I’m back just for today…

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to touch base with you today…I’ve read your comments over the last few days and it’s wonderful to see you all interacting with each other. You are the greatest!!

My mom is having a rough time right now and we still need to take care of some things. Cindy and Deb haven’t gone home yet and it’s better with all of us making decisions together.

I will be back when I can…miss you all…

Maybe a few of you can think of a question and you can all chime in… :o)

Blessings, Jeanne

Jeanne, we totally understand. I’m sure each of us has had those times when our family issues consumed a huge part of our time, and other things had to take the back burner, so to speak.

As for us, first an update on my husband. He went to the pacemaker clinic on Tues., and his pacemaker is working just fine, the leads are still properly imbedded, etc. However, there was some redness around the wound, so the doctor came and looked at it, and decided to prescribe an antibiotic, and wants to see him again next week. We’ve been carefully watching (and even taking pictures!) the site, and the redness does seem to be receding, for which we’re thankful. However, it does seem that he has developed an allergy to adhesive (as I have had for years), as many of the areas where he had those sticky squares for the cardiac monitors have become reddened and some even look like he’s got abrasions there! Something else to worry about!

Today he drove for the first time–just about a 4 mile round trip, but I think it made him feel good that he was able to do that much. As for me, I finally have stopped feeling so overwhelmingly exhausted after being up for only a few hours, so I think the after-effects of stress are finally leaving.

Thanks again for the many prayers on our behalf.

I finally got my swap gifts opened and photographed, but am having trouble posting them to the ning site. As soon as I do that, I will send some to you, also, so you can share them at some time in the future.

I saw someone yesterday asked about “the doll that got away”. I guess for me it would be the Betsy McCall 8″ doll that came out back in the late 50s, when I was approaching (or maybe already in) my teens. Mom said I was too old for a doll (HA!), so I didn’t get her. However, many years later, I did get one at a doll show–missing one lower leg but her hair is is beautiful shape and she came in a lovely long formal! So, it doesn’t really matter to me that part of her leg is missing, as no one ever sees it, anyway.

    I’ll ask a question:

Do you prefer to focus your doll collecting in some way (a certain kind, size, subject [I know one lady named Alice who collects Alice in Wonderland dolls, for instance], etc. or do you collect whatever takes your fancy at a particular time? And, related to that, do you collect other things related to your collection (licensed products, furniture, etc.)?

I am one who collects what I like, and my tastes are wide and varied!! Some things that I did collect, I no longer do, for one reason or another (Barbie, for instance–still have my first one from 1960, and a couple of others but that’s it). I have long loved Cabbage Patch Kids, but really prefer the all-fabric “originals” to the vinyl “toys”, although I have both. I have quite a lot of licensed products, too (tape player, record player, games, tea sets, etc.) Really, I do need to go thru and “purge” as it has taken over my basement! I am not as active with CPK collecting (the originals are mostly 22″ or so, so they take up a lot of room!), but still love the ones I have. Now I’m more into vinyl dolls, and am preferring the smaller ones these days (you can fit more into the same space! LOL) My smallest doll is my 5-1/2″ Hitty (wooden, by the Robert Raikes company) and my largest is the 25″ CPK “Booboo boy” who I had made to look like our son when he was little.

    Anyone else?

    1. My doll collection is quite varied, also. 🙂 the majority of them, tho are 14″ and under… with relatively ‘fewer’ in the 14″ range. I started collecting with my childhood dolls – added vintage cloth dolls…then discovered Bleuette… she has ‘led me by the nose’ since around 2006 and can claim being the Queen of my collection. 😉 Hitty takes second place in a ‘big way’ for such a small doll. My motto is : If they are small – I can fit more in. 🙂 (Sending hugs and good thoughts to you and your family, Jeanne!)

  2. So glad for the update even though not the best news and good to hear that your sisters are still there. Know all together the decisions will be the best for your mom.
Kind of all over the place with dolls around here. At the moment I really like the Meadow kids and Ruby Red Fashion Friends. Of course, I have a group of LD’s as well as some Maru and Friends. I do like the A Girl For All Times dolls as well. I also have the 10″ Tonner Ann Estelle group and some Sylvia Natterer dolls as well as the Betsy McCall Tonners and Amelia Thimble and a couple of friends. I have one OB11 who is cute, but pretty small for me. There are also some Kish smaller girls living here too. I have most of my childhood dolls including Ginny, Ginnette, and Jill, and Muffie, Betsy McCall, and Tiny Tears. I’m sure I have skipped someone. Hope they will forgive me.
    Thanks again for the update.

  3. Good morning, everyone! Finally am caught up on rest and my company is now gone. Oh my, how taxing it is to keep up with kids! But we had fun, so that is always a bonus!

About dolls and what I collect, well, my collection of dolls is at a standstill, because I don’t have the room, and am not willing to make my house look like a toy shop! I started with Molly and started collecting for her to mostly recreate my childhood. I have reached a point where I don’t need a lot of things, but the clothes are now taking precedence over dolls, and accessories. I do have a varied collection now of AG dolls, and they are really all I am interested in, but do have little MA storybook dolls too. I have enough AG dolls to take up plenty of my time, 9 of them, plus my little Betsy McCall. I like to have all my dolls out, not stored away, and like to dress them, so it gets very time consuming. I’m very careful of what comes into my house now, since nothing ever goes out!😊

Just take your time, Jeanne, we all understand. We wish you well in making the best decisions for your mother. This is something that you, and only you and your family can do .

Glad to hear that Ron is doing well, Charlotte.

  4. Thanks for update Jeanne. It can be so difficult dealing with aging parents. I think many of us have gone through it, and it is both emotionally and physically exhausting. Hang in there! I’m glad you have your sisters’ help.

As for doll collecting, I pretty much just buy what I like, but right now I’m trying not to add more as I really have enough. I really love the Patti Playpal dolls, but they take up so much room! I wish I had more time to enjoy them, but work is time consuming too.

Charlotte, I’m happy to hear your husband is doing well. It’s great that he was able to drive.

  5. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Charlotte, hello. I was the one who asked about the “doll who got away.” I found her though so, yeaaa!

Now to answer your question. I don’t know the answer (laugh). I started out collecting little Alexanders because I had two when I was a child.

Then Dotti (in my local doll club) got me hooked on Iplehouse ball jointed dolls (bjds). Next she got me hooked on Little Darlings and Bonekas. Dotti is very dangerous (laugh). She is not “allowed” to show me any more of her dolls.

Somehow a flock (throng? gaggle?) of 18 inch dolls made its way to my house. Well, I couldn’t turn the dolls away and they just moved in.

I am hoping not to fall in love with any more dolls as I will need a larger house if I do (chuckle).

  6. Dear Jeanne, I completely understand that you need to focus on taking care of your mom’s needs now. Glad that your sisters are there to help make critical decisions.

    Hi Charlotte,
So happy to hear your husband is doing well and hopefully the antibiotic will clear things up. To answer your question my “doll collection” beyond my one special childhood doll I still have consists of five PC/AG dolls and the parts of theirs or others collections I like. I have PC Samantha, PC Felicity, renamed Nellie re-wigged with #33 wig, renamed Caroline, and renamed Marie-Grace. I don’t collect furniture. I have Samantha’s PC desk I inherited from my daughter’s castoffs and a homemade table. I have everything I love of clothing and accessories from Felicity’s and Samantha’s Pleasant Company and early AG collections (1997 for Felicity and 2006 for Samantha ends it for me). I then have whatever clothing and accessories I liked from Caroline, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Nellie, Rebecca, and Kit. It may be a number of items or just one., whatever fits will my chosen time periods. My dolls “live” in the Colonial, pioneer, Civil War, Edwardian, and Great Depression eras. Felicity, Samantha, Caroline and Marie-Grace “live” in a particular era, while my renamed Nellie is a time traveler, Joining Samantha in Edwardian, Caroline and Marie-Grace in Civil War, or standing alone in pioneer or 1930’s Great Depression. I also like the Regency era, and although I don’t have anything currently for that, I would use one of my current dolls in the role also. Right now my collecting is at a standstill as well. All my preferred eras are gone and nothing AG currently makes interests me. I do occasionally find a small trinket at the antique store or craft store that fits and I have a number of sewing/ DIY craft ideas I hope to find time for someday.

  7. Hello!
Doesn’t 2020 just sound like a good year? Sure hope it will be.😉
Gosh Charlotte you have had quite the time. Poor hubby gave you a scare. That pacemaker should help him feel better. It’s nice when the partner can take back some of their former duties. That is the way it is around here…if at least one of us is good then we can function☺️
I have had problems posting on the Ning site for Little Darlings too. I think some pics worked on just the photo area. That Ning site gives me a headache. We can’t be the only ones because I only saw one lady that was able to post.
About collecting ….we formed a UFDC Doll Club in Omaha in the last year. It is the”Can’t Stop Collecting Doll Club” so we do have a sense of humor. My dolls are just about everything. . Several sets of Dionne Compositions that I love. A few antique bisque. Many newer vinyl like the Little Darlings. Helen Krish made Riley and fell in love with her….especially when Pam Johnson was making clothes for her that were similar to Jeanne’s in quality. I have the Krish 4 Seasons and when I met Helen at this years UFDC Convention she told me that she felt like they were not done as well because another doll company made them but they are still a favorite of mine. The latest ones are the Reina Paola Asian doll and the new Bella. They have such sweet faces.
Hope all of you have a great New Year.
Jeanne, I’m so glad you can share duties and decisions with your sisters. Prayers for all of you!

    1. The Ning site drives me crazy too! I simply can’t figure it out. I guess there are too many places to post (topics) instead of just one main spot and the photos are very confusing to me. I was trying to see what people received for their swaps even though I did not participate and there were very few photos. And I may have not found the right place to look. Maybe there should be just one area for all of the photos? Funny, but I did see a couple of pictures and posts for the swap on one of the other LD facebook sites. Why post there? My friend asked the question as she was in the swap and her partner posted there. She isn’t a member so couldn’t even view it or the comments. I will view posts when I receive an email, but it is too hard to search or follow for me. 🙂

      1. Totally agree. I got as far as I could with the verbiage but then the pictures wouldn’t load. After 3x and only One swapper able to post I figured it couldn’t just be meThey need the option to pull photos from the “ photo library” like most sites use.

        1. Charlotte Trayer

Joy and Kathy, to see any photos from the swap, you need to go to the swap “page” (where they announced we were going to have one), then click on either the “limited” or the “unlimited”, and from there go to “forums” (directly above the body of the page, you can choose “forum”, “photos”, etc.

That said, I understand that ning was working on the site this week, and that’s why we were having trouble posting pictures. I tried for two hours last night, and could only get one picture to post, so I gave up. Elizabeth emailed me (after I emailed Dorothy), and said about the ning site having had some updating, and she said she would send in a complaint about the trouble we were fixing. I will probably try to post pictures again tomorrow night; I do have my story all ready on Word, so I just have to copy and paste the parts between the pictures. Hope that helps.

          1. Thanks for the update Charlotte. I did follow all those steps…but maybe after another fix it will let us load our pics and story😉

  8. Don’t worry about us Jeanne. We will keep each other entertained while you must focus elsewhere. So glad you’re sisters are able to be there with you.

I was a bit occupied yesterday (trying to get my sewing room in condition to return to sewing) and I missed the question about the doll that got away. Since I really wasn’t into dolls much as a child and do not now have even what I did have, my one that got away is one I want today. I have a huge desire to own a Dianna Effner Isabelle. But every time I get on Dianna’s site they are not taking orders.

As for my doll collection, I only have one 18″ doll and the rest are 14.5″ or under. They take up less room and are the most fun to sew for I think. My dolls are all modern girls.

Don’t know if anyone will read this. I wrote it this morning and then got sidetracked. Just noticed I hadn’t sent it when I was shutting down for the day.

So glad Charlotte’s hubby is doing well.

    1. Charlotte Trayer

I read it, Barbara! I usually go back at night and skim over the replies during the day. Since I’m a night owl, I’m usually one of the first to see Jeanne’s blog entries and comment. It’s fun to go back and see what others wrote, too!

  9. I guess we could start a new question today! What was your favorite childhood doll, and why? Maybe you still have her?

Mine, well, I am not sure this will even count, but I had a little doll, named Susie, that I cannot for the life of me remember what she even looked like, although I do remember that she was a baby doll. Not even sure if a rag doll or vinyl! But she was my “comfort friend” you might say, and I took her to bed with me all the time, at night or naptime. One day she was nowhere! My mother explained that she threw her out because she was falling apart! I never noticed the “falling apart” part, just that I missed Susie, and to this day am really sad about her demise. Although I loved all my dolls, she remains the closest to me in my memories, although I can’t even remember what she looked like! LOL

  10. Jeanne
Keeping you, your family and especially your Mother in my thoughts. Do worry about us we’ll all be here when you come back. You have more important things to deal with right now in addition to your injury. Take some time for yourself which we often forget is needed as you won’t be able to concentrate on your Mother’s situation. Blessings.

My favorite childhood doll is Betsy Wetsy and I am lucky to still have her in collection. Her hair is a tad matted but I think over the winter I will work on that. I also loved my Patty Playpal which I have with all her clothing that my aunts sewed. I have all her clothes and a small wardrobe that I made when I was around 9. I think it’s sad that most girls grow out of playing with baby dolls at such a young age now. They seem to go right to those fashion dolls which risque clothing.

    1. Oh, Betsy Wetsy, Sandra! I had one too, and was forever giving her a bottle and she had water coming out of her neck arms and legs, just every crack and crevice there was! Too much water, and I got in trouble with that! But it was fun! LOL

I never cared for adult dolls, still don’t! Barbie——-never!

      1. Linda
Same here. I never owned a Barbie. I do have two fashion dolls from the ’60’s and I love them. They are small though and I think maybe 12″. One is mine and my sister gave me hers because she boys and no girl to pass them onto.

  11. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Linda, what a great question! Hmmm, my favorite childhood doll. I had a doll also whom I cannot remember. She was some kind of a fashion doll, like a Miss Revlon, but a dime store version. I cannot remember her face and I don’t know what happened to her.

I guess I would have to choose my two little Madame Alexander dolls. I think I named them Susie and Johnny. They are long since gone.

I still have my Chatty Cathie and my Kissy and my Barbie.

  12. I’ll have to come back to answer Linda’s question, hopefully still today.

Dear Charlotte, I hope you see this. I saw your comment on having a Hitty doll, but didn’t have time to post about her until now. I though you and perhaps others might enjoy a blog I follow. Thsi lady is related to Tasha Tudor and enjoys old-fashioned things. She has dolls as well, just very old-fashioned or antique ones. Her’s the website as well as a couple of posts featuring her Hitty doll.

    1. Charlotte Trayer

Yes, I did see it, Laura, and thank you! What fun to see pictures of other Hitty dolls, etc.! She has posed them so nicely, and I enjoyed reading the stories. Thank you!

  13. Ok, I’m back to answer Linda’s question. So sorry to hear that your beloved Susie. Some of my mom’s dolls disappeared, too, but now that she looks back they were the dolls she had when she got scarlet fever. I assume it was still the practice to get rid of things that could harbor the bacteria just like in “:The Velveteen Rabbit”. Her Gretel doll who I have researched and believe was a Horseman doll along with others are gone. She still has her soldier doll, a rag doll stuffed with sawdust ( she was born in 1942) as well as a few of her German made ones and her Paris walking doll. I played with those as a child
I, on the other hand, only have my Madame Alexander baby doll. a MA Pussycat doll from my great uncle, and my Heidi Annaliese , a Kathe Kruse doll my great aunt brought back to me from a visit to our relatives in Germany. She is about 22 inches tall. My others that were at my grandparents were sadly auctioned off when my grandfather died by his second wife (he had remarried very late in life being lost and vulnerable after my grandmother died) before I could retrieve them or my mom and I could retrieve many of her childhood keepsakes, Christmas and household things etc. I get sad and nostalgic about that come Christmastime each year. We did get some precious items, just not everything I remember or shows in photos.
I’m unsure the exact model of my Madame Alexander baby doll, maybe someone would know.
She’s 12 inches long with vinyl head and limbs and a cloth body. She has brown, molded hair and blue sleep eyes. Her legs are curved in like a baby’s and her one hand is a fist while the other is open.I got her at probably 9 months in 1968, as she is in many, many photos. She’s not a Little Huggums because she has vinyl limbs.

    1. Your comment about having to get rid of toys after a child had a serious illness reminded me of the fact that my step-grandmother died of TB when I was a toddler. She used to feed me off her spoon. When she found out she had TB she was devastated that I might get it also. I’m 73 now and so far so good. But they had to destroy all my stuffed animals so while a lot of children keep some of their stuffed animals, especially a very favorite one (my hubby has the teddy bear he got for Christmas the year he was adopted when he was four), I have nothing from that time in my life.

      1. Thanks for calling it sharing. I get very nostalgic at Christmas time. Aww, so sorry to hear about your losing things as well, Barbara. I know they’re just things, but things have so many memories attached to them, don’t they? As far as TB is concerned I think you’re home free.
B is contagious and can be spread to others by airborne droplets during sneezing, coughing, and contact with sputum, so you can get the disease by close contact with infected people; outbreaks occur in crowded conditions. The incubation period may vary from about two to 12 weeks. So if you’ve had two negative tests, you’re fine. Your step-grandmother sounds like a very loving person.
How sweet that your hubby has his teddy bear. What a special gift that would have been.

  14. Sorry I just realized I went on a venting. Didn’t meant to do that. I am very grateful we have my grandmother’s dishes, my grandparent’s manger set, Christmas ornaments and other holiday decor ( the German wooden pyramid, and other figures. her depression glass cookie jar etc.

    1. Laura,
Vent away… feels good and we don’t mind. I’m sorry your childhood things were lost.
When my parents immigrated from The Netherlands 42 years ago many of our things were left behind. After a few years here in the states they again packed up and moved us back to the Netherlands, leaving almost everything at my aunts house this time (she had immigrated to the US a few years earlier). Within a few months my mother wanted to move back. So we moved back to the States this time for good. To this day my aunt still has many of my parents things they left with her… I love collecting things but they really are just things. One day all my junk will be sold or given away. Both my kids are “throw-awayers” lol Such is life
      Enjoy your weekend!
      Ingrid

      1. Hi Ingrid, Thanks. So sad that things have to get left behind. When my grandfather immigrated from Germany in 1927 he couldn’t bring many things with him. His eldest sister was already here and his parents and younger brother and older sister would come later. The second sister would return to marry and stay in Germany. One prized possession he brought was his violin which we gratefully have. My daughter played it for 16 years and still does occasionally.
That’s sad that your children are throw awayers. Sure, things are just things, but for the memories attached to them. My daughter likes old things although her tastes and mine are quite different.

  15. Hi Jeanne.
I’m thinking of you and keeping you and your Mama in prayer. Take care of yourself and enjoy your time with family.
To answer the last 2 questions asked… the doll that got away was a tiny Heartstring doll painted by Dianna Effner herself. I watched her for weeks, she went up and down in price finally she was a “make an offer price” I sent the owner a message asking a few questions. Is the wig removeable, any marks on the doll, Was she signed ect.. She wrote back answering my questions and interestingly that the heartstring was purchased by a relative for $1200.00 from Dianna. I thought oh my wow! A bit pricey… so I told myself no… Days later little heartstring was up for bids for $600.00. I bid on her telling myself I wasn’t allowed to spend more than $700.00… The day the auction ended I was out with hubby and completely forgot, she sold for $620.00 … I’m still kicking myself!
I did buy a heartstring recently. She’s adorable but she’s not custom by the artist herself. I still love her though.
My bear and doll collections are my secret guilty pleasure! Which doll is my favorite? I really love my LD’s, their faces are so beautiful and each one is totally a work of art! Dressing and posing BJD is truly so much fun. It’s impossible to pick a favorite between my girls.
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. I think after Dianna did the original sculpt for Jo Flitton the Heartstring dolls were produced in large numbers and not painted individually like the Little Darlings. The Heartstring dolls are charming and I hope Jo can sell her Jos Doll Shoppe so they will be produced again. She has not ordered any for quite awhile now. I have three of them, Sugar and Spice Jackie, Simply Grace and Simply Eva and would love to have more. I buy all their clothes from Jo. If you check Jo’s website, she does have a few of her limited edition dolls for $500.

      1. Hi Barbara,
Yes you are correct about the Heartstring dolls being factory painted. The one I wanted was a custom heartstring doll. Sigh… I can’t believe she slipped through my fingers. She was gorgeous, Thank you so much for the heartstring information. Last I heard Jo didn’t have any more dolls left to sell and she was looking to sell her business. I went ahead and ordered a dress as my new to me Jackie arrived here naked. Thanks ever so much.
        Hugs
        Ingrid

  16. Oh wow, kind of late checking in here. Didn’t think anyone would be talking. I was wrong. 🙂 I guess my favorite childhood doll would depend on my age. Before five, definitely my Betsy Wetsey/Tiny Tears and then after five my Ginny’s and the others in the 8″ group. I still have them and the furniture I used, but am missing the doll house. It was rather unusual as it was for the larger girls, Jill and Jan and the Ginny’s. Made of redwood and a typical 50’s house with a roof that lifted off. I’ve searched for years, but have never found a replacement. I’m sure my mother donated it somewhere, but fortunately, I was able to hang on to the two wardrobes made by my grandfather and all of the clothes many made by my grandmother way back in the 1950’s. 🙂

    1. Hi Joy,
Your dollhouse sounds neat, being for larger dolls. I do have the dollhouse my grandfather made for my mom’s 4th birthday in September 1945. Being the war years he had to use whatever scrap he could come by, but he was very handy. It had a front panel that slides in and the roof comes off in two pieces to keep it dust free. My mom is glad that she has it along with he Renwal furniture and the couple of people. My grandmother sewed tiny curtains of dotted swiss for it and crocheted area and throw rugs ( I even have the leftover spools of the crochet thread that was used. She made doilies, dresser scarves antimacassars, and trims as well as sewed and embroidered. She was always doing something like that when the housework and gardening were finished. She taught me to crochet when I was probably eight and I still prefer working with crochet thread over yarn. I also have the clothing she sewed for my special doll and thing she made my mom’s dolls. A number are made of feedsack and so sweet. My grandfather made a little three drawer chest also, but sadly I don’t have that.

      1. I would love to see a photo of the doll house made by your grandfather. I’m sure it is wonderful. My grandfather made me a cat house. If you can believe that. I had a cat named Flicker who lived in it. It was two stories with a tilt off hinged shingled roof so you could see into the second floor. It also had a small glass window upstairs with a little turn knob so you could peek in to see if kitty was sleeping. The downstairs front also opened up so one could change the bedding, but in the front was also an arched open door and inside was a ramp that went up to the second floor. Flicker rarely slept downstairs and usually went up the ramp to the second floor. The house was painted a beautiful shade of blue, my favorite color, with white trim. I don’t think there are any photos of it, but the cat and I loved it. 🙂

        1. I too, would love to see the dollhouse your grandfather made for your mother, Laura! Since she andI are the same age, we would have been playmates, for sure! I received a beautiful itinerary Dollhouse when I was 6, in 1948, full of Renewal furniture and people, but of course, my mother threw it out when I no longer played with it. I always remembered that Dollhouse, and maybe 6 or 7 years ago, found one on EBay just like mine! I filled it with Renwal furniture that I bought off EBay, and it sits proudly on top of my dryer in my laundry room, really the only place I have for it.

Of course, I see it all the time, and occasionally “play “ with it, and move the furniture around. It sure makes me happy!

          1. Oh, you have the Renewal furniture? or have refound it? That is my dream. I had all of my metal dollhouse furniture in a box and eventually, pulled out the sewing machine and a couple of the tiny dollies to display. But, that is the last I ever saw of my furniture. I believe that my mother gave it away without asking me. A lot of my neat things managed to disappear like that. Every time I see a piece on ebay, I pine for it. I have managed to recapture my old metal dollhouse, but it has no furniture. Sad.

        2. I’m with Linda and joy,
I’d also enjoy seeing photos of the doll house your grandfather made. I’m sure it holds lots of treasured memories. I’m a bit jealous I always wanted one as a child but never did get one.

          1. I would love to share pictures and will remember to do so in the future. The dollhouse is in storage right now in the basement on a fold out table and I unfortunately can’t access it easily. All the furniture is stored in a dresser drawer. I had it set up in my daughter’s room, but when she moved back home a few years ago due to health issues I put it in storage. Maybe by summer I can find another place to set it up again and share pictures. . Sorry I got everyone excited about something I can’t show right now, but I promise I won’t forget.
Linda, I didn’t realize you re-bought Renwal furniture. I assumed it was from your childhood. My mom’s is, but she only had two Renwal people, a red lady and a tiny baby in a diaper. The others were frozen Charlottes.
Your cat house sounds amazing, Joy. I’m sure Flicker loved his special place.

  17. Charlotte Trayer

In response to Linda’s question (and then I really Must get to bed!), my favorite childhood doll when I was little was my rubber drink-and-wet doll. Not Tiny Tears, and I don’t think Betsy Wetsy, either, but that type. She was rubber, and had molded hair and decal eyes. I had bottles, diapers, plastic pants, clothes, etc. for her and even a little table-top bathinette! She got bathed and creamed and powdered numerous times, and by the time I was a teenager, her fingers were starting to show signs of future disintegration, some of her painted hair was wearing off, etc. When I was 14, almost 15, we moved from Mich. to Seattle, and mom said I Had to give away (“get rid of” maybe) at least one doll, so I reluctantly gave her and all her paraphernalia to a neighbor girl. And then I came home and cried!

However, I kept all my other childhood dolls, and my favorite of those was my 14″ Ideal Princess Mary walking doll, for which my mother made an extensive wardrobe. I still have her and all her clothes and accessories (including some things I bought at the dime store). I even have the pattern mom used, although I think a piece or two is missing. Mom also made a large wardrobe for my “big doll”–a Magic Skin body (which has disintegrated badly but I still have it) and vinyl head. I can look at those doll clothes and remember some of them were made from scraps of things mom made for me!

    Happy memories!

Dear Friends, I am proposing another question:

Is anyone doing anything special to celebrate World Doll Day?

It is celebrated on the second Saturday in June, so June 13, 2020.

Here is a little bit about the day that I got from a website:

” The First World Doll Day was established on June 14th, 1986 with a letter by Mildred Seeley. It was created to spread the universal message of happiness and love.

“The day is not owned by any company, club or person and no fees, permission or obligations are required.

“Many have celebrated the day by giving a doll to someone–a child or adult, but freedom of expression and celebration are left up to the individual.”

We are holding our Doll Club luncheon (UFDC) on that day. I will be celebrating in that way but I am trying to think of something I can do as an individual. What are your thoughts?

  19. Dorothy, never heard of World Doll Day, but you can be sure it is Doll Day here every day!! I’ll have to think about it.
