My mistake, I guess… when I was getting ready to go to bed last night, I looked at Molly’s dress and knew I was most likely going to have to find a ribbon for a bow in the front. So I looked for a gold or blue ribbon and when I tied the gold one in a quick bow and stepped back from it, I thought it was the right color but just needed to be tied smaller. I stuck that pin in it just to hold it in place to judge the color.
Well, apparently, not too many of you thought the bow was great… I’m not entirely sure if it was the color you objected to, or the size of the ribbon. I just haphazardly tied that bow and stuck that pin in it… I guess I shouldn’t have left it that way…
I think you’ll like my solution today…
But first, let’s see what else I did…
How about a slip to hold out that pretty dress from the 40’s… I know… they weren’t generally that full in those years, but I’ve said it before, I really don’t like a skimpy skirt, so I do make mine a little more full skirted than they were in the 40’s.
Just a pretty white tulle slip decorated to match the dress fabric…
The dress is now hemmed so you can see how well the slip works…
Here is a close up of that fabric…it’s very pretty!
I was sort of dreading hemming the pinafore…the fabric is SO fine and I didn’t want my stitches to come through the front and show…
I found the tiniest needle in my stash and used it, very carefully fulling the thread through the fabric almost in slow motion. I didn’t want to get any knots in my thread or pull any runs in the fabric. I didn’t.
I had to take the waistband off today as I had made the pinafore too long in the back and it overlapped… If it had buttoned, it would have been fine, but it tied in a bow, so I had so scoot my gathers over all the way around, so I just took it off and restitched it back on. It’s much better now and meets perfectly in the back.
Here is how it looks a bit further away…
This blue was the perfect color for the fabric…
Okay, now about that gold bow… you all objected to this look…
Well, in all honesty, that really wasn’t a look at all… just a ribbon color I thought would work…
I shortened it and tied it like I had in mind…
But, since so many ladies didn’t care for it… I searched for something else…
I found 2 pieces of silk ribbon and tied tiny bows and added them to a piece of elastic cord…
I haven’t done it yet, but I’m going to add a tiny flat button under the collar on each shoulder seam and make a loop at the ends of the elastic… the winner can choose which ever color ribbon they like or have NO ribbon at all if they like that… You will be able to just loop the end of the elastic cord over the flat button and straighten up your ribbon how you like it; under the collar or on top.
Gold?
Or blue?
Well that was my day… I hope everyone likes that better…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
This outfit is really coming together now, and very nicely, I might add. All the details–first the petticoat, and now a choice of bows! I really did like the first gold bow–at least that shade of gold–but it wasn’t done with the usual precision you usually do those things. I’m not sure which of these two new bows is my favorite; they both look nice.
My twinsie challenge top is done except for the hems! Pictures soon.
What a relief, Jeanne! I sure didn’t care for that huge bright yellow bow in the first place, and now that I see it wasn’t what you intended at all, well, I can say I should have know you better!! Now that said, I still don’t like the first smaller bright yellow bow, it just takes away from the delicate buttons, and just everythng else. I MUCH prefer the smaller, not so bright bows, that can be changed!! What a neat idea! To tell you the truth, I can’t decide which one I prefer, just that the toned down yellow one, that is partly sheer, looks so much better than the bright buttercup yellow that shows up on my monitor! The blue is just perfect, and shows off the buttons better I think, but what a good idea to include both!
The slip does hold out the dress, making it look shorter, and I do like that the dress material shows at the bottom. What a sweet outfit!
Maybe now a headband the same material as the dress, with detachable bows to match what she has on the dress?? Or just a headband??
Jeanne, the bows are a much better idea that the first one, but, if I had this sweet outfit I would leave it off. The fabric is adorable and, to me , doesn’t need the bow, the cute buttons are enough and it takes away from them. However, it is a great idea to include them so that the new owner can decide. I think this is one of your best outfits, the colors, the pinafore, the fabric…I love it.
I think all your creations are amazing. You have such attention to detail. My first choice would be the smaller blue bow around the neckline. It follows through with the blue pinafore and the blue buttons. I don’t think there are any wrong choices. The outfit will be wonderful however it is finished.
As to the bow, I don’t think the yellow color is an exact match to either of the goldish colors in the fabric. One is lighter yellow and the other more gold/brown. Even together, they are not the same as the bow. I like the blue, but would also like to see a darker green or brown or a even a dark gold from the fabric and maybe even a white bow. Giving an option in bow color is a great idea. However, placing the bow lower would prevent Molly looking like she is choking. As a child, I know I would not have been comfortable wearing a high collar and a bow hitting my chin. Now, the dress and pinafore are absolutely adorable. This will be a great seller. Taking the time and effort to do that delicate hemming on the pinafore was an amazing feat. Both pieces are beautiful.
Well, I’m still on our old system for internet, but we have high speed now after a very long day for install. Later, I’ll have to take time and figure out how to change over this computer and my cell phone. Difficult for someone who didn’t grow up with computers. We have a temporary new phone number until it is switched back to our regular one. Hopefully, very soon. But, now I have to dial 1 and area code before calling with it. Progress is not always fun.
This is such a beautiful set. It just makes me smile to look at it! Pinafores add such a lovely look. The lace edge just sets it off. Actually I like the dress without either bow but looking forward to the head band 😉
Have Doll Club today. Such a nice group of doll lovers. If there is a UFDC Club in your area it is a fun way to meet with those who love their dolls like you do.
Dear Kathie, I agree! I belong to several UFDC clubs some are on Zoom. One cannot have too much dolly fun!
Dear Jeanne, I love the material for the dress. My bow choice is the blue one. I think it is nice that you are sending both bows along with the outfit.
My neighbor and I were in a doll club for years. We were the “younger one” and as the others grew too old to want to give programs, we tried to fill in enough, but finally the club was canceled. There are no others near enough.
Dear Sissy, alas, we are finding that many clubs have few members and are thinking about canceling. UFDC has recognized that and now sanctions Zoom clubs.
There is a Zoom club for Barbie collections. There is a Zoom club for BJD collectors (Ball Jointed Dolls). There is a Zoom club for Mary Hoyer doll collectors. And then there are Zoom clubs for general doll collectors.
Send me an email if you would like more information. I am sure we can find you a club.
Thank you, Dorothy, that is so kind of you. However, my hearing is so difficult when trying to understand people’s speech it would just be frustrating to use zoom.
The outfit is very darling! First of all , anyone who is familiar with your sewing , should not have been critical of a pin sticking in a bow as a temporary check! You are a perfectionist and would have never left it that way! My opinion on the bow is that it distracts from the outfit. I would leave it off or maybe put a streaming gold and blue one tied together at the waist.
The whole thing is just so pretty! I think I like the blue bow best, but the gold is lovely also.
