My time is going to be limited this next coming week… and maybe some time after that. My hubby is going to have some surgery this coming week and since I’m playing NURSE, I’ll have to put my patient ahead of my sewing for a bit! This isn’t a little surgery, but pretty major, very necessary and much needed. Two doctors are going to work together and try to come up with the best outcome for him… They can’t tell us exactly what they are going to be doing until they get in there, so it’s a waiting game all the way until they are finished and tell us. I’ll get the news first!
I’d appreciate any prayers for us this week…
I am planning to keep my posts going, but not regular sewing posts. I will probably find some archived posts and ask some questions posts… that way everyone can still visit with each other… I’ll be MIA, most likely, but I might sneak in every so often if I can.
This is SO IRONIC! I just happened to think of this recipe today while I was working at the Food Pantry. I went to find the post with the Recipe for Refrigerator Pickles, and GUESS WHEN I FIRST POSTED IT? JULY 15, 2015!!! How did that happen? 8 years ago TODAY I first introduced this recipe to everyone, and I’m still cheering it on!
Linda, one of my very faithful readers, saw all the cucumbers we were getting from our garden and she sent me a recipe for Amish Refrigerator Pickles. She said they were delicious and I have been wanting to give them a try. I decided today was the day to make them. I have to admit they were super easy to make and I can’t tell you how they taste for 24 hours, as they have to set, but there’s nothing in them that I don’t like so I’m sure I will. What I liked the most about them is how quick they came together. There was no slaving away in the kitchen for hours…there’s nothing to cook…just a few ingredients, 2 quart jars and you’re all set! Here is her recipe if you’d like to give them a try.
Amish Refrigerator Pickles
6 cups of cucumbers, sliced
1 cup green peppers, sliced
1 cup of onions, sliced
Mix them all together…
Liquid:
1 cup cider vinegar
2 cups of white sugar (actually, I think you don’t need all that, maybe 1 3/4 cup)
1 teaspoon celery seed
2 tablespoons salt
Use two quart sized jars, (but I just use what I have)
put cucumbers, peppers and onions in each jar
mix other ingredients in a large measuring cup, stir well–(sugar does not dissolve)
Pour over cucumber, pepper and onions
finish with water to top of jar–then shake
put in refrigerator for 24 hours before serving
Thanks Linda! Guess what we’re having as a “side” tomorrow for dinner?
Here’s the recipe all in one grouping if you want to print it off for yourself…
6 cups of cucumbers, sliced
1 cup green peppers, sliced
1 cup of onions, sliced
Thanks again Linda!
See everyone Monday!
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, Jeanne, most definitely you and George will be in my prayers. I’m so sorry you are/he is facing a big surgery; that can be scary, for sure! Been there with Ron a time or three. (The scariest was the diverticulitis/colostomy one, but we made it thru, thank the Lord!)
That pickle recipe looks easy–and sounds tasty! You’ll have to let us know how it turns out.
I see you have three bids on Kirsten’s outfit already–hooray!! I can’t say I’m surprised–it’s really a beautiful outfit.
Dorothy in PA asked about my color TV story, so here it is (with a bit of background first):
We didn’t get our first TV until I was 11, and of course it was B/W, small small screen, big big piece of furniture! Always B/W TVs for years thereafter. Even when I had my own apartment, Joyce and I just had a B/W TV.
I got married in 1974, and Ron had a color TV!! Nice! So we were watching “The Wizard of Oz” one night, and suddenly Dorothy steps out of her house into Oz….”Look at that!!!” I cried. “It’s in Color!”
“Yeah, I know.”
“But you don’t understand, it was in black and white and now all of a sudden it’s in COLOR!!”
“That’s right.”
“No, wait, you don’t understand, it was in black. and. white. and now it’s in C*O*L*O*R!!!
“Yup.”
“Do you mean, this part has always been in color?”
“Yes. It always has.”
I had never seen “The Wizard of Oz” in the theater, only on a black and white TV, before this, and I truly had NO idea that part of it was in color!! 😂
That’s a good story about the color TV! Thank you for sharing it with us. I can only imagine how excited you were to see that black and white turn into maganifucent color! Loved those red ruby slippers. Which by the way, I actually got to see one of the pairs in the Revlon Museum in Hollywood!
This reminds me of an ad that’s on my streaming TV for one of the tech providers. Can’t remember which one. A girl of about 13 is talking about how her brothers have it so good because they can access all their screens at one time now. Back in her day… One of the brothers replies how old are you? 80! I laughed because back in my day…
I was surprised the first time I saw “The Wizard of Oz” on color TV because I had never seen it in a theater only on B/W TV. It was spectacular when it turned from B/W to color. I think I was in second grade when we got our first TV. We had one when I was in first grade for a few days. My parents decided they couldn’t afford it. They told us it fell off the table and broke. It was about a year until we got another one and then it was a nice “home entertainment center” with TV, radio and phonograph. Maybe because we didn’t have it when I was small I never much watched TV while I was growing up and spent my time doing other things like reading and sewing. But my sisters watched a lot. My mother used to turn it off so they would go outside and play. When my grandparents had their 50th wedding anniversary around 1967 my aunts and uncles bought them a color TV because they stayed home more. They loved it.
Dear Charlotte, thanks for sharing your story. That is funny. I had forgotten about Oz being in color.
Hi Charlotte,
I don’t remember the first time I ever watched The Wizard of Oz in color, but I’m sure I had the same reaction you did. Great story!
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, you can count on me for prayers for George. For all the things he does, it is hard to think he is human and can get sick like the rest of us! Keep us informed, please!
Yes, I too am thinking “Pickles” when I see all the cucumbers out everywhere! It’s the perfect time for them, and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! We have a farmers market type of thing at our local grocery store, where local produce gets a spotlight, and cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, squash, etc. are right there in one section for us to buy. Nothing from other far away places like the regular produce. I’m going to pick out some nice big, fat cucumbers!
Speaking of farmers markets, guess what the 40’s girls are doing? Yes, selling veggies! I’ll send a picture!
Speaking of color TV’s, we first bought one in the early 70’s. While I grew up with a black and white TV, yes, seeing “The Wizard of Oz” in color was a wonderful experience. However, my grandmother always took us girls to the show downtown to see that movie every year, so I knew that the color part happened when she stepped out of her house on Oz. But, oh my, how much trouble adjusting the color was! Too much red, too much blue, too much green, all the ways to mess it up! I don’t think many younger people now realize what a struggle it was to get the colors just right!
Not to mention constantly having to adjust the horizontal and vertical hold of the old sets. But I will say that cable and streaming has its issues too. When we had cable we would lose the connection in the middle of shows sometimes, especially if there was a storm somewhere and it didn’t have to be local. With streaming things are better but we watch freevee which is videos and sometimes the dreaded buffering shows up and you have to sometimes go back to the beginning and fast forward through to where you were. There are other ways to get it back but you have no idea which will work until you try them.
Hi Linda,
I had to run to town for a few things today and I SURE wanted to pick up some peppers and make some pickles myself, but knew it wasn’t on my to-do list. But I sure wanted them to be…
Thanks for your prayers Linda,
Blessings, Jeanne
I will be sending prayers, too, for you and George. I’m sure many of us think of you as extended family and care so much. Thank you for letting us know.
The Kirsten ensemble is amazing, the colors, design and details, especially the final touch with the glass beads at the collar. You always find the perfect accessories in your stash of baskets, produce, toys, bears and embroidery skills. I sometimes wonder how you can top the latest outfit but you always do somehow. This one has everything!
Thank you Susette!
Thank you too, for all your sweet compliments on Kirsten’s newest set. I appreciate them. She looks so pretty standing in this outfit…
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, you and George will certainly be in my prayers. The Lord will be with you in all ways. And bless you for being the best nurse George could ever have!
The pickle recipe has been made by my husband ever since Linda put the recipe in your blog. He absolutely loves it and makes it often. Thank you Linda!
Wow, Paula, it’s so nice to hear that your husband makes that pickle recipe and loves it! Now if only MY husband would make it! That would make my day!
Thank you Paula,
I remember you saying your hubby made the pickles before. Aren’t they great?
Blessings, Jeanne
Seeing those jars of pickles reminds me so much of my grandmother’s pantry with the gleam from a small paned window backlighting the gorgeous colors of apricots, peaches, and the special watermelon pickles she used to make all sitting in Mason jars on shelves awaiting the grand opening during the cooler months. 🙂
Jeanne, you are so much more than playing nurse. A companion, health expert, and cheerleader all wrapped into one. My thoughts will be with George, this week. I know the doctors will solve the problem and together come up with a good solution for him. Please keep us informed on his progress.
Exciting news. My RRFF Jada, is here in town and expected to be delivered with the mail this morning. Not much chance of a sneak attack, as other person always retrieves the mail.
And another hot one here. Hope all in heat or wetness stay safe.
Dear Joy, oh dear. Hmmm. I think you may have to call in some other operatives to create a distraction. Let us know what happens if you can.
Well, Jada, is here and arrived undiscovered by other person. I heard the mail truck and headed for the door thinking if I got there first, maybe I could use the kick the box somewhere trick. But, found that other person was in the office. So, went in to talk about the list I had accumulated so other person would take off for Safeway giving the mail person time to arrive and deposit my package. However, the list was unnecessary. The mail truck was in front of the house. Talked louder and then I heard a thump and knew that was the box. Other person didn’t hear it. Decided to chance it as other person seemed occupied, and opened the door, grabbed the box, brought it inside, and threw it under the dining room table. Hopped back to the door and pulled out the mail from the box. Took other person the mail. Then, he headed out the door for the grocery store. I however, grabbed scissors and opened the box. Finally, free time when I needed it. 🙂 Had Jada dressed and ready to play before other person returned from the store. That was fun. She is a cutie. 🙂
Thank you, Joy, for filling us in on your day today! It’s so great that Jada made it to your dolly room without being detected! She is a very pretty doll… I keep seeing the sweetest pictures of her and my heart strings are being pulled a little bit!
Thanks Joy,
Blessings, Jeanne
Dear Joy, yeaaa! I got my fix for the week. Thanks for sharing your incredible caper stories!
Oh dear…so sorry to hear George needs more surgery. You will be the perfect nurse but just remember to take good care of you too! He will be first up on the prayer list.🙏🏻
Thank you Linda for sharing those awesome pickles. I have made them several times too. Didn’t plant cukes this year but hopefully my son did.
We will watch for updates and jabber among ourselves🥹 Take care
Hi Kathie,
I’m trying my best to take good care of myself, so I CAN take good care of my hubby. I found myself coming down the attic stairs and taking them one step at a time with both feet on the step before moving to the next… just being careful…
Thank you for your prayers…
Blessings, Jeanne
This is great. Being careful is your only choice right now. Fortunately you both have a great deal of experience and common sense.
Know you and George are definitely in my prayers for a good outcome from George’s surgery. We on the sofa will be okay so you do what you need to do and say hey (that’s Texas talk) when you get the chance. We usually do manage to entertain ourselves when you must be elsewhere.
Linda’s Betsy has once again put a bug in the ear of my Betsy for a new outfit. This time it was actually three new outfits. When I searched eBay for the cute little sailor dress Betsy had on in the last picture I discovered there was a seller who had several of the “Welcome Back Betsy” outfits. I bought Betsy the first day of school outfit with a plaid skirt and jacket first because it was the only one I saw.
There were several who were selling the sailor outfit. I had bought some things for another doll so I decided I’d reached my budget limit. When my purchase for the other doll got cancelled because there was a mistake and what I wanted had already sold, I went back to buy the sailor dress and ran across the gardening outfit. All these are in the original packages never opened. Can’t wait to see what Linda’s Betsy will be wearing in future pictures. I’m saving up.
Thanks for the pickle recipe. I have this from last time but I need to give a copy to Sean and Dionne. They have a lot of cucumbers and she has been making pickles a lot. I’m sure they would like to try this recipe.
I need to ask for prayers also. For a friend of David’s who had routine knee replacement that turned out to be anything but routine. It seems that the doctor left the surgery in the hands of two residents and went off to do something else and there has been all kinds of complications. David and Gary were boyhood friends who have reconnected in the past couple years and have a very close relationship. Gary lives in Ohio so David can’t even drop by to give him moral support.
Hi Barbara and thank you for your prayers.
We will pray for your friend, Gary, too. Knee problems are NOT fun to deal with…
I hope you get to try the pickles… they really are good!!
Blessings, Jeanne
If I can walk out of a hospice (3 years ago now), you and George can get through this. You and the sofa sisters prayed for me, and I’ll pray for you two.
If you are going to be a nurse, surely you’ll have to get tattoos. All the nurses here have them. If I see an untattooed person acting like a nurse, I say, “How do I know you are a nurse? I don’t see any tattoos.” They roll up a sleeve or pull aside a collar, and there are their tattoos. Perhaps they are only required in Colorado.
I’ve made Linda’s pickles — they are really good and light enough to use as a side salad. Jeanne’s corn casserole is nice with them, with maybe something grilled.
Hi Marilyn,
I think of you and your miracle often… we almost lost you, and yet, you are still here! We will love your prayers!! :o)
I’ll have to keep my eyes out for nurses with tattoos…and let you know if I see any!
I have served those pickles along with my corn casserole too and BBQ chicken. Yummy!
Thank you Marilyn
Blessings, Jeanne
Definitely prayers for George, Jeanne. So sorry to hear he needs more surgery. May God watch over him and his surgeons. You’ll make an excellent nurse as always, maybe you need to whip up a nurse’s cap to look the part.
The pickle jars reminds me of two things, my grandmother also had a wonderful pantry filled with all sorts of homegrown canned veggies and she would buy fruits in season to can or freeze. The second thing is Andy Griffith’s “The Pickle Story”.
I do remember tuning the color on the tv we had when five in 1973. I saw a funny sign at the garden store the other day. “My kids asked what life was like in the 1980’s, so I took away their phones and turned the internet off.”
I love the pickle story from the Andy Griffith Show. I always thought of Aunt Bee as a wonderful cook but she evidently couldn’t make pickles. One of my other favorites was the one about the elixir Aunt Bee bought from the traveling medicine show. Hilarious.
Thank you Laura…
I can’t remember The Pickle Story on Andy Griffith… I’m going to have to look that one up… sounds funny.
Thanks so much, Blessings, Jeanne
Dear Jeanne, prayers have already begun. You take care of your husband and yourself. Don’t worry about the Sofa Sisters. We will be fine.
Thank you Dorothy,
I’ll take care of my hubby, the Lord will take care of us, and you all take care of each other!
Blessings, Jeanne
What kind of weather are you having there? My town has been so cool until this week that I’ve used the AC only twice. Being warm enough or cool enough after surgery matters. Fans make a big difference. So does being able to summon help. My mom had a bell to ring for me.
When my dad fell off a roof and broke several bones, of course he went to the hospital, but after he escaped, he described trying to wake my mother, who had lost her hearing and was exhausted from getting everything ready for him and then helping him get home and fed and comfortable. The story was very funny but being there was not quite so amusing. I’ll bet people here have ideas to make life easier, and you’ve had lots of nursing experience in recent years — that will help a lot. Rule #1 is to take care of yourself because everything else depends on your being well, strong, and in good spirits.
Hi Marilyn,,
It has been hot and humid here lately.
We keep our house on the cool side so we won’t have any problems with him being comfortable when we get back.
Our neighbors are taking care of the critters… big help and relief to us!
I am taking care of myself!!
Thank you Marilyn,
Blessings, Jeanne
The pickle recipe looks delicious, thanks for posting Linda’s recipe! I will definitely keep you, Jeanne, and your husband in my prayers, hope everything goes well.
Charlotte, I loved your story about “The Wizard of Oz’, we just saw a trivia question about the color of Dorothy’s shoes in the book. They were silver, but I think they changed them to red for the movie so they would be more colorful.
Marilyn. I didn’t know you have to get a tattoo to be a nurse, ha ha, but my cousin lives in Boulder and has several tattoos, maybe it’s a Colorado thing?
It sure is hot here in the Phoenix area!
Hi Terri and thank you too, for your prayers. I can already feel them from everyone.
I hope you’ll try the pickle recipe. It’s so easy and they are so good!!
It’s hot here too!
Thank you Terri,
Blessings, Jeanne
Dear Jeanne, I have been praying for you and George and will keep it up. I know what it is like to wait while your dear husband is “under the knife”. God bless and keep you both. Sending many prayers and hugs.
Sissy,
I just saw this… thank you very much!
Blessings, Jeanne
George is in my prayers. Hubby JUST planted a “container”(?)/elevated garden, and although HE’s not a big vegetable person he DID plant lots of different veggies. Although we’re both from the midwest, and OUR parents had gardens, we now live in the southwest, where growing conditions are a LOT different. I’m hoping to get lots of cucumbers, green beans, peppers, tomatoes etc., eventually. Right now, it’s hotter than blazes and probably not the best time to be starting a garden, so we’ll see.
Thanks so much for the prayers!
I hope you do get lots of veggies from your garden… nothing tastes as good as your very own home grown veggies! Keep us posted on how they do!
Blessings, Jeanne
