Today’s renovation project: Vinyl Plank Flooring

Well, we did it!! The floor is all finished except for the piece where you walk in the door to Rebecca’s room. I’ll have to make a template for this last piece because it has all these little layers of the door facing.

I predicted (and hoped) we could get this flooring put down in 5 hours…and we sort of did…if you don’t count the hour and a half it took us to figure out which was the “least” crooked wall to begin laying planks next to. It was a bit frustrating to see how “curvy” the paneling was where the floor met the paneled walls.

The flooring we used in Rebecca’s room is the same as what we put down in our living room, dining room and kitchen. It isn’t glued down, but sort of put in the room like a puzzle, butting the pieces together and gravity holds them in place. They are about 4-5 pounds each and you get quite a work out handling them.

You can see the full post on that project by clicking…Perfect Flooring for Imperfect Floors! It really is the best thing out there for unlevel and crooked floors.

This was the view of the west wall. We thought we were going to start with this wall and work our way toward the doorway, but we used an 8′ steel 2 x 4 and you can see how much it was pulling away from the wall. My hubby decided after lots of trying to shim out the walls at the bottom and fit the flooring in under the paneling, that it just wasn’t going to work.

We discovered the east wall was the best place to start. The cold air return was slightly in row one and mostly in row 2, so once we got past it and onto the 3nd row, things began moving along at a little faster pace…

The tools it took to do the flooring were considerably less than all the paint cans and brushes and rollers and paint trays, etc…

My hubby bought these vintage cutters one time at an antique shop and has used them on all of our flooring projects… They are very heavy but he is strong enough to cut a pretty straight edge with them. He did the cutting and I did all the laying and tapping in place.

We finally made it to the last row over by that crooked wall. Each piece had to be cut specifically to fit the wall…

Once we had the flooring mostly laid down, except for a few narrow pieces in her closet and that one by the door, we decided to run to Lowe’s and pick up the baseboard trim. We decided to measure each piece and cut it before I painted it. When we tried to fit it in the corners, we realized the corners had narrow pieces of trim in them that we had to cut out so our baseboard trim would fit. Just another one of those things that ate up our time…

After the trim was cut we laid it out so we could see what the room was going to look like… here’s a little preview…

Anyone notice the sun isn’t shining any more… My 5 hours has now turned into 10…

This is the last piece I still have to measure and custom fit…it’s the piece that goes out her door.

I have my trim painted and it’s drying and we’ll put it up tomorrow.

This is a picture of the vinyl plank flooring we used… on the front and the back. (Sometimes it’s called Loose Lay flooring.) Anyway, the top of the flooring has a slight texture and the back of the planks have a grippy kind of surface that grabs what it’s laid down on.

It must have been just a bit rough on my hands because it’s almost like they are blistered… They kind of feel like chapped fingers instead of chapped lips… a bit stingy! ouch!

Maybe they’ll be all well tomorrow… I hope so!

Well, that was flooring day… hope you enjoyed it…. and do read the post about when we did our living room. I give lots of information in there that I didn’t in today’s post.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, my goodness, Jeanne, that room is going to be Gorgeous when it’s all done!! But, what challenges you’ve faced along the way, with wonky walls and all. I just can’t imagine hand trimming each and every piece for that last “row” so it will fit along the crooked wall!

Laura, thanks for posting the additional pictures of your church. The windows are so beautiful. Also, I was pretty sure I was hearing a pipe organ when I listened to/watched the Easter service, and I was right! One of the churches my dad served bought an old pipe organ and refurbished it and all the pipes, and then it was installed under the supervision of and tuned by Dr. Charles Wassburg, who was a friend of our family and somewhat of an expert on pipe organs. So, I have a real affinity for that particular instrument!

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
It’s really turning out nicely… Rebecca hated that she had to go back to work today… I think she wanted to “play” in her room putting her stuff semi-back in there.
I LOVE to hear pipe organs too! I think my first time hearing one was in the movie “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” with Don Knotts… Love that sound!
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Wow, Jeanne, just think of the resale value of your house when you decide to move!!! Ha! I know , just kidding, but boy, what a difference in the room now! Of course, when the furniture is finally moved in, a lot of the floor will be covered but still, it is really so nice to see it now. You might say this is the floors turn to shine!

Funny thing, but as the pictures go down, the floor turns from gray to brown, the walls go from gray to beige, then back again.

Oh, I see that Rebecca has a light in her closet? I wish mine had one, but mine isn’t quite that deep, but lucky girl!

Your poor hands! They look kind of swollen, and I’m sure there is a good reason for that! Better take care and get those beautiful hands ready to sew again!

    1. Hi Linda,
I told me hubby that very thing yesterday… about the value of our house going up… He said, “We’re never going to be able to sell this house for what we’ve put into it!” I know, but it was fun to think we had improved it just a little bit more.
Rebecca is wanting to find a rug for in there too, so even less of the floor will be showing, but someday it will be our guest room and I can do it like I want. :o)
For now, I’m happy for Rebecca to have a new and updated room…
The colors in the room do change depending on where I stand and take pictures…

My hands and fingertips were swollen and today they are better, but the very tips are sore.
Yes, I have to remember I need to get back to sewing one of these days…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Oh, you made my day! So glad you went with the flooring from the other part of the house because it looks so nice. And now Rebecca’s room does too. I have to agree with you on cutting the planks to fit the wall. Not fun. I can still remember laying the tiles in the playhouse against the wavy paneled walls. I know there is a trick to cutting flush to the wall and transferring the pattern to the new flooring to get an exact fit, but I’m sure you did that. I’ve forgotten how that works. Anyway, I’m sure Rebecca is anxious to move back in. Great reno job. Well done. 🙂 Hope your hands are better today.
Off to Trader Joe’s senior hour to wait in line.

    1. HI Joy,
I’m glad we went with the same color in Rebecca’s room as in the living room. I think it will look good when we get it down the hall too and hopefully in our bedroom. Can’t have enough of that Ashwood color. :o)
Yes, it’s called scribing when you match the crooked walls to your flooring. It’s just basically transferring the differences from the wall to the floor.
Rebecca is really excited to move back in… too bad she had to go back to work today… but she’s off on Thursday… and was hoping she might get off early tomorrow night.
I hope you didn’t have to wait in line too long at TJ’s.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. wow, things are looking great. I’m sure Rebecca is thrilled to have a more grown-up looking room. The flooring goes so nicely with the walls. I hope your hands feel better today, I would have been wearing gloves. I’m sure you wish so also now. Yes, have to protect your hands, lots of pretty sewing coming up… time for May Day dresses. I know I saw Molly’s set didn’t sell, but give her a basket of flowers and you have a May Day outfit or a Mother’s Day garden party dress. Problem fixed!.

    1. Hi Laura,
You said it right when you mentioned a grown-up room. Before in that apple green color, it seemed like more of a kiddie room… now it’s so pretty and almost elegant. I’m sure she’ll be thrilled to get everything in it’s place and all organized!
I don’t remember my fingers hurting like this before when we did the living room… maybe they did and I just don’t remember. I would have been taking gloves on and off every time I had to mark for a piece to be cut, but I guess I should have worn some.

I’m trying to decide what to do about Molly’s dress… I think it was Joy who said to cut the coat off and put it with something more casual… I have a Kit doll that I’m wanting to sell… Maybe I’ll just add this dress to that listing and include the dress with the doll. Just a thought.
I’ll have to look at it again and see what I think about your ideas…
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. It is amazing how much that vinyl looks like wood! The grain design and the color variation blends so well. The white trim really sets it off too! Everything is coming together nicely. Can’t wait to see it all furnished
I’m tired of making masks but did get the quilt I’m making for my grandson’s graduation all cut out and plotted and colors decided on. Hummm did I mention he graduated last spring?☺️☺️
It’s too cold this week to work outside…glad we did yard work last week.
    Have fun finishing up!

    1. Hi Kathie,
We really like this flooring and it really is perfect for our plywood floors. The last of the carpeting was picked up by our garbage man today… Not a bit of carpeting in our house anymore, except some rugs… I like it! :o)
I love the white trim next to the pretty gray walls. Of course, I’m a really big fan of white trim no matter what paint color it’s next to.
So you’re a few months behind on getting your grandson’s quilt done… I’m always behind, it seems. He won’t mind! I’m sure of it!
Have fun sewing and stay warm…it’s been very chilly here too, and a chance of freezing temps tonight.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Rebecca’s room is really looking nice. Refreshing and crisp. All of you work so well together and that’s a blessing. Besides the know how too!!

The floor looks just wonderful. The colors all blend together so nicely. How pleased you all must feel.
Can’t wait to see the finished project!!

    1. HI Paula,
Thanks for your sweet compliments on the room. As much as we love it and think it looks pretty, we are pretty pooped out. I’m not sure my hubby is up to any more big projects anymore. I’d love to get the flooring put down in our sitting room and that might be the end of big things for him. We DO have 4 windows in the dining room that need to be replaced. I better wait a while before I even mention those! :o)

We are finishing up the baseboard, putting on the door, hanging the blinds, finishing up that last piece of flooring by the door, putting down the threshold, and a few more things. It won’t be long till be totally done! Yay!
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. The room looks spectacular! Rebecca must be so pleased. Will we get to see a photo with all the furniture in it?

    1. HI Julia,
Thank you so much! Rebecca is really happy and can’t wait to get back in her room. Me either… her stuff in EVERYWHERE! :o)
I sure hope to get a picture with all her furniture in there… and then when she adds her touch to it.
      Thanks,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. You guys did a great job. You are going to give the fixer-upper guys on tv a run for their show…
I hope we get to see it with her furniture all moved back in.

    1. HI Judi Kaye,
Rebecca had to go back to work today and isn’t off again until Thursday, but I’m hoping when she gets home in the evenings, she can move a little bit of her things in there each day. I will definitely show it with her stuff in there… I hope she won’t mind…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Can’t wait to see it either! It will take a little while for things to find their rightful place in a new environment but they will! I know you’re tired ( but that will fade away quickly) but when all that freshness starts coming together it can be very inspirational😉 everything looks so good!

    1. Hi Cindy,
I cant wait to show you all the details we did!! Or maybe we shouldn’t….🤪
I’m hoping the inspiration from the room rolls over in inspiring me to finish my kitchen cabinets!!
      Love you Cindy…
      Jeanne

  10. Your hands almost look like it might be an allergic reaction. Slowly, slowly on the next project. Beautiful job. Whew,

    1. Hi Susette,
I think my fingers just took a beating this time. The planks just caused too much friction on my fingertips I think. They are very sore, but I think in a few days they’ll be back to normal…
Just a few more details in the room and it will be Rebecca’s to decorate as she wants…someday it will be our guest room…
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne
