced back and forth between both pictures, and I don’t believe I have a preference between the two. I actually like her either way. I think she is prettier than Eden though. She has a nicer face mold and a nicer coloring, at least to me.

  13. I think these freckles are a bit too big. A Sprinkling they are not. I have Nellie and her freckles seem more realistic.
