My Valentine present and a “little bit of prettiness…”

I thought I’d show you what I got for Valentine’s Day from my hubby… it’s not your typical romantic gift, and there was probably a time when I might have said, “You got me WHAT?” … but not this time! He knows me too well… I wanted Beadboard…and that’s what he got me.

No chocolates, no flowers, not even a card this year… but beadboard…*be still my heart!* You might be thinking, what’s it for? It’s for a later post and it won’t be too long before I can show you!

We got it at Home Depot and they even cut it in half for us… the sheets are normally 8 ft x 4 ft, but for what I’m using them for, I needed them cut in half… They have a huge machine at Home Depot that cut them all precisely in half…

My hubby said, “Hey, that’s a tool I don’t have!” They guy told him you can find them online… and have your very own… for a mere *gulp* $700! That’s one he’s going to have to wait on for a while! :o)

Okay, now in “kitchen news”… here are a few pictures of what happened today…

The floor was patched in 3 major places… gotta make it as smooth as possible to lay down that loose lay flooring!

The “Caulk King” did his thing all around the top of the kitchen, filling in all the little cracks and crevices that caught your eye…

The “Spackle Queen” (that would be me!) went around the top of the soffits and filled in all the little nail holes and then sanded them… Then I washed down all the walls!

I even did a tiny bit of painting under the right side of the soffits because we are getting the brick board put up tomorrow! (hopefully!)

That was really the only “pretty” part we did today… but it’s coming right along… I’ll get back to sewing real soon! Hang with me, please!

See you Monday,
Have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. I understand fully, Jeanne, about the excitement of getting Bead Board! I have it too in my kitchen and dining area. Who needs candy and flowers when you can have something that will last and you can admire for a very long time? George knows the way to your heart, for sure!
My kitchen has bead board under the cabinets, where I think you will have that brick. It makes it look so clean and crisp, and makes the things on my counter easy to see. We also have bead board almost halfway up the wall in the dining part, with white chair railing. It’s the very “in” thing to do.
You two are doing an amazing job of turning the church kitchen into something so professional looking! This labor of love certainly is going to be a BIG improvement, and you both are to be commended for putting the church kitchen before yours, even though you have been waiting for yours to be done for a long time. Good things happen to those who wait!!!
    Happy weekend, Jeanne!

    1. Hi Linda, oh yay! I’m not alone in my love of beadboard! The more the better!!!
Wait till you see the next pictures of the kitchen!!! We did a little more “pretty!”
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. What a wonderfully complete answer to my question to Charlotte about sewing lingerie yesterday. I know we’d all like to see the results. I’ve ordered the pattern already and look forward to the tips about sewing tricot. Thanks, Charlotte, for offering to help. You have such caring readers, Jeanne.

True professionals working on the kitchen. Do they have any idea how lucky they are at your church! Please frame some of these pictures for them to see the Before so they might begin to truly appreciate the After. Can’t wait to see your kitchen in similar pictures. Blessings to you for all you do for all of us.

P.S. I’m two weeks into a viral bronchitis which supposedly last 3-6 weeks. Think I’ll live now!

    1. Reading Susette’s comments about Charlotte’s helpful answers caused me to go back to re-read Charlotte’s post from yesterday. Then I looked up Ann Person on Amazon — there are a lot of her stretch and sew books available at very low prices for all of us looking for one more thing to learn. Thanks to both of you for the leads.

    2. Hi Susette,
I haven’t looked at Charlotte’s comments yet, but I’m going to have to, since so many people are talking about them.
True Professionals my foot…how about True Idiots! We have so much to learn! But I love to kearn.
Please take care of yourself, Susette. …
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. The kitchen isn’t pretty yet, but it’s improving fast. You two are doing a wonderful job, and no one is surprised. Susette is right about the before pictures so that people appreciate the after results.

Beadboard! What a wonderful gift. I’m looking forward to seeing how you use it. And a beadboard cutter! What a wonderful gift idea for George. Right after you get him a beadboard cutter shed to store it in.

Now to check Charlotte’s comments from yesterday. It’s sounds like Susette has a new hobby, something she can do while she finishes her recovery. Next time Linda sends pictures, maybe they should feature her beadboard, and I’ll bet other people have used it too. I’m hoping for more pictures and inspiration.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
If you saw the kitchen at the end of today, you “might” think it was somewhat pretty!!! :o)

I love your comment about a “cutter shed” and will have to share that with George… he’ll like that!
I’ll ask Linda to send some pictures of her beadboard …just for inspiration!! :o)

      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. That’s a lot of beadboard. Lovely gift and not cheap either. Where will it go? Above the counters? Around the dining room? Can’t wait to see. Oh how I would love a load of beadboard. Are those large sheets 5 X 8? I want to put it down both sides of the hall with chair rail above. Will become the art gallery above. I can dream can’t I?
As to Charlotte’s underwear, I wonder if some thrift store night gowns could be reused? I’ve seen some in new condition. I wish that old nylon fabric was still available. Loved it. I’ve never thought of making bikini underwear. I’ve made men’s boxers, so why not give it a try. At least I can check out the pattern and book and think about it.
Hope the paint fumes don’t get to you. Know it will look so clean and nice when your work is complete.
    Happy long weekend.

    1. Hi Joy,
Oh boy, another beadboard lover! My lips are sealed about how I’m using it but hopefully I can reveal it soon! The sheets come 4 x 8 ft, but mine were cut in half…4 x 4 ft squares.

I had to exchange the paint today…it wasn’t mixed right and was too yellow. It was way off from my color chip…Lowe’s got it right the second time!
I’ve got to check out Charlotte’s comments!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I love bead board! What a wonderful valentine. I love that cutting machine that they have at Home Depot. We don’t cut enough things to make it worth getting one but I love that they have one there.
The kitchen is looking so much better already. It is almost to the “make me pretty again” stage of renovation. That is the best part to me. I understand the importance of doing all the electrical and structural work but I like doing the pretty stuff best.
Hope you have a good day.
    Take care –

    1. Hi Charlotte,
I have to admit, I like the, pretty part best too, but unfortunately, you have to do the grunt work first….but today we did some “pretty!”
Maybe Monday or Tuesday I can show it!!!
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Love the beadboard Jeanne !!! Any gift to add to the beauty of a home is number one in my book!!!
The kitchen looks like it’s coming along nicely. George is certainly moving right along. Can’t wait to see it all done…and more than anything, can’t wait to see what happens with the beadboard!

    1. Hi Paula,
We worked from 8:30 this morning till 3:30 this afternoon…then we raced home and took showers just in time to make it back to a Chinese New Year celebration! We only had apples and water all day, so the food they made tasted so yummy!
I can’t wait to show you my beadboard project!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Oh yes, beadboard is an awesome Valentine! We had it in our kitchen on the farm and I just loved it. My friend has it on her ceiling and that is a knockout too! This house is MCM so we have the chair rail but had to put a dimensional wallpaper on bottom half and painted it.
Stretch and Sew was such a great company and taught such good classes. That double knit they had for slacks was the best. If I had a dollar for every shirt and pants we made we could take a trip. I still have those patterns….I think…must go look ?

    1. Oh Kathie,
We should do a post sometime where everyone shows their beadboard and how they used it.
I think I have 2 or 3 Stretch and Sew patterns. I need to check mine out agan too.
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Molly’s dress was just lovely yesterday. The little bonnet is just adorable.
I totally understand the love of beadboard as well. My great grandparents had it in their farmhouse. I have very vague memories of it. We chose to put it in the sunroom when that edition went on and I absolutely love it. My guess is it’s for your own kitchen redo.
I think any gift or purchase that lasts is better than one that doesn’t.
The kitchen is coming along nicely. Enjoying seeing the progress.

Hope you feel better soon, Susette. My daughter used to get upper respiratory infection very often as a child.

    1. Hi Laura,
Beadboard must have been around for as long as we can remember. It seems like everyone has some kind of memory of it.
A dozen roses cost as much as a sheet of beadboard! I know what I’ll pick every time! :o)
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. I also prefer the gifts that last and like to surprise my husband every once in a while. Because he flew for a living and was often out of town, one year I surprised him at work with a cactus/succulent potted plant combination as a Valentine’s Day gift deluvery with a card. I figured why should women always get the treats. I also like flowers you can plant or have in your home (but hubby is the one with the green thumb who keeps them flourishing).
