Ruby Red Fashion Friend, Violette, tries on necklaces and headbands for her 20’s dress set…

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the comments on Violette’s dress… I was bracing myself in case it wasn’t well received… but thankfully, it seems to be okay to proceed. I spent some time looking on the internet at 1920’s necklaces and hair accessories and stockings. Most of the headbands with feathers were for the flapper dresses, which Violette’s dress might be considered one. (?) Then I studied all those long necklaces tied in a knot down low, and often times twirled around! :o)

I figured out how I was going to style Violette’s hair and it looked wonderful when I was finished with it, but after trying on necklaces and headbands, it’s a bit messy again and I’ll have to redo it. No problem.

I also discovered if you want the dress a little shorter, you can just slide it up her waist a bit, along with the underskirt, and when you put the top on, the snaps will hold it in place.

Here is the inside of the top… it’s all finished off, and neat, but not exactly my finest work. I was flying by the seat of my pants on this one… making it up as I went along. The back has snaps and tiny little buttons to secure it.

I also made a pair of cream dotted thigh highs…

I had to go to town today so I stopped at Hobby Lobby and looked for something to use as Violette’s necklace. I didn’t really want to string a set of beads, so I was looking for something already strung, something that was flexible and had a little bit of weight so it would drape nicely and something that would easily tie in a knot. The beads had to be pretty small to tie in a knot. I found a double strand of black beads, a strand of silver beads and a double strand of tiny gold beads. I decided to buy them all and bring them home to try them out and see how their “knot-ability” was and how they fit around her neck and looked next to her dress…

Here are the black beads…Sorry, but they were actually not flexible enough to tie into a small knot, so I will be taking them back.

Here is the silver strand of beads…they tied into a nice knot, but to me, they kind of blended in too much and got lost

Then there was the double strand of tiny gold beads. They tied into a wonderful knot, had lots of drapeability. I must have liked them the most, because I took the most pictures of them. To me, they were the best choice.

It’s SO cute to see something “replicated” and looking almost like the real thing from the 1920’s. I love the little knot in it.

Now let’s talk headbands… I have a few different ones to show you… and I’m sure everyone will have a different opinion, but we’ll see.
Before I decorate it, I NEED to know which one I’m going to use… so for now, this is just the band… but there will be ribbons and beads and embellishments added next.

The first one is a white one with kind of a tassel look to it…

The second one is a piece of vintage lace that is made of metallic threads in kind of goldish/silverish tone combined.

Here is another closer shot of it…

This is another piece of vintage lace I had that matches the pinkish/rose flowers in the fabric…it’s similar to a Cluny lace.

The last one is a piece of stretch fold over elastic, but could be used for the base of a headband. It’s kind of gold and silver combined too. It’s sort of like a glittery stretch elastic, and the color is pretty, but the band, to me, is just sort of blah… not enough interest to it… it’s just a flat stretchy band.

Here it is with the gold beads…

…and here it is with the silver strand of beads.

I found 2 hanks of rose colored ribbons…I will have to accent with this color as there is NOTHING in the whole town any other color unless I use a cream ribbon. This one is the satin ribbon…

…and the other is silk ribbon…

I’ll be using one of these ribbons as the base for my embellishing.

I would still like to make a little clutch purse for her, but I haven’t looked at purses from the 20’s so I need to check them out.

I will see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Perfect! The third bit of lace with the pink flowers 🌸 looks like it was made for this dress, maybe with a few feathers or just one accent feather. The gold beads that knotted are also perfect in length and color. Lovely!

Jeanne, the dress is getting better by the minute! I much prefer the gold beads to any others. and they are just the thing to make it look s like a 20’s dress!

Now for the headband, the first one looks like it goes on a lampshade and is too white for me! The second one just fades into her hair, and seem too wide, but the third, BINGO!! That is just perfect, and i wish she would have had her gold beads on for the picture too. The next one I just didn’t care for at all, too wide and plain or something.

I do not understand why the clump of ribbons on the top of her head is there. You say you are using them for what? The color is nice, but I don’t know what you were going for there.

So that third lace band is just perfect, at least to me along with the gold beads! Oh, yes, the cream thigh highs are just the thing too!

What a lot of effort and research you are putting into this outfit!

Although I love the silver beads with the print, the gold beads are a better choice for their nice drape and the realistic knot. For the headbands, I do like that third one. I like the second one, too, but it seems a bit heavy for this particular outfit.

Of the ribbons, I prefer the satin one–it’s a better pink. I like the drape of the other one, but the color isn’t quite right.

Everything is really coming together now!!

The knotted gold beads are perfect. Exactly how I pictured a necklace.
And, Pick Number Three, Pick Number Three, Please. Love that one with the pink accent as it goes perfectly with the dress. Not sure what that pink glob of ribbons may be used for, but seem totally unnecessary. If anything, I like Susette’s idea of a feather. Maybe when you return the other necklaces you might search for a small soft pinkish or the bluish/teal feather or two? Oh, I wonder how a small peacock feather would look? Really liking the dress now.
Looks like we’re going to be heating up this week. Not sure I’m ready for that yet.

So far it looks like we are all mostly on the same page. I love the third lace with the pink for the headband and the double-stranded gold necklace is totally perfect. I prefer the satin ribbon if you go with a ribbon. Looking forward to seeing what the headband looks like when finished. A great movie with great costuming for that era was “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore. Fun movie and the costuming was great.

I love that movie, Barbara! And yes, costuming was great. When mom and I went to see it, though, we had no idea it was about the white slave trade in the 1920s! Really surprised us. Still, fun movie, good songs, great costumes–and Carol Channing!! “Razzzzzzberries!!”

Violette’s dress looks very pretty, especially the little embroidery touches.. The cream thigh highs are perfect with it as are the gold beads. I like the headband that has the pink in it. It’s the ideal match.
